23 February 2017
From the Principal
Dear Parents and Families,
The new timetable is working well because we can structure English and maths lessons across year levels. For example, we have two spelling programs in our school. The first is based on the step-by-step approach of the Diana Rigg spelling program in kindergarten to year 4. The second is Words Their Way in years 5 and 6. Teachers use both these highly structured programs as a base, yet personalise learning of spelling for your child.
To help with spelling, your child’s teacher will be sending home words that are currently being taught in the classroom.
Thanks to the parents who are on the 1-1 laptop steering committee as this group has a significant say in how the school uses laptops.
Regards,
Dr Tony Beswick

OnPsych Psychology Services
Landsdale collaborates with an external Psychology group called OnPsych. OnPsych is Australia’s largest provider of bulk-billed Medicare funded school-based psychology services. OnPsych specialise in child and adolescent mental health interventions and family intervention dealing with a range of disorders such as anxiety, depression, ASD, ADHD, grief, and self-harm. Working in schools enables a collaborative approach with students, teachers and families; essential for optimal outcomes. The Psychologist onsite in Landsdale is Annabelle Afan. Please contact Natalie Bracegirdle, Deputy Principal, for more information about referrals and how to obtain the free service through the school.
The 1-1 Laptop Program
The 1-1 program at Landsdale has always been well supported by parents, we thank you for your commitment to improving your child’s educational opportunities. Most students have their laptops and are in the process of learning how to use it effectively in class. They have been establishing agreements that will give the grounding for high standards of self-regulation at school and online. They are also learning how to responsibly and appropriately use technology and communication tools, this provides students with the skills and knowledge to make informed and appropriate choices in the future.
If you are still thinking about purchasing a laptop for your child the purchasing portal is open all year. If you need more information regarding this please call the school.
https://portal.winaust.com.au/forms/view/623
The school website has information and FAQ’s to assist you. The Cluster of schools share two technicians across the schools and at Landsdale we have a technician onsite every day except Wednesday. Your child is able to let the technician know of any issues with their machine by logging a job on the Helpdesk which you can access through the school website link or by informing their teacher.
In keeping with Landsdale’s vision of focusing on innovation and creativity to produce students who are engaged and strive to be successful, the program enables students to learn the skills essential to be productive in a technological world, classroom and workplace. They have, at point of need, access to information, applications and global experiences that enable deeper learning at home and at school. STEM and digital technologies skills have been identified as lacking in Australian students, however at Landsdale and the cluster we have a high ratio of students gaining employment or undertaking further studies in STEM fields, largely due to our 1-1 program supported by parents.
The Apple laptops are particularly well suited to the education environment because they are loaded with software and applications that are great for getting students to extend their thinking and create innovative projects. They allow teachers to deliver engaging lessons with more students involved in each learning opportunity. The laptops have excellent options for security and parental control over what their child is accessing and when.
Parent 1-1 Laptop Steering Committee
Parents of students who are participating in the 1-1 laptop program are welcome to become a member of the steering committee. The parents on the steering committee enable the partnership between the school and parents in this program to be strong and collaborative. We listen carefully to the issues that parents raise through their representatives, surveys and general feedback and adapt the program accordingly. Any parents who wish to come along to our meetings are welcome, the first steering committee meeting for 2017 is on Wednesday 1st March, in the school staffroom at 4.30pm.
For more information on the Landsdale 1-1 program contact Leanne White Ph: 93024100, Leanne.White@education.wa.edu.au

Thank you to those parents who have paid their child’s contribution and charges for 2017. Monies collected from your contributions and charges enhance the learning program by the purchase of additional resources.
The In School Activities component is a compulsory charge and must be paid for your child/children to participate in planned incursions. We would appreciate payment of the In School Activity fee as soon as possible.
For your convenience, we accept Visacard and Mastercard (over the phone) and all EFTPOS transactions over the counter, along with cash and cheque. We also accept Direct Debit. The details are: BSB 066-132 Account 10249789 (Student’s Full Name must be included in the Reference).

Library News

Library Book Borrowing Competition
Every time your child remembers to bring their library bag and book for their class library borrowing session, they earn a point for their class as soon as they borrow their next book. The results are tallied and, at the end of the term, the winning class receives a prize of a $40 Scholastic Book Club Voucher. The students in that class get to choose the items they wish to spend their $40 prize on and then share the books in their classroom. Please encourage your child to pack their library book and bag each week so they can develop the habit of independent book borrowing. Parents and students are also welcome to borrow from the library before and after school.
Opening Times
The Library is open for book borrowing at these times:
- Before school - 8.30-8.45am - Mon-Fri
- Lunchtime - 1.15-1.45pm - Mon, Tues, Thur, Fri (Closed Wed)
- After school - 3.00-3.30pm - Mon-Fri
Scholastic Book Club
Issue 1 of Scholastic Book Club has now closed. Ordered items will be distributed to classrooms as soon as they arrive.
Music Notes …. With Miss Rogerson
Changes to Choir
In 2017, both the Landsdale Primary School Choir and Extension Choir (now called Vocal Ensemble) will continue to run. Both choir times have slightly changed since the beginning of the year due to clashes with other school programs.
The LPS choir will run at the new time of 1:15-2:00pm Tuesday afternoons in the Music Room. All students in years 4-6 are welcome and encouraged to participate.
Vocal Ensemble will run at the new time of 1:15-2:00pm Monday afternoons in the Music Room beginning week 4 (February 22nd). Vocal Ensemble is a senior-based choir for year 5 and 6 students showing exceptional enthusiasm and skills in music. Due to the large number of students wishing to participate in choir this year, students in Vocal Ensemble will not need to attend LPS choir rehearsals as well.
One Big Voice Performance at Perth Arena
This year, Landsdale Primary School has been given the exciting opportunity to perform in the annual One Big Voice Performance at the Perth Arena on 18th August. This is a non-competitive massed choir involving thousands of students from across WA. Both choirs will work towards this event throughout terms 1, 2 and 3, along with performing at our usual annual events. This term choirs will also be working towards the annual ANZAC Day Ceremony scheduled for Thursday, April 6th. Due to the choirs’ participation in this event, students will not be permitted to join or leave the choirs until after the performance (18th August). Student numbers will be finalised in Week 3 of Term 1. For this reason, please consider your child’s involvement carefully, and discuss with them the commitment involved. There is still time for your child to join the choir if they would like to participate.
For more information, please see the link below.
http://www.onebigvoice.com.au/
All choir students wishing to participate in the Once Big Voice Performance must return the attached form to the office as soon as possible, and attend the next upcoming rehearsal.
SIM Classes
All SIM classes have officially begun, starting in Week 2. Please see the timetable attached for when and where lessons are taking place.

P&C – Fundraising News – Entertainment Books 2017
Entertainment Books 2017 – Looking for Corporate Partners
Planning is underway for the Entertainment Book fundraising for 2017. One great way to fund raise is to get corporations and businesses involved.
Do you work for or know a corporation that might like to support Landsdale Primary School?
They can help support Landsdale Primary School by purchasing the 2017|2018 Entertainment Edition for their staff or clients with $14 from every book going directly to our fundraising
Included:
- 2017|2018 EntertainmentTM Membership (Book or Digital Edition)
- Branding on the book with their corporate logo
- Delivery on volume orders
- Optional gift wrapping
- Expiring June 1 2018, their gift will not only provide a year of incredible experiences and savings for their staff or clients, $14 from each membership will support Landsdale Primary School.
Past corporations that have got involved for other community groups include real estate agents that buy the books and then give them away to clients who buy into the area as a 'welcome to this suburb' package. What a great idea!!!!
So please contact someone you know on the P&C or me Aberline on 0403 129438, aberline.attwood@dpaw.wa.gov.au if you know of any corporates that might like to support our school (and get their logo on the front cover of the books they giveaway!).
See the attached for more information.
School Parking
attachments/Kiss%20and%20Drive.pdf
Please see the attached booklet on school parking.
Kiss n’ Drive and Parking
As with the majority of schools, traffic is usually pretty bad at the beginning of the year around the school.
If you are dropping off or picking up your child, please ensure you use our Kiss n’ Drive area at the front of the school. By cars filing through in turn using this (in the correct manner), it ensures the safety of all students and pedestrians.
If you plan on parking and going into the school, please only use the bays provided. This does not include the bays at the front of the school for Kiss n’ Drive.
Do not park in or across other people’s driveways or property. This is illegal and you will be fined if caught. The Council are cracking down on illegal parking around schools. If you do have permission to park in someone else’s driveway, your car must be parked after their letterbox as property before the letterbox is council property and again, this will incur a fine.
Please use common sense and obey the law.
School Banking at Landsdale Primary School!
Get involved in the School Banking program.
Landsdale Primary School is excited to offer the Commonwealth Bank School Banking program to all students.
School Banking is a fun, interactive and engaging way for young Australians to learn about money and develop good savings habits. Children who deposit money into their Youthsaver account through School Banking earn Dollarmites tokens, which they can save up and redeem for exciting rewards.
The rewards available during 2017 are:
- Cyber Handball
- Colour Change Markers
- 3D Chalk Set
- Tablet Case
- Smiley Emoji Keyring
- Volt Handball
- Pencil + Tech Case
- Epic Earphones
School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school. Our school receives $5 when a student makes their first ever School Banking deposit and 5% on every deposit made through the school (to a maximum of $10 per individual deposit).
Getting involved in School Banking is easy!
All you need to get involved in the School Banking program is a Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account. You can open an account for your child in one of two ways:
1 – Online
Visit the link below and click on the link to open a Youthsaver
account.
http://www.commbank.com.au/schoolbanking
2 - In branch
Visit a Commonwealth Bank branch with identification for yourself and your
child, like a driver’s licence and birth certificate.
If your child has an existing Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account they can start banking straight away. They just need to bring their deposit in every week on School Banking day using their Dollarmites deposit wallet.
School Banking day is every Thursday morning from 8-9am. Each week, just bring your money and deposit book to the wet area where LA11 and LA12 are located.
If you would like to know more about School Banking, please ask for a 2017 School Banking program information pack from the school office or visit the link below.
