4 May 2017

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Families,

Welcome back to Term 2. I hope all families enjoyed a relaxing Easter and holiday break. Dr Beswick is still on leave, he will be returning in Week 4.

Over the holiday break our nature playground was almost completed. We are waiting on a few final touch ups, and then the playground will be opened for students. It was designed with the senior students’ needs in mind, after some informal consultation around what they would like. We have tried incorporating more challenging components such as rope nets to access the forts, rope bridges, a pod swing, as well as quiet areas to contemplate. They also wanted a double slide for racing! We are hoping to open the playground to students on Friday 5th May.

At the end of last term we held our school ANZAC ceremony. Thank you to everyone in the community who joined our students to remember the ANZAC spirit. A special mention to Miss Emma Rogerson, our music specialist, who arranged a respectful and relevant service, to commemorate the occasion.

Also at the end of last term, our P and C hosted an evening with Maggie Dent at the Ashdale Secondary College theatre. Maggie is a well known parenting and children’s advocate, who is passionate about child development and grass roots parenting. The event was sold out, with 220 tickets sold. A special thanks to Mel Knight for organising the event.

We have some exciting new learning programs beginning this term, including our Huff and Puff program. The program stimulates the brain and body so that children are ready to learn through activities that involve heavy breathing (puff) and focussed breathing for concentration (huff). Selected students will have the opportunity to trial the program in small groups this term.

I would like to ask parents if they could please not drop off, pick up or walk/ride students through the staff carpark. There are constantly cars moving in and out of the area which makes it a very dangerous place for students to be.

Finally, the school will be participating in NAPLAN assessments this term. I would ask parents to remember that this is a snapshot of learning taken on one day, and not to place more importance on the testing than is necessary. If your child is participating in NAPLAN this year, I would encourage parents to read the NAPLAN article that has been placed in the LEAP section of this newsletter for helpful tips.

Wishing families all the best for Term 2.

Cass Disisto
Acting Principal

Kindergarten Enrolments for 2018

Kindy enrolments for Landsdale residents are now open for children born 1/7/2013 to 30/6/2014. The application period closes on Friday 28th July, 2017.

Application forms are available from our website or from the front office. Please note that the child’s birth certificate, immunisation schedule and “proof of address” (eg. electricity bill, rates notice, etc) need to be submitted at this time.

For our existing Kindy students going into Pre-primary 2018 no action needs to be taken – you will be contacted later in the year regarding a position.

If you have any questions regarding enrolment at Landsdale Primary, please contact the ladies in the front office.

Connect Group – Friday 5th May at 9.00-9.30am in the LPS Staffroom

As we all know raising children is challenging; however for some, our journey is different to others. I would like to arrange a regular opportunity for Landsdale parents, who have children with special needs, challenging behaviour or learning difficulties, to meet and network with one another. This will provide us with the opportunity to talk with likeminded people who may be able to offer support, suggestions and share ideas. I am proposing a coffee catch up in Week 2 and 8 of each term in the staffroom at Landsdale Primary School. To allow as many parents to attend as possible we can alternate days and times. Initially, I would appreciate an indication from parents who may be interested in participating in this group to ascertain if it is viable. Please email me on dkbull@iinet.net.au if you are interested. Please note children do not need a formal diagnosis for you to come along.

Chaplain’s Chat

We are two weeks into Term 2, I hope all had a good holiday.

This term I will continue to get to know students and staff and will be looking to connect in with a couple of classes where I will be reading life skill stories where we look at creating happy habits within our lives and students get to complete an activity after.

I’ll be available for one on one contact time with students, parents and teachers to help with any issues that they are finding themselves facing. As a school Chaplain, my role is to be a shoulder to lean on and an ear to listen, I assist with friendship skills, self-esteem, I encourage students to work well together and other life skills.

If there is a situation that has a greater need of counselling or the need of another action plan I follow up with my line-manager and we take steps with the family that will help the student in the best possible way.

Relationships Australia is a great means of getting extra assistance with parenting, relationships etc.

Their website is at the link below or contact information 9489 6322

https://relationshipswa.org.au/

We do have other resources and referrals available, if you’d like to know more please don’t hesitate to call and have a chat.

With NAPLAN being on this term, I found this quote quite fitting and hope that all students, staff and parents try to navigate the following weeks well, enjoying the learning, growing and stretching these tests bring.

"The right angle for approaching any problem is the 'try'angle." -

I hope you have a wonderful fortnight.

School Banking at Landsdale Primary School!

Get involved in the School Banking program.

Landsdale Primary School is excited to offer the Commonwealth Bank School Banking program to all students.

School Banking is a fun, interactive and engaging way for young Australians to learn about money and develop good savings habits. Children who deposit money into their Youthsaver account through School Banking earn Dollarmites tokens, which they can save up and redeem for exciting rewards.

The rewards available during 2017 are:

  • Cyber Handball
  • Colour Change Markers
  • 3D Chalk Set
  • Tablet Case
  • Smiley Emoji Keyring
  • Volt Handball
  • Pencil + Tech Case
  • Epic Earphones

School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school. Our school receives $5 when a student makes their first ever School Banking deposit and 5% on every deposit made through the school (to a maximum of $10 per individual deposit).

Getting involved in School Banking is easy!

All you need to get involved in the School Banking program is a Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account. You can open an account for your child in one of two ways:

  1. Online
Visit commbank.com.au/schoolbanking and click on the link to open a Youthsaver account.
  2. In branch
Visit a Commonwealth Bank branch with identification for yourself and your child, like a driver’s licence and birth certificate.

If your child has an existing Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account they can start banking straight away. They just need to bring their deposit in every week on School Banking day using their Dollarmites deposit wallet.

School Banking day is every Thursday morning from 8-9am. Each week, just bring your money and deposit book to the Junior Primary Block where LA11 and LA12 are located.

If you would like to know more about School Banking, please ask for a 2017 School Banking program information pack from the school office or visit commbank.com.au/schoolbanking.
