17 November 2016

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Families,

The members of the school board have been fantastic this year. I would like to thank the members who are:

Keera Bull (Chairperson)
Abby Attwood
Kahli Bourke
Mimma Della Gatta
Kendra McDonald
Rohan Osment
Margaret Quirk MLA
Leanne White
Debbie Yates

They have created the school vision and viewed how we are performing as a school, which has added to the way the school delivers education.

There is a great opportunity for the teachers to listen to a world-leading expert in student assessment next year on Friday 26th May, 2017. This is a different school development day than was previously advertised, but the Ashdale Cluster Board has agreed to the change of dates. Subsequently, the school development days for 2017 are:

Term 1

Monday 30th and Tuesday 31st January

Tuesday 7th March

Term 2

Friday 26th May

Term 4

Friday 27th October

Friday 15th December

The one-to-one laptop program has been a real strength of this school for many years. It has helped many children adapt to our ever-reliance on digital technologies. Certainly, we all know that a one-off purchase of a MacBook lasts 3-5 years. We would like to thank you for your support of this important program.

Regards,

Dr Tony Beswick
Principal

Students Not Returning to Landsdale in 2017

Please let us know if your children currently in Pre-Primary to Year 5 will no longer be attending Landsdale Primary School next year because you are moving or changing schools. We are doing our best to get well organised for a smooth start to 2017 but we rely on your help in this important area. All schools are funded according to our enrolments so it is very important that we plan on accurate enrolment numbers. Families who know they will not be returning to Landsdale Primary School in 2017 are asked to click on the attached link or phone the school.

We still have Kindergarten places available for 2017. Please see the front office if a place is required. Jennifer.Shepherd@education.wa.edu.au

1-1 Laptop Program Latest Update

The Parent Funded Apple 1-1 Laptop program preparations are underway. Year 3 parents and new parents have attended a Parent information meeting at Ashdale Secondary College in week 2 this term and we will have a Landsdale Primary School based information meeting for parents in Week 8.

Thank you to the parents who have expressed their interest in the program and are keen to begin the purchasing of their laptop. We did close the purchasing Portal while we waited for the announcement from Apple regarding the model of laptop offered for the education pricing. The Macbook Air 11” laptop has been discontinued and the Macbook Air 13” is now the device offered for the 1-1 Program. The portal to purchase the Macbook Air 13” laptop through Winthrop Australia is now open and you can order at any time through this portal. Our school website has the link to the ordering portal.

http://www.landsdaleps.wa.edu.au

While we did love the Macbook Air 11”, the 13” is every bit as good if not better as it is a later model and slightly larger screen. It is still very light and many of our students have chosen this size over the 11” previously and have found it just as portable.

Some Apple resellers may have remaining stock of the MacAir 11” and be offering special deals due to it being discontinued, it is worthwhile always to “shop” around for the best deal for you. It does not matter to the school where you purchase the laptop, our partnership with Winthrop is to ensure the best price for the device offered and to have the best service option for parents through them.

If you have questions regarding the purchase through the portal or other vendors, please contact the school for clarification. Or attend the Parent information meeting on the 29th November at 4.30pm in LA 16/17.

STEM Champion Letter

Dear Ashdale Cluster Year 4 & 5 Parents/Guardians,

The Ashdale STEM Institute is running a series of exciting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) workshops for Ashdale Cluster Year 4 & 5 students and their family members in the Ashdale Secondary College Creative Lab during weeks 7, 8 and 9 of this term.

Understanding STEM education is vitally important for students to become innovative, global thinkers, capable of finding creative solutions to real world problems. We believe that by working in partnership with our families, we will better enable students to consider future career pathways in STEM.

Three separate workshops will be run from 5.00pm to 6.30pm on the following dates. Each student and a family member will be able to engage in a range of STEM activities followed by a pizza dinner at the conclusion of each workshop.

Library News

P&C Book Fair A Huge Success!

Once again, the P&C Book Fair was such a hit with students, parents and staff. Thank you so much to Mrs Amanda Ferguson and her team of hardworking volunteers who planned, promoted, organised and operated the 2016 Book Fair. The kids absolutely love the Book Fair and really look forward to it each year. So we are very grateful to the parents who give so freely of their time to bring amazing books to our students in this fun environment.

Total sales for this year’s Book Fair were $9,466.20. Due to the generous support of our school community, the Library received $1,893.20 in commission. This will be used to purchase new release books early in the 2017 school year and will contribute to the purchase of a new eBook subscription. We hope all the students are enjoying reading the new books they purchased at the Book Fair. Thank you to every parent, student and staff member who passed through the Book Fair and supported this terrific event.

Final Issue of Book Club for 2017

Issue 8 of Scholastic Book Club closes on Friday 25th November at 9am. Please send your orders up to the Front Office before the closing date. If you are using the online ordering platform (LOOP), please be aware that the closing date is still the same (Friday 25th November). We would like to thank Mrs Donna Reid, our incredibly energetic Book Club Parent Volunteer, for tirelessly processing all the Book Club orders for 2016. It was greatly appreciated by all the students, parents and staff who benefit from having Book Club at Landsdale Primary.

Summer Reading Club Starts Soon!

Over the next few weeks, please look out for promotional materials and information about the Summer Reading Club. This is a fantastic opportunity to keep your kids reading over the summer break so their motivation and reading fluency does not slip. The SRC (Summer Reading Club) commences on 1st Dec 2016 and runs until 31st Jan 2017. Every student (primary or high school) is eligible to participate. This year’s theme is “Heroes and Villains.” We invite our readers to get ready for a summer filled with heroes, villains, sidekicks and more! Be the hero. Be the Villain. Unleash your imagination with a summer full of reading adventures.

Participation in the Summer Reading Club is easy. You can register online via the link below or simply pop into the Library to pick up your paper registration form. We also have SRC stickers, posters, book marks, tatoos and other incentives for our students to take when they register either online or in person for the SRC.

You do not have to purchase lunch bags, you do not have to have a printed copy of the menu and you do not have to stress over whether your child has put in their lunch order.

http://www.ouronlinecanteen.com.au/

LATE Lunch Orders

A reminder that if our child hands in their lunch order after 10:00am then they will only be offered a vegemite or cheese sandwich.

Volunteers

We are still looking for volunteers to help in the canteen on a Monday. Please check the Volunteer Roster for the days that we need volunteers.

P&C President’s Report

Firstly, I would like to thank everyone who volunteered their time with the Book Fair. It was a busy week but one the students enjoyed immensely. The commission the library receives from holding this event will go towards new resources for the library. These resources are then made available to teachers, students and parents to utilise at their convenience.

The P&C were asked by the City of Wanneroo to organise and operate a sausage sizzle for the formal opening of Sam Trott’s park on the 5th November. This event was invitation only and the P&C were honoured to be asked to participate.

Don’t forget the fete is just over a week away. Lock in Friday November 25th from 4:30pm-8:30pm for a great family night out. A lot of time and effort by volunteers goes into the organisation of this event so it would be great to see as many people as possible attending. The proceeds of this event will be going toward outdoor play equipment for our students to use. A big thank you to Melissa Kelleher and Debbie Glasson for their time and commitment to organising this event, which will be great fun.

It is great to see so many people doing the right thing when using our Kiss N Drive service but there are still a few people dropping and picking their kids up on Warradale Terrace at the service entry to the school. This is a dangerous place to stop and pick up/drop off kids as several trucks and vans use this driveway for entry and exit to the school grounds. This road can also become quite busy at peak times. Please, if you are dropping your kids off or picking them up, please use the Kiss N Drive at the front of the school. Your child’s safety is paramount and this is the safest place for them to meet you.

Our last P&C meeting for the year will be held on Tuesday 22nd November at 7pm in the school staffroom. It’s open for everyone to come along, so please feel free to come along.

Bring Home a Big Brother or Sister and Bring French Culture to Life!

Why not volunteer to host an international student from France next year? We have a small group of delightful French students coming to Australia for 10 weeks to immerse in local Australian culture, experience our High schools, sports, environment and lifestyle. All the French students are around 15 years old, speak excellent English, have their own spending money, cover all school expenses ,and we arrange all aspects of their program. They are looking forward to joining an Australian family for a short term. It’s fun and interesting to help these young people achieve their Australian dream.
