23 August 2018

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Families,

The Ashdale Cluster is a group of schools that work closely together promoting events such as the Cluster Muster, our premier musical event of the year. Also, teachers regularly meet to work together to improve learning across our five schools. Recent events are the free cyber safety parent information evenings because we all want our children to be safe from people that intend to do us harm. Details below.

Thanks to all who completed our parent survey in the past few weeks. We use this information to improve our service to you, as parents. While the Department of Education expects us to survey you once every two years, we ask you to complete it annually so that we can respond more quickly.

Regards,
Dr Tony Beswick
Principal

Students Not Returning to Landsdale Primary School in 2019

If your child/ren are not returning to Landsdale Primary School for the 2019 school year, can you please advise the front office in person or by emailing Jennifer.shepherd@education.wa.edu.au.

New school details are required upon advisement.

Farewell to Natasha Reynolds

It is with great sadness that we farewell our wonderful school chaplain Natasha Reynolds. Natasha has been successful in gaining a position as an Area Chaplain for YouthCARE. This is a fabulous opportunity for Natasha to lead and guide a team of chaplains, but it means that she will be leaving us on August 24th to take up her new position. As a school community I know that we all join together in wishing her all the best in her new role.

Allergy Friendly School Reminder

As an Allergy Friendly school, parents are reminded to ensure that they do not send nut based products to school in students’ lunches, including peanut paste/butter, Nutella and nut based muesli bars. We have a number of students who can have severe allergic reactions to exposure to nuts.

We thank you for your support with this. Please contact Leonie Mattock on 9302 4100 if you require any further information.

Lost Property

This term we have had an extraordinary amount of “lost property”. Please help us to return items to the rightful owner by ensuring items are CLEARLY LABELLED WITH YOUR CHILD’S FIRST NAME & SURNAME.

Swimming - We have a large amount of swimming goggles, towels, dressing gowns and bathers!

Australian Girls’ Choir

The Australian Girls’ Choir will be holding an assessment workshop at Landsdale Primary School on Thursday August 30 at 10.30am. Please complete the permission form sent home earlier this week, and return to the front office, if you would like your daughter to participate in the assessment workshop.

Please contact Leonie Mattock on 9302 4100 if you require any further information.

2019 Parent Funded 1-1 Program

Preparations have begun for the 1-1 program for students in Year 4 in 2019. We annually evaluate our program to ensure our students have the best opportunities to acquire essential skills in digital technologies for their future. The parent funded 1-1 program is vital to this goal and we recognise and value your commitment to your children’s education.

Last year we examined which device to base our program on, the iPad or the Macbook Air. Based on student and staff surveys, parent feedback and consultation with the school board, it was decided that the MacBook Air should remain our recommended device.

The response from parents was overwhelmingly positive this year with 85% of students having their own device and of those all but 4 where Macbooks. The Year 4 students have been using their devices to enhance their learning and to develop safe and appropriate usage skills and knowledge. In 2019 we will continue to recommend the MacBook Air 13” as the preferred device, while including the option of the iPad; there is also a leasing option for both devices.

From the consultation process the top reasons from staff, students and parents for preferring the Macbook over an iPad were, the Macbook;

  • was more powerful and had more features in the applications which are common to both Mac and iPad eg. Pages, Garageband, iMovie.
  • was easier to use for staff and students when accessing tools for learning like the internet, google suite and network resources.
  • has a bigger screen and keyboard.
  • has better management tools for applications and student monitoring and network resources, eg. being able to have the school image, Parental controls and Remote desktop for teacher supervision of student use.

We partner with Winthrop Australia to obtain the best educational prices and technical support and they provide a convenient and easy online portal for you to order a device for your child to join the program. You are of course free to purchase anywhere however we hope you attend the information session to inform your choice.

Prior to purchasing a device, please attend one of our parent information sessions for more information and discussion with our 1-1 leadership team:

Cyber Safety Parent Information Evenings

The Ashdale Cluster invites its parents to one of two free information sessions about cyber safety being run by Paul Litherland from Surf Online Safe.

Paul, an ex Police Officer of 20 years, spent the last five years of his Policing career in the Technology Crime Investigation Unit. This Unit is internationally recognised as one of the leading technology crime divisions in the world. After this experience, he realised there were limited resources available to parents, schools and children about the online world, so he created Surf Online Safe.

Paul's engaging and informative sessions focus on educating students and community members on how to be safe online and raise awareness of current online risks.

You can read more about Paul Litherland and his business, Surf Online Safe, in the link below.

http://www.surfonlinesafe.com.au/

The parent information evenings will be held on Monday 27 August and Tuesday 28 August from 6.30 - 8.00pm. Cyber Safety sessions will also be run during the day for our Cluster primary and secondary students.

The tickets are limited to 300 per evening. Please register on Eventbrite in the link below.

Long Jump, Long Throw & Distance Events

Congratulations to all students that competed in the long jump and long throw events for years 3-6 last Monday, August 13. It was great to see all the students competing to their very best ability and for their efforts, they are to be congratulated. A culmination of these events and the Faction Athletics Carnival will be in the next newsletter.

Faction Athletics Carnival

Our Faction Athletics Carnival is upon us on Thursday, August 23. It promises to be an enjoyable day and a program is attached for your convenience.

National Health & Physical Education Day

National Health & Physical Education Day is on Wednesday, September 5. To celebrate this, I am holding ‘sports stall’ whereby several sporting agencies have been invited to attend and promote their sport at Landsdale. As not to conflict with school photos, this will take place on Friday, September 7 on the oval, tennis courts and the undercover area between 11am – 1pm. Parents are most welcome to attend, but students must remain with their designated teacher.

I have had interest from several sports already, including tennis, athletics, rugby, hockey, triathlon, touch football and cricket so far.

CHILDREN’S BOOK WEEK – WEEK 7

To celebrate the culmination of Children’s Book Week, we are again holding our Whole School Dress-Up Day & Parade on FRIDAY 31st AUGUST, 2018 (Week 7) for all students and staff from Kindy to Year 6.

Children are invited to dress up as either a character from a book they know or as the book itself or they can wear a costume that relates to this year’s Book Week theme of “Find Your Treasure”. Remember that it doesn’t have to be physical treasure. The theme can also be interpreted as something that is precious or of value to your child. We ask that students bring their chosen book with them (or borrow it from the Library), to show the relationship between their costume and their book. We encourage creativity and originality. Home-made costumes are perfect, as the fun is in the process of creating with your child, rather than the end product. (No need to purchase or hire expensive costumes.) All students who participate in the Dress-Up Day Parade will receive a “Find Your Treasure” bookmark.

This year we are asking for a gold coin donation from students and staff who dress up. Funds will be donated to the “Room To Read” charity, of which our visiting author, James Foley, is an ambassador:

https://www.roomtoread.org/

Two parades will be held on the quadrangle outside the Undercover Area (weather permitting) on FRIDAY 31st AUGUST, for students to share their costumes and books with the school community:

  • Junior Parade - Kindy (Bilby B & Joey B only*) PP, Yr 1, Yr 2 @ 9.00am
  • Senior Parade - Yr 3, Yr 4, Yr 5, Yr 6 @ 10.00am

Parents are welcome to attend this event. Please contact Mrs Murray in the Library on 9302 4100 if you have any questions about the Book Week Dress-Up Day & Parade. Thank you for your participation. We look forward to seeing everyone dressed up and enjoying themselves on FRIDAY 31st AUGUST.

Happy Book Week!

  • Please note: Kindy students who attend school on Fridays will participate in the Junior Parade on Friday 31st August. (ie: Mrs Forrest’s Bilby B class and Mrs Wilson’s Joey B class.)

Possum A (Mrs Caratti), Joey A (Mrs Marple) and Bilby A (Mrs Figliomeni) will hold their Dress-Up Parade on the morning of Monday 27th August in the K/PP area. Please check with your child’s Kindy teacher for clarification.
