5 November 2015
From the Principal
Thank you to all the parents who are contributing to their child’s love of reading and at the same time helping to raise funds for the school Library. The annual Bookfair is underway and forms an important part of making sure our Library has new books and resources for the students to enjoy. Thank you to the P&C, in particular Amanda Ferguson, for coordinating the Bookfair and to the wonderful parents who are assisting in the mornings and after school.
The Year Four parent funded 1-1 Program had the first parent information session recently and it was very well attended by parents across the cluster. The 1-1 Program is a cluster initiative and all Primary Schools in the cluster and the Secondary College offer the program. In the Primary Schools it begins in Year 4 and continues through to Year 6, the College begins their program in Year 7. The next parent information session is on Tuesday 17th November for anyone who missed the first session. For further information or to order your child’s laptop, visit our website.
Just like the real world, the Internet can be a wonderful place full of amazing information, people and ideas. However, just like the real world it also has its dangers, inappropriate people and misinformation.
In both worlds I believe the good outweighs the bad and with care and education both can be safe to navigate.
Teachers are continually teaching students sound educational and safe practices on the Internet and monitoring student laptops often. For instance the Year 6 students are exploring a series of learning objects about being safe online. If you have a child in those classes it would be a good time to talk to them about what they are learning.
Apart from the significant educational advantage the students gain from having their own laptop, the education they receive around the ethical and safe use of technology while at this age will stand them in good stead for the more risk taking years as teenagers. The knowledge they have will enable them to make informed decisions, and hopefully enable them to make the right ones for a positive digital footprint. There are many sites that assist parents, teachers and students to understand and find support for the many issues that may arise. The eSafety site is a great place to start: https://esafety.gov.au/
This week we had our annual “Thank You” morning tea for all the parents and community members who give their time and support to help our school. Their contribution to the school is a significant part of the reason Landsdale Primary School is so successful and we appreciate their support greatly. I especially would like to thank the community members who serve on the P&C and the School Board. It was great to see some new faces at the last P&C meeting, the more the merrier and the lighter the load on everyone. Thank you to all of you.
Kind regards,
Leanne White

After School Transition Session
We are offering a transition session after school on Wednesday 25th November.
We are going to be opening the classrooms for parents and students to visit. The rooms will be open so you both can see some of the things that happen in that year level. There will be teachers in the classrooms, but at this stage staffing hasn’t been completed for 2016, so the staff that are there may not be in that year level next year.
We encourage you to take time to move through the different spaces so you and your child begin to become familiar with the learning environments for the following year.
Students and parents from Pre-primary are invited to move through the following rooms which will be the Year One classrooms in 2016.
LA 20, LA 21, LA 22, LA 23 & LA 24 from 2.45pm-3.15pm
Students and parents from Kindergarten are invited to move through the following rooms at the main school, which will be the Pre-primary classrooms in 2016.

Students Not Returning to Landsdale in 2016
Please let us know if your children currently in Pre-Primary to Year 5 will no longer be attending Landsdale Primary School next year because you are moving or changing schools. We are doing our best to get well organised for a smooth start to 2016 but we rely on your help in this important area. All schools are funded according to our enrolments so it is very important that we plan on accurate enrolment numbers. Families who know they will not be returning to Landsdale Primary School in 2016 are asked to click on the attached link or phone the school.

Hot Shots Tennis Championships
Congratulations to all the students that competed in the inaugural Hot Shots Tennis Championships last Thursday at the State Tennis Centre. Landsdale was one of only six schools invited for this event and all the students performed admirably. Our top team, Landsdale Red, was unlucky not to get through to their final to play for a trip to Melbourne as they drew 2 and won 2 rubbers. But well done all Landsdale students and Tennis Australia for a fantastic modified concept for students to play tennis. We look forward to be being part of the event in the years to ahead.
Hot Shot Tennis t-shirts
All students in years 1-6 should have received their Hot Shots tennis shirts. Unfortunately I cannot change or swap shirts as I have only received one shirt for every student (around 800) and to swap shirts would mean someone else would receive their incorrect size. You may be able to get some more tennis goodies though by registering as a player at the following website hotshots .tennis .com.au/ claim.
I am still waiting to receive size 4 shirts for the Kindy and Pre-Primary students.

YEAR 4 Students ONLY
Expression of Interest in the Department of Education’s (SIM) School of Instrumental Music Program for 2016
Dear Parents / Guardians YEAR 4 only.
Landsdale Primary School is included in the Department of Education’s Instrumental Music Tuition Scheme. Year 4 students are currently being considered for tuition in a selective program with limited vacancies. It is important that both you and your child, fully understand the commitment, before deciding to indicate interest in being considered.
At Landsdale Primary School, the instruments on offer are CLASSICAL GUITAR, CLARINET, and BRASS - TRUMPET/TROMBONE.
Students are given weekly lessons during school hours in small groups by a qualified teacher / musician employed through the Department of Education’s Instrumental Music School Services (SIM). There is no charge for tuition, which is conservatively valued at $1,500 per annum. In order to make progress, daily home practice is also essential. Parents have a vitally important and active role to play in encouraging their child to make this commitment. As the child progresses, practice time will increase. When ready, s/he will be expected to participate in an instrumental ensemble that rehearses out of school hours and undertakes performances in the school and community, often also out of school hours.
Instrumental music skills do not bloom overnight! They are built carefully and steadily over a number of years, and success in the program requires sustained commitment by both children and parents.
Learning a Musical Instrument:
http://www.sim.iinet.net.au/pdf/Learning_a_Musical_Instrument.pdf
It is expected that students who are offered a position are prepared to consider commitment until at least the end of Year 10, and will plan to continue music studies at a secondary school that offers the instrumental music program for their instrument. In many cases, the instrumental teachers in primary schools also teach in the area secondary school, ensuring continuity of instruction.
Please note that every endeavour is made to provide ongoing tuition at your local secondary school but it may not be possible for all instruments or all students.
Final selection of students will be made by the school in consultation with instrumental teachers. Selected students will receive a formal letter of offer.
Selection criteria are:
- performance results on a musical aptitude indicator - test
- student interest in learning the instrument offered;
- parental commitment and support;
- musical ability as demonstrated in class music lessons;
- general ability in class, consistency of school work, attitude towards homework;
- physical suitability for the instrument on offer
If you would like your child to be considered for this program please email me your expression of interest to: andrew.angel@education.wa.edu.au
Further information can also be obtained by visiting the SIM website at:
http://www.sim.iinet.net.au/
Many thanks

Primary Band Workshop
Congratulations to all our SIM Clarinet and Brass instrumental students who participated in the Primary Band Workshop held at Ashdale Secondary College last Thursday 29th October 2015. The students spent the day in sectional rehearsals learning to perform pieces that they played in a concert for parents at the end of the day. A fantastic job! Well done!
P&C News – President’s Report
I would like to thank everyone that came along to our last P&C meeting, our largest meeting for this year, it was great to welcome some new faces and gave us the ability to discuss many topics relating to Landsdale Primary, and importantly, approve the funding for our school disco, which will be held on Friday 20th November (pre-sale flyers should have come home this week, please let us know if you didn’t receive one…).
A new initiative we are going to try in Week 7 is ‘Cash for Clothing’. So if you’re thinking about having a clean out of the wardrobe, please hang on to those items, we will have a bin on site at school for you to place any wearable items. These items will be sent to Africa and the school will get paid for them. Relevant items include: Clothing, Shoes, Belts, Handbags, Hats and Manchester. Stay tuned for an update on the exact date in Week 7.
Another new initiative going forward involves a relationship with the ANZ Bank. Should you (or anybody you know) be looking to apply to ANZ for an eligible home loan, then we have a flyer that you can present at the same time, which in the event the loan is authorised, Landsdale Primary receives a commission. Forms are available at the front office or you can contact Melinda Fuller, ANZ Home and Investment Lending Manager on Melinda.Fuller@anz.com .
If you or your child are interested in getting involved with school banking, the Commonwealth Bank will be sending a representative on Thursday November 12 to sign up new bankers. This is a great opportunity to organize an account for your child without the hassle of having to go down to your local bank …
Our next P&C meeting will be held on Tuesday 24th November at 7.30pm in the Landsdale Primary staffroom, if you’re not sure where that is…walk past the school library towards the office and you will find the staffroom, you will see a brick wall in front of it with some tables and chairs. This will be our last meeting for the year, and amongst other things, we will be discussing the fundraising timetable for 2016. Any input you may have as our parent body, is welcome. Feel free to come along or email us on landsdaleprimarypandc@yahoo.com.au
Finally, if you haven’t had a chance to swing by the library to take a look at the Book Fair, please do. Sales benefit the school library and with Christmas fast approaching, you can find some great stocking stuffers there.
Regards
Kendra McDonald

Walk to School Day
Our Walk to School day on Tues 20th October was a great success. A big thank you to all the families who took part and walked into the school grounds on the day. As organisers Kristy and I were so excited to see everyone participating by walking, riding and scootering into school. A huge thank you to the Year 6’s who helped by handing out stickers to everyone at all our school entrances and to Alison in the canteen for providing Icy Poles for a lunch time treat.

Host Families Needed in January 2016
OPPORTUNITY FOR STUDENTS TO EXPERIENCE ANOTHER CULTURE, MAKE NEW FRIENDS AND IMPROVE THEIR LANGUAGE STUDIES AT HOME
In January 2016 we will be receiving exchange students from Argentina, Bolivia, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland, Sweden and the USA. Our new arrivals will live with a host family and attend a local school for 3, 5 or 10 months. As we plan for their arrival, we are keen to hear from suitable families who might be interested to host a student.
Host families come in all shapes and sizes, backgrounds and ages. Hosting an exchange student can be a truly rewarding experience. It allows a family to experience a foreign culture first hand, be exposed to a new language and pass on a bit of our own culture. They might even make a friend for life!
All students have at least basic levels of English, would attend a school in your local area and live the life of a local. Below is a sample of students who will be arriving.
For 15 year old Canadian Meghan, coming to Australia and broadening her horizons is an exciting prospect. Whilst here, Meghan is hoping to continue her love of sports and being active and would be more than happy to participate in community sports. Describing herself as wanting to work in the field of Science one day, Meghan's also enjoys reading and is happy to contribute to the household chores.
Rosalyn is a 14 year old student from Denmark who likes to play the guitar and sing, in fact she says that her host family will hear her singing a lot. By coming to Australia, she hopes to improve her English and become more independent. Rosalyn enjoys kickboxing and would like to continue this whilst in Australia. Describing herself as a people person, her family say that Rosalyn will make you laugh.
Fifteen year old French student Ploum, playing piano, listening to music, doing theatre, photography and spending time with her family and friends is what occupies most of her time. Ploum is looking forward to discovering the Australian way of life and developing her English language skills.
Alice is a 16 year old Italian student who enjoys studying, going to the gym and spending time with her family and friends. Alice has already spent time abroad in Ireland and England and loves to travel. She is looking forward to coming to Australia to integrate with locals and learn about the culture. Whilst here, she would like to play sport, go to the beach and see a few different Australian cities.
Savannah or Savy to her friends is a 16 year old student from the USA who is looking forward to challenging herself by moving to Australia and embracing the culture. Savannah says that she is adventurous but cautious and values honesty, respect and kindness. Her parents describe her as responsible, positive and mature. Savannah is looking forward to making new friends and hopes to snorkel, go to the zoo and see museums whilst here.
You can view more profiles of students arriving soon from our website. Please note that this is just a handful of the students who will be arriving.
The Stuart family were thrilled to have Danish student Simon stay with them for 8 months. As commented by host mum Victoria, "it has been a fantastic experience. Simon has been an awesome role model to our two young children, he has been like an older brother to them." Victoria continues, "the experience has benefited us too, as it has allowed us to have greater free time and flexibility as a family. I was very impressed with Simon, as within the first couple of days he was here, he asked what should his chores be?"
"Just give it a go, the benefits will surprise you. I highly recommend it", mentions Australian Host Dad Andrew, from the Stuart family. "Not only do your children benefit, but the benefits exist for the parents too." Host Dad, Andrew continues, "We are so lucky to have Simon come stay with us. He is a fantastic student, easy going and not very demanding. He has fitted into the Australian way of life so easy. He even obtained his Bronze Medallion. We are so proud of Simon."
The Stuart family talk about their hosting experience further and discuss the ups and downs of hosting, why they hosted and the benefits of being a volunteer host parent. You can also watch a selection of videos of the Cain family from our host family testimonials page on our website.
