From the Principal
Dear Parents and Families,
Throughout the last couple of weeks I have listened to Landsdale students, parents, teachers, education assistants and support staff regarding what they think of the school. Here is what I have found. Many people are very proud of their school. The vast majority of students are well mannered and respectful. I congratulate you on bringing up your children well.
Teachers and education assistants are working hard to improve the wellbeing of students and their academic performance. I now need to work with the school board in defining what should be achieved because the environment in which we live is constantly changing, so we have to think hard about what we want our children to achieve at the end of their time at Landsdale Primary.
You will be given the opportunity in the near future to have a say in what values should be taught in the school. Stay tuned.
The construction of the East Landsdale Primary School is moving ahead. The boundaries of the new school are being drawn-up and are going through governmental processes to ensure fairness. This boundary is roughly equidistant between Landsdale and East Landsdale primary schools. As soon as the boundary is published we will let you know. Landsdale Primary students who live within the boundaries of East Landsdale will not be asked to leave our school. That decision is entirely a parent decision.
Regards,
Tony Beswick

School Learning Journey Open Night – Wednesday 25th May
Our School Learning Journey evening (Open Night) this year will be held on Wednesday 25th May, Week 5 of this term.
Times are: 4.30pm – 6.30pm (PP-6), and from 4.00pm – 6.00pm at the Trentham Road Annex (K). Please note for security reasons finishing times must be adhered to, especially at the offsite annex.
Classroom teachers will open their classrooms in a learning journey format, with activities and challenges for students to undertake with their parents. These activities reflect the learning that occurs in classrooms, and allows parents to experience current curriculum content and school priorities. Specialist staff will also be providing experiences at various locations around the school. Each parent will receive a passport to help them navigate their way around the activities. Please remember this is not a time for interviews with your child’s teacher, however, friendly and courteous interaction is encouraged!
Classroom activities will take approximately 15 minutes to complete, and parents are encouraged to also visit:
- The basketball courts/under covered area for physical challenges with Mr P.
- The library with Mrs Murray, where there will be activities based around a picture book, which parents can borrow and read at home.
- The library to check out the huge range of parenting books available for borrowing.
- The Art Room with Mrs Nixon.
- The Music Room with Miss Rogerson.
- The Literacy Room with Mrs Della Gatta and Mrs Woods, if students attend classes in there. (This room won’t be open until around 5pm, due to DSF Literacy Classes until 4.30pm)
- The Library for an Italian display with Mrs Scott.
- The Science Room, LA 19 with Mr Cavallaro and Mrs Bell.
Parents will also be required to complete a parent survey while at school, either in the wet areas of the blocks or in the library.
We look forward to welcoming all parents to our open night.

Hats On Day!
Wednesday 25th May (Week 5) is “HATS ON DAY!” On this day, we invite all our students and staff to put their hats on for our special “HATS ON DAY!” Wear a hat of any kind for the day. (This is not a full costume free dress/dress up day…just a simple hat is required). It can be a hat from home or one your child has made from recycled materials. Wear your favourite cap, sombrero, beanie, fez, top hat, pith helmet, tam, bike helmet, slouch, bowler hat, cowboy hat, straw boater, bonnet, headscarf, hard hat, mortarboard, shower cap, veil, etc…
** Please note that students will still need to bring and wear their Landsdale Primary School hat in the playground at recess and lunchtime.**
Our “Hats On Day” is to celebrate the 2016 National Simultaneous Storytime Day, which takes place all over Australia every year on this day. This year’s selected picture book is “I Got This Hat” by Jol and Kate Temple.
National Simultaneous Storytime is an annual reading campaign that aims to encourage more young Australians to read and enjoy books. Now in its 16th successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children's book that explores age-appropriate themes, and addresses key learning areas of the Western Australian Curriculum for Years 1 to 6 and the pre-school Early Learning Years Framework. Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country.
By supporting National Simultaneous Storytime, we aim to:
- promote the value of reading and literacy;
- promote the value and fun of books;
- promote an Australian writer and publisher;
- promote storytime activities in school libraries and communities around the country;
- provide opportunities to involve parents, grandparents and community members to participate in and enjoythe occasion.
In 2015 over 500,000 children at over 3,100 locations across Australia took part in National Simultaneous Storytime, reading the book, “The Brothers Quibble”, written and illustrated by Aaron Blabey, enjoying a range of supporting educational activities, songs, games, dress ups and lots of fun.
This year NSS takes place on Wednesday 25th May at 11am (AEST). We will be sharing the picture book, “I Got This Hat”, written by Jol and Kate Temple and illustrated by Jon Foye.
Don’t forget to read the NSS book “I Got This Hat” or listen to the comedian Anne Edmonds reading the story at Story Box Library:

Winter Sports
This term, students in years 5 & 6 have been practising and competing in a number of Winter Sports on Friday afternoons. On 3rd June we play a ‘friendly’ against Ashdale Primary School. The culmination of all this training will end with a Lightning Carnival to be held at Kingsway Sporting Complex on Tuesday, 21st June.
All students will participate in the friendly, with year 6’s given first preference to represent the school at the Lightning Carnival.
There has been a change to the initial fixture, with the Football A team playing at Ashdale Primary School and Soccer Girls playing at Ashdale Secondary College.
If you are able to assist in washing footy jumpers, soccer shirts and socks after the Friendly that would be much appreciated as we need them ready for the Lightning carnival on 21st June.

Lapathon
Our annual school Lapathon will take place on Thursday, 26th May from 2pm on the bottom oval. Years 1-3 will run around an ‘inner circle’ whilst the years 4-6 students will run around an outer circle. This is a terrific fund raising activity so hopefully everyone can come on board and raise as much funds for the school as we can.
Legends Of Landsdale
Our school cross-country, the Legends of Landsdale, will take place on Friday, 24th June. This will be a busy week for students as the Lightning Carnival will take place on 21st June and the Cluster Muster on 23rd June. It will commence from 11.20am starting with the year 1’s followed by the year 2’s running approximately 600m. The year 3’s will commence after lunch followed by the year 4’s, then the year 5’s will commence their race at 2pm followed by the year 6’s. The distance for the year 3-6 events is approximately 1500m. I encourage all students to participate.
Again, we will participate in a local cross-country event at Penistone Reserve. We will be fielding the top 4 boy and girl students from years 1/2 (juniors) who run 600m, 3/4 (intermediate) who run 1300m and 5 and 6’s (seniors) who run 2000m. Selections will be based on their time from the Legends of Landsdale event, so there may be three year two students and one year 1 student representing the school in the junior division. This is in line with how the other schools nominate their competitors. This event will take place on Friday, 19th August.
Parents can independently nominate their children in the annual School Sport WA cross-country interschool event, please visit below for more information.

P&C President’s Report
Firstly, I would like to thank Leanne White for all the effort she has given the P&C while filling the principal role. It has been an absolute pleasure working with her on P&C initiatives and knowing we had her trust and support to allow us to do what we do to raise money to make this school great! So, on behalf of the P&C, thank you Leanne, for all your time, effort, commitment and support you have shown us. Secondly, I would like to welcome Tony Beswick, our new principal to Landsdale Primary P&C. We look forward to getting to know you and working with you in the near future to make our school even better.
As we settle in to Term 2, I would like to welcome new and old members to the Landsdale P&C Committee. Hopefully this term, we will receive greater participation in all things P&C. Recently, our Facebook page is reaching many more people within the school community. This is great to see because it means parents are becoming more aware of what we do and are wanting to be more involved. We are, however, still in need of a fundraising coordinator. While this is quite a big job, yet it is also one of the most fulfilling positions the P&C offer. The reward is that it is great to be able to see the smile on the kid’s faces after participating in an event they love or being able to play on new equipment they receive knowing we have raised the funds needed and have made a difference in their schooling lives. So if you, or anyone you know may be interested, please get them to contact me. Also, all executive positions on the P&C committee have now been filled which brings a huge sigh of relief to some of us and their efforts are greatly appreciated.
Since the last meeting, we have held two fundraisers for the school. The Easter Raffle, which raised $2,098 and the Mother’s Day Stall with donations starting off slowly at the beginning. We eventually got there in the end and raised $2,304.30. At one stage, we thought the stall would not be able to run due to a lack of donations but our persistence and communication through the P&C Facebook page paid off and our Mother’s Day Stall turned out to be quite successful. Thank you to all who contributed.
The 5c fundraiser has started this week and will be running for two weeks and the class that has the most 5c coins at the end of each week will earn a prize.
The Lapathon will be held on May 26th from 2pm – 3pm which is quickly approaching. This is another event the kids enjoy and parents have the opportunity to watch their children participate. It is also a great fundraiser for our school. I would like to thank Margaret Quirk, MLA, Member for Girrawheen, for her kind donation of a bike towards the school’s Lapathon.
WITHOUT THE HELP OF VOLUNTEERS, THESE EVENTS ARE UNABLE TO RUN so if you would like to volunteer for any of these events, or if you're interested in organising an event or if you would just like information regarding the P&C, please contact me at anferguson1977@gmail.com
You do not need to be a member of the P&C to volunteer. Everyone is welcome to help in any way they can and the P&C, Staff and especially the students, are very appreciative of all help that we do receive.
