8 September 2016

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Families,

Our Principal, Dr Tony Beswick, is on leave until the end of term and I am the Principal during that time.

I was really pleased that Tony was here for the Faction Carnival to see how well supported and organised the event is and have the opportunity to interact with our wonderful parents. Congratulations to all our students on striving to do their personal best and demonstrating great sporting attitudes. A special well done to Grevillea on winning the Sportsmanship Trophy and Hovea for winning the Championship Trophy. We wish our Interschool Athletics Carnival participants well and know they will represent Landsdale with pride and determination to do their best. The Carnival this year is at Landsdale, with the Jumps and Throws on Tuesday 13th September and the main carnival Thursday 15th September.

Congratulations on the huge effort so many parents made to making the Book Week dress up day such a success. It was amazing to see the range of characters from books the students dressed up as and most importantly read about. The number of books borrowed to research the event was fantastic. Well done to Mrs Murray on her organisation of the event and the promotion of reading in our school.

Our focus on innovation and creativity is being well demonstrated by the implementation of our STEM activities such as the LEGO incursion for the junior students and the Challenge Based Learning occurring in our senior classes. I am looking forward to seeing the results of the student’s project work. A few of these projects will be on display at the STEM Expo at Ashdale Secondary College on the 11th October.

Please remember Monday the 10th October is a School Development Day and students do not attend, the first day of Term 4 is Tuesday 11th October.

Regards,

Leanne White
Principal

Students Not Returning to Landsdale in 2017

Please let us know if your children currently in Kindy to Year 5 will no longer be attending Landsdale Primary School next year because you are moving or changing schools. We are doing our best to get well organised for a smooth start to 2017 but we rely on your help in this important area. All schools are funded according to our enrolments so it is very important that we plan on accurate enrolment numbers. Families who know they will not be returning to Landsdale Primary School in 2017 are asked to click on the attached link or phone the school.

The Ashdale Cluster Parent Funded Apple 1-1 Laptop Program

As part of an Ashdale Cluster initiative Landsdale Primary School implemented the Parent Funded Apple One to One program in 2011 and the program is now in the 6th year and runs from Years 4-6. As an Independent Public School the partnership with parents enables us to provide our students with the best possible creative tools to achieve our vision of being engaged in innovative and rich learning tasks to prepare them for the future. We are now beginning the journey preparing our Year 3 students and their parents to join the program for 2017.

The program involves families being given the opportunity to purchase or lease an Apple laptop for their child. In partnership with Winthrop Australia, we have negotiated an offer that we believe is very advantageous to parents in terms of price, warranty and onsite technical servicing if purchased through Winthrop. Details about the program and how to order are on our website:

http://www.landsdaleps.wa.edu.au

In keeping with Landsdale’s vision of embedding technology, the One to One program enables students to learn the important skills that are essential to maximise their potential in a 21st Century classroom and workplace. They have, at point of need, access to information, applications and global experiences that enable deeper learning at home and at school.

The Apple laptops are particularly well suited to the education environment because they are loaded with software and applications that are great for getting students to extend their thinking and demonstrate their learning. They allow teachers to deliver engaging lessons with more students fully engaged in each learning opportunity. The laptops have excellent options for security and parental control over what their child is accessing and when.

With NAPLAN now being administered online, it is even more important for our students to develop the skills and familiarity with their laptop to prepare them well for this change. In the recent trial undertaken by all our Year 3 and 5 students it was pleasing to note how comfortable the Year 5 students in particular where in taking the tests online. After 2 years of the 1-1 laptop program their skills are at the requisite high level.

Our cluster Parent information Session will be held at Ashdale Secondary College early next term. The day and date will be advertised in the next newsletter and on Facebook.

Our next Parent Steering Committee meeting will be held on Tuesday 13th September at 5pm in the staff room. We are looking for new parent representatives, so if you are interested, no technical knowledge needed, please join us.
