2 November 2017

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Families,

While the students are really enjoying our new playground, Mrs Belinda Scott and some of her students (Camille, Graham, Chaise, Chase, Natanee, Alex, Alireza, Zainab, Grace and Cameron) have decorated the outside of the fort with Aboriginal artwork. The artwork depicts the Aboriginal names of wildlife and was funded by the Partnership, Acceptance, Learning and Sharing (PALS) project. We currently have six Aboriginal students, and importantly the school acknowledges the traditional ownership of the land on which the school meets.

There are six school board vacancies this year so the school will be asking for nominations later in the term. The school board is an important decision-making body and in the last two years the board has determined the school direction, discussed our NAPLAN results, behaviour and how the school uses technology. Positions are held for 3 years and members can re-nominate.

Thank you for the parents of children in Kindy to Year 5 who have informed us that they are not returning to our school in 2018.

Building Condition Assessments – Use of Drones

Building Condition Assessments (BCA) are carried out at all schools at regular intervals as part of the Department of Education’s overall asset management strategy.

In addition to the inspection of building internals, drones will be used for the first time to provide footage of roof condition and coverings, including penetration points, box gutters and safety anchor points. All of the drone footage will be given to the Department of Finance’s Building Management and Works and drones will only be used out of school hours, before 8.00am and after 4.00pm weekdays, on weekends or during school holidays.

Drone operators are required to comply with the necessary insurances and certifications including:

  • Current Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) certification.
  • Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) operator certification.

Please, therefore, do not be alarmed if you see drones flying over the school buildings during this period.

2018 1-1 Laptop Program

The ordering Portal for the 1-1 Program for 2018 is now available, the link to the Winthrop portal is on our website and will provide information and prices and you can order a device from the page.

We had two parent information sessions last term where parents were given information relating to the program. We discussed;

  • why the 1-1 Program is important, our students need their learning to be future focused.
  • the benefits of having their own device to use every day and anywhere.
  • the advantages of a Macbook over an iPad in our school and education department environment.
  • how the Macbooks are being used in class and how the power of the MacBook is important to many of the learning opportunities.
  • our findings from our NAPLAN online trials in 2016 and 2017. The MacBooks made the test easier, the iPads had problems that made the testing difficult.
  • Information on the vendor selection and specifics about the program. The Portal is now open for you to access this information and order your device. Winthrop Sales Portal

Due to parent requests we will be holding one more parent information and discussion forum to provide further information and allow you to ask any questions. We will need an assurance that there are enough parents who would like to attend so we can adjust the number of staff required. Please click on the link below to indicate if you are attending.

The forum date and time is Tuesday 14th November at 4pm.

All schools are funded according to our enrolments so it is very important that we plan on accurate student numbers. Families who know they will not be returning to Landsdale Primary School in 2018 are asked to click on the attached link or phone the school.

Landsdale sporting shirts

At all the events students represent Landsdale Primary School, representatives will wear a Landsdale PS ‘sporting shirt’ kindly donated by the P & C. The shirts look absolutely fantastic as you can see and all students across the school will be able to wear them if they are representing the school.

The students need to return the shirts once they have finished the event they are participating in.

Chaplain’s Chat

Hi School,

Week 4 of term 4 already! I hope you are all enjoying the warmer, sunnier days!

As the year feels like it is winding down and at the same time getting busier I was thinking about how we can care for ourselves.

I read a book the other day where the little girl learnt about creating an Emotional First Aid Kit.

Firstly, she learns about the things we need to do to keep our bodies healthy. When we are healthy, our mind is happier, our body is stronger and we can get stuff done.

Ways of keeping healthy - eat healthy food, exercise every day, protect yourself from the sun, drink lots of water, have a good night’s sleep, stay safe, keep clean.

We eat healthy by having fruit and vegetables every day and not eating too much sugary things. We keep clean by bathing or showering daily and washing your hands often throughout the day.

I love this story and will share more about the emotional first aid kit in the next newsletter.
