18 October 2018
From the Principal
Dear Parents and Families,
Term four has kicked off in earnest and Book Fair is coming!
I am pleased that the students have done well this year in NAPLAN testing. All the Year 3 results are over the national average, which is higher than the state average. Year 5 students have also done well with numeracy, spelling, grammar and writing above the national averages. The Year 5 reading result was above the state average and less than 0.009% below the national average.
Our early childhood results have also improved over time.
These are great results. All students and teachers have worked hard to ensure that results improve and we are grateful for your on-going support.
Teachers are now constructing class lists for 2019. We are seeking your advice in terms of any information that could assist us. This information should concern clashes your child has with others, perceived bullying or family issues. Please email Tania.Burke@education.wa.edu.au or send a letter marked ‘Private and Confidential’ to Tania by Thursday 1st November, 2017.
Regards,
Dr Tony Beswick

2019 Year 4-6 1-1 Laptop Program
Is your child entering Year 4 in 2019 or are you considering joining your year 5 or 6 child into the 1-1 program? Read on!
Our parent funded 1-1 Laptop program ensures our students have the best opportunities to acquire essential skills in digital technologies for their future. We recognise and value the parents of our senior students’ commitment to their children’s education.
In 2018 we gave parents the option of choosing the MacBook Air 13” or the iPad for the program. Teachers, students and our parent representatives all strongly recommended the MacBook as the school’s preferred device.
The response from parents this year has been overwhelmingly positive, with 85% of students having their own device and of those all but 4 were MacBooks.
For 2019 we continue to recommend the MacBook Air 13” as the preferred device, while including the option of the iPad; there is also a leasing option for both devices.
We recommend the MacBook Air 13” over the iPad for the following reasons, the MacBook:
- is more powerful and has more features within applications common to both Mac and iPad eg. Pages, Garageband, iMovie, google suite.
- is easier to use for staff and students when accessing tools for learning like the internet, google suite and network resources.
- has a larger screen and keyboard.
- has better tools for applications, student monitoring and network resources, eg. being able to have the school image, teachers being able to monitor student usage in real time.
- has stronger parental controls and Remote desktop for teacher supervision of student use.
- is sturdier and has greater longevity.
We partner with Winthrop Australia to obtain the best educational prices and onsite technical support. They provide a convenient and easy online portal for you to order a device for your child. If you source a device elsewhere consider the portal information to compare accurately.

Sustainability Mini Expo
As part of our Wastewise Schools grant, Landsdale Primary School is hosting a Sustainability Mini Expo next Tuesday October 23, 2018. Visitors will have an opportunity to follow the “Sustainability Trail” between 2 – 3pm to see what’s happening around the school, and then hear from our community experts on ways to minimise waste and live more sustainably between 3 – 4pm. We hope to see you there.
COME ALONG TO OUR MINI SUSTAINABILITY EXPO NEXT TUESDAY 23 OCTOBER 3-4PM
Did you know that reducing waste going to landfill has a direct impact on reducing greenhouse gas emission (mainly methane), and, as a result, reduces warming and can impact climate change?
No? Then read on. Look at the link on the LA 27 Infographic attached to read up on the relationship between waste in landfill, emissions, greenhouse gases and climate change.
If you watched the news this week, you will be aware that the United Nations recently published their findings on Climate change, and a warning that there is a small window of opportunity for positive change before we reach a 'tipping point. Want to know more?

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Landsdale Primary School students and teachers are passionate about creating a more positive environmental future. We want our students and their children to enjoy the beauty of the Great Barrier Reef.
This year, we received just over $4000 from a successful Waste Wise grant to really expand our efforts to reduce waste going to landfill. We have been busy doing lots in school, but one of our initiatives was to encourage our school and local community to also look at ways to reduce their plastic and packaging in landfill.
We conducted an online survey of our school community over Term 3 to find out how sustainably our families were living. The survey helped us identify areas where further information could help each family take the next step to reduce plastic and packaging. Many families joined up for the Plastic Free July challenge and have already made positive changes.
Are you ready to take the next step? Or to take another step towards sending less waste to landfill?
We have organised a Mini Community 'Living Sustainably' Expo to provide information on areas of need identified in our online survey.
Come along between 3 and 4 pm next Tuesday 23rd October and find out about:
- how to sort your recycling waste more efficiently
- how to make or buy Boomerang Bags, join a local sewing group, make your own produce bags
- have the kids decorate their very own calico cloth bag
- turn old T-shirts into recycled bags
- find out about how to buy in bulk using your own recycled containers - Wasteless Pantry Greenwood
- see a range of re-usable products such as beeswax wraps to use instead of plastic
- see how we make our own organic Worm Wizz - so good for your garden
- see how we recycle fruit and veg scraps in our worm farm and use these castings in our veggie gardens
- watch a video or demonstration of Bokashi Bins - a few will be on display from Environment House
- find out about other recycled products to replace plastic straws and toothbrushes!
Hope to see you there. Help us change the world for all the children of the future.
PS - Parent helpers for the calico bag decoration and make your own T-shirt recycled bag welcome. Contact Mrs Marrion in LA 27 (Mon - Thurs) or on Ella.Marrion@education.wa.edu.au.

Chaplain’s Chat
Hey all,
My name is James Middleton and I’ve recently started at Landsdale Primary School as the new chaplain. Previous to my role here at Landsdale Primary I have worn many different hats, including being a chaplain previously at Dunsborough Primary School. My other roles have ranged from extensive roles working with children and teenagers in pastoral care, to fence manufacturing, to building websites! You could say I am a bit of an all-rounder. I’m looking forward to playing my role in continuing to develop a positive school atmosphere, ensuring your children have the best opportunity to develop and grow into healthy, happy and successful students. I’m married, my wife’s name is Kelsey and she is a secondary school teacher. I am also an avid supporter of the AFL premiers, the West Coast Eagles! Very excited to be part of Landsdale Primary School.
