11 February 2016

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Families,

Welcome back to school for 2016, it has been a very smooth start with students settling into their new classes well. I am really looking forward to a fabulous year and the whole staff have been working hard already to make it a memorable year.

Last week we welcomed our 120 new Kindergarten students - a highlight for us was to see these enthusiastic new little faces joining our school community! The Kindy children have appreciated feeling welcome, safe and of course having great fun at Trentham Road.

We were lucky with the first week being mild weather to give the students a pleasant introduction to their new classes. This week the weather is not so kind. The hot weather is a part of our Australian Summer and we need to know how to manage our health and welfare during times of high temperature. The teachers will modify their programs to ensure students are drinking lots of water, wearing sunscreen and hats, resting in shade or cool areas and not exerting themselves too much during outdoor activities. All Phys Ed classes have been modified and when needed conducted under shelter. We are modifying the amount of time for lunch and recess and added play areas to include more shaded areas and opening classes for students during breaks when needed. If you have any specific concerns regarding your child please let their teacher or the office know.

A big welcome to all new families and new staff to our school and welcome back everyone. We will start the year off with 889 students.

2016 New (and Returning) Staff

Susan Taylor - Year 1
Belinda Russell -Year 6
Dwan Wilson - Kindy
Maria Davitkovska - Pre-Primary
Chloe Schipp - Kindy
Melanie Malatios - Pre-Primary
Emma Rogerson - Music
Keira Clarke - Year 5/6
Kristy Parkinson -Year 6
Tammy Devitt -Year 3
Ange Lightfoot - Kindy
Rachel Herbert - Year 3
Melanie Bursey – Education Assistant Kindy/PP

The year promises once again to be exciting with many interesting and varied activities. We have high standards at Landsdale and will as always be asking students to do their personal best.

As families you can support your child/children by encouraging them and working together on being resilient in all their endeavours at school. Work with staff to get the best possible outcomes for your children.

We view parents as partners in student’s educational journey and I encourage you if you haven’t already to become a member of the P&C. We also work closely with our School Board and you are welcome to attend the Annual Public School Board Meeting which will take place at 5.00pm on Wednesday 2nd March, 2016 in the school library.

Assembly

This year we are reflecting on our whole school practices and improving them to maximise learning opportunities for students.

One of the areas we have found impacts on the learning programs is the weekly assembly. The preparation for the assembly for each class often disrupts the flow of the programs in progress in the class for a fortnight. The logistics of assembling half the school each week into the undercover area is also problematic and disruptive to class programs. While we value the presentation to students of achievement awards and the opportunity to improve their public speaking and performance skills, we believe we can provide these in a more relevant format. We are changing the format to consider the needs of each year group and to reflect their particular learning programs. We understand how important the support of parents is to students and how much they value having their parents witness their achievements and performances, so parents will of course be welcome to come to the new meetings at relevant times.

The format for “Assemblies” this year will be to have Year Level Meetings that are a part of the learning process for that year level. For instance the year level may be studying a particular theme or have a focus that they would like to demonstrate. They can then build skills and expertise for the students around the work they are engaged in and celebrate their success at the meeting. The students will have a more meaningful involvement into the process and build on their organisational, presentation and public speaking skills more often as there will be more of the meetings than the current one assembly a year.

The format can be modified to suit each year level however the common elements to every year level meeting are:

  • At least 2 meetings a term.
  • One whole school Assembly/term (format to be decided).
  • I-Values the focus of achievement certificates.
  • Parents are invited to the meetings.
  • Student led.

We will put this in place for 2016 and review it at the end of the year.

Psychology Services Available to Students, Parents and Teachers in 2016

Many children and adolescents encounter developmental, social, emotional and behavioural problems. They don’t feel good about themselves and they struggle at school. For some students the playground is a frightening place. Others have difficulties with motivation and relationships. Many children fail to develop adequate social skills, emotional management skills and motivation skills. They struggle to make friends, manage their anxiety and fear, or deal with their anger.

Psychology services will be provided by onPsych and will compliment the current service that we get from our school psychologist. Our cluster will have access to a psychologist who will help students deal with a wide range of issues including, but not limited to:

Recognise and manage anxiety, fear and stress
Motivation and self-talk
Making and keeping friends
Controlling anger and frustration
Impulse control
Dealing with bullies
Learning techniques to help deal with ADHD

Early intervention services provided by onPsych in social, emotional and behavioural problems will make a positive difference to a child’s future. If your child qualifies under the Medicare guidelines they can access the services at no cost at school. The service is completely confidential.

There are three steps to access onPsych services:

Step One:

If you feel your child would benefit from working with a psychologist, in either individual or small group sessions, you will need to talk to Natalie Bracegirdle, Deputy Principal, she will help you document your concerns and goals for your child.

Step Two:

Take this documentation to your GP or Paediatrician and request a referral to an onPysch psychologist. When making your appointment you will need to notify reception that the appointment is for a referral to a Psychologist- Medicare item 2710.

Step Three:

Return the referral to Natalie Bracegirdle who will email or fax the referral to onPsych.

This year we have a new Psychologist supporting us, Jess Chrystal is ready to start working with students in our school.

Should you have any further questions please contact Natalie Bracegirdle (available Tues-Fri).

Welcome to the 2016 Parent Funded Apple 1-1 Program

Thank you to all the parents of Year Four students and new senior students who have joined the program this year. The beginning of the 1-1 Program for 2016 has been fabulous in terms of the support from parents. Many students have their laptops and are in the process of getting them prepared for the year. Teachers and students are spending the first couple of weeks establishing agreements that will give the grounding for high standards of self-regulation, at school and online. Explicitly teaching how to responsibly and appropriately use technology and communication tools provides students with the skills and knowledge to make informed and appropriate choices in the future. The technical aspects of the program are also being established in the first couple of weeks. This involves bringing the laptops up to a common operating system across the year levels, which meant many laptops needed to be upgraded to the 10.11 OS (El Capitan). The school has moved to the Department’s Standard Operating Environment 4.5 at the beginning of last year, which has meant a need to update wireless configurations and settings for the new server. This means that all students now have a single sign in at school and across the cluster, which will enable students to seamlessly use their laptops in any school in the cluster. All of the laptops are in the process of being reimaged, some have already been done, this may need to be redone as the image will be upgraded this week to El Capitan. Please make sure students back up their work every night on an external hard drive or thumb drive. As the machines are imaged a note is sent home with the students with information regarding setting up passwords and home wireless. The website also will have information and FAQ’s to assist you. The Cluster of schools share two technicians across the schools and at Landsdale we have a technician onsite every day except Wednesday. We are excited to begin the journey with your children to engage in rich 21st Century learning tasks and teach them how to become responsible digital citizens.

The Ashdale Cluster Parent Funded Apple 1-1 Laptop Program:

As part of an Ashdale Cluster initiative Landsdale Primary School implemented the Apple One to One program in 2011 and the program is now in the 6th year and runs from Years 4-6 in the Primary Schools and from Years 7-10 in the Secondary College.

This program involves families being given the opportunity to lease or purchase an Apple laptop for their child. In partnership with Winthrop Australia, we have negotiated an offer that we believe is very advantageous to parents in terms of price, warranty and onsite technical servicing if purchased through Winthrop. You are of course free to choose to purchase elsewhere and bring the laptop to school to have it imaged with the settings and software needed for the year.

In keeping with Landsdale’s vision of embedding technology, the One to One program enables students to learn the important skills that are essential to maximise their potential in a 21st Century classroom and workplace. They have, at point of need, access to information, applications and global experiences that enable deeper learning at home and at school.

The Apple laptops are particularly well suited to the education environment because they are loaded with software and applications that are great for getting students to extend their thinking and create innovative projects. They allow teachers to deliver engaging lessons with more students involved in each learning opportunity. The laptops have excellent options for security and parental control over what their child is accessing and when.

Why a 1:1 Programme?

Students are different these days, but a lot of educational material is not. At Landsdale Primary School this is changing rapidly. With the implementation of new engaging technologies and the explicit teaching of new skills including informational, visual and technological literacy; students need a place to explore these new boundaries that are changing by the day, not just to participate, but to shape the way education and communications work into the future.

Our teachers recognise that the assessment landscape is changing, but there is still a strong need for non-computer based skills such as handwriting, mental maths and physical activity. All these skills are essential to negotiate the 21st century opportunities.

At Landsdale, we are working to create a realistic environment for learning; an environment where students are able to create, collaborate, share and explore in a safe and fun way. The laptop provides immediate access to a global education, and the variety of engaging activities that a laptop does beyond mere production makes it the ideal learning tool for all students.

With the shift of Year 7 students to the Secondary College in 2015, combined with the College having begun their Parent Funded program the students have continuity of 21st century fluencies from Year 4 through to secondary years. Just think how skilled they will be by the completion of their education in our cluster!

The Parent Funded 1-1 Program enables our school funds to be directed toward improved infrastructure to support the increased opportunities for the students to access resources when, how and where they need them. Students are able to gain information more readily, explore possibilities, analyse data more effectively and develop creative and interesting ways of demonstrating their learning all at the point of need.

Our partnership with parents creates an environment that is technology rich and enables our students to gain the 21st Century skills needed to be successful now and in the future.

Check out the Website for all the updated information including a link to the 2016 package and pricing. We work with Winthrop Australia to provide the best value package for parents, if you compare all the specifications and inclusion of AppleCare, it is very good value. The ordering portal is available at anytime throughout the year, it usually takes approximately 2-3 weeks for delivery to the school.

How will the laptops be used?

In coming newsletters, we will highlight examples of how computers will be used to enhance the curriculum.

Today’s example focuses on the important area of writing. Currently, students might be asked to write a persuasive text using a pen and paper. This will continue but there are many ways in which the writing experience can be enhanced by using a laptop.

At the simplest level, the task could be enhanced by; typing the text into a word processor, adding images and perhaps using the built-in thesaurus to help the student choose more persuasive language.

A further enhancement would be to add hyperlinks, which would allow the reader to obtain further information or jump straight to the student’s references.

Taking the task one step further, the student could upload their writing to the school’s learning management system. There, other students in the class could provide constructive feedback and vote on the topic of the persuasive text.

Using the movie-making software that is built into the laptops, the students might even create a commercial trying to convince other students of their point of view. This could easily be made available to other classes and shown on the interactive whiteboards, providing an authentic audience for the students’ work.

Using the power of the Internet, this audience could even extended to the entire globe!

As you can see, the capacity to extend, motivate and challenge students is almost limitless!

The first Parent Workshop: “Introducing the MacAir” Tuesday 1st March at 5pm in LA 16 & 17.

Parent 1-1 Laptop Steering Committee:

Parents of students who are participating in the 1-1 laptop program are welcome to become a member of the steering committee. The parents on the steering committee enable the partnership between the school and parents in this program to be strong and collaborative. We listen carefully to the issues that parents raise through their representatives, surveys and general feedback and adapt the program accordingly. Any parents who wish to come along to our meetings are welcome, the first steering committee meeting for 2016 is on Tuesday 23rd February, in the school staffroom at 5pm.

For more information on the Landsdale 1-1 program contact Peter Hayward or Leanne White Ph: 93024100, Leanne.White@education.wa.edu.au

Parent Information Sessions

Over the next couple of weeks staff will be conducting parent information sessions. These sessions are an opportunity for parents to meet their child’s class teacher/s and find out about the learning journey their children will be taking this year. Staff will cover aspects of classroom organisation, behaviour management, curriculum programs and whole school activities. Every child should have at least one parent attend as vital information about your child’s learning program and your responsibilities as a parent will be discussed. This session is for parents only, children must not attend.

Parents are also reminded to keep an eye out in the school newsletter each fortnight for parenting articles and tips.

On The Ball … with Mr P

Welcome back to 2016 and this year is another busy one for the Physical Education Program. We have a number of events commencing already, including a specialist volleyball program for most the Year 5 and 6 classes being conducted by coaches from Volleyball WA.

This term, because of our large student population, two Physical Education specialists will run classes on two days. Mr Clive Cavallaro will be teaching Phys Ed on Tuesdays and Fridays and he and I will teach a similar program. I will also be taking Long Service Leave on Fridays in Term 1 and Mr Haydn Mansell will be teaching my classes on that day.

Please make sure your child wears appropriate footwear and a hat when attending Physical Education lessons. A water bottle at the moment is recommended also! If your child cannot participate in Phys Ed lessons due to injury or illness, a verbal or written message from you needs to be communicated to your child’s teacher or myself.

Students are able to wear their Faction shirts on Fridays, with the exception of Year 3 and 4 students who can wear their Faction shirt on Thursday, which is their nominated ‘Sport’ day from 2-3pm. Students can also wear their Faction t-shirt on special sporting events days in which they are competing, such as the Faction Athletics Carnival.

Faction Captain and Vice-Captain Voting

Faction Captain & Vice-Captain voting will take place this Friday, 12th February at approximately 2.15pm.There will be a boy and girl captain and a boy and girl vice-captain. We are re-introducing vice-captains this year, which will be taken up by Year 5 students, with Year 6 students holding the Captain roles.

Music Notes … with Miss Rogerson

Choir for Year 4-6 Students

Choir for students in Year 4-6 will begin in Week 3. Notes for all interested Choir students will go out to classes next week. Choir will be run on Tuesday mornings before school, starting at 8.30am for a 30 minute session.

City of Wanneroo – Museum in a Box

The City of Wanneroo is thrilled to launch our very own Museum in a Box program for 2016. This exciting outreach program has been designed for use by educational institutions throughout Perth but will first be offered to schools in the local Wanneroo area.

We have designed and curated four different boxes, each addressing a different person or subject connected to World War One and the Wanneroo area. Students will learn about Richard Smales who died on the Somme and Vincent Berriman who was fortunate enough to return home. We also cover the important role of the Red Cross on the home front and examine the interesting life of AANS Nurse, Sr. Anne Donnell. Each box contains real museum specimens and artefacts, images, DVDs, CDs, books and educational resources. They will be available to borrow in pairs so that students can obtain an understanding of the role of both men and women in the Great War.

The four boxes will be on display in the Great Court in the Wanneroo Library and Cultural Centre from 1 April to 1 July 2016 with bookings available in the new year for the boxes to be used by your students. Stay tuned for further details on this exciting program and how to be involved. ANZAC Museum in a Box is a collaborative project between the City of Wanneroo, The Department of Veterans Affairs and the Australian Government.

Please see the flyer for more information.
