From the Principal
Dear Parents and Families,
The school has begun a number of programs to help students this year. One of those is Seven Steps to Writing Success. This program is used by some schools across Australia with strong results. The program gives teachers and explicit framework for breaking down the writing process into manageable steps. As a result, students build their writing skills and celebrate small successes that excite and engage them. Ms Kristy Parkinson has been trained in using the program and is helping others implement it in their classrooms.
The school board is implementing a Helping Hands program across the school. The board chair, Ms Keera Bull, is heading the program. Helping Hands is designed to help our students understand that there are people in need that will benefit from understanding their perspective. To fund this charity work, the funds raised from some of the free dress will go to the Helping Hands nominated beneficiaries, which will be advertised in this newsletter. Please support this good cause.
Regards,
Dr Tony Beswick

Landsdale Primary School Board
The School Board is made up of parents, staff and community members who assist the Principal in achieving the direction of the school. The school Board is involved in assisting the school to establish general policy, objectives and priorities and planning financial arrangements to fund them. We look at the schools performance in achieving those objectives and priorities. Our responsibility is to formulate with the school administration a code of conduct of students and charges and contributions.
Your current representatives on the Landsdale school board are myself, Deborah Yates, Kahli Bourke, Rohan Osment, Aberline Attwood, Margaret Quirk MLA, Kendra McDonald, Tony Beswick, Leanne White, Mimma Della Gatta and Tracey Higgins.
School board members are happy to help you with any questions as representatives on the school board; however, it is important to note that the school board is not involved in the operations or day to day running of the school. Any matters relating to this should be directed to your teacher, deputy principals or principal.
Thanks.
Keera Bull
Board Chair
Helping Hands Project
The School Board is running a project called Helping Hands to help people in the community. Together with the student councillors, the board will be holding a free dress day in week 9 or 10 of every term to raise money for a charity or community venture. As a community we have been touched in many difference ways and we would like community members to nominate worthy charities they may feel could benefit from our Helping Hands Project. Suggestions should be emailed to Tania.Burke@education.wa.edu.au.
The purpose of this Project is to create a gratitude practice and to raise funds for charities while developing community awareness, understanding and acceptance.

Special Needs Connect Group – Friday 5th May at 9.00-9.30am in the LPS Staffroom
As we all know raising children is challenging; however for some, our journey is different to others. I would like to arrange a regular opportunity for Landsdale parents who have children who have special needs, challenging behaviour or learning difficulties to meet and network with one another. This will provide us with the opportunity to talk with likeminded people who may be able to offer support, suggestions and share ideas. I am proposing a coffee catch up in week 2 and 8 of each term in the staffroom at Landsdale Primary School. To allow as many parents to attend as possible we can alternate days and times. Initially, I would appreciate an indication of parents who may be interested in participating in this group to ascertain if it is viable. Please email me on dkbull@iinet.net.au if you are interested. Please note children do not need a formal diagnosis for you to come along.
1-1 Laptop Program Update
Thank you to parents who are supporting our 1-1 Laptop program.
Students from Year Four – Six are:
- investigating and researching history topics through the History Mystery site where they are delving into our colonial history and the issues and ramifications then and how it impacts today. They are able to extend their learning through focused investigations using Mindnode for brainstorming, sharing ideas and organising information effectively.
- using a green screen to make exciting news reports and presenting work on their own websites, a great way to prepare them for online portfolios for employers. Parents can access these websites and see their progress.
- accessing different maths challenges, starting at their own level of understanding and working together to increase their skill and understanding of problem solving strategies through shared online artifacts.
- Creating “Voki’s” to make their writing come to life! (animations with student voice)
Visit your child’s class and personal website to see how they are progressing.
The laptops are also assisting our students to be good digital citizens, the teachers are constantly teaching them the skills and understandings to achieve a positive digital footprint. We need to work together with parents to do this, please check our website for information and resources to help you.

Student Update Forms 2017
Student Information Update forms have already been sent home. If you have not already done so, please check all details and return forms to the office for processing. It is extremely important that we have correct contact details on file.
On the Ball …. With Mr P
Just a reminder, that students are able to wear their faction shirts on Fridays, with the exception of year 3 and 4 students who can wear their faction shirt on Thursday, which is their nominated ‘Sport’ day from 2-3pm. Students can also wear their faction t-shirt on special sporting events days in which they are competing, such as the Faction Athletics Carnival.
Interschool Tennis
Congratulations to both the Landsdale girls and boys teams who competed in the ‘Academy Plate’ primary schools tennis championship last Monday and Tuesday respectively.
Our teams faired quite well, beating a couple of opponents and it was noted from other teams that their court etiquette, scoring and general tennis knowledge was good. I must commend the students on their sportsmanship also.
Thanks to Jason and the team at Tennis West for running a terrific tournament, Mrs Melissa George for helping take some of the boys on Tuesday and John Fairchild for helping coach the students in the lead up to the event.

Interschool Cricket
Landsdale also represented the school in the Milo T20 Big Bash at Kingsway Sporting Complex on Friday, March 10. The school fielded 7 teams, 3 boys and 4 girls, comprising 56 students in total! All students applied themselves very well and are to be commended on the way they conducted themselves throughout the day.
Their behaviour was exemplary and it was very pleasing to see the way in which they played their games. All students were actively involved in all the matches throughout the day - it’s a terrific concept from Cricket Australia. It was pleasing to see the number of students nominate for the event, so most of our sessions were try-out rather than training so hopefully we might be able to train in a few more sessions next year!
Thanks Mr Brown for giving up his Friday lunch times to help with the boy’s try-outs and for his and Mrs Checksfield’s assistance and enthusiasm on the day. It is much appreciated!

Get ready….he’s coming…

WA Young Readers’ Book Award
It’s WAYRBA time again! The WA Young Readers’ Book Award is an annual event that encourages children to read and vote on a range of short-listed books by top authors and illustrators. The Library now has a display of these books, on the slatwall area. Children can borrow the WAYRBA books and vote on them by filling out the voting slip inside the book cover.
From now until the end of September, we are offering an incentive for students to participate in this event. Every time they read and vote on one of the Award books, their name goes into the draw to win a Scholastic Book Club voucher to the value of $25. The prize will be drawn when voting closes at the end of September. Please return completed voting slips to Mrs Murray in the Library, so the votes can be recorded and entered into the draw. Chaplain’s Chat
I have had a lovely few days getting to know your wonderful school and feel so welcomed, thank you.
It’s Harmony Week this week and what a great week to practice being friendly and kind, where we get to live out the I-Value of working well with others no matter culture, language, faith or age. All the different cultures, languages and countries we come from make our world the world we know here.
Well done Landsdale Primary School, it’s so lovely to walk around your school and see that everyone is being kind, accepting and friendly to one another – working well with others – remember to be kind, accepting and friendly to yourself as well.
There are some wonderful courses run by Relationship Australia – they are advertised on the window of my office opposite the library/staffroom or you can find more information on the link below. There are many courses including Mums raising boys, Dads raising teenage girls and Successful single parenting.

Chaplaincy Program Opt-Out
Dear Parents,
At Landsdale Primary School we follow a philosophy of providing pastoral care for our students as part of our aim in achieving academic excellence. Working with our Student Services Team, chaplaincy is an important part of our strategy. Our School Chaplaincy Service is funded by the School.
The pastoral care provided has a broad scope and includes, for example, one on one, and programmed group sessions.
YouthCARE Chaplaincy is an ‘Opt-Out’ program, and thus if we do not hear from you and receive the completed Opt-Out form attached below, the assumption is that you give permission for your child to access chaplaincy services if needed.

School Banking at Landsdale Primary School!
Get involved in the School Banking program.
Landsdale Primary School is excited to offer the Commonwealth Bank School Banking program to all students.
School Banking is a fun, interactive and engaging way for young Australians to learn about money and develop good savings habits. Children who deposit money into their Youthsaver account through School Banking earn Dollarmites tokens, which they can save up and redeem for exciting rewards.
The rewards available during 2017 are:
- Cyber Handball
- Colour Change Markers
- 3D Chalk Set
- Tablet Case
- Smiley Emoji Keyring
- Volt Handball
- Pencil + Tech Case
- Epic Earphones
School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school. Our school receives $5 when a student makes their first ever School Banking deposit and 5% on every deposit made through the school (to a maximum of $10 per individual deposit).
Getting involved in School Banking is easy!
All you need to get involved in the School Banking program is a Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account. You can open an account for your child in one of two ways:
- Online
Visit www.commbank.com.au/schoolbanking and click on the link to open a Youthsaver account. - In branch
Visit a Commonwealth Bank branch with identification for yourself and your child, like a driver’s licence and birth certificate.
If your child has an existing Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account they can start banking straight away. They just need to bring their deposit in every week on School Banking day using their Dollarmites deposit wallet.
School Banking day is every Thursday morning from 8-9am. Each week, just bring your money and deposit book to the Junior Primary Block where LA11 and LA12 are located.
If you would like to know more about School Banking, please ask for a 2017 School Banking program information pack from the school office or visit the link below.
