From the Principal
Dear Parents and Families,
Teachers are currently completing reports. One of the activities done before and during reporting is that they look at examples of student work. They grade their students’ work and then reach a team consensus on what grade should be given. To do this they refer to a judging standards matrix to ensure our judgements are in line with national standards. It is time consuming and technical work, but necessary to improve education.
Recently, a former student Selma H (left) and current year 6 student Latifah H (right) won gold medals at the national Taekwondo competition. Please join me in congratulating them both. Landsdale students helped in fund raising efforts for expenses.
Regards,
Dr Tony Beswick

Mathletics
Each year Landsdale Primary School asks parents to contribute towards the cost of online programs that their children will access to support the teaching and learning happening in the classroom. Mathletics is one of these programs that children are able to access, both at school and at home. Mathletics is designed to provide students with a motivating, safe learning experience in which they access targeted mathematics curriculum content, structured and interactive support, along with engaging games and rewards.
Attached is a progress summary for Landsdale students for the 2018 academic year. It is exciting to see the level of student engagement with the program, with 2580 certificates awarded to students for achieving more than 1000 points in a single week of Mathletics usage.
If you have any questions about Mathletics, please contact Leonie Mattock or Leanne White.

2019 Year 4-6 1-1 Laptop Program
Thank you to all the parents who attended our earlier Parent Information and discussion forums. They were well attended and we had really productive discussions. The parents were really supportive of their child’s educational needs and understood the importance of learning to use technology well. We teach the students to use the devices for deeper learning tasks and we are ensuring they know how to use it ethically and safely.
The main points that were discussed were:
- How we use the Mac books for learning tasks that promote original thinking, engagement and creativity but also reinforce mastery of skills and understanding. Instant feedback is also given to teachers and students for better progress.
- What procedures and plans are in place to teach students how to have a positive digital footprint and use technology ethically.
- While parents are able to choose an iPad for their child to join the program, our recommended device is the Macbook Air 13” as it is more powerful and versatile for learning situations, sturdier and connects more easily to the network.
- Parental controls and managing devices through a mobile device manager (MDM) for a safer and more monitored environment. The Macbook has better parental controls built in and the iPad would need the third party mobile device management (MDM) tool, which we are trialling and could be provided at a small cost to parents.
- Information on the vendor and specifics about the program. The Portal is now open for you to access pricing and device specifications information and order your device.
- If you missed the forum and would like to find out more about any of the above points please look at the frequently asked questions section of our website or call the school.
- The response from parents this year to the program has been overwhelmingly positive, with 85% of students having their own device and of those all but 4 were MacBooks.
We partner with Winthrop Australia to obtain the best educational prices and onsite technical support. They provide a convenient and easy online portal for you to order a device for your child. If you source a device elsewhere consider the portal information to compare accurately.

FANTASTIC BOOK FAIR!
Wow! What an incredible P&C Scholastic Book Fair we had in the Library during Week 4. It was such a successful outcome. Thank you to all our wonderful students, parents and staff who supported this whole school community event. Great people making a big difference to our school! Our P&C Book Fair Co-Ordinator, Mrs Mel Fuller, did a terrific job of planning, promoting and running the Fair for the whole week. This was her first Book Fair. She was well supported by a great team of parent volunteers.
Total sales for the week = $8,607.25
Total commission raised = $2,869.50
This commission goes directly back into the Library in the form of new books for our students to enjoy. We have already selected $2,012 worth of books from the Book Fair. These 155 books have now been accessioned, labelled and covered. They are now available for borrowing from the Library. The remaining $857.50 of commission will be used to select new library books from the final issue of Scholastic Book Club (Issue 8). These books will be available for borrowing before the end of the school year.

On the Ball …. With Mr P
Interschool Handball- November 9
Congratulations to all the students that competed last Friday in the interschool handball competition held at North Woodvale Primary School. A great, albeit warm, day was had by all and Landsdale achieved third place overall, with our Boys A team achieving second place. Well done to North Woodvale who were again too good.
Thanks, Mr Zyrucha, for organising another great handball carnival!
More events on the Landsdale sporting calendar are below;
Please return permission notes for these events as soon as possible.
- Friday, November 30 Year 6 transition games @ Kingsway (12.30-3pm). Students will be required to wear their normal green school shirt for this event.
- Thursday, December 6 Year 3/4 Hot Shots Tennis tournament @ State Tennis Centre. Times and fixtures out shortly.
- Friday, December 7 Year 1-6 Tennis tournament @ Sorrento TC (4pm-6.30pm)
The Sorrento Tennis Club tennis tournament is a tournament held outside of school hours (4pm-6.30pm) for about 20 students. I have only just found out that students from years 1-2 can also be involved. To save on transport costs and because of the later time, if your child is successful in gaining a place in this event, I will ask for parent help in transporting and picking up of children from this event. Students involved will receive a note soon.
Physical Education Term 4
Please make sure your child wears appropriate footwear and a hat when attending Physical Education lessons. A water bottle is recommended also! If your child cannot participate in Phys Ed lessons due to injury or illness, a verbal or written message from you needs to be communicated to your child’s teacher or myself.
Chaplain’s Chat
The trouble with love
Ever tried to speak French to a person who speaks Italian? Though words are spoken, communication is not really happening. Sure, you might catch some of the gist from tone, expression and body language, but you will likely miss the main point. The same thing can happen with love.
Author Gary Chapman suggests there are five love languages, ways that people experience and show love. They are quality time, words of affirmation, acts of service, receiving gifts and physical touch. Everyone can receive love in each language, but most people resonate with one or two more. For example, I’m not really a hugger…but I have friends who feel hurt if they don’t get a hug when we meet up. Why? Because they appreciate physical touch.
Most people express love naturally the way they receive it, just like a person naturally speaks the language they learn as a child. The challenge, though, is that the goal of love is not to just show it, but ensure the other person feels it. To do that, we have to find ways to show love in the way the other person receives it.
When you consider the above love languages, can you identify how you and your loved ones, in particular your children, most feel love? Perhaps you could try and identify it, then look to show love not just how you naturally would, but also how they may receive it more easily. You may just find that not only love, but also communication improves over time.
James,
Chaplain
