25 February 2016
From the Principal
Dear Parents and Families,
Welcome to all the new parents who have registered to receive our electronic newsletter, you will find many useful articles, important dates and information about events happening in the school year. Please also like us on Facebook and subscribe to our Twitter account for quick regular updates on upcoming events. Our website also has more detailed information and important links to programs in the school, if you haven’t already, bookmark our site: www.landsdaleps.wa.edu.au and explore the resources. This year it is my aim to encourage all teachers to have a class website to keep you informed on the classroom programs and activities, these will be linked under the menu “Classes” on the website.
I would like to thank all the parents who are participating in the 1-1 Program, the response has been great. The students have been learning about the responsibilities that come with such a valuable learning tool. Please ensure you have read and signed the Participation Agreement and return them to the teachers to be ready for the next stage in their learning. They will begin to learn the appropriate and safe way to use the wonderful world of the Internet to open their learning opportunities to a global environment. Please take the time to visit the Digital Citizenship and Cybersafety sites recommended by teachers or visit the school website to find information and links to resources to assist you in ensuring your child’s safety online.
A huge thank you to the outgoing Executive P&C Team, in particular Kendra McDonald who served so well as P&C President. Congratulations to the new P&C President and Vice President, however they are still looking for a Secretary and Treasurer. Amanda Ferguson and Olivia Osment are experienced P&C members and I am sure they will represent the parent body extremely well this year, but they need help, so please contact Amanda if you can assist. I’m sure they would enjoy meeting many of you at the next P&C meeting. Research shows that the quality of your life is improved by mindful habits such as volunteering and being a part of a community. Give it a go and join the P&C in any capacity even just come along to find out what is happening.
Kiss and Drive
Thank you to all the parents who use our Kiss and Drive with consideration of road rules, safety and an appreciation of the efforts of the volunteer Roadwise helpers. This initiative is not run by the school staff, but by the P&C Roadwise Committee. The P&C saw a need to take action when there was no structure to the parking and picking up of students. The Kiss and Drive is an excellent way to ensure the timely and safe pick up and drop off of students. If everyone follows the simple rules, it is quite quick (usually all students are picked up in a 15-20 min timeframe) and safe as children are either at Kiss and Drive, with their parents going to the parked cars or walking home using the Pedestrian Crosswalks the Roadwise Committee have established through the Council.
For new parents who may not be aware of the process for Kiss and Drive, please follow these simple instructions:
After School: Please be understanding and courteous to the volunteers - they are giving up their time to help you and your children.
- Please do not park in the Kiss and Drive area or leave your car at any time. The area is closed until the siren time as students will not be there prior to the end of the day and you can’t park to wait for them.
- Cars are to keep moving, no obstruction of the roundabout and roads leading to the kiss and drive should occur. If your child is not yet at the shelter please continue around the school as directed by the volunteers.
- Students are instructed to only enter the first four cars to ensure they are safe and the line moves in an orderly way. Please do not call them to enter the car anywhere but in the Bays in the Kiss and Drive designated area.
- Students will be directed to enter your car on the curb-side, never the road-side of the car.
- It is dangerous to perform a U-Turn in the Broadview to re-join the queue please continue around the school or the shops to re-join the Kiss and Drive queue, it takes only a few minutes and provides time for your child to get to the shelter area.
- The process of Kiss and Drive usually takes only 15-20 mins if all follow the procedure, and is a very short time to ensure your child is safe.
In the Morning: There are no volunteers to monitor the flow of traffic, please follow these simple rules.
- Do not park or leave your car for any reason, if you need to walk your child into the school use a parking space elsewhere around the school, however please do not use the Staff Carpark as all bays have been allocated.
- Pull up at the highest bay possible to enable cars behind you to access the Kiss and Drive too.
- Students should exit the car from the curb side never the road side.
Thank you.
If you have 20 minutes that you could spare on any day of the week, please consider volunteering for the Roadwise Committee. It is an easy job once the year gets underway and all parents understand the system, our Admin Team are on hand to assist you and this year we can offer a parking space in the staff car park for the volunteer on Kiss and Ride.
We view parents as partners in student’s educational journey and I encourage you if you haven’t already to become a member of the P&C. We also work closely with our School Board and you are welcome to attend the Annual Public School Board Meeting which will take place at 5.00pm on Wednesday 2nd March, 2016 in the school library.
Parking
We are aware that parking around the school is difficult, however please refrain from parking on private property, verges or areas not designated for parking. We have received a number of complaints from the neighbouring houses regarding damage caused by cars to reticulation. The Shire of Wanneroo Ranger will be attending the school on various days in the next few weeks. Please note that we have been advised that cars, which are being illegally parked, will be fined $100. Please be courteous and patient at all times.
It is wonderful to see the students during school time and the families after school and weekends get so much fun from the Nature Playground. Please help keep it in great condition, if we work together more of these spaces can be created for the benefit of all.
Kind regards,
Leanne White

1) Helping Kids Leapfrog Their Difficulties
2) Managing Kids Who Won't Take No For An Answer
Psychology Services Available to Students, Parents and Teachers in 2016
Many children and adolescents encounter developmental, social, emotional and behavioural problems. They don’t feel good about themselves and they struggle at school. For some students the playground is a frightening place. Others have difficulties with motivation and relationships. Many children fail to develop adequate social skills, emotional management skills and motivation skills. They struggle to make friends, manage their anxiety and fear, or deal with their anger.
Psychology services will be provided by onPsych and will compliment the current service that we get from our school psychologist. Our cluster will have access to a psychologist who will help students deal with a wide range of issues including, but not limited to:
Recognise and manage anxiety, fear and stress
Motivation and self-talk
Making and keeping friends
Controlling anger and frustration
Impulse control
Dealing with bullies
Learning techniques to help deal with ADHD
Early intervention services provided by onPsych in social, emotional and behavioural problems will make a positive difference to a child’s future. If your child qualifies under the Medicare guidelines they can access the services at no cost at school. The service is completely confidential.
There are three steps to access onPsych services:
Step One:
If you feel your child would benefit from working with a psychologist, in either individual or small group sessions, you will need to talk to Natalie Bracegirdle, Deputy Principal, she will help you document your concerns and goals for your child.
Step Two:
Take this documentation to your GP or Paediatrician and request a referral to an onPysch psychologist. When making your appointment you will need to notify reception that the appointment is for a referral to a Psychologist- Medicare item 2710.
Step Three:
Return the referral to Natalie Bracegirdle who will email or fax the referral to onPsych.
This year we have a new Psychologist supporting us, Jess Chrystal is ready to start working with students in our school.
Should you have any further questions please contact Natalie Bracegirdle (available Tues-Fri).

Welcome to the 2016 Parent Funded Apple 1-1 Program
Thank you to all the parents of Year Four students and new senior students who have joined the program this year. The beginning of the 1-1 Program for 2016 has been fabulous in terms of the support from parents. Many students have their laptops and are in the process of getting them prepared for the year. Teachers and students are spending the first couple of weeks establishing agreements that will give the grounding for high standards of self-regulation, at school and online. Explicitly teaching how to responsibly and appropriately use technology and communication tools provides students with the skills and knowledge to make informed and appropriate choices in the future. The technical aspects of the program are also being established in the first couple of weeks. This involves bringing the laptops up to a common operating system across the year levels, which meant many laptops needed to be upgraded to the 10.11 OS (El Capitan). The school has moved to the Department’s Standard Operating Environment 4.5 at the beginning of last year, which has meant a need to update wireless configurations and settings for the new server. This means that all students now have a single sign in at school and across the cluster, which will enable students to seamlessly use their laptops in any school in the cluster. All of the laptops are in the process of being reimaged, some have already been done, this may need to be redone as the image will be upgraded this week to El Capitan. Please make sure students back up their work every night on an external hard drive or thumb drive. As the machines are imaged a note is sent home with the students with information regarding setting up passwords and home wireless. The website also will have information and FAQ’s to assist you. The Cluster of schools share two technicians across the schools and at Landsdale we have a technician onsite every day except Wednesday. We are excited to begin the journey with your children to engage in rich 21st Century learning tasks and teach them how to become responsible digital citizens.
At Landsdale, we are working to create a realistic environment for learning; an environment where students are able to create, collaborate, share and explore in a safe and fun way. The laptop provides immediate access to a global education, and the variety of engaging activities that a laptop does beyond mere production makes it the ideal learning tool for all students.
The Parent Funded 1-1 Program enables our school funds to be directed toward improved infrastructure to support the increased opportunities for the students to access resources when, how and where they need them. Students are able to gain information more readily, explore possibilities, analyse data more effectively and develop creative and interesting ways of demonstrating their learning all at the point of need.
Our partnership with parents creates an environment that is technology rich and enables our students to gain the 21st Century skills needed to be successful now and in the future.
Check out the Website for all the updated information including a link to the 2016 package and pricing. We work with Winthrop Australia to provide the best value package for parents, if you compare all the specifications and inclusion of AppleCare, it is very good value. The ordering portal is available at anytime throughout the year, it usually takes approximately 2-3 weeks for delivery to the school.
Cybersafety
The Australian Government webpage for the ‘Office of the Children’s eSafety Commissioner’ has a number of excellent resources, such as videos and FAQ sections, with a wide variety of practical advice and guidance for parents.
As the year goes on we will look at particular areas in greater detail. For now, please find below the link to the parent resources page.

Finding the balance between kids time online at any age can be a challenge for some families.
‘Our Pact’ is a free app that can be used to regulate Internet access on Apple mobile devices. The Android version ‘Our Pact Jr’ will be released very shortly.
It is straightforward to use and is a powerful tool to help parents manage the time children spend on their mobile devices.

Library News
http://landsdalelibrary.weebly.com/
Our students have been so excited to get back into the Library! Each class has now visited the Library with their teacher to borrow books and everyone is settling nicely into the new routine.
If you are still unsure of your child’s allocated Library Day, click the link below to see the “Term 1 Library Book Change Timetable”:

Opening Times
Just a reminder that the Library is open for book borrowing at these times:
Before school - 8.30-8.50am - Mon-Fri
Lunchtime - 12.30-1.00pm - Mon, Tues, Thur, Fri (Closed Wed)
After school - 3.00-3.30pm - Mon-Thur (Closed Friday after school)
Lending Rules
Students may borrow two books for a period of two weeks. Books may be renewed if not required by other readers. Overdue notices are sent to classrooms every week. Please remind your child to return his/her library books by the due date. Library bags must be used for borrowing. These are available from the Uniform Shop and department stores. Shopping bags are also suitable to use as library bags.
Lunchtimes in the Library
The Library is open at lunchtimes from 12.30 - 1.00pm every day (except Wednesday). During lunchtimes, the children are supervised by one of our Deputy Principals, usually Mrs Mattock or Mrs Di-Sisto. Students are not allowed into the Library until the Deputy arrives to supervise them. They are regularly reminded of the “No Deputy, No Entry” rule. While in the Library, children may browse and borrow books, read and relax, draw and design, play board games, do jigsaw & floor puzzles, construct Lego figures, play with other construction materials, use various mobile devices or talk to their friends.
Scholastic Book Club
Issue 1 of Book Club has now closed. Ordered items are distributed to classrooms by our parent volunteer, Mrs Donna Reid, when they arrive at school. Please be aware that orders are dispatched from Sydney, so there is usually a two week turnaround from the time your order is placed.
Thank You to Parent Book Covering Volunteers
We would like to thank our parents for their prompt response to the request for book covering. Your assistance is greatly appreciated. We are now up to date with book covering. However, new books arrive in the Library on a daily basis. We will advertise for helpers in the newsletter when required.
On The Ball … with Mr P
Faction Captain Voting
Faction Captain voting took place on Friday, February 12. Well done to all the students that nominated and congratulations to all successful candidates. Attached is a list of all our Faction Leaders for 2016.
P&C News!
The Parents and Citizens Association (P&C) is a group of community minded people, supporting a collaborative school community where parents, students, staff, principal and the wider community work together to achieve the best educational and personal outcomes for all students and to meet the needs and aspirations of the whole school community.
The P&C is able to:
- Provide additional resources to be used to enhance student learning;
- Provide parents with opportunities to be involved in their child’s education; and
- Convey parent views to the school's decision-making bodies.
Furthermore, research has shown that parent involvement in a child’s education makes a significant contribution to the child’s success at school.
Our AGM was held last Tuesday and I would like to thank those who attended, especially the newcomers, it was great to see some new faces. Thank you to Olivia Osment for volunteering as Vice President and RoadWise co-ordinator and Sally Pellegrini for continuing her role as safety house co-ordinator.
We still have the following vacancies:
Treasurer and Secretary – Without these positions filled, the P&C is unable to operate effectively and efficiency.
Fundraising co-ordinator – Used to co-ordinate fundraising activities to raise funds to enhance the school and provide much needed resources to provide our children with the best opportunities available.
In recent years the P&C has funded:
- The NatureScape in the Pre-Primary area and the upper oval area, with access provided to all children and the community on weekends.
- Sporting resources such as equipment, faction marquees and sports carnival ribbons.
- Electronic whiteboards
- Outdoor seating around the school.
- Outdoor play toys for Kindy and Pre-Primary
- Classroom resources
- Stage used for MAD production
- Much, much more
Thank you to all the past and present members of the P&C for your contributions as your support has provided these resources and equipment to Landsdale Primary. Your time and effort has definitely not gone unnoticed.
This year there will be some great fundraising opportunities for parents and students to get involved in. These include an Easter Raffle, Mother’s Day Stall, Father’s Day raffle, Disco and Book Fair to name a few.
If you are interested in volunteering for any of these roles or events, whether you have an hour spare or more, your help is greatly appreciated by the P&C, the Staff and the Students so please contact me at anferg77@gmail.com or 0402179511.
The management of Kiss and Drive has been challenging over the last 12 months. So far this year, we have had only 2 volunteers and various school staff attempting to co-ordinate this important role. Thank you to those people for their efforts and thank you to the school members who use kiss and drive correctly.
We are still in need of many volunteers to ensure this service is able to run efficiently. Our new Roadwise Co-ordinator will be sending home guidelines in the near future for the efficient and smooth running of kiss and drive. Additional copies will be available from the front office.
The role of kiss and drive is important to co-ordinate and direct adults and children to ensure it runs safely, quickly and smoothly. It is vital that everyone adheres to the guidelines of kiss and ride, as this will ensure the safety of our children. Our co-ordinators are volunteers and will direct you to ensure the efficient collection of your children, please follow their directions in a courteous manner. All members of the school community should treat one another with courtesy and respect especially if that community member is contributing to your child’s safety.
In closing I would just like to thank Kendra McDonald, our outgoing President, Keera Bull, our outgoing Vice President and Emma Dear, our outgoing Treasurer for all the hard work, commitment and time they put in last year. You guys are amazing!

Our students really enjoy participating in the Commonwealth Bank School Banking program and to keep this program running we need your help.

Landsdale Child Health Clinic
Please see the message below from the Landsdale Child Health Clinic Nurse who is based at the Landsdale Pharmacy.
As I appreciate that school drop off and pick up is a busy time of day with difficulties of parking I am sure you can respect the frustration of clients attending appointments and staff of not being able to park at work at the beginning of the working day and post community visits finishing at school pick up. When out in the community we have large baggage to carry and Occupational health and safety policy's to abide, we work a very busy and tight schedule and our time is paramount for this reason I ask all parents to respect the new parking bays signage delegated for community child health nurses and utilise the new extension to the community centre car park.
Your cooperation will be greatly appreciated.

City of Wanneroo – Museum in a Box
The City of Wanneroo is thrilled to launch our very own Museum in a Box program for 2016. This exciting outreach program has been designed for use by educational institutions throughout Perth but will first be offered to schools in the local Wanneroo area.
We have designed and curated four different boxes, each addressing a different person or subject connected to World War One and the Wanneroo area. Students will learn about Richard Smales who died on the Somme and Vincent Berriman who was fortunate enough to return home. We also cover the important role of the Red Cross on the home front and examine the interesting life of AANS Nurse, Sr. Anne Donnell. Each box contains real museum specimens and artefacts, images, DVDs, CDs, books and educational resources. They will be available to borrow in pairs so that students can obtain an understanding of the role of both men and women in the Great War.
The four boxes will be on display in the Great Court in the Wanneroo Library and Cultural Centre from 1 April to 1 July 2016 with bookings available in the new year for the boxes to be used by your students. Stay tuned for further details on this exciting program and how to be involved. ANZAC Museum in a Box is a collaborative project between the City of Wanneroo, The Department of Veterans Affairs and the Australian Government.
Please see the flyer for more information.
