19 November 2015

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Families,

After the events in Europe recently, you may find that your children want to discuss how they feel about it. Your attitudes and emotions are what they will pick up on most. Try to be measured and calm in your responses to their questions. Remind them that you, their teachers and the government are doing all they can to make sure everyone is safe. Try to limit the discussion and time they watch the media coverage of the events while not ignoring their need to discuss it. Focus on the people who are helping and communities pulling together to overcome adversity.

Some articles on talking to kids about traumatic news might help:

How to cope with traumatic news- an illustrated guide - Kidsmatter

Many thanks to the P&C for a magnificent effort with our Book Fair. Particular thanks to the band of volunteers who gave so much of their time. The school Disco will be on Friday 20th November so more work for our wonderful P&C volunteers.

This time of year we think of those who need a little help over Christmas Time. We have placed a box in the office for donations of non perishable food and gifts for the Salvation Army Christmas Appeal. Thank you to all who donate.

Swimming for the PP, Yr2 and Yr4 students finishes on Friday and the students have been great in their efforts to Learn to swim or improve their swimming and water safety skills. Starting Monday next week the Year 1, 3's and 5's get their turn for swimming lessons.

Thank you to the Parents who are sending in their class placement requests. Please remember that the educational requests and concerns will be considered, however there are many factors to consider and all concerned work towards effective placements for all students.

School Photos

The School Board met with the owner of Photo Hendriks and have resolved that if you feel that your photos were not satisfactory, the return period has been extended to the end of the year. Please contact Photo Hendriks directly on 9361 3206 if you have a concern.

With kind regards,
Leanne White

Class Placements for 2016

Class placements for 2016 will be determined in staff meetings in Term 4 once we know exactly what staff we will have for the 2016 academic year. If you have any educational concerns/requirements about your child for next year that we should know about, please place these concerns/requirements in an email that is forwarded straight to me using the attached link or drop a letter into the office addressed to the principal marked "Private and Confidential" by Friday 27th November, 2015.

2016 1-1 Laptop Program

Thank you to the parents who have already purchased a MacBook Air for their child ready for the 2016 year. While we welcome you all to our Apple Distinguished Program, we would like to begin all students together at the start of the school year.

As such Year 3 students do not bring in their laptops until the start of 2016 when they begin Year 4.

If your child is in Year 4-6 now and you have purchased a laptop for them, they can bring it to school immediately.

Thank you to the parents who attended our second Parent Information Session on Tuesday. We will hold an "Introduction to Macbook Basics" workshop Monday 14th December so that you will know how to manage your child's laptop and help them learn the basics over the holidays. If you wish to purchase your child's laptop you may do so at any time this year or next.

In partnership with Winthrop Australia, we have negotiated an offer that we believe is very advantageous to parents in terms of price, warranty and onsite technical servicing if purchased through Winthrop. You are of course free to choose to purchase elsewhere and bring the laptop to school to have it imaged with the settings and software needed for the year. The Winthrop Portal to order your Macbook Air is:

https://portal.winaust.com.au/forms/view/408

In keeping with Landsdale's vision of embedding technology, the One to One program enables students to learn the important skills that are essential to maximise their potential in a 21st Century classroom and workplace. They have, at point of need, access to information, applications and global experiences that enable deeper learning at home and at school.

The Apple laptops are particularly well suited to the education environment because they are loaded with software and applications that are great for getting students to extend their thinking and create innovative projects. They allow teachers to deliver engaging lessons with more students involved in each learning opportunity. The laptops have excellent options for security and parental control over what their child is accessing and when.

Normally there is lots of information and FAQ's to assist you on our website, unfortunately it has been compromised and we have been unable at this stage to fix it. We are working on a permanent solution that will mean a new and improved website coming! In the meantime we will ensure there is lots of parent communication through our facebook, twitter, text messages and newsletter.

We Need Your Help

If you have any unused or obsolete iPhone 4 or iPod charging cables lying around at home or your office, can you please drop them in to the school's office. They would be very gratefully received.

Kindergarten Enrolments for 2016

The closing period for Kindy enrolments for 2016 has passed. If you have forgotten to put your application form in, please come in to the office as soon as possible.

Students Not Returning to Landsdale in 2016

Please let us know if your children currently in Pre-Primary to Year 5 will no longer be attending Landsdale Primary School next year because you are moving or changing schools. We are doing our best to get well organised for a smooth start to 2016 but we rely on your help in this important area. All schools are funded according to our enrolments so it is very important that we plan on accurate enrolment numbers. Families who know they will not be returning to Landsdale Primary School in 2016 are asked to click on the attached link or phone the school.

Book Fair Bonanza

Our 2015 Book Fair was an outstanding success! Students, staff and parents really enjoyed browsing through and buying books for the whole week of Book Fair. There is always a buzz of excitement in the Library when the Book Fair is happening. Thank you to everyone in our school community who supported the Library by purchasing items from the Book Fair. Special thanks and congratulations go to Mrs Amanda Ferguson for organising and running the event. She was well supported by the P&C Book Fair Committee and many parent volunteers. Without this commitment, the Book Fair could not take place. During the week, the Book Fair raised an amazing $5,416. With 35% of this total being returned to the Library in commission, this means that we now have $1,895 worth of new books in the Library from the Book Fair shelves. Mrs Murray is now processing these books and hopes to have them on the shelves as soon as they are catalogued and covered. The students will be very excited to borrow many of the titles they saw on display at the Book Fair.

Scholastic Book Club Issue 8 - Closing Soon

P&C President's Update

As Term 4 draws to a close, just a quick thank you once more to all those wonderful parents who have supported the P&C this year, your help has been truly appreciated.

The School Disco is on this Friday, so if you haven't managed to buy your tickets yet, take your money along to the canteen…ticket prices increase to $6 on the night at the door.

A gentle reminder that our next P&C meeting will be held on Tuesday 24th November at 7.30pm in the Landsdale Primary staffroom. This will be our last meeting for the year, and amongst other things, we will be discussing the fundraising timetable for 2016. Any input you may have as our parent body, is welcome. Feel free to come along or email us your ideas at landsdaleprimarypandc@yahoo.com.au. For those that do attend, remember to bring a plate of something yummy for us all to enjoy as we celebrate the year that was!

Thanks
Kendra McDonald
