From the Principal

Dear Parents and Families,

One aspect of our business plan is promoting student wellbeing. Two parents being Janelle Willey and Abby Attwood (School, Board member) have organised ‘kindness rocks’ to be distributed to our students soon. The idea is to randomly spread the good word about kindness. Here is a website that features the program:

At the moment, we are not sure of my tenure as a principal at Landsdale Primary School moving into 2018. Consequently, the school board has determined that we postpone the election of school board members until next year.

Thanks to the P&C for organising the school disco. There were many excited children dancing the night away.

Kind regards,

Dr Tony Beswick
Principal

LEAP – Parenting Ideas

2018 1-1 Laptop Program

Thank you to all the parents who attended the Parent Information and discussion forum on Tuesday, it was well attended and we had really productive discussions. The parents there were really supportive of their child’s educational needs and understood the importance of learning to use technology well. We not only teach the students to use the tech for deeper learning tasks but we are ensuring they know how to use it ethically and safely. Like in all educational situations sometimes students make mistakes. Our job is to make the mistake a teaching and learning moment in which will hopefully prevent the same mistake being made later when children are more independent.

The main points that were discussed were:

  • How we use the Mac books for learning tasks that promote original thinking, engagement and creativity but also reinforce mastery of skills and understanding. Instant feedback is also given to teachers and students for better progress.
  • What procedures and plans are in place to teach students how to have a positive digital footprint and use technology ethically.
  • While parents are able to choose an iPad for their child to join the program, the Macbook is more powerful and versatile for learning situations and connects easily to the network. The iPads are not fully supported on our network at the moment and have more technical issues to resolve. We are working on this and it will improve for iPads over time.
  • Parental controls and managing devices through a mobile device manager (MDM) for a safer and more monitored environment. More information on this soon as it’s being trialled.
  • Information on the vendor and specifics about the program. The Portal is now open for you to access this information and order your device. Winthrop Sales Portal

If you missed the forum and would like to find out more about any of the above points please look at the frequently asked questions section of our website or call the school.

Thanks,

Leanne White
Deputy Principal

Students Not Returning to Landsdale in 2018

Please let us know if your children currently in Kindy to Year 5 will no longer be attending Landsdale Primary School next year due to moving house or changing schools. All schools are funded according to our enrolments so it is very important that we plan on accurate student numbers. Families who know they will not be returning to Landsdale Primary School in 2018 are asked to click on the attached link or phone the school.

Hopman Cup Trophy Tour

Thanks to all those classes that attended the Hopman Cup trophy tour last Thursday. It was great to see Jason and the team from Tennis West show us the trophy in the 30th anniversary of the event and offer some tennis activities to our students. They were very impressed with the flags of countries that had been represented at the Hopman Cup we had made.

Don’t forget tomorrow (Friday, 17th November) Year 6 Interschool Handball @ North Woodvale, students will need to be at school by 8.30am.

Other events this term are;

Friday, 1st December: Year 6 transition games @ Kingsway (12.30-3pm)
Friday 1st December: Year 3-6 Tennis tournament @ Sorrento TC (4pm-6.30pm)

Landsdale Sporting Shirts

At all the events students represent Landsdale Primary School, representatives will wear a Landsdale PS ‘sporting shirt’ kindly donated by the P & C. The shirts look absolutely fantastic and all students across the school will be able to wear them if they are representing the school.

The students need to return the shirts once they have finished the event they are participating in.

SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR…A FANTASTIC SUCCESS!

Wow! What a week it was in the Library last week! The place was buzzing with excited students, paying parents and grandparents and happy teachers. Our Book Fair was an outstanding success. It was so delightful to see so many kids willing to spend their pocket money on fantastic books to read.

We’d like to thank everyone who supported this year’s Book Fair by purchasing books and novelty items. The total sales for the week came to $8,166. Absolutely amazing! From this total, the Library was able to take 35% in commission books from the Book Fair. As such, Mrs Murray has already selected $2,075 worth of books from the Book Fair shelves. These are all the Book Fair books that we don’t yet have in the Library. They are currently being accessioned and should be available for students to borrow early next week (week 7). The remaining $683 worth of commission will be returned to the Library in the form of Scholastic Rewards.

The Book Fair could not happen without the dedicated and tireless work of our Co-P&C President, Mrs Amanda Ferguson. Amanda spent most of the week in the Library and at the Scholastic warehouse, making sure that our students got everything they wanted from the Book Fair. Thank you so much, Amanda. We really appreciate your organisation and effort in running the Book Fair. Amanda was assisted by a terrific team of parent volunteers who willingly gave of their time. We would like to thank these parents in particular for their support:

Sandra Gill, Lesley Bolton, Mel Fuller, Mel Knight, Caitlin Sabatino, Melissa George, Yvonne Savino, Sally Pellegrini, Rowena Casilli, Melanie Pitt, Carolyn Howe and Anyk D’Belanger.

Well done, everyone!

ADVANCED NOTICE

As the end of the school year draws closer, we would like to remind you that there will be no library book borrowing in the final two weeks of term. As such, our 2017 closing date for return of all library loans is FRIDAY 1st DECEMBER. Please ensure that your child is prepared for this deadline and all library books are returned on or before the due date.

Past Student Success Story

One of our past students, Hannah Waddell, has been in Sydney the last few weeks competing in a singing competition by Sony Music which is aired only on YouTube called The Share Space. She has been lucky to have spent her 18th birthday there with Delta Goodrem, had advice and a personal concert with Guy Sebastian and a visit by Jessica Mauboy. The winner gets a Sony Contract and writing trip to LA, Sweden and Paris. If it wasn’t for Mr Angel, the music teacher who was at Landsdale Primary School at the time, encouraging Hannah to sing, she may never have got this far. We wish Hannah all the best.
