1 November 2018
From the Principal
Dear Parents and Families,
I am pleased to let you know our school has been successful in our application of creating a specialist science laboratory. Work on converting an existing room will occur during 2020 or 2021, depending on construction schedules. We will also receive $25,000 to purchase science resources to equip the laboratory. Funding will be allocated to our school on completion of the refurbishment.
These new facilities and resources will enable us to create an innovative sustainability hub in the school so that our students excel at science from Kindergarten right through to Year 6 and beyond.
On Wednesdays in weeks 2, 4, 6 and 8, Storytime in the Library sessions have been running at 8.30-9.30am for our new kindy families. Kindy teachers model the reading of a story and parents receive health and educational information. You can even take home library books. We received sponsorship from Wangara Honda to purchase resources and library bags for new families. If you have missed the first two the next one is on the 14th November.
Book Fair is alive and well at Landsdale Primary School. Come and have a look at the lovely pearls of wisdom!
Last week, the P&C led the celebration of the contribution of teachers to your child’s education. It was a touching moment and we would like to thank your children who contributed to the event.
Teachers are now constructing class lists for 2019. We are seeking your advice in terms of any information that could assist us. This information should concern clashes your child has with others, perceived bullying or family issues. Please email Tania.Burke@education.wa.edu.au or send a letter marked ‘Private and Confidential’ to Tania by close of business today.
Regards,
Dr Tony Beswick

2019 Year 4-6 1-1 Laptop Program
Thank you to all the parents who attended the Parent Information and discussion forum last Monday, it was well attended and we had really productive discussions. The parents were really supportive of their child’s educational needs and understood the importance of learning to use technology well. We teach the students to use the devices for deeper learning tasks and we are ensuring they know how to use it ethically and safely.
The main points that were discussed were:
- How we use the Mac books for learning tasks that promote original thinking, engagement and creativity but also reinforce mastery of skills and understanding. Instant feedback is also given to teachers and students for better progress.
- What procedures and plans are in place to teach students how to have a positive digital footprint and use technology ethically.
- While parents are able to choose an iPad for their child to join the program, our recommended device is the Macbook Air 13” as it is more powerful and versatile for learning situations, sturdier and connects more easily to the network.
- Parental controls and managing devices through a mobile device manager (MDM) for a safer and more monitored environment. The Macbook has better parental controls built in and the iPad would need the third party mobile device management (MDM) tool, which we are trialling and could be provided at a small cost to parents.
- Information on the vendor and specifics about the program. The Portal is now open for you to access pricing and device specifications information and order your device.
- If you missed the forum and would like to find out more about any of the above points please look at the frequently asked questions section of our website or call the school.
- The response from parents this year to the program has been overwhelmingly positive, with 85% of students having their own device and of those all but 4 were MacBooks.
We partner with Winthrop Australia to obtain the best educational prices and onsite technical support. They provide a convenient and easy online portal for you to order a device for your child. If you source a device elsewhere consider the portal information to compare accurately.

Chaplain’s Chat
Balance
Have you ever felt busy before? Just reading the word busy can be enough to cause stress. How about this question, have you ever said something like ‘I need a better balance?’. Very possibly, yes. And yet, I’d like to suggest that balance may not be the right goal.
In my first few weeks in my role as chaplain I’ve had to juggle many things as I adjust to a new normal. Rather than seeking ‘balance’, I’m checking priorities. Balance suggests equal but that is not always most appropriate. Balance may suggest I spend time with my wife and time with my pet, but we all know that if I’m spending as much time with my pet as I am with my wife…that’s probably not good!
Here’s the thing: even with our children I think balance can be the wrong goal. Each of our children is unique, has unique personalities and unique ways of coping. As I work with different children, I’m not always looking for balance, what I am looking for is finding what that child needs, at that time. Sometimes this will be a 5 minute chat, other times it may be drawing for 15 minutes. What is most important is that each child gets what they need in that time. And in life, each task gets what it needs at that time.
Here’s my hope for you. As you manage all the demands of family life, I hope you are able to find the right mix of priorities, to the extent they need, at the right time, within the natural seasons of life. I’m just not sure this will always look all that balanced.
