6 September 2018

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Families,

Thanks for all the effort that you put in creating wonderful Book Week costumes for your children last week. There were many beautiful costumes and great big smiles! It was a fantastic promotion for reading, which is a priority for the school.

There are marvellous extension programs at our school such as physical education and arts programs throughout the year. Here are a couple of new ones. First, we have an extension Year 4-6 Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) course beginning soon on Fridays. Second, the Year three students have been writing in Italian to Ashdale Primary students and on 10 September they will be joining us for a celebration of success.

Regards,

Dr Tony Beswick
Principal

This term we have had an extraordinary amount of “lost property”. Please help us to return items to the rightful owner by ensuring items are CLEARLY LABELLED WITH YOUR CHILD’S FIRST NAME & SURNAME.

Swimming - We have a large amount of swimming goggles, towels, dressing gowns and bathers!

2019 Parent Funded 1-1 Program

Preparations have begun for the 1-1 program for students in Year 4 in 2019. We annually evaluate our program to ensure our students have the best opportunities to acquire essential skills in digital technologies for their future. The parent funded 1-1 program is vital to this goal and we recognise and value your commitment to your children’s education.

Last year we examined which device to base our program on, the iPad or the Macbook Air. Based on student and staff surveys, parent feedback and consultation with the school board, it was decided that the MacBook Air should remain our recommended device.

The response from parents was overwhelmingly positive this year with 85% of students having their own device and of those all but 4 where Macbooks. The Year 4 students have been using their devices to enhance their learning and to develop safe and appropriate usage skills and knowledge. In 2019 we will continue to recommend the MacBook Air 13” as the preferred device, while including the option of the iPad; there is also a leasing option for both devices.

In choosing between the MacBook and an iPad Pro parents have told us that they preferred the Macbook over an iPad because it;

  • was more powerful and had more features in the applications which are common to both Mac and iPad eg. Pages, Garageband, iMovie.
  • was easier to use for staff and students when accessing tools for learning like the internet, google suite and network resources.
  • has a bigger screen and keyboard.
  • has better management tools for applications and student monitoring and network resources, eg. being able to have the school image. Finally, there are stronger parental controls and Remote desktop for teacher supervision of student use.

We partner with Winthrop Australia to obtain the best educational prices and technical support and they provide a convenient and easy online portal for you to order a device for your child to join the program. You are of course free to purchase anywhere however we hope you attend the information session to inform your choice.

Prior to purchasing a device, please attend one of our parent information sessions for more information and discussion with our 1-1 leadership team:

Nude Food Day at Landsdale Primary School

Next Tuesday, on the 11th September 2018, Landsdale Primary School is hosting its first ever, Nude Food Day!

To join us, bring a rubbish-free, or 'nude' lunch box. Use some containers instead of rubbish (e.g. tiny teddy packets, roll-ups, packaged items). Durable, reusable containers are a great way to bring food, as they may last from pre-primary through to high school and beyond, providing long term cost savings and environmental benefits.

By the way, there's a prize! Students will receive a raffle ticket if they bring a rubbish-free lunch box to school next Tuesday. Your child just might win!

Are you wondering why we are doing this? Well, we're hosting our first ever Nude Food Day because we would like to reduce the amount of rubbish in our school, and therefore the amount of rubbish sent to landfill. It will also save sea creatures from choking on glad wrap or getting straws stuck in their mouths and noses.

Lunch and recess orders from the canteen will still be running as per usual.

So, don't forget to bring a rubbish-free lunch box, and thank you kindly for your continued support.

Landsdale Primary’s Quest to Reduce Waste and Live Sustainably

This year, Landsdale Primary School successfully applied for a Waste Wise grant to expand our efforts to reduce waste and live more sustainably. Many classes have undertaken specific projects to try and make a difference. As soon as we receive our funds, you will begin to notice more activity across our school.

We are hoping to involve and excite all our families to come on this journey with us to change our world.

Some things we have already done:

Kindy and Mrs Caratti have some lovely chickens and are recycling food waste, generating chook poo fertiliser and, hopefully, soon collecting fresh eggs.

You may have completed LA 27's Living Sustainably student Google Form survey in July-August this year. We are analysing this data to find out how we can support families to reduce their waste and packaging at home, as well as in student lunch boxes.

The infographics below show some of our early findings.

Year 6 students and the Environment Committee with Mrs Checksfield have been industriously making and selling Worm Wizz to help you use organic fertiliser on your vegetables and herbs, or in your garden.

The Year 6 students also worked with Mrs Checksfield in August to promote Onya reusable products as a fund raiser, and ahead of our first Nude Food Lunch day next week. Hopefully you managed to buy some Nude Food items. We have started to see lots of students with reusable beeswax lunch wraps instead of plastic!

Year 3 students with Miss Herbert will be organising the first Nude Food Day next week. There will be some prizes for lunch boxes with zero waste where no packaging or rubbish goes to landfill.

Landsdale PS is also busy organising our first Waste Wise and Living Sustainably Community Mini-Expo to help you find exciting and rewarding ideas, strategies and resources that help you to reduce waste and live in tune with our Earth. Planning is in the early stages; some of the topics we hope to cover at this stage include:

  • how to compost at home
  • how to make a worm farm
  • how to sort your recycling effectively
  • how to reduce packaging and plastic in your child's lunch box (get rid of those multi chip packets!)
  • how to make your own 'Boomerang Bag' or reusable produce bags
  • how to make some of your own products (either personal care or cleaning)
  • where to buy in bulk

Put this date in your diary and come along to our school.

Music Notes …. With Miss Rogerson

A huge congratulations to the choir who performed at the One Big Voice concert on Friday, 17th August at the Perth Arena. The choir joined 6000 students from across WA to sing in a non-competitive massed choir. It was a huge success! This was the first time the choir got to show off their new choir vests, generously funded by the P&C. They looked fantastic!

Landsdale Wide Stall of Sports Day!

National Health & Physical Education Day is on Wednesday, September 5. To celebrate this, I am holding ‘sports stall’ whereby several sporting agencies have been invited to attend and promote their sport at Landsdale. As not to conflict with school photos, this will take place on Friday, September 7 on the oval, tennis courts and the undercover area between 11.30am – 1pm. Parents are most welcome to attend, but students must remain with their designated teacher.

I have had interest from several sports already, including tennis, athletics, rugby, hockey, triathlon, touch football and cricket so far.

Faction Athletics Carnival

Congratulations to all the students that participated in the Faction Athletics Carnival last Thursday.

All students tried very hard with the events they participated in and should be very proud of their efforts. Thanks very much to all staff and parents for supporting the children throughout the day – it was great to see.

Many thanks to everybody that assisted on the day and leading up to the event. Thanks to the staff of Landsdale PS for their work in placing students in events. The day could not go ahead without all the assistance from volunteers and last minute helpers, including the canteen staff and all their hard work and the P & C. Thanks also to Mrs Della Gatta and Mrs Woods for doing a great job as our recorders, Timing Gates WA, St. John Ambulance and Ashdale Secondary College students. Well done everybody!

Well done to Cassia for again being deserved winners of the sportsmanship award. This faction has deserved to win the award this year, not just on Faction Carnival Day but throughout training and PE lessons and thanks to my ‘sportsmanship spies’ throughout the day for taking careful notice of terrific sportsmanship. In saying that though, all factions should be very proud of their behaviour and sportsmanship in this year’s sports carnival.

Well done Grevillea for winning the championship trophy – it was well deserved and a great team effort.

BRILLIANT BOOK WEEK!

Thanks to all our parents, staff and students for their enthusiastic participation in Children’s Book Week. We had some amazing costumes based on the “Find Your Treasure” theme, as well as some old favourites. It was encouraging to see so many students dressed up and getting into the spirit of the week. A special thank you to our parents and grandparents for helping students dress up in their colourful costumes.

If your child received a “Find Your Treasure” bookmark with a gold dot on the back, please remind them to come into the Library before the end of term to cash in their prize of an extra book to borrow each week until Friday 21st September.

Thank you to everyone in our school community who donated to the “Room to Read” charity on the Book Week Dress-Up Day. As yet, we have not finalised the contributions. However, we will advise you of the total funds raised as soon as this becomes available.
