1 June 2017

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Families,

The school board has decided to continue our one to one device program. This was because of the success of the program shown by responses from students and teachers. While the preferred option is the Year 4-6 students to use a MacBook, parents can opt to purchase a version 6 iPad or an iPad Pro in 2018.

We have recently completed a countering bullying survey which asked the Year 3-6 students what they observed about bullying. We do know that there is a relatively low level of bullying within our school; however, we wanted your children's perspective. The staff will analyse the trends and create strategies to address issues. The school board will then consider the data and help the school further define our approach.

Dr Tony Beswick
Principal

ICAS Mathematics Testing

The International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) is an independent, skills-based assessment program which recognises and rewards student achievement.

Landsdale Primary School students are able to nominate to complete the Mathematics test which includes mathematical skills in a range of contexts across Algebra and Patterns, Chance and Data, Measures and Units, Number and Arithmetic, and Space and Geometry.

Testing occurs on Tuesday August 15th 2017. All nominations must be notified to the school by Monday June 19th. The cost for each student, payable with nomination, is $9.90 per student.

An individual report evaluating student performance, and a certificate, is provided for each student participating in ICAS.

Each student's report shows:

  • the student’s answer to each question as well as the correct answer
  • the performance of each student in the different skill areas assessed
  • the progress of each student every year over the past eight years
  • the student's comparative performance against the reporting region.

Please contact Leonie Mattock to nominate your child for the ICAS Mathematics testing, or for any further information or queries.

Kindergarten Enrolments for 2018

Kindy enrolments for Landsdale residents are now open for children born 1/7/2013 to 30/6/2014. The application period closes on Friday 28th July, 2017.

Application forms are available from our website or from the front office. Please note that your child’s birth certificate, immunisation schedule and “proof of address” (eg. electricity bill, rates notice, etc) need to be submitted at this time.

For our existing Kindy students going into Pre-primary 2018 no action needs to be taken – you will be contacted later in the year regarding placement.

If you have any questions regarding enrolment at Landsdale Primary, please contact the ladies in the front office.

One to One Laptop Program

In 2017 our parent funded laptop program is exclusively MacBook Air laptops. We know that this device is by far the most effective and powerful tool for learning our students can have. The school and Cluster ICT committees research and review our choice of device each year with a focus on student learning and our partnership with parents. While we know that the MacBook is the superior device, the price rises and the economic changes make the cost of the device a potential issue for parents.

For 2018 the committees have taken this issue into account and have recommended that we add a less costly device to our 1-1 Program. We have taken this recommendation to our school board and they have approved the addition. In 2018 our recommended device is still the MacBook Air, however we will be offering the option of an iPad or iPad Pro.

All of our staff and students surveyed regarding which device was better for learning, considered the MacBook Air laptop the best device for the program. Staff were asked if only one device was offered which would they recommend, all chose the MacBook Air laptop. Staff were however accepting of introducing an iPad as an option, but felt they would need professional development in the use of dual devices.

The school has begun providing coaching and sharing opportunities to staff to prepare them for the addition to the program. We will also continue working with your children, especially in Year 3, to upskill them in the use of both devices.

Landsdale has been recognised for our excellent programs embedding technology and our parents’ support is a key to this. We look forward to your continued support in 2018.

Connect Group – Friday 16th June in the LPS Staffroom

The Landsdale parent connect group is for families of children with special needs, challenging behaviour, learning or emotional difficulties (or any other concerns), to meet and network with one another. This provides the opportunity to talk with likeminded people who may be able to offer support, suggestions and share ideas.

The next catch up will be on Friday 16th June at 2:15pm in the staffroom. We have invited Catherine Simpson from Edith Cowan University's speech therapy department to join us. She is happy to answer any questions of a general nature.

Please come along and join us for this coffee catch up. There is no commitment. Your child does not require a formal diagnosis and it may be that you are concerned and would like to chat. We will also be joined by a deputy principal for part of the session to answer any questions you may have.

Please email me on dkbull@iinet.net.au if you have any queries.

Thanks
Keera Bull

Helping Hands Project

Helping Hands is a program designed to help our students understand that there are people in need who will benefit from understanding their perspective.

Together with the student councillors, the board will be holding a free dress day every term to raise money for a charity or community venture.

The first Helping Hands free dress day will be Tuesday 27th June for a gold coin donation.

We would like community members to nominate charities or community ventures they may feel could benefit from our Helping Hands Project. The support program will be randomly selected from the suggestions received. Suggestions should be emailed to Tania.Burke@education.wa.edu.au.

The purpose of this project is to create a gratitude practice and to raise funds for charities while developing community awareness, understanding and acceptance.

Student Achievement

School Fun Run

The school fun run will be on again this year, to be held on Thursday 8th June from 2pm. I will run the course a little differently this year by starting the track on the top oval, weaving and winding around the bottom oval and completing a ‘circuit’ back up to the top oval. Students are encouraged to run this circuit as many times as they can.

Winter Sports Carnival

This term, students in years 5 & 6 have been practising and competing in a number of Winter Sports on Friday afternoons. The culmination of all this training will end with a Lightning Carnival to be held at Kingsway Sporting Complex on Friday, 16th June.

The reserve date for this event is Tuesday, 20th June.

Runners Club

Runners Club has again returned this year, so if you are interested in running, jogging, walking or strolling some laps, meet at the bottom oval at 8.15am on Friday mornings. Everybody has the chance to receive a bronze, silver and gold certificate pending how many laps they achieve. Students, parents and teachers are all most welcome to come down and join in the fun!

Legends of Landsdale

Our school cross-country, the Legends of Landsdale, will take place on Friday, 23rd June. It will commence from 11.05am starting with the year 1’s followed by the year 2’s running approximately 600m. The year 3’s will commence at 12 noon followed by the year 4’s. Year 5’s will commence their race at 1.45pm followed by the year 6’s.The distance for the year 3-6 events is approximately 1500m. I encourage all students to participate.

Again, we will participate in a local cross-country event, this time at Kingsway Sporting Complex. We will be fielding the top 4 boy and girl students from years 1/2 (juniors) who run 600m, 3/4 (intermediate) who run 1300m and 5/6 (seniors) who run 2000m. As in previous years, selections will be based on the times recorded from our Legends of Landsdale event, so for example, there may be three year two students and one year 1 student representing the school in the junior division. This is in line with how the other schools nominate their competitors. This event will take place on Friday 4th August.

Parents can independently nominate their children in the annual School Sport WA cross-country interschool event, please visit the link below for more information.

Chaplain’s Chat

We’re past half way through the term with a lovely long weekend ahead of us!

I have a great opportunity to go to a wonderful conference tomorrow called “Generation Next, The Mental Health & Wellbeing of Young People”. Considering the conference and all the topics to be explored, I was reminded of a great session on Cybersafety we had at the last one I attended.

Susan McLean is a well-known speaker and writer on Cybersafety – her website is below

http://www.cybersafetysolutions.com.au/

I know that a lot of our students at a primary school age won’t be accessing a lot of the apps, programs and social media currently, however many have siblings that are, some are and they will all be in the future.

Susan shares from her website - “Parents must learn about the internet with their child. Kids today have access to and are accessible by many millions of people worldwide via the vast array of websites, applications and online-games. The unprecedented amount of personal information available on these sites makes them a perfect place for people who would happily identify their victims and gain their trust.

Other identified dangers include exposure to inappropriate content, cyber bullying and harassment, exchange of inappropriate images and identity theft. Teens are often not aware that their words and/or photos, which may have been intended for a small audience, sometimes find their way to a larger one, often with both unexpected and undesirable consequences.

Today’s parents grew up in a world devoid of these technologies. They often have little knowledge on how best to assist and guide their children and when interest or concern is shown, suspicious kids ‘fob’ them off with the typical responses of ‘You won’t understand.....’ ‘Go away its private......’or ‘You have no idea.....’

Don’t be afraid of technology. Learn about it and embrace it as your children do.

Accept that they will access content that might upset them, often not because they went looking for it, and make sure that they are comfortable coming to you when this happens. Spend time online with them - Cyberspace can be a lot of fun.”

Most of the apps that we were made aware of have age restrictions on them for +13, however they are finding more and more children on ipods are going to mum or dad and asking for these apps, saying that their friends are on them and it’s a free way for them to chat together, with most parents hearing that’s it free, telling their children it’s all good and signing them up.

Please consider researching what it is that your child is asking to connect to.

For example –

Snapchat (age restriction 13+) is a photo messaging app which allows users to take photos, record videos, add text and drawing and send them to a controlled list of recipients. These photographs and videos are known as “Snaps”. Users set a time limit for how long recipients can view their Snaps and this can be from 1 – 10 seconds. After this time they will be hidden from the user’s screen, but are totally retrievable if required. The receiving person can also take screen shots of the snapchat and there is no control from the sender as to what happens with this photo. Snapchat is used to send fun harmless photos and chats, however can far too easily be used for scenarios that can cause serious problems for those involved.

Remember a simple Google search, and then sharing what you find with your child, can give you an insight into the social media your child is keen on or involved in.

“The internet and the various applications are a lot of fun and a wonderful tool……maximize the benefits and surf safely together!” Susan McLean.

Hope you have a wonderful fortnight, keeping warm and healthy as winter settles in.

Chat soon,
Natasha

Faction Carnival Sausage Sizzle/Father’s Day Raffles

Date TBA

George’s Sausage Sizzle

There’s only 10 days to go until the school Fun Run (previously the Lapathon). If you haven’t set up your child’s profile yet, there is still time. When you set up their profile, your child gets to choose their own reward/s. This provides your child with a sponsorship goal, however all children who set up the profile receive a reward. By setting up your child’s online profile, this allows distant family and friends to sponsor also.

All family reps were sent home with an entertainment book last week. These books are full of discounts for dining, accommodation and adventure activities. This year’s book also includes a section for Bali. There is no pressure to buy the book but by sending it home, it gives parents the opportunity to have a look through to see what is on offer. If you do not wish to purchase the book, please just send it back to school in the envelope provided with your child. There is a box in the front office.

As many of you are already aware, George at the Landsdale Mini Hardware is closing down. George has provided Landsdale Primary School with many donations over the years, so he has asked the P&C to hold a ‘farewell’ sausage sizzle. The sausage sizzle will be held within the next few weeks (date TBA) but please pop down, buy a sausage and thank George for his service to the school and the Landsdale community. If you would like to donate any sausage sizzle items (cans of drink, onions, sauces, serviettes, etc.) please leave them in the front office in the box provided.

The P&C’s next meeting will be held this Tuesday, 6th June at 7.00pm in the school staffroom. Everybody is welcome to attend.

If you would like any information regarding the P&C, and its operation, please contact Amanda Ferguson at anferguson1977@gmail.com.

Visiting Bali?

Dear Parents and Community Members,

As many of you are aware, Landsdale Primary School has a sister school relationship with a school in Bali which was established almost 10 years ago. Over the years we have been involved in many different activities such as fund raising and penpal exchanges. By far the most rewarding part of this partnership for Landsdale students has been when their families have visited our sister school on their Bali holidays.

The school is called SD 2 Kaba Kaba and it is around 20 kilometres, or a 45 minute drive, from the heart of Kuta. It is found in the regency of Tabanan, one of Bali's main rice growing districts.

If you would like to pay them a visit and find out what a day (or even an hour or two) in the life of a Balinese child is like, feel free to contact me and I can help you arrange it. Alternatively you can contact the coordinator in Bali, Alit Widia at alitwidia@yahoo.com and he can help you sort it out. Pak Alit speaks English very well and some students might remember him from his visit to Landsdale Primary School a few years ago. Rest assured you will be made to feel very welcome.

Terima Kasih!

  • In branch
Visit a Commonwealth Bank branch with identification for yourself and your child, like a driver’s licence and birth certificate.

If your child has an existing Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account they can start banking straight away. They just need to bring their deposit in every week on school banking day using their Dollarmites deposit wallet.

School banking day is every Thursday morning from 8-9am. Each week, just bring your money and deposit book to the junior primary block where LA11 and LA12 are located.

If you would like to know more about school banking, please ask for a 2017 School Banking program information pack from the school office or visit the link below.
