8 February 2018
From the Principal
Dear Parents and Families,
Welcome to 2018. It was great to see all the smiles of children and staff coming back to school, so I am really looking forward to this term.
We are hoping to build on the significant 2017 improvements in student results. You can help by talking to your children about putting a lot of effort into their learning. The more effort they put in, the better they feel about themselves.
The exceptional Parent Link Program is firing up for 2018, so get involved.
Mr Ken Armstrong has retired from the Department of Education in late January this year. He has certainly contributed to Landsdale Primary School and we have built on the foundations that he established. Please join me in wishing him well in China.
Subsequently, the position of principal was advertised last week. I am at Landsdale Primary until the end of the term pending the decision of the selection panel.
Regards,
Dr Tony Beswick
Principal

New Website!
At Landsdale we always look for better ways to help busy parents and the community be informed and interact with the school.
This year we are excited to partner with SchoolZine to combine our website with the newsletter and school App. You may have noticed that the school website is different and has some great new features. You now have better access to the latest news and events, can report an absence and download our App for your phone. Submitting forms will become easier as we move to the new online environment.
As with all new things it will take time to transfer all the good old things and make sure all the great new things work effectively. Please visit often and use the “contact us” tab at the top to give us feedback or report an issue.
Welcome to the 1-1 Program!
Thank you to all the parents of Year Four students and new students who have joined, or are in the process of joining, the program this year. Teachers and students are spending the first few weeks establishing agreements that will give the grounding for high standards of self-regulation at school and safety online. Explicitly teaching how to responsibly and appropriately use technology and communication tools provides students with the skills and knowledge to make informed and appropriate choices in the future.
In such busy times, inevitably some parents miss our annual information sessions in Nov/Dec. If you have questions, our website has information and Frequently Asked Question’s to assist you.
The technical aspects of the program are also being established in the first couple of weeks. When you bring your laptop in to school the technicians “image” them. This means settings and software that are school specific are put onto the laptops to ensure a safer and more effective experience.
When the machines are imaged, a note is sent home with information regarding setting up passwords and home wireless. We have a technician onsite every day except Wednesday. Your child is able to let the technician know of any issues with their machine by logging a job on the Helpdesk which you can access through the school website link or by informing their teacher.
If your child is bringing in an iPad, a list of essential Apps and some information regarding their use at school will be sent home soon.
We are excited to begin the journey with your children to engage in rich learning tasks and teach them how to become responsible digital citizens.
On the Ball …. With Mr P
Welcome back to 2018 and this year is another busy one for the physical education program. We hope to have several interschool events available to Landsdale students this term, including interschool tennis and cricket, please see the details below regarding these events.
This year, because of our large student population, two Physical Education specialists run classes on two days. We welcome back Mr Joshua Brown who will be teaching Phys Ed on Thursdays and Fridays. He and I will teach a similar program.
Please make sure your child wears appropriate footwear and a hat when attending Physical Education lessons. A water bottle now is recommended also! If your child cannot participate in Phys Ed lessons due to injury or illness, a verbal or written message from you needs to be communicated to your child’s teacher or myself.
Faction Captain and Vice-Captain Voting
Faction Captain & Vice-Captain voting will take place on Tuesday, 20th February at approximately 8.50am. For each faction there will be a boy and girl captain and a boy and girl vice-captain. Vice-Captains will be taken up by year 5 students, with year 6 students holding the Captain roles. Grevillea will vote in LA 15, Hovea in LA 30, Cassia in LA 14 and Banksia in LA 29.
Interschool Tennis Competitions
At this stage there will be three tennis competitions, held at the State Tennis Centre. Some other venues may be used if required. The first two are the Academy Plate championships geared towards the older students. There is an event for girls and boys, played separately on 22nd and 23rd March respectively. Players will need a sound knowledge of the game and be able to score independently as well as serve and rally the ball consistently over a full-size tennis court.
Try-outs and training for these will generally take place during senior sport time which is Fridays at 2pm.
The other event is the Hot Shots tennis Gala Day, exclusively for Year 3 and 4 students. This event is held on Thursday, 29th March (the day before Good Friday) and we are looking for enthusiastic players that can rally a ball over a modified ‘red ball tennis court’.
Try-outs and training for this event will take place during middle sport time which is Thursdays at 2pm.

Interschool Cricket
Students have started training already for the T20 Blast at Kingsway Sporting Complex. Most try-outs and training for this will be on Wednesday lunchtimes (with Mr P) and Thursday and/or Friday lunchtimes with Mr P or Mr Brown.
Chaplain’s Chat
Welcome back to school, Term 1 of 2018! A special welcome to all our new students and families.
I have loved seeing so many students so happy and enthusiastic to be back to school, they're settling so well into their routines and connecting with their friends in the playground.
There are some great courses available through Relationships Australia - they are advertised in the window of our office, opposite the library - I have seen a few parents taking photos of the details, great idea or check out their website
https://relationshipswa.org.au/en/courses-and-seminars
I am at the school on Mondays and Fridays and if I am in the office with my door open, please feel free to come and say hi or if you would like to make an appointment to see me please call the school or email me - natasha.reynolds3@education.wa.edu.au .

Chaplaincy Opt-out Form
Dear Parents,
At Landsdale Primary School we follow a philosophy of providing pastoral care for our students as part of our aim in achieving academic excellence. Working with our Student Services Team, chaplaincy is an important part of our strategy. Our School Chaplaincy Service is funded by the School.
The pastoral care provided has a broad scope and includes, for example, one on one, and programmed group sessions.
YouthCARE Chaplaincy is an ‘Opt-Out’ program, and thus if we do not hear from you and receive the completed Opt-Out form attached below, the assumption is that you give permission for your child to access chaplaincy services if needed.

Battery Recycling
Battery Recycling – a reminder that we do have a recycle drop off bin in the front office for any used/flat batteries. The bin is collected each term and taken to a recycling plant. A total of 8kgs was collected in Term 4, 2018.

LIBRARY OPEN FOR BORROWING
Welcome back! The start of a new school year is always so exciting.
The Library @ Landsdale is now open for book borrowing. We look forward to seeing our returning students again, and meeting students and parents that are new to our school. The Library is a fun place to visit, as you will quickly discover! The closing date for the return of all books this term will be Tuesday 3rd April, 2018.

Opening Times
The Library is open for book borrowing at these times:
- Before school 8.30-8.45am Mon-Fri
- Lunchtime 1.30-1.45pm Mon, Tues, Thur, Fri (Closed Wed)
- After school 3.00-3.30pm Mon-Fri
All 32 classes have a weekly “Library Book Change Time” organised by their class teacher. Please check your child’s rostered borrowing day with their class teacher and assist your child with remembering their library book and library bag on that day.
Parents/caregivers are most welcome to visit the Library with their child to borrow books before or after school. While here, you may wish to browse through our range of LEAP (Linking Education and Parents) parenting publications which are available for loan. Parents can also sign up to become Library members.
Lending Rules
Students may borrow two books for a period of two weeks. Books may be renewed if not required by other readers. Overdue notices are sent to classrooms every week. Please remind your child to return his/her library books by the due date. Library bags must be used for borrowing. These are available from the Uniform Shop and department stores. Shopping bags are also suitable to use as library bags.
Wheelers eBooks and Audiobooks
All Landsdale Primary students can access our wonderful Digital Library 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Every child has a User Name and Password which allows them to browse, borrow and reserve eBooks and audiobooks on the Digital Library. Find our Digital Library at:
http://landsdalelibrary.weebly.com/
You can also download the Wheelers eBook
platform from the App Store.
Your child’s User Name follows the format: Firstname.Lastname eg: Sharon.Murray
Their Password is a generic one: Library1 (same for
all students).
If you need assistance, please see Mrs Murray in the Library.
Scholastic Book Club
Order forms for the first issue of Book Club will be distributed to classes this week. The due date for return of Issue 1 Scholastic orders is FRIDAY 23rd FEBRUARY @ 9am. Please submit your orders online using the Scholastic LOOP (Linked Online Ordering and Payment) Platform.
The Parent LOOP Platform can be accessed here:
http://www.scholastic.com.au/schools/bookclub/
Ordered items are delivered to school (usually within a two week turnaround) and distributed to classrooms.
Celebrate Library Lovers’ Day on Valentine’s Day
Love your library on Wednesday 14th February! Move over St Valentine, because the 14th February is also Library Lovers’ Day and we will be celebrating.
Students are welcome to write a “love letter” to our library (or their local public library). Teachers will be promoting this activity in their classrooms. Students can drop their letters, cards or notes into the library or the front office for collection and display. Love letter letterhead templates are available from classroom teachers and the Library. Students may wish to write their love letters or draw their pictures on the letterhead or on their own paper.
Library Lovers’ Day is a chance for everyone to reconnect with their library and share the library love. The initiative, coordinated by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA), aims to raise the profile of the services which libraries offer. Australia’s school and public libraries provide quality information services that support lifelong learning, significantly impacting the cultural and information industry.

P&C News – P&C Annual General Meeting – 7pm on Tuesday 20th February
All are welcome to join us for our first meeting of 2018!
Tuesday 20th Feb @ 7pm in the school Staffroom.
This year we are looking forward to following on from last year’s successes with major fundraisers coming up and bringing all the favourites back to you like the Colour Fun Run and the end of year a disco! The new year always brings much enthusiasm and we hope that there’s many of you who would love to join the team. We have a few positions available if you are ready for the challenge! If you love to help spend others money then we are the place for you – that warm fuzzy feeling you’ll get when we approve the wish lists items is why we do what we do and you’ll finish the school year with a sense of pride that comes with leaving a little bit of you behind.
Come join us on the 20th Feb and see what we’re all about. Little or big whatever the contribution is that you can bring - it’ll be a worth weight in gold.

School Parking
Please see the attached booklet on school parking.
It has come to our attention that some parents are parking in St Helen’s Grove which is a private road for residents only. A number of elderly residents live on St Helen’s Grove and if an ambulance was required during school drop off/pick up, it wouldn’t have access to get through. Please do not park on St Helen’s Road at any time.
Kiss n’ Drive and Parking
As with the majority of schools, traffic is usually pretty bad at the beginning of the year around the school.
If you are dropping off or picking up your child, please ensure you use our Kiss n’ Drive area at the front of the school. By cars filing through in turn using this (in the correct manner), it ensures the safety of all students and pedestrians.
If you plan on parking and going into the school, please only use the bays provided. This does not include the bays at the front of the school for Kiss n’ Drive.
Do not park in or across other people’s driveways or property. This is illegal and you will be fined if caught. The Council are also cracking down on illegal parking around schools. If you do have permission to park in someone else’s driveway, your car must be parked after their letterbox as property before the letterbox is council property and again, this will incur a fine.
Please use common sense and obey the law.
School Banking at Landsdale Primary School!
Welcome back everyone! I hope you all enjoyed the school holidays and are ready to get back to banking! There are exciting new rewards, prizes and competitions this year… more information to come, so stay posted!
Come and see us every Thursday morning from 8.00 to 9.00am to get in on the action! Each week, just bring your money and deposit book to the wet area where LA11 and LA12 are located.
