25 August 2016

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Families,

The school board has completed the school vision statement which outlines the next three years’ worth of work. The vision focuses on Engage | Strive. That is we focus on innovation and creativity to produce students who are engaged and strive to be successful. We work together to develop students who are respectful, resilient, honest and embrace the strength in diversity.

There will be a school board meeting on 26th October, 2016 in which I will present the 2016 NAPLAN results and what we intend to do about them. The meeting begins at 3:00pm in the library.

Ms Leanne White will be the principal from next week until the end of the term as I will be on long service leave. I wish everyone a safe and exciting holiday.

Regards,

Dr Tony Beswick
Principal

Parent Steering Committee for the 1-1 Laptop Program

Next term we will be preparing our 2017, parent funded 1-1 Program for the Year 4 students next year. We would love to have more parents on our committee especially parents of this year’s Year 3 students as they will be new to the program next year.

Come along to the Parent Steering Committee for the Apple 1-1 Laptop Program and help us choose, plan for and implement the best program for your kids! The Steering Committee has been a vital part of the Program. They are involved in making the decision of what vendor and device to use, ensuring the parents concerns and views are heard and guiding the implementation. No skills or knowledge about computers are needed, just your interest, opinions and ideas on what might work best for your kids.

At the moment we have no Year 3 or 4 Parents on the committee and we would really love to have input from parents from all the year levels that are involved (or about to be) in the program. Please contact me if you are interested. We usually meet only once and occasionally twice a term. The next meeting is Tuesday 13th September.

What is STEM?

Our students will need many skills to be successful learners now and in the future. Lifelong learning requires the capacity to locate, consume, analyse and evaluate information to create knowledge. The literacies that underpin lifelong learning are broader and deeper than simply the ability to read and write.

While making sure students have a solid foundation in literacy and numeracy is our first priority, we need to build towards developing technological fluency, teamwork, systematic thinking, responsibility, self- assessment and inquiry.

The programs we have at Landsdale are developing these skills in our students through practical, real world learning activities and problem solving.

Our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) program is designed to provide the context for students to apply their literacy, numeracy, science and technology skills. Our senior classes with the benefit of the 1-1 laptop program are applying their learning in a variety of ways which we will highlight in future articles. This edition of the newsletter we have a glimpse of the rich learning tasks junior classes are undertaking.

In Year 2 & 3 the students are attending an incursion to learn how to construct machines with lego. We also have a lunch time Lego club for senior students this term and junior students next term that focuses on teams making simple machines and applying the concepts discovered to real world problems and challenges.

LA27 STEM Activities

LA 27 have been enthusiastically linking their classroom learning to the real world to engage and excite students about learning. One example of their learning experiences is the fabulous experience of planting, looking after and harvesting vegetable and herb gardens. This report from Mrs Marrion explains how it makes learning real and exciting.

We planted herbs and vegetables in Term 1 and 2 and had a hunt-the-potato treasure dig to harvest our potatoes so we could cook a yummy vegetable soup with our potatoes and herbs and also made damper which we ate with hot runny butter and yellow box tree honey.

Making damper was a great way of applying the maths we have been doing with multiplication. First, we had to work out how many lots of the damper recipe we had to make because the recipe only make 4 serves and we have 20 kids plus some hungry parents and a teacher who loves damper!! We had to work out enough ingredients to make several lots of damper (doubling or 5 times the quantity). We also had to work out how to make 5 lots of 3/4 of a cup of water when we didn't have a 3/4 cup measure!! That was some hard fractions!!

Some of us had to read a scale to measure 80 grams of butter and some of us had to work out how to read 185 mls of water on the jug. Mrs Marrion even made us work out the answer to 5 x 185 mls of water. Only 2 people got the right answer. Arnav used place value partitioning and extended number facts. Tyler used a number line, place value partitioning and some very clever number fact and skip counting that Mrs Marrion really had to concentrate to check!! Mrs Marrion tortured us with about an hour of hard maths before we had the fun of cooking and eating.

Some of us really learned how to work in a team and not argue about little things. We cooperated brilliantly and worked so well.

We are also learning about Sustainability and Active Citizenship in Geography, so planting, growing and eating healthy food from our school vegetable garden is teaching us about being responsible with the environment and also healthy. Charlotte told Mrs Marrion she didn't like her because now Charlotte loves veggies! Everyone loved the soup and damper. Sam asked for the damper recipe!

We want to really thank Mrs Argent (Max's mum) and Mrs Gallo-Kabay (Milan's mum) for coming in at very short notice and helping with the chaos of cooking.

Thursdays have become the day not to be away from school!!

Student Illness

We have had quite a few cases of gastro-like symptoms this week in the school.

Gastro is usually caused by a virus – or a bacterial or parasite infection. These germs cause inflammation of the gut wall, which leads to diarrhoea and vomiting.

Viral gastro is VERY contagious. You can help prevent the spread of gastro by making sure everyone in the family washes their hands regularly and doesn’t share drink bottles, cups or food utensils.

If your child has gastro, keep them home until there has been no vomiting or diarrhoea for at least 24 hours.

Cold and flu viruses are also making their presence known. Please be mindful that sending your child to school, even for a test or a few important periods can cause them to infect other students and staff.

Only send your child back to school when:

  • No Fever: Once the fever has been controlled for over 24 hours without medication.
  • Medication: Your child may return to school after taking medication a doctor has prescribed for a minimum of 24 hours, as long as they don't have a fever or other serious symptoms.
  • Only Mild Symptoms Present: Make sure to provide tissues for them and to give them an over-the-counter medicine that can help control the remaining symptoms.
  • Attitude and Appearance Improve: If your child is looking and acting like they are feeling much better and fatigue is managed.

Donations for Science

We are calling for donations of balls of wool for students to make a display for Science Week celebrating the brain. Balls can be dropped off at the science room (LA19) by the end of Week 6 (Friday 26th August).

Thank you,
Miss Joyce and Miss Bell

Interschool Cross-Country

Congratulations to all those students who represented Landsdale PS at Penistone Reserve at the Interschool Cross-Country last Friday. Most students came down to training on Monday and Thursdays and should be proud of their efforts. Special congratulations to Daphne B who was the champion girl in the junior events and Zak D took out 4th place in the corresponding boy’s race. We look forward to even more training next year!

2016 Faction Athletic Carnival Phys Ed Event Details

I have attached details for today’s Faction Athletics Carnival. The back-up for this day is tomorrow, 26th August, weather pending. I have also attached a map for the day, which may alter slightly.

As per last year, there will only be two divisions per running race this year and ribbons will be given out (1st-4th) after each rotation for each faction. Each rotation consists of 2 or 3 games, and it is planned each of these games will be played 5 times, ensuring maximum participation for students.

As with previous years, I expect the Faction Athletics Carnival will be well supported by students’ family and friends, which is always fantastic to see. This support is invaluable. To assist the teachers with student supervision and for the carnival to run as smoothly as possible, all spectators and supporters are asked to please keep well clear of the Faction bays, and to stay behind the marked areas on the oval, particularly the running track and team game events.

Our Interschool Athletic events are being held at Landsdale Primary School. The top placed runners will again represent Landsdale with the best times on the Faction Athletics Carnival in their running races to determine this, assuming we have access to timing gates this year. These students usually are selected from Division 1, but occasionally the top placed students in division 2 run a faster time than some lower placed students in the top division.

Interschool Athletics Events

September 13 (Tuesday): Interschool Jumps, Throws & Distance Events*
September 15 (Thursday): Interschool Athletics Carnival*

*All interschool events this year are being held at Landsdale Primary School.

P&C President’s Report

Our next fundraising initiative will be the faction carnival sausage sizzle held today. Our Federal member for Cowan, Dr Anne Aly and her team will be running this event this year so a massive thank you to her team and especially her, for taking the time out of her busy schedule to help us out.

As the end of the year approaches, we need more volunteers for Kiss n’ Drive this year and in particular, for next year. A couple of our regular volunteers will be leaving us as their kids will be attending high school. We need volunteers now so they can be shown how the kiss n' drive works. If the Kiss n' drive does have to close through lack of volunteers, the City of Wanneroo Rangers will also be notified and will come out to issue fines to those parking illegally.

It is imperative that we get new volunteers. It takes approximately 20 mins in the afternoon to do this so please consider helping out so the kiss n' drive remains open. A note will be sent home asking for volunteers in the coming weeks so please keep your eye out for it.

Our next meeting is being held on Tuesday 30th August at 7pm in the school staff room. Please feel free to come along.
