From the Principal
Dear Families,
With our Principal, Ken Armstrong, on long service leave for the remainder of the year I will be in the role of Principal. The opportunity Ken has taken leave for provided little time for him to give Parents much warning of the change, however the quality of the school’s administration and staff is such that the interim period prior to the new Principal starting should go very smoothly.
It was great to see so many parents at the Faction Athletics Carnival and thank you to you all for your positive contribution to the day. I had the pleasure of being “Chief Judge” and it was wonderful to witness the sportsmanship of our students. Students congratulated and encouraged each other, supported those who were disappointed and cheered for every last competitor wherever they were placed. Congratulations to all the students, staff and parents for participating fully and making it such a great day.
A huge thank you to our Phys Ed team of Mr Puccinelli, Mr Farrell and Mr Bennett for organising the carnival so well and the staff for all their hard work. Finally well done to the students and congratulations to Cassia for the Sportsmanship Award and Hovea for winning overall Faction. Mr P will have all the fine details regarding the carnival on the school website.
Bookweek went very well and the Dress as a Book Character day was fantastic. The students looked great, so did a lot of the staff! The support for the Great Book Buy for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation was fantastic, thank you to all the parents who donated and purchased books. A big thank you to Ray White Real Estate Landsdale for providing the sausage sizzle which raised money for our library. We are really fortunate to have such a supportive community within Landsdale.
Next week the Interschool Carnival is to be held at Madeley Primary School. Jumps and Throws are on Tuesday 15th September and the other events are on Thursday 17th September. The students selected for these events have been notified and are training very hard to do their best for Landsdale. We wish them the best of luck and know they will represent our school with dignity and pride.
Parents please remember when you are picking your child up from Kiss and Drive after school that you cannot park at any time in the Kiss and Drive designated area. If you arrive and your child is not yet there, you need to keep driving and return. We have been informed by the police that the round-about must keep moving to allow traffic to flow. To do this we cannot allow cars to be stationary any longer than it takes for the students to get into the car. Thank you to the parents who are assisting us with this as it makes the process more efficient for all.
Kind regards,
Leanne White

Working Memory Training For All The Family
Please read the attached items on Working Memory Training for all the family.
Mathletics and Spellodrome
The resources available to students online through the iPads and Macbooks are very valuable to enhance their learning experience. Mathletics and Spellodrome are used extensively throughout the school in PP to Year 6 and provide engaging and self paced literacy and numeracy tasks aligned with the Australian Curriculum.
Teachers and students are actively engaged in the use of these valuable resources and it is also available for Parents to register and see what their child is working on and gain reports of their progress.

Science Week 2015 at Landsdale
Jessee B with a solar bottle light showing the 'power' of refraction. Used in poorer nations for cheap, renewable energy.
Landsdale’s celebration of Science Week on Tuesday 18th August was a great success with all classes from Years 1-6 enjoying a range of science-related experiments and activities. Students were able to make and take away items related to the 2015 Science Week theme of ‘Making Waves – the science of ’Light’ such as:
- sparkly galaxy mobiles
- sun/earth/moon eclipse models
- Saturn CD planets
- solar-powered windmills (or wind-powered ones)
- 3D glasses
- shadow-puppets and Balinese moving shadow puppets
- periscopes
Other activities they participated in or observed included:
- solar light bottles
- refraction fishing/sticks
- planetarium and sun/earth day night model
- creating electrical circuits with motors and light bulbs
- several stations also had the chance to work on interactive learning objects on the new Ipad Airs
- sun dials
- Light boxes and prisms
- Microscopes
- Exploding volcanoes
- Coding on the Macbooks
- Flipped light secret code tubes
- Magic sand
- Demonstration on Mac of science topic
- Fulcrum operation
- LA 18 students also had a stand of activities
Year 3 students in LA 27 worked very hard to try to quickly learn the science behind their activity as well as organise and run their stand for 3 hours during the day.
Several staff helped to set up and supervise students and a special thanks goes to the following LA 27 parents who came in and gave up their time and even their breaks to work feverishly to get ready for the next group of students: Sally Pellegrini, Ann Green, Nicolette Georgiadis and Nicole Edwards.
Special thanks also to relief teachers Mrs Bin Salleh and Mrs Grinceri, Education Assistant, Mrs Leanne Woods, and also Mr Hayward for setting up and supervising students. Year 6 students were magnificent in setting up and clearing away the stands, making signs and decorating the ‘planetarium’.
We also staged our inaugural Science Fair which was displayed in the Library during the day for all to enjoy. Due to some logistics issues, these were not able to be demonstrated on the day but all students who participated were presented with a Participation Certificate and gift book by Mrs Mattock last Thursday. Next year, we will begin planning for an expanded Science Fair 2016 much earlier and provide more specific guidelines – our goal this year was to gauge the level of student interest and we were very excited at the enthusiasm and participation of our students from Years 2 – 6. Special thanks to Mr Cavallaro for his support and creation of the Science Fair website available on the Landsdale PS website.
Deputy Principal, Mrs Mattock, has been incredibly tireless in her enthusiasm and support of staff and students before, during and after the Science Week period and we thank her enormously for all her time and effort (and the great books and participation certificates).
At 2pm, Alan Benn from Environment House and Commercial and Home Sustainability Assessments set up and demonstrated two Energy bikes. Students, teachers and some parents enjoyed bicycling hard to see if they could power a drill or light up globes! Alan also presented a talk between 3.40pm and 4.20pm about Energy use in the home and how to make savings. Tea, coffee and biscuits and several information sheets were available. If you were unable to attend, you missed the refreshments, but clicking these links will access all the handouts:
- Electrical bills and units
- What does it cost?
- Should I buy a Solar PV power system
Special thanks go to Sally Pellegrini for circulating information about this session on the various school and community Facebook pages and ‘underground’ networks.
Alan is available to provide home and school sustainability audits (water and power) and has a proven record of saving schools thousands of dollars. If you would like to get in touch with Alan, please contact Ella Marrion at ella.marrion@education.wa.edu.au
Kindergarten Enrolments for 2016
The closing period for Kindy enrolments for 2016 was Friday 24th July. If you have forgotten to put your application form in, please come in to the office as soon as possible.
Students Not Returning to Landsdale in 2016
Please let us know if your children currently in Pre-Primary to Year 5 will no longer be attending Landsdale Primary School next year because you are moving or changing schools. We are doing our best to get well organised for a smooth start to 2016 but we rely on your help in this important area. All schools are funded according to our enrolments so it is very important that we plan on accurate enrolment numbers. Families who know they will not be returning to Landsdale Primary School in 2016 are asked to click on the attached link or phone the school.

THE GREAT BOOK BUY DAY – A GREAT SUCCESS!
We would like to say a HUGE thank you to all our students, parents and staff who donated their own books to our Indigenous Literacy “Great Book Buy Day."
It was such a fabulous, fun day with lots of children picking up great books for the cost of a gold coin donation. It was wonderful to see our students getting so excited about their book purchases, book sharing and reading ability. As a result of your generosity, we raised an incredible $1,082.30 for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation to purchase books for children in remote communities all over Australia, who don't have access to great library books and reading books...like our lucky students do!
Thanks to Mrs Alison Belstead who helped us with organising the Sausage Sizzle Lunch, which raised $1,004 to buy new library books and eBooks for our school. Thank you also to our parent volunteers who gave up their time to assist on “The Great Book Buy Day Stall” – Mrs Belinda von Bergheim, Mrs Janelle Willey, Mrs Donna Reid, Mrs Paula Procak and Mrs Johanna DuToit.
Sincere thanks also to Ray White Landsdale who did a terrific job of supplying the sausages and buns for our Sausage Sizzle Lunch. Their efficient and friendly staff cooked over 300 sausages for our students to enjoy. This is an excellent indication of the community spirit that is alive and well in Landsdale. Thank you to Jessica Burnside and her team at Ray White. Parents, please consider supporting Ray White Landsdale for all your real estate agent needs.
The Indigenous Literacy Foundation works to put books into the hands of children and families in remote Indigenous communities across Australia. Over the past four years, they have sent more than 120,000 new, high quality books to over 230 remote communities. The ILF also runs an early literacy project called “Book Buzz,” which puts board books into the hands of babies, toddlers and their families. The Foundation has published and funded more than 40 community books, some of which are translated into the community’s first language.
Thank you to our entire Landsdale school community for supporting this worthy cause.
BOOK WEEK DRESS-UP DAY
Wow! What a fantastic time we all had during Children's Book Week! Thank you to all our students and staff who dressed up for the Book Week Dress-Up Day on Friday 28th August. It was so much fun and also very inspiring to see all the wonderful book character costumes and their related books. The two parades were a great opportunity for students to share their costumes and soak up the atmosphere. Thank you to Mrs Margaret Quirk, MLA for Girrawheen, who judged the winners and presented prizes to them. These children won $20 vouchers to be spent on any issue of Scholastic Book Club between now and the end of the year. Please see Mrs Murray if you have questions about how to claim your prizes. Thank you all for your enthusiastic participation and to all our parents for assisting your children with their costumes.

Faction Athletics Carnival
Congratulations to all the students that participated in the Faction Athletics Carnival last Thursday. With a few minor changes and adjustments to the program, the day proved to be a huge success!
All students tried very hard with the events they participated in and should be very proud of their efforts. Thanks very much to all staff and parents for supporting the children throughout the day – it was great to see.
Many thanks to everybody that assisted on the day and leading up to the event. Thanks to the staff of Landsdale PS for their work in placing students in events, Kingsway Little Athletics Club for their use of timing gates and assistance on the long jumps and distance events. Again, the day could not go ahead without all the assistance from volunteers and last minute helpers, including Gabrielle Vautier, Ashdale Secondary College students, the canteen staff and all their hard work and the P & C for providing some terrific beverages and food and providing some raffles to partake in.
Well done to Grevillea for winning the sportsmanship award. They certainly deserved it this year with their terrific cheering, sportsmanship and attentiveness whilst briefly in their faction bay. In saying all that, all factions should be very proud of their behaviour and sportsmanship in this year’s sports carnival.
Hovea, for the first time in a number of years, held the championship shield. It’s fantastic to seem them winning again. Well done, you deserve your victory.

Host Families Needed in January 2016
OPPORTUNITY FOR STUDENTS TO EXPERIENCE ANOTHER CULTURE, MAKE NEW FRIENDS AND IMPROVE THEIR LANGUAGE STUDIES AT HOME
In January 2016 we will be receiving exchange students from Argentina, Bolivia, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland, Sweden and the USA. Our new arrivals will live with a host family and attend a local school for 3, 5 or 10 months. As we plan for their arrival, we are keen to hear from suitable families who might be interested to host a student.
Host families come in all shapes and sizes, backgrounds and ages. Hosting an exchange student can be a truly rewarding experience. It allows a family to experience a foreign culture first hand, be exposed to a new language and pass on a bit of our own culture. They might even make a friend for life!
All students have at least basic levels of English, would attend a school in your local area and live the life of a local. Below is a sample of students who will be arriving.
For 15 year old Canadian Meghan, coming to Australia and broadening her horizons is an exciting prospect. Whilst here, Meghan is hoping to continue her love of sports and being active and would be more than happy to participate in community sports. Describing herself as wanting to work in the field of Science one day, Meghan's also enjoys reading and is happy to contribute to the household chores.
Rosalyn is a 14 year old student from Denmark who likes to play the guitar and sing, in fact she says that her host family will hear her singing a lot. By coming to Australia, she hopes to improve her English and become more independent. Rosalyn enjoys kickboxing and would like to continue this whilst in Australia. Describing herself as a people person, her family say that Rosalyn will make you laugh.
Fifteen year old French student Ploum, playing piano, listening to music, doing theatre, photography and spending time with her family and friends is what occupies most of her time. Ploum is looking forward to discovering the Australian way of life and developing her English language skills.
Alice is a 16 year old Italian student who enjoys studying, going to the gym and spending time with her family and friends. Alice has already spent time abroad in Ireland and England and loves to travel. She is looking forward to coming to Australia to integrate with locals and learn about the culture. Whilst here, she would like to play sport, go to the beach and see a few different Australian cities.
Savannah or Savy to her friends is a 16 year old student from the USA who is looking forward to challenging herself by moving to Australia and embracing the culture. Savannah says that she is adventurous but cautious and values honesty, respect and kindness. Her parents describe her as responsible, positive and mature. Savannah is looking forward to making new friends and hopes to snorkel, go to the zoo and see museums whilst here.
You can view more profiles of students arriving soon from our website. Please note that this is just a handful of the students who will be arriving.
The Stuart family were thrilled to have Danish student Simon stay with them for 8 months. As commented by host mum Victoria, "it has been a fantastic experience. Simon has been an awesome role model to our two young children, he has been like an older brother to them." Victoria continues, "the experience has benefited us too, as it has allowed us to have greater free time and flexibility as a family. I was very impressed with Simon, as within the first couple of days he was here, he asked what should his chores be?"
"Just give it a go, the benefits will surprise you. I highly recommend it", mentions Australian Host Dad Andrew, from the Stuart family. "Not only do your children benefit, but the benefits exist for the parents too." Host Dad, Andrew continues, "We are so lucky to have Simon come stay with us. He is a fantastic student, easy going and not very demanding. He has fitted into the Australian way of life so easy. He even obtained his Bronze Medallion. We are so proud of Simon."
The Stuart family talk about their hosting experience further and discuss the ups and downs of hosting, why they hosted and the benefits of being a volunteer host parent. Please check out their video here . You can also watch a selection of videos of the Cain family from our host family testimonials page on our website.

You can find out more about our organisation by visiting www.studentexchange.org.au.
If students, families or language teachers have any questions about hosting an exchange student or would like to view profiles of students arriving from other countries, they can call our office on 1300 135 331 or visit our website. Our staff members will be happy to discuss which student might be best suited to their family. No obligation.
