22 October 2015
From the Principal
Dear Families,
All families are welcomed back to the final term of the 2015 school year. It has been a great start to Term Four! Already the Year 6’s are enjoying their camp. They were very excited to be there and all are thoroughly enjoying the camp, although I think they will be very tired when they return on Friday. A big thank you to Mr Hayward, Miss Screigh, Mr Rayner and Miss Harris for volunteering their time to ensure this is a successful experience.
I would like to express a particular welcome to new families to our school. It was fantastic to see so many parents attend the Kindy Orientation on Wednesday with many new Landsdale Parents as well as some familiar faces. We will be working with the P&C and School Board to find ways to ensure the Kindy families feel every bit a part of Landsdale as the P-6 families do. It would be really helpful to have some of the Kindy parents active on the P&C or the School Board to assist us with this goal. One of the ways to ensure you have a satisfying life according to Positive Psychology is to be involved with worthwhile community endeavours, and supporting your child’s learning environment through working with the P&C certainly is worthwhile! If you are interested please come along to the next P&C meeting on Tuesday 27th October in the staffroom at the school.
Students are all working with enthusiasm and the end of the year will approach very rapidly. There are many activities during the term and families are urged to be positive and encouraging with their children to give them confidence and encourage them to do their personal best.
Swimming for PP, Year 2 and Year 4 students starts on the 9th November and finishes on the 20th November and for the Year 1, 3 and 5 students swimming starts on the 23rd November and finishes on the 4th December.
Just a reminder that on Friday 30th October the staff are involved in professional learning activities on our School Development Day. Students do not attend on this day.
I hope the term is a productive and happy one for you all.
Kind regards,
Leanne White

Class Placements for 2016
Class placements for 2016 will be determined in staff meetings in Term 4 once we know exactly what staff we will have for the 2016 academic year. If you have any educational concerns/requirements about your child for next year that we should know about, please place these concerns/requirements in an email that is forwarded straight to me using the attached link or drop a letter into the office addressed to the principal marked “Private and Confidential”.

After School Transition Session
We are offering a transition session after school on Wednesday 25th November.
We are going to be opening the classrooms for parents and students to visit. The rooms will be open so you both can see some of the things that happen in that year level. There will be teachers in the classrooms, but at this stage staffing hasn’t been completed for 2016, so the staff that are there may not be in that year level next year.
We encourage you to take time to move through the different spaces so you and your child begin to become familiar with the learning environments for the following year.
Students and parents from Pre-primary are invited to move through the following rooms which will be the Year One classrooms in 2016.
LA 20, LA 21, LA 22, LA 23 & LA 24 from 2.45pm-3.15pm
Students and parents from Kindergarten are invited to move through the following rooms at the main school, which will be the Pre-primary classrooms in 2016.
LA 1, LA 2, LA 3, LA 4 & LA 5 from 3.00pm-3.30pm
Students and parents going into Kindergarten in 2016 are invited to move through the following rooms which will be the Kindergarten classrooms in 2016.
At the Annexe (Trentham Way) in the classroom that you have been allocated - Bilby, Joey or Possum (the classrooms are clearly labelled) 3.00pm-3.30pm
If you have any questions please contact your child’s classroom teacher or the office.
Apple Parent Funded 1-1 Laptop Program 2016
Apple recognises outstanding schools and programs worldwide for innovation, leadership, and educational excellence. Landsdale has been recognised as having a Distinguished Program since 2013. One of the reasons for the recognition is the strong community engagement with the 1-1 laptop program. The program has always been a partnership between the parents and the school and is steered not only by strong staff leadership but also through the parent steering committee and feedback from parents and the community.
This year we have been through some events that have impacted on the program. One was our major upgrade to the latest Standard Operating Environment for the Department of Education. Along with a major infrastructure upgrade this included a complete change to the way our network operated and how we connected to the wireless. Through this process the staff and students have been amazingly resilient and have achieved some wonderful things using their laptops. The depth of learning demonstrated at some of the senior assemblies through the creative use of technology has been outstanding. The introduction of coding and STEAM classes this year has added an important dimension to the use of the laptops, one of learning how to apply skills to the creation and not just the consumption of digital content. This is another element to our excellent program, one of great staff providing an innovative and rigorous teaching and learning environment.
It is going to be an exciting year in 2016 especially for those students entering the program for the first time in Year Four. As Year Three students they have been using iPads quite extensively so they should have an easy transition to using macbooks and extending their knowledge and skills.
One hold up to our normal start to planning the next year’s program has been the changes in pricing from Apple which has delayed the opening of the 1-1 Ordering Portal for a while. It has now opened, however the pricing on it at the moment is likely to change again. The Parent Funded model is supported by Apple through exclusive pricing that is made available to parents who are participating in a 1-1 Program with their school. This pricing is available to us through our partnership with Winthrop Australia who provide a purchasing portal for parents to order their laptops online. Winthrop also provide a free onsite technical service where any problems with student laptops are logged with them and a technician comes out to the school to fix the laptops purchased through the portal. We have been waiting for the updated pricing to be set so that parents can begin ordering machines for next year. Winthrop have now updated the portal with a special pricing which is available until the end of October. Parents are of course welcome to purchase or lease the laptops from any source they choose and whenever you choose, however we urge you to check that the 3 year full AppleCare warranty is included in the price when you are comparing.
https://portal.winaust.com.au/forms/view/408
This link is normally on the website however we have been experiencing problems with the site and are waiting for the site to be checked and approved. When it is back up you can order anytime you would like however pricing is set to rise.
For more information we will have our first Parent Information Session for the 2016 Year 4 1-1 Laptop Program on Monday 26th October. I realise this is quite short notice however with the pricing due to change at the end of October we wanted to give parents the information prior to that so if they choose they have the opportunity to purchase at the lower price. We will be conducting more Parent Sessions during the term.
Come along to the Parent Steering Committee for the Apple 1-1 Laptop Program and help us choose, plan for and implement the best program for your kids! The Steering Committee has been a vital part of the Program. They are involved in making the decision of what platform and device to use, ensuring the parents concerns and views are heard and guiding the implementation.
At the moment we have no Year 3 or 4 Parents on the committee and we would really love to have input from parents from all the year levels that are involved (or about to be) in the program. Please contact me if you are interested. We usually meet only once and occasionally twice a term.

Students Not Returning to Landsdale in 2016
Please let us know if your children currently in Pre-Primary to Year 5 will no longer be attending Landsdale Primary School next year because you are moving or changing schools. We are doing our best to get well organised for a smooth start to 2016 but we rely on your help in this important area. All schools are funded according to our enrolments so it is very important that we plan on accurate enrolment numbers. Families who know they will not be returning to Landsdale Primary School in 2016 are asked to click on the attached link or phone the school.

Library News
Term 4 Library Book Borrowing Re-Opens
Welcome back everyone! This is our final term of book borrowing for 2015, so make sure you get to the Library every week to borrow and read some of our great new books. This is a 10 week term, so our closing date for return of all books borrowed this term will be FRIDAY 4th DECEMBER 2015.
Lending Rules
Just a reminder that students may borrow two books for a period of two weeks. Books may be renewed if not required by other readers. Overdue notices are sent to classrooms every week. Please remind your child to return his/her library books by the due date. Invoices are sent to parents for any library books that have not been returned after one month. Library bags must be used for borrowing. These are available from the Uniform Shop and department stores. Children can also use shopping bag or pillowcase as a library bag.
Unreturned Loans from Term 3 and October Holidays
We have over 200 library books still outstanding from Term 3 and October holiday loans. Please remind your child to return or renew these books immediately. Holiday loans were due back on Monday 12th October. Invoices will be sent out for all unreturned library books on Friday 23rd October. This is a time-consuming and resource-wasting process, so please help us avoid sending your family an invoice for the replacement cost of the book, by getting it back to the Library before the close of school on Friday 23rd October. Renewals can be done by Mrs Murray at any time during the day.
Scholastic Book Club Issue 7 Closing Date
The second last issue of Book Club (Issue 7) for 2015 closes this Friday 23rd October @ 9am. Please send your completed orders to the blue box in the Front Office by 9am on the closing date. Late orders cannot be accepted. Parents may also order online using the LOOP platform:

P&C Scholastic Book Fair Coming Soon!
The 2015 P&C Book Fair will be held in Week 4, from Monday 2nd November until Friday 6th November, in the Library. This is always a popular event for the children and an important fundraiser for the P&C to help us purchase books for the Library. So save your $$$ and watch this space for more details.
Choir
Well done to the Choir students who participated in the WAGSMS (Western Australia Government Schools Music Society) concert held at the Crown Theatre, Burswood recently. They performed a nonsense song called 'Dang a Rang a Dang Do' and an arrangement of 'Any Dream Will Do’ which saw Joseph’s Technicolour Dreamcoat open up behind the choir at the end! I was very proud of the choir; the singing was just sensational. Well done to all of those students who participated. I’m sure the experience of performing on such a large stage in front of an audience of 2000 was worth while!
It is now possible to purchase photos that were taken on the night. To do this you need to visit:

You will also need to register using your email address.
I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Sharon Dyball, Lisa Harris, Susan Hay-Hendry, Tracey Higgins, Margaret Quirk (VIP guest) and Harald Lewarth (Drums) for their support. A big thank you to all parents for your organisation which ensured the event ran smoothly.
The choir will perform at the annual Carols in the Park on 11th December.

Host Families Needed in January 2016
OPPORTUNITY FOR STUDENTS TO EXPERIENCE ANOTHER CULTURE, MAKE NEW FRIENDS AND IMPROVE THEIR LANGUAGE STUDIES AT HOME
In January 2016 we will be receiving exchange students from Argentina, Bolivia, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland, Sweden and the USA. Our new arrivals will live with a host family and attend a local school for 3, 5 or 10 months. As we plan for their arrival, we are keen to hear from suitable families who might be interested to host a student.
Host families come in all shapes and sizes, backgrounds and ages. Hosting an exchange student can be a truly rewarding experience. It allows a family to experience a foreign culture first hand, be exposed to a new language and pass on a bit of our own culture. They might even make a friend for life!
All students have at least basic levels of English, would attend a school in your local area and live the life of a local. Below is a sample of students who will be arriving.
For 15 year old Canadian Meghan, coming to Australia and broadening her horizons is an exciting prospect. Whilst here, Meghan is hoping to continue her love of sports and being active and would be more than happy to participate in community sports. Describing herself as wanting to work in the field of Science one day, Meghan's also enjoys reading and is happy to contribute to the household chores.
Rosalyn is a 14 year old student from Denmark who likes to play the guitar and sing, in fact she says that her host family will hear her singing a lot. By coming to Australia, she hopes to improve her English and become more independent. Rosalyn enjoys kickboxing and would like to continue this whilst in Australia. Describing herself as a people person, her family say that Rosalyn will make you laugh.
Fifteen year old French student Ploum, playing piano, listening to music, doing theatre, photography and spending time with her family and friends is what occupies most of her time. Ploum is looking forward to discovering the Australian way of life and developing her English language skills.
Alice is a 16 year old Italian student who enjoys studying, going to the gym and spending time with her family and friends. Alice has already spent time abroad in Ireland and England and loves to travel. She is looking forward to coming to Australia to integrate with locals and learn about the culture. Whilst here, she would like to play sport, go to the beach and see a few different Australian cities.
Savannah or Savy to her friends is a 16 year old student from the USA who is looking forward to challenging herself by moving to Australia and embracing the culture. Savannah says that she is adventurous but cautious and values honesty, respect and kindness. Her parents describe her as responsible, positive and mature. Savannah is looking forward to making new friends and hopes to snorkel, go to the zoo and see museums whilst here.
You can view more profiles of students arriving soon from our website. Please note that this is just a handful of the students who will be arriving.
The Stuart family were thrilled to have Danish student Simon stay with them for 8 months. As commented by host mum Victoria, "it has been a fantastic experience. Simon has been an awesome role model to our two young children, he has been like an older brother to them." Victoria continues, "the experience has benefited us too, as it has allowed us to have greater free time and flexibility as a family. I was very impressed with Simon, as within the first couple of days he was here, he asked what should his chores be?"
"Just give it a go, the benefits will surprise you. I highly recommend it", mentions Australian Host Dad Andrew, from the Stuart family. "Not only do your children benefit, but the benefits exist for the parents too." Host Dad, Andrew continues, "We are so lucky to have Simon come stay with us. He is a fantastic student, easy going and not very demanding. He has fitted into the Australian way of life so easy. He even obtained his Bronze Medallion. We are so proud of Simon."
The Stuart family talk about their hosting experience further and discuss the ups and downs of hosting, why they hosted and the benefits of being a volunteer host parent. Please check out their video here. You can also watch a selection of videos of the Cain family from our host family testimonials page on our website.
Student Exchange Australia New Zealand is a not-for-profit organisation that is registered with all state and territory Departments of Education around Australia and with the Ministry of Education in NZ. You can find out more about our organisation by visiting www.studentexchange.org.au.
If students, families or language teachers have any questions about hosting an exchange student or would like to view profiles of students arriving from other countries, they can call our office on 1300 135 331 or visit our website. Our staff members will be happy to discuss which student might be best suited to their family. No obligation.
