9 February 2017

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Families,

Welcome to 2017.

This year we are full steam ahead in implementing our new business plan. Our focus is creating lessons that engage your children and they strive to meet their learning goals. We have also re-energised ourselves to focus on children’s strengths and helping them to behave well. To do these focus points, we have been working closely with the school board and using teams in the school.

At Landsdale, we like to have the children work in a nice environment and we have created creative spaces to promote learning. You can see the next phase in that we are creating an adventure playground near the courts. Later, in the winter, we will plant some mature trees that will provide greater shade.

We are hoping to keep the ‘kiss and drive’ service this year. But, the P&C needs volunteers. If you can spare 20 minutes at least once a week please contact the school.

We are re-introducing the half-school assemblies this year. The timetable is attached to the newsletter.

Thank you to all the parents/carers who are filing into Kiss and Drive in a safe way. We appreciate how you are looking out for young children during the process of picking up you children.

Parent Information Sessions

Over the next couple of weeks staff will be conducting parent information sessions. These sessions are an opportunity for parents to meet their child’s class teacher/s and find out about the learning journey their children will be taking this year. Staff will cover aspects of classroom organisation, behaviour management, curriculum programs and whole school activities. Every child should have at least one parent attend as vital information about your child’s learning program and your responsibilities as a parent will be discussed. This session is for parents only, children must not attend.

There also will be an opportunity for you to join other parents in the Parent Link Program, an exciting new initiative.

Parents are also reminded to keep an eye out in the school newsletter each fortnight for parenting articles and tips.

We currently have information on the following class/year group sessions:

Wednesday 8th February - 12, LA 26, Kindergarten
Monday 13th February - LA 7, LA 8
Tuesday 14th February - Year One classes and Year 2 LA 9
Thursday 16th February - Year Six classes

A note will also come home from your child’s class teacher confirming the day and time.

Sessions will last no more than an hour, and parents will have an opportunity to ask questions. Please consider your questions carefully and ensure they pertain to whole class or school processes and are not specific to your child. Parents can make an appointment with the class teacher if they have questions of a personal nature.

Working in schools enables a collaborative approach with students, teachers and families; essential for optimal outcomes. The Psychologist onsite in Landsdale is Annabelle Afan. Please contact Natalie Bracegirdle, Deputy Principal, for more information over referrals and how to obtain the free service through the school.

Thank you to all the parents of Year Four students and new senior students who have joined the program this year. Many students have their laptops and are in the process of getting them prepared for the year. Teachers and students are spending the first couple of weeks establishing agreements that will give the grounding for high standards of self-regulation at school and online. Explicitly teaching how to responsibly and appropriately use technology and communication tools provides students with the skills and knowledge to make informed and appropriate choices in the future.

The technical aspects of the program are also being established in the first couple of weeks. This involves bringing the laptops up to a common operating system across the year levels, which meant many laptops needed to be upgraded to the 10.12 OS (Sierra). The laptops are imaged with additional software and settings to ensure that all students have a single sign in at school and across the cluster, which will enable students to seamlessly use their laptops in any school in the cluster.

As the machines are imaged a note is sent home with information regarding setting up passwords and home wireless. The website has information and FAQ’s to assist you. The Cluster of schools share two technicians across the schools and at Landsdale we have a technician onsite every day except Wednesday. Your child is able to let the technician know of any issues with their machine by logging a job on the Helpdesk which you can access through the school website link or by informing their teacher. We are excited to begin the journey with your children to engage in rich 21st Century learning tasks and teach them how to become responsible digital citizens.

What is the Program?

As part of an Ashdale Cluster initiative Landsdale Primary School implemented the Apple One to One program in 2011 and the program is now in the 7th year and runs from Years 4-6 in the Primary Schools and from Years 7-10 in the Secondary College.

This program involves families being given the opportunity to lease or purchase an Apple laptop for their child. In partnership with Winthrop Australia, we have negotiated an offer that we believe is very advantageous to parents in terms of price, warranty and onsite technical servicing if purchased through Winthrop. You are of course free to choose to purchase elsewhere and bring the laptop to school to have it imaged with the settings and software needed for the year. If you have not already ordered your child’s machine the Winthrop Portal is open all year for your orders.

In keeping with Landsdale’s vision of focusing on innovation and creativity to produce students who are engaged and strive to be successful, the program enables students to learn the skills essential to be productive in a technological world, classroom and workplace. They have, at point of need, access to information, applications and global experiences that enable deeper learning at home and at school. STEM and digital technologies skills have been identified as lacking in Australian students, however at Landsdale and the cluster we have a high ratio of students gaining employment or undertaking further studies in STEM fields, largely due to our 1-1 program supported by parents.

The Apple laptops are particularly well suited to the education environment because they are loaded with software and applications that are great for getting students to extend their thinking and create innovative projects. They allow teachers to deliver engaging lessons with more students involved in each learning opportunity. The laptops have excellent options for security and parental control over what their child is accessing and when.

How will the laptops be used?

In coming newsletters, we will highlight examples of how computers will be used to enhance the curriculum and increase student capacity to create with technology.

Today’s example focuses on the important area of writing. Previously, students might be asked to write a persuasive text using a pen and paper. This will continue but with the increasing use of online assessments it is essential to find ways in which the writing experience can be enhanced by using a laptop.

At the simplest level, the task could be enhanced by typing the text into a word processor, adding images and perhaps using the built-in thesaurus to help the student choose more persuasive language.

A further enhancement would be to add hyperlinks, which would allow the reader to obtain further information or jump straight to the student’s references.

Taking the task one step further, the student could upload their writing to the school’s learning management system. There, other students in the class could provide constructive feedback and vote on the topic of the persuasive text.

Using the movie-making software that is built into the laptops, the students might even create a commercial trying to convince other students of their point of view. This could easily be made available to other classes and shown on the interactive whiteboards, providing an authentic audience for the students’ work.

Using the power of the Internet, this audience could even extended to the entire globe!

As you can see, the capacity to extend, motivate and challenge students to think more deeply about and apply their learning to create new opportunities is limitless!

The first Parent Workshop: “Introducing the Mac” Wednesday 22nd February at 4.30pm in LA 16 & 17.

Parent 1-1 Laptop Steering Committee

Parents of students who are participating in the 1-1 laptop program are welcome to become a member of the steering committee. The parents on the steering committee enable the partnership between the school and parents in this program to be strong and collaborative. We listen carefully to the issues that parents raise through their representatives, surveys and general feedback and adapt the program accordingly. Any parents who wish to come along to our meetings are welcome, the first steering committee meeting for 2017 is on Wednesday 1st March, in the school staffroom at 4.30pm.

On the Ball …. With Mr P

Welcome back to 2017 and this year is another busy one for the Physical Education Program. We hope to have a number of interschool events available to Landsdale students this term, including interschool tennis and cricket.

This term, because of our large student population, two Physical Education specialists will run classes on two days. Mr Joshua Brown will be teaching Phys Ed on Tuesdays and Fridays and he and I will teach a similar program.

Please encourage children to wear appropriate footwear and a hat when attending Physical Education lessons. A water bottle at the moment would also be handy.

Students are able to wear their Faction shirts on Fridays, with the exception of year 3 and 4 students who can wear their Faction shirt on Thursday, which is their nominated ‘Sport’ day from 2-3pm. Students can also wear their Faction t-shirt on special sporting events days in which they are competing, such as the Faction Athletics Carnival.

Faction Captain and Vice-Captain Voting

Faction Captain & Vice-Captain voting will take place this Friday, February 10 at approximately 12.10pm.For each faction, there will be a boy and girl captain and a boy and girl vice-captain. Vice-Captains will be taken up by year 5 students, with year 6 students holding the Captain roles. Grevillea will vote in LA 15, Hovea in LA 29, Cassia in LA 14 and Banksia in LA 31.

Welcome back! The start of a new school year is always so exciting.

The library@landsdale is now open for book borrowing. We look forward to seeing our returning students again, as well as meeting new students and parents. The Library is a fun place to visit, as you will quickly discover! The closing date for the return of all books this term will be Friday 31st March, 2017.

Opening Times

The Library is open for book borrowing at these times:

All 32 classes have a weekly “Library Book Change Time” organised by their class teacher. Please check your child’s rostered borrowing day with their class teacher (or check the Library website for the Library Book Change Timetable). It would be great if you could assist your child with remembering their library book and bag on their Library day, at least until they get settled in to their classroom schedule.

Parents/caregivers are most welcome to visit the Library with their child to borrow books before or after school. While here, you may wish to browse through our range of LEAP (Linking Education and Parents) parenting publications which are available for loan. Parents can sign up to become Library members.

Lending Rules

Students may borrow two books for a period of two weeks. Books may be renewed if not required by other readers. Overdue notices are emailed to classrooms every week and distribute to students. Please remind your child to return his/her library books by the due date. Library bags must be used for borrowing. These are available from the Uniform Shop and department stores. Shopping bags are also suitable to use as library bags.

Scholastic Book Club

Order forms for the first issue of Book Club have now been distributed to classes. A copy of “Scholastic Book Club – Information for Parents 2017” can be found on our Library website. Please read this carefully before placing an order with Scholastic. The due date for return of Issue 1 Scholastic orders is FRIDAY 17th FEBRUARY @ 9am. (Late orders cannot be accepted). Please place your completed order in the box in the Front Office or order online through the LOOP Platform (see the Scholastic Book Club page on our website for more information).

Music Notes …. With Miss Rogerson

Welcome back everyone! This is a very exciting year for the music program at Landsdale PS. There are many fun and exciting opportunities your child can participate in outside the music classroom.

Choir

In 2017, both the Landsdale Primary School Choir and Extension Choir (now called Vocal Ensemble) will continue to run. The LPS choir will run at the new time of 1:30-2:00pm Tuesday afternoons in the music room beginning in Week 3 (February 7th). All students Years 4-6 are welcome and encouraged to participate.

Vocal Ensemble will run at the new time of 1:45-2:30pm Wednesday afternoons in the Music Room beginning Week 4 (February 22nd). Vocal Ensemble is a senior-based choir for year 5 and 6 students showing exceptional enthusiasm and skills in music. Students are invited to participate in the choir, and are chosen based on behaviour, attitude, and reliability shown throughout 2016 in both choir and/or music class. Students invited to participate in Vocal Ensemble will also be required to attend all LPS Choir rehearsals.

One Big Voice Performance at Perth Arena

This year, Landsdale PS has been given the exciting opportunity to perform in the annual One Big Voice Performance at the Perth Arena on August 18th. This is a non-competitive massed choir involving thousands of students from across WA. Both choirs will work towards this event throughout terms 1, 2 and 3, along with performing at our usual annual events. This term choirs will also be working towards the annual ANZAC Day ceremony scheduled for Thursday, April 6th. Due to the choirs’ participation in this event, students will not be permitted to join or leave the choirs until after the performance (August 18th). Student numbers will be finalised in Week 3 of Term 1. For this reason, please consider your child’s involvement carefully, so discuss with them the commitment involved.

If your child would like to participate in either choir this year, please ask them to attend the next upcoming choir meeting on Wednesday, 8th February at 1:45pm in the Music Room.

School Parking

Please see the attached booklet on school parking.

Kiss n’ Drive and Parking

As with the majority of schools, traffic is usually pretty bad at the beginning of the year around the school.

If you are dropping off or picking up your child, please ensure you use our Kiss n’ Drive area at the front of the school. By cars filing through in turn using this (in the correct manner), it ensures the safety of all students and pedestrians.

If you plan on parking and going into the school, please only use the bays provided. This does not include the bays at the front of the school for Kiss n’ Drive.

Do not park in or across other people’s driveways or property. This is illegal and you will be fined if caught. The Council are cracking down on illegal parking around schools. If you do have permission to park in someone else’s driveway, your car must be parked after their letterbox as property before the letterbox is council property and again, this will incur a fine.

More information will be sent home in the coming days regarding Kiss n’ Drive but please in the meantime, use common sense and obey the law.

School Banking at Landsdale Primary School!

Get involved in the School Banking program.

Landsdale Primary School is excited to offer the Commonwealth Bank School Banking program to all students.

School Banking is a fun, interactive and engaging way for young Australians to learn about money and develop good savings habits. Children who deposit money into their Youthsaver account through School Banking earn Dollarmites tokens, which they can save up and redeem for exciting rewards.

The rewards available during 2017 are:

  • Cyber Handball
  • Colour Change Markers
  • 3D Chalk set
  • Tablet Case
  • Smiley Emoji Keyring
  • Volt Handball
  • Pencil + Tech Case
  • Epic Earphones

School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school. Our school receives $5 when a student makes their first ever School Banking deposit and 5% on every deposit made through the school (to a maximum of $10 per individual deposit).

Getting involved in School Banking is easy!

All you need to get involved in the School Banking program is a Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account. You can open an account for your child in one of two ways:

1. Online

Visit the link below and click on the link to open a Youthsaver account.

https://www.commbank.com.au/personal/kids/school-banking.html

2. In branch

Visit a Commonwealth Bank branch with identification for yourself and your child, like a driver’s licence and birth certificate.

If your child has an existing Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account they can start banking straight away. They just need to bring their deposit in every week on School Banking day using their Dollarmites deposit wallet.

School Banking day is every Thursday morning from 8-9am. Each week, just bring your money and deposit book to the Junior Primary Block where LA11 and LA12 are located.

If you would like to know more about School Banking, please ask for a 2017 School Banking program information pack from the school office or visit the link below
