27 July 2017

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Families,

Welcome back to term 3.

Last week I had the privilege of hearing the year 6 speeches for semester 2 leadership roles. Well done to all those who participated in the process. Congratulations to our new leadership group.

A large group of parents came together on Tuesday night to hear some speakers from Currambine Psychology Centre. The presenters spoke on parenting anxious children, emotional regulation and developing a sense of self. Part of this development is resilience. At Landsdale Primary School we continue to talk with students about developing resilience. Resilience is the ability to “bounce back” from stressful or challenging experiences. It involves being able to adapt to changes and approach negative events and sources of stress. Being resilient means we are better able to cope with events when they occur. A resilient child has a better understanding that life is full of challenges and they are continuing to develop a set of problem solving skills to help them deal with these challenges as they arise.

We have a busy term ahead, make sure you add the dates to your calendars for our open night, school photos and sports carnival.

National Consistent Collection of Data 2017

The National Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD) is an annual, compulsory collection of data that counts the number of school students with a disability and the adjustments that those students are receiving.

All schools across Australia collect this data. The data collection aims to enable schools, education authorities and governments to gain a complete understanding of students who are receiving adjustments because of a disability in schools, and how best to support them.

All students are entitled to a quality learning experience at school. Schools are required to make reasonable adjustments, where needed, to assist students with a disability at access and participate in education free from discrimination and on the same basis as other students.

Protecting the privacy and confidentiality of all students and their families is essential. Personal details are not provided.

Landsdale Primary School is completing the NCCD as part of semester two census in week 3.

Further information is available at the link below.

Students Not Returning to Landsdale in 2017

Please let us know if your children currently in Kindy to Year 5 will no longer be attending Landsdale Primary School next year because due to moving house or changing schools. All schools are funded according to our enrolments so it is very important that we plan on accurate enrolment numbers. Families who know they will not be returning to Landsdale Primary School in 2018 are asked to click on the attached link or phone the school.

“50c FRENZY” – FANTASTIC RESULT!

Thank you to all our students, staff and parents who supported the “50c Frenzy Book Sale Day” in the last week of term. It was such a fun day. It was terrific to see so many children getting excited about their book purchases. During the day, we raised the incredible total of $1,363. This amount has been deposited into the Library account and will be used shortly to purchase audiobooks for the Library. We will let you know when our IT staff have installed the audiobooks and how your child can access them.

Thank you to all the parents and students who donated books to sell in the 50c Frenzy Day. Special thanks to our parent volunteers ... Mrs Kath Price, Mrs Belinda von Bergheim, Ms Melinda Fuller and Mrs Amanda Ferguson. And thanks to Mrs Mel Knight for advertising the event through the Parent Link Platform.

Family and friends in a book-fuelled frenzy at the “50c Frenzy Book Sale Day”!

CONGRATULATIONS! BEST BORROWERS FROM TERM 2

Each term, the Library runs a competition to encourage students to develop regular reading habits. We record the borrowing tally for each class and award prizes to the top two classes at the end of term. Last term, FIRST PRIZE went to Miss Parson’s LA 1 class. They won a Scholastic Book Club voucher to the value of $20. SECOND PRIZE went to Mrs McLeod’s LA 5 class who received a $10 Scholastic voucher. Both classes are now choosing their Book Club purchases to share and enjoy in their classroom. Most teachers send Dojo reminders to parents each week about Library times. You can also access the Library Book Change Timetable on the Library website and a laminated copy is displayed on both Library doors.

TERM 3 BOOK BORROWING

Library book change sessions have now commenced. All classes visit the Library each week with their teacher to change their books. Please encourage your child to bring their library books and bags each week. Students may also borrow books before and after school and at lunch time. If Mrs Murray is not in attendance in the Library, please use the Manual Loans Register on the front desk to record your loans. Returns can be placed in the pink bucket or on the Circulation Desk.

HOLIDAY LOANS

July holiday loans were due back on the first day of term (Monday 17th July). Please return or renew your holiday loans this week, if you haven’t already done so. Invoices for unreturned library books will be sent out to parents in week 3 this term.

Chaplain’s Chat

Welcome back to school and I hope you all have a fantastic Term 3. It’s a term of energy and fitness with Faction Carnival, interschool and jumps and throws etc. coming up. There’s lots of opportunity for students to be a part of their school community, to earn points for their factions, to work together as a team, having some great fun and good healthy competition, working together and having fun.

This term I thought I would talk about our I-Values, looking at one of our I-Value’s and a more in depth example of it.

“I am Responsible” – Decision Making, Self-worth, Self-Discipline, Resilience and Adaptability. At Landsdale Primary we have included strengths based on Martin Seligman’s values which are Bravery, Persistence, Integrity and Vitality.

Orderliness is a virtue found in this value – it’s being self-disciplined, where you find yourself being neat and living with a sense of harmony. You are organised and you know where things are when you need them. You are able to solve problems step by step instead of going in circles. The great thing about being self-disciplined by being organised, is that order around you creates order inside you and it gives you peace of mind.

If you find your child or yourself are not being as organised as you possibly could and should be, there are many different self-help blogs and programs out there that try to help you get through the mess and organise yourself but there’s really only one way of getting there, being organised and that’s living with a mantra of “Just do it”. Getting out of bed and turning around to make the bed then and there, just do it. If a sock falls in the middle of the floor, just stop, pick it up then and there, just do it. If you’ve finished eating, then and there pack the dishwasher/wash that dish and wipe down the counter, just do it. This will lead you step by step forward and order will come into your life.

I am looking forward to another great term here at Landsdale Primary School (Mon & Tues), catching up with parents, teachers and students.

P&C President’s Report

Welcome back for Term 3. It’s hard to believe we’re half way through the year already. Unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, the disco will not be going ahead on the 28th July. It will be postponed until Term 4. We will let you know the new date as soon as possible.

So far this year, the P&C have already run a number of fundraisers to raise money for the school’s wishlist items. At this point in time, we have handed over almost $20,000 to fund these items. Our biggest fundraiser this year has been the Fun Run. We raised approximately $14,000. This is a significant increase on past years amounts. Thank you to all who contributed and helped us raise such a large amount. This money will go towards funding more wishlist items.

Our next meeting is Tuesday 1st August at 7pm in the school staffroom.

Everyone is welcome to attend.

If you would like more information on joining the P&C or want to know what we do, please contact Amanda at anferguson1977@gmail.com

Visiting Bali?

Dear Parents and Community Members,

As many of you are aware, Landsdale Primary School has a sister school relationship with a school in Bali which was established almost 10 years ago. Over the years we have been involved in many different activities such as fund raising and penpal exchanges. By far the most rewarding part of this partnership for Landsdale students has been when their families have visited our sister school on their Bali holidays.

The school is called SD 2 Kaba Kaba and it is around 20 kilometres, or a 45 minute drive, from the heart of Kuta. It is found in the regency of Tabanan, one of Bali's main rice growing districts.

If you would like to pay them a visit and find out what a day (or even an hour or two) in the life of a Balinese child is like, feel free to contact me and I can help you arrange it. Alternatively you can contact the coordinator in Bali, Alit Widia at alitwidia@yahoo.com and he can help you sort it out. Pak Alit speaks English very well and some students might remember him from his visit to Landsdale Primary School a few years ago. Rest assured you will be made to feel very welcome.

Terima Kasih!
