15 December 2016

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Families,

What a wonderful school Landsdale Primary School has been over 2016. I have been surprised at the amount of innovation that occurs in the school to meet the needs of students. Yet, there have also been some developments to make the school even more successful. These changes have focused on:

  1. Teachers generating specific plans together for struggling and students who need extension;
  2. Delivering a maths extension program;
  3. Injecting more funds into technology, which has included a $20,000 boost to iPads to improve learning in the junior years;
  4. Developing innovative programs such as “Huff and Puff” sensory program for students with learning difficulties;
  5. Work is beginning on constructing a $150,000 senior “Jungle Jim” type of playground during the holidays with thanks to school funding and the P&C;
  6. Becoming a Lead National Quality Standards school;
  7. Creating a parent representative initiative which has been initiated by Mel Knight; and
  8. Winning a PALS Award

The school board has also played a significant part in constructing a new business plan and keeping an eye on how we are progressing. Next year, we intend to develop a tennis academy as an extension program and ask more students about what they think of the school.

I would like to thank Deb Glasson for her tireless work as the warden for Kiss and Drive. Deb is an inspiration for those who want to give back to the community.

Lastly, I would also like to take this opportunity to thank you for helping Landsdale continuing to be a great school and wish you a festive holiday season and a happy New Year.

Regards,

Dr Tony Beswick
Principal

Parent Representative Program in 2017

Landsdale Primary School intends to introduce a Parent Representative program in 2017, which will involve one to two volunteer representatives in each class putting together a class parent contact list and sharing information with parents of the class when required.

The aim of the program is to promote a sense of community and cooperation within the classroom through communication, which aims as enhancing the quality of relationships between parents, children & teachers.

This type of program is successfully used in some schools throughout Australia. It was successfully trialled this term in our Year 1 classes, receiving very positive feedback from parents involved.

Please consider whether being a class Parent Representative is something that may interest you next year. The time commitment is small, and you will make great friendships as you help to build on the community spirit of our school.

1-1 Laptop Program – Latest Update

We are excitedly looking forward to welcoming parents and students to the new 2017 program in the second week of term 1 next year. Thank you to parents who have already purchased their new machines, ready to go for the new year. I am sure your children will enjoy learning how to use them over the holidays and we wish you a very happy Christmas and a wonderful time with your families over the holidays.

If you are purchasing laptops over the holidays, the portal will be open and the link is on the website. Depending on when you order the laptop will be delivered either to your home on the holidays or to school if it is close to the beginning of term.

There has been a change in the device offered on the portal, the Macbook Air 11” laptop has been discontinued and the Macbook Air 13” is now the device offered for the 1-1 Program. The portal to purchase the Macbook Air 13” laptop through Winthrop Australia is now open and you can order at any time through this portal. Our school website has the link to the ordering portal.

http://www.landsdaleps.wa.edu.au

While we did love the Macbook Air 11”, the 13” is every bit as good if not better as it is a later model and slightly larger screen. It is still very light and many of our students have chosen this size over the 11” previously and have found it just as portable.

Some Apple resellers may have remaining stock of the MacAir 11” or 13”, and be offering special deals due to it being discontinued, it is worthwhile always to “shop” around for the best deal for you. It does not matter to the school where you purchase the laptop as our partnership with Winthrop is to ensure the best price for the newest device and to have the best service option for parents through them.

On the Ball …. With Mr P

Rising Stars AFL Football Academy

Rising Stars AFL Football Program has been so successful and popular over the last 6 months, delivering the most comprehensive AFL Coaching Program to both boys and girls aged 7 – 15. Rising Stars has a number of programs coming up and I was wondering if you could pass on the information on to the students who are serious about their football and have the discipline and the determination to be the best they can be.

The essence of Rising Stars AFL Football Coaching Academy's philosophy is based on long term development of athletes in their technique, tactics, mental approach (motivation), fitness, game sense (footy smarts), leadership, feedback and satisfaction in learning new skills or enhance existing skills, as well as promoting fun and friendship with a balanced lifestyle.

Rising Stars AFL Football Academy Program is a holistic junior football development program designed to help kids improve their skill level in football and in other parts of their life.

Rising Stars Coach's Goal – The key component is to bring out the “special part of every child’s true talent and to maximise his/her potential as a player”. We provide relevant training and education to assist athletes to learn, improve, challenge, execute and ultimately be recognized. We will provide players with quality coaches and mentors (we will endeavour to invite AFL players down to some sessions) within a high-performance training facility.

Rising Stars AFL Football Academy – Get the Winning Edge

We aim to develop every player by developing their skills such as:

  • Kicking (types of kicks, when to use them, kick to space, off ground and on the run, shots at goal – goal kicking routine)
  • Handball (types – rocket, top spin, bounce, non-preferred, situations
  • Marking (utilising marking technique in contested situations)
  • Ground Balls (picking up, stationary, moving towards, away and sideways)
  • Work Rate (staying in the contest – work ethic, keeping your feet, guarding space)
  • Defensive Skills (tackling, spoiling, shepherding, smothering)
  • Running/Agility (receive, support, defend, create, crumbing, working the mark, bumping)
  • Forward Play (set ups, creating space, leading, defending)
  • Defensive Play (restricting space, zoning off, transition, ball movement from defence)
  • Positional Play or Tactical Development (experience playing all positions feedback)
  • Team Work (decision making, execution, communication, protecting team mates, backing up team mates)
  • Game Style (run and carry, switch, countering situations e.g. loose player in defence)

Please see their website for the upcoming camps (in the Christmas holidays) or their Stage 2, 10 week program in Term 1, 2017 (details of which are on our website).

Music Notes …. From Miss Rogerson

A huge congratulations and thank you to all students who have performed over the past few weeks. Choir students have had a busy couple of weeks performing at the Landsdale Fete, Carols in the Park, and the Year 6 Graduation. I was very impressed with the way students performed professionally, and sang beautifully. Also, well done to the Year 6 Trumpet students who performed Christmas carols at Carols in the Park.

Next year is very exciting for the music program at Landsdale Primary School. The school now owns 30 ukuleles donated by the P&C, which will be used in music classes by all students.

Both the Landsdale Primary School choir and extension choir (called 'Vocal Ensemble' in 2017) will be running next year. These are free programs open to any students who wish to participate, and are willing to commit. The choir is open to students in years 4, 5 and 6. The vocal ensemble is open to year 5 and 6 students. Students who participate in vocal ensemble must also sing in choir. Times of rehearsals for 2017 will be sent home via note early in the term.

A reminder to Year 5 SIM students, you must have your own instrument for 2017 lessons. You can either buy an instrument or rent from music stores around Perth.

Salvation Army Appeal

Thank you to all the families who donated to this year’s Salvation Army Appeal. Your generosity is gratefully received.

Kids Cancer Project – Thank you

Thank you to all the families who donated to the Kids Cancer Project on free dress day last Friday 9th December in memory of Callum Gill. The fantastic amount of $1,010.90 was raised.

P & C President’s Report

As this year ends, I would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who organised, volunteered and supported any P&C event this year. Throughout the year, we have managed to raise over $30,000 and have covered all of the school's wishlist items for 2016 which is amazing, so well done to everyone who played a part.

Our AGM is being held on Tuesday 21st February 2017 at 7pm in the school staff room. All positions will be declared vacant at this meeting so if you would like to put your hand up for a position or you would like to see what the P&C does and the role it plays within the school, please come along. Executive positions available will be President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. Other positions available are Fundraising Coordinator, School Banking Coordinator, Safety House Coordinator and Roadwise Coordinator. All executive positions must be filled in order for the P&C to run effectively.

Wishing you all a merry Christmas and happy New Year and look forward to seeing you all in 2017.

Canteen Reminders

CANTEEN INFORMATION

Manager: Alison Belsteads
Phone: 9302 4582
Opening hours: 8:30am to 1:00pm

At the end of another successful and busy year we can reflect on how lucky we are to have a canteen that is able to operate 5 days a week providing recess and lunch to both the students and teachers of our school. This is mainly due to the wonderful volunteers that have been able to assist us in the canteen throughout the year. We would like to say a huge big THANK YOU to all these parents.

We would like to say a sad farewell to Debbie Glasson who will no longer have children at this school after this year. Debbie has helped us in the canteen over the past 6 years and we have been very grateful for all she has done to help us operate a successful canteen. Thank you Debbie, you will be sadly missed.

Next year will be another adventure and we would love to hear from any parent that may have the time to assist in the canteen in 2017.

From the sale of lunches and recess items the canteen has once again been able to assist the school to purchase a variety of educational equipment. We hope to be able to once again assist the school next year.

We will be sending out our new TERM 1 menu in the first week of 2017.

Merry Christmas.

Why not volunteer to host an international student from France next year? We have a small group of delightful French students coming to Australia for 10 weeks to immerse in local Australian culture, experience our High schools, sports, environment and lifestyle. All the French students are around 15 years old, speak excellent English, have their own spending money, cover all school expenses, and we arrange all aspects of their program. They are looking forward to joining an Australian family for a short term. It’s fun and interesting to help these young people achieve their Australian dream.
