24 March 2016
From the Principal
Dear Parents and Families,
It was fabulous to be TV stars for a short while last week, with Matt Bennett, Lisa Sampey and Kristin Bunn showing what our kids are capable of in Code-Topia and STEM activities. They and the students did a remarkable job this early in the year to demonstrate the range of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths that these rich activities can address. I would like to thank all of the parents who responded online about the presentation of the piece. You enlightened everyone to the fact that at Landsdale not only do we have technology but we also have a balance of wonderful programs and environments that ensure our students get the best of all approaches. Overall I think it was a very positive exposure for our school.
This week I have noticed that many students are not wearing hats that will protect them from the sun. The School Board and the school have endorsed the Dress Code for students and only navy blue bucket or broad brimmed hats are to be worn. This week the teachers will be extra vigilant in ensuring students who do not have a bucket or broad brimmed hat on are not playing in the sun, they will be directed to covered areas.
The safety of children continues to be a concern at the end of the school day. It has been brought to my attention that many parents are not directing their children to go to Kiss and Drive to be picked up, instead they are picking them up at the service entrance or across the road on the lawns of people’s houses. The service entrance at the end of the day is very busy with after school care cars and buses entering and leaving and many students with bikes and scooters exiting from the pathway. It is very dangerous to pull into the entrance or to use it as a pick up point or to allow your child to cross the road in between heavy traffic. On Friday I watched as a parent called their child over the road in front of oncoming traffic, I realise the cars are not going fast but I have witnessed a child hit by a car in this exact way. The child survived but had a broken limb and a nasty shock, and the parent who unavoidably hit him was devastated. Please do not put your child or community members in this position. If you have parked in a bay, students can enter the car from the verge safely. If you cannot find a parking bay, you need to go around the school again, not stop in the middle of the road, across the road or service entrance and put your child and others at risk. Also if you instruct your child to wait for you anywhere except the Kiss and Drive, please be aware there is no adult supervision as we provide that at Kiss and Drive.
The P&C is a wonderful help to our school and your children’s educational experience. It really is a terrific group of people and if you haven’t already please come to a meeting or touch base with one of the members to join their ranks.
The Roadwise Committee provide the volunteers for the Kiss and Drive and now that the procedures are becoming well known by parents, it is a fairly quick and easy duty. For 30 minutes of your time once a week, you can ensure a valuable service to the school is continued. Please contact the P&C to help out, I assure you it is way easier and quicker to have a Kiss and Drive than hundreds of parents trying to find a parking space. If you do volunteer, you are guaranteed a parking space in the staff car park for the day you assist.
Please remember that Day 1 of Term 2 is the first day of swimming lessons for Year 1, 2 and 4 (with the exception of LA5, 11 and 17 who will be attending swimming later in the year). Payments should have been received by today. If you have not yet paid, please organise for that to be done prior to the end of the term.
This year our ANZAC service assembly will have a slightly later starting time, commencing at 9.00am on Friday 8th April outside the undercover area. We would love to see as many parents as possible attend to help mark our respect to those who fought and died in all wars.
All our School Council/Ministers will participate in the service along with all choir students as well as students who are members of the Guides and Scouts. Prior to the service the canteen will be providing a breakfast which students will need to pre-order.
We are all looking forward to the Easter Break and I wish you all a happy family time. Please also remember that school is closed on Easter Tuesday.
Regards
Leanne White

Library News

Ease into eBooks over the Easter Break!
Just a reminder that the Library will be closed on:
Friday 25th March (Good
Friday)
Monday 28th March (Easter Monday)
Tuesday 29th March (Easter Tuesday)
If your child misses out on changing his/her library book due to the Easter closure, please remember that they can do so before or after school on any day that the Library is open for business.
The final closing date for all Term 1 loans is Friday 1st April. All library books are due back on or before this date. There will be NO class book borrowing during Week 10 (Monday 4th-Friday 8th April). This week is reserved for returns only, in preparation for the school holiday break.
eBooks
Another great way of accessing reading material for your child at ANY time of day or night, is get onto the LANDSDALE PRIMARY SCHOOL DIGITAL LIBRARY (commonly called eBooks or the eLibrary). If your child hasn’t yet borrowed an eBook, we’d like to help them do so as soon as possible. Each student has been issued with their eBook Username and Password by their class teacher. (These authentication details can also be obtained from the Library).
Here’s how to access eBooks:
- Hit the Landsdale Primary School Digital Library OverDrive website (and Bookmark this link):
http://landsdaleps.lib.overdrive.com/
- Use the HELP? screen to find your way around the site (the green “help question mark?”) near the Search box.
This is a good introduction for parents and students to find their way around the site. It may also answer some of your FAQ’s.
- To borrow an eBook, you need to sign in to your account with your allocated Username & Password.
Username = L (capital L for Landsdale) followed by your child’s Student Reference Number (assigned by the Office on enrolment) with NO spaces in between. eg: L2434
Password = first initial of the student’s Given Name, followed by the first 3 letters of their Surname, in lower case and with no spaces.
eg: Dora Explorer = dexp
Please note that on the eBooks Sign In screen, Username is called “Library card number” and Password is called “PIN”. (Different terms for the same thing).
- Once your child has signed in, they can:
- browse the digital collection (eBooks)
- browse the “New Additions” (recently purchased eBooks) under the Collections tab. We have just purchased over $1,500 worth of new content for 2016
- search for specific titles
- sample specific books by pressing the “Sample” button
- borrow a title by pressing the “Borrow” button
- request a “Hold” on an eBook that is on loan
- recommend a title to be added to the eBooks digital collection
- search for books at varying degrees of reading difficulty/levels by using the “Advanced Search” facility
- Students can log onto our OverDrive eBooks website on any computer/tablet/iPad/Mac or mobile device at home or at school.
- Lending Rules
Loan Limits = three (3) eBooks can be borrowed at any one
time
Loan Period = 14 days
Hold Limit = three (3) books at a time
- Once the expiry date is reached, the eBook that your child has borrowed will be automatically returned by the system, meaning no more overdue loans! If a title is available to renew, the “Renew” option button will appear within three (3) days of the title’s expiry date.
- The best way to get your child borrowing an eBook is to dive in and give it a go! We think they will enjoy their eBook experience.
- Students may request titles to be added to the digital library by using the “Recommend a Title” option or by submitting their request directly to Mrs Murray in the Library. She will then try to source the requested title directly from OverDrive.
- To familiarise yourself with OverDrive eBooks, you might like to view this short Help video, “Getting Started with OverDrive Overview” at the link below:
http://help.overdrive.com/
- If you have any questions about eBooks or problems signing in to your child’s account, please inform Mrs Murray in the Library so she can resolve the issue with OverDrive (the company that supplies our eBooks and administers the website).
Scholastic Book Club
Issue 2 of Book Club has now closed. Orders are currently being processed by Scholastic. They will be distributed to classes as soon as they arrive back at school. We anticipate that this will take place before the school holiday break.
Thanks to Book Covering Volunteers
We had an excellent response to our request for assistance to cover reading books and library books. Thank you to all the wonderful parent and grandparent volunteers for helping to get these books into the hands of our students so quickly.
On The Ball … with Mr P
Interschool Tennis
Congratulations to all the participants who competed in the 2016 Hot Shots Tennis Tournament at the State Tennis Centre on Friday. Landsdale gave a very good account of themselves with the boys team finishing 3rd and the girls 7th overall.
The tournament was played under the new tennis ‘Fast 4’ rules and scoring system. I was very proud of the students of how they applied themselves not just on Friday, but leading up to the day during training and their knowledge of the new format, given the tournament was at fairly short notice and I was on leave for some of the time.
Thank you to all of the parents that came down to watch and assist also. Your help is much appreciated!
P&C President’s Report
Thank you to all who attended last week’s P&C Meeting. A number of items were discussed but firstly I would like to say a massive thank you to Alysha Ferguson for stepping up to take on the Treasurer position. Also, a massive thank you to our Treasurer from last year, Emma Dear, for her time, effort and commitment. On behalf of the P&C, the staff and the students, thank you to both of you. Without volunteers like you, the P&C would definitely not be able to run.
We are however, still in need of a Secretary so if anyone would like to step up for this position or would like more information as to what is involved, please contact me at anferguson1977@gmail.com
KISS 'N' DRIVE
Kiss 'n' Drive seems to be going well at the moment and most parents using this service are doing the right thing and following the directions of the wardens. Thank you to those parents who do use Kiss 'n' Drive correctly. We are still in desperate need for volunteers for this service to run. A big thank you to all our current volunteers and a special thank you to Debbie Glasson for her time and effort by stepping in when no other volunteers are available.

If you would like to volunteer, or if you're interested in organising an event or if you would just like information regarding the P&C, please contact me at anferguson1977@gmail.com
In closing, I would like to say thank you to everyone for the warm welcome and support I have received since becoming the new President. I have big shoes to fill but can ensure I will do my best.

Interested in Becoming A Safety House?
Safety House is a community based "Good Neighbour" program of volunteer householders. It's easy to be a Safety House, it costs you absolutely nothing and you could be doing something important to help protect vulnerable young children. You can make a difference in your local community.
Who can be a Safety House?
- A Safety Householder must be a caring adult who is usually in or around their home during school travel time and be ready and willing to assist any child who might seek help at their door.
- Your house must have easy street access to the front door, no screening walls or trees and a Safety House sign easily visible from the street.
- Before you can be a Safety House, everyone living in the house aged 14 and over must consent to having a continuously monitored police check which is fully paid for by Safety House.
If you are interested or have any queries, please contact Sally Pellegrini, Landsdale Primary's Safety House Coordinator, at sally.pellegrini@gmail.com or leave a message at the school office on 9302 4100.
School Banking at Landsdale Primary School!
Since the beginning of 2016, we have had approximately 20 new students enrol in the school banking program. This program teaches our kids to become regular savers and also helps the school at the same time as the Commonwealth Bank gives the school a commission for each new student who signs up and commission for each and every deposit that each child makes.
We are still in need of volunteers between 8am and 9am on a Thursday morning to reduce the amount of times each volunteer is needed throughout the term.
If your child is interested in signing up for the School Banking Program, this is the procedure:
- Take your child's birth certificate (and some ID for yourself) to any Commonwealth Bank. The bank will set up an account for your child when you are there.
- Bring your child's account number to school banking with a deposit (if you wish) and they will be assigned a student number by one of our volunteers and given their own deposit book and cover.
- Each week, the child may deposit as much (or as little) as they like. For each deposit made, the child receives a silver token. When they reach 10 tokens, they are eligible for a reward.
Just to make parents aware, siblings of children who attend Landsdale Primary School are eligible to begin school banking as well. Just follow the same procedure as above.
If you have any questions about the School Banking Program or you would like to help on occasion, please contact Amanda Ferguson at anferguson1977@gmail.com or alternatively on 0402 179 511.
