15 June 2017
From the Principal
Dear Parents and Families,
One of the defining features of Landsdale Primary School is the use of technology across the school and, in particular, the one to one program. Certainly, being future-focused allows our students the skills that they will need to be competitive in the jobs market. Please continue to support the emphasis on technology.
From the feedback from the parent representatives we are examining the content of our newsletters with a view of making it simpler. However, there are many opinions about what we should do. We will begin slowly and if we get feedback from people if they still want something that we cut, we will place it back. We will begin by moving regular canteen menus to our website.
Over the Christmas holidays the school received a BIG bill from the Water Corporation to the tune of $13,625.75. At a recent school board meeting Margaret Quirk MLA offered to investigate this bill. Because of Margaret's intervention a Water Corporation senior inspector, who investigated the water use, found that our meter was faulty. The account was given a credit adjustment of $6,892.53. How good is that? Thanks, Margaret.

Connect Group – Friday 16th June in the LPS Staffroom
The Landsdale parent connect group is for families of children with special needs, challenging behaviour, learning or emotional difficulties (or any other concerns), to meet and network with one another. This provides the opportunity to talk with likeminded people who may be able to offer support, suggestions and share ideas.
The next catch up will be on Friday 16th June at 2:15pm in the staffroom. We have invited Catherine Simpson from Edith Cowan University's speech therapy department to join us. She is happy to answer any questions of a general nature.
Please come along and join us for this coffee catch up. There is no commitment. Your child does not require a formal diagnosis and it may be that you are concerned and would like to chat. We will also be joined by a deputy principal for part of the session to answer any questions you may have.
Please email me on dkbull@iinet.net.au if you have any queries.
Thanks
Keera Bull
Helping Hands Project
Helping Hands is a program designed to help our students understand that there are people in need who will benefit from understanding their perspective.
Together with the student councillors, the board will be holding a free dress day every term to raise money for a charity or community venture.
The first Helping Hands free dress day will be Tuesday 27th June for a gold coin donation.
We would like community members to nominate charities or community ventures they may feel could benefit from our Helping Hands Project. The support program will be randomly selected from the suggestions received. Suggestions should be emailed to Tania.Burke@education.wa.edu.au.
The purpose of this project is to create a gratitude practice and to raise funds for charities while developing community awareness, understanding and acceptance.

Legends Of Landsdale
Our school cross-country, the Legends of Landsdale, will take place on Friday, 23rd June. It will commence from 11.05am starting with the year 1’s followed by the year 2’s running approximately 600m. The year 3’s will commence at 12 noon followed by the year 4’s. Year 5’s will commence their race at 1.45pm followed by the year 6’s.The distance for the year 3-6 events is approximately 1500m. I encourage all students to participate.
Again, we will participate in a local cross-country event, this time at Kingsway Sporting Complex (football fields). We will be fielding the top 4 boy and girl students from years 1/2 (juniors) who run 600m, 3/4 (intermediate) who run 1300m and 5 and 6’s (seniors) who run 2000m. WHY WEED?
In order to maintain a relevant, dynamic and inviting Library, it is necessary to “weed” the collection on a regular basis. This is part of the policy and procedures of all libraries, including ours. It’s not that we just like to throw out books for the sake of it. Weeding is an important aspect of modern library collection development and maintenance.
This also applies to our online Digital Library. Our borrowers love to access eBooks through our Digital Library. We hope to supplement this platform with the purchase of Audiobooks from Wheelers (the Australian/New Zealand company that supports our Digital Library).

Chaplain’s Chat
We’re at the end of Week 8 of Term 2, just two more weeks and it’s winter school holidays!
Following on from my last fortnight’s article about cyber safety, I highly recommend this 7 minute video clip from an ABC News item with Susan McLean re cyber safety.
http://www.abc.net.au/news/2014-05-28/clear-rules-key-to-cyber-safety/5483142
Former police officer Susan McLean is a cyber crime specialist who has a book out about how to keep kids safe online.
Susan reminds us in the video to keep our families safe by continuing to keep computers, mobile phones, iPods out in public areas.
Schools teach as much as they possibly can on cyber safety, teaching what to consider putting online and what not to put online, reminding students that they do not have to tolerate certain behaviours by friends or strangers, how to block people, stranger beware rules for internet and many other aspects to this world that is our students life. Let’s continue to come together, bringing awareness and understanding.
From the conference I attended here are just a few more apps that you may not know this information about, remembering if you don’t need it now as your child is still quite young, you’ll need to know it for a few years’ time and or for a friend or family member.
Instagram age requirement 13+ is an online photo/video sharing site that has a social networking feature. It allows users to take pictures and videos, apply filters to them, and share them on a variety of social networking services. It is not owned by Facebook. If location services are set to ‘on’ on your device then the GPS position of where you were when you took the pic is easily obtained. Also used for cyber bullying.
Snapchat has a minimum age restriction of 13. Let us continue to help our children know that there are consequences to their online actions, reminding them that anything digital can be stored, copied and shared – even if shared privately and they think it “disappears”.
Hope you have a wonderful fortnight, keeping healthy and safe.
Chat soon,
Natasha

Visiting Bali?
Dear Parents and Community Members,
As many of you are aware, Landsdale Primary School has a sister school relationship with a school in Bali which was established almost 10 years ago. Over the years we have been involved in many different activities such as fund raising and penpal exchanges. By far the most rewarding part of this partnership for Landsdale students has been when their families have visited our sister school on their Bali holidays.
The school is called SD 2 Kaba Kaba and it is around 20 kilometres, or a 45 minute drive, from the heart of Kuta. It is found in the regency of Tabanan, one of Bali's main rice growing districts.
If you would like to pay them a visit and find out what a day (or even an hour or two) in the life of a Balinese child is like, feel free to contact me and I can help you arrange it. Alternatively you can contact the coordinator in Bali, Alit Widia at alitwidia@yahoo.com and he can help you sort it out. Pak Alit speaks English very well and some students might remember him from his visit to Landsdale Primary School a few years ago. Rest assured you will be made to feel very welcome.
Terima Kasih!
