3 December 2015
From the Principal
Dear Parents and Families,
The end of the year is fast approaching and the staff and students are working hard to finish the year on a productive and positive note. Making sure your child gets the right amount of sleep at this time of year is important as they can tend to tire with all the activities of end of year. With the weather heating up and many activities being outside towards the end of the term, please talk to your children about drinking lots of water and wearing hats.
This Friday afternoon the Year 6 students will test their skills in Speedball, Catch the Flag and Tag Rugby when participating in the Cluster Friendly at Kingsway Sporting Complex. The students from Ashdale, Madeley and Landsdale will be mixed to form teams with students from all the schools. It will be great for the majority of them to get to know each other in preparation for their entry into Ashdale Secondary College next year.
Swimming classes have once again been very successful and our students were very well behaved and enjoyed the experience. Swimming finishes on Friday.
The Year 6 Graduation is on Wednesday 16th December at 9.00 am. The Graduation will be followed by a morning tea in the senior block (Quokka Cove). Reports will be distributed to all of the students on Graduation Day. Kindy reports may go home earlier depending on their session times that week.
2016 Personal Requirements lists were sent home with students earlier this term. If you have not received a copy please contact the office. Orders must be placed online to Campion by Friday 18th December 2015 to guarantee free delivery before Term 1 2016.

Please see the attached articles for your information.
2016 1-1 Laptop Program
Thank you to the parents who have already purchased a MacBook Air for their child ready for the 2016 year. While we welcome you all to our Apple Distinguished Program, we would like to begin all students together at the start of the school year.
As such Year 3 students do not bring in their laptops until the start of 2016 when they begin Year 4.
If your child is in Year 4-6 now and you have purchased a laptop for them, they can bring it to school immediately.
Thank you to the parents who attended our second Parent Information Session on Tuesday. We will hold an “Introduction to Macbook Basics” workshop on Monday 14th December at 4.30pm so that you will know how to manage your child’s laptop and help them learn the basics over the holidays. If you wish to purchase your child’s laptop you may do so at any time this year or next.
In partnership with Winthrop Australia, we have negotiated an offer that we believe is very advantageous to parents in terms of price, warranty and onsite technical servicing if purchased through Winthrop. You are of course free to choose to purchase elsewhere and bring the laptop to school to have it imaged with the settings and software needed for the year. The Winthrop Portal to order your Macbook Air is: https://portal.winaust.com.au/forms/view/408
In keeping with Landsdale’s vision of embedding technology, the One to One program enables students to learn the important skills that are essential to maximise their potential in a 21st Century classroom and workplace. They have, at point of need, access to information, applications and global experiences that enable deeper learning at home and at school.
The Apple laptops are particularly well suited to the education environment because they are loaded with software and applications that are great for getting students to extend their thinking and create innovative projects. They allow teachers to deliver engaging lessons with more students involved in each learning opportunity. The laptops have excellent options for security and parental control over what their child is accessing and when.
Normally there is lots of information and FAQ’s to assist you on our website, unfortunately it has been compromised and we have been unable at this stage to fix it. We are working on a permanent solution that will mean a new and improved website coming! In the meantime we will ensure there is lots of parent communication through our facebook, twitter, text messages and newsletter.
We Need Your Help
If you have any unused or obsolete iPhone 4 or iPod charging cables lying around at home or your office, can you please drop them in to the school’s office. They would be very gratefully received.
Students Not Returning to Landsdale in 2016
Please let us know if your children currently in Pre-Primary to Year 5 will no longer be attending Landsdale Primary School next year because you are moving or changing schools. We are doing our best to get well organised for a smooth start to 2016 but we rely on your help in this important area. All schools are funded according to our enrolments so it is very important that we plan on accurate enrolment numbers. Families who know they will not be returning to Landsdale Primary School in 2016 are asked to click on the attached link or phone the school.

Library News
http://landsdalelibrary.weebly.com/
Library Book Borrowing Closes
Student borrowing has now closed for 2015. All library books are due back on Friday 4th December. Please ensure that your child has returned their library books before school closes for the year. If your child has lost their library book, please let the class teacher or Mrs Murray know so it can be paid for. There will be no holiday borrowing over the extended Christmas break.
Parent loans are also due back on Friday 4th December.
Students Leaving Landsdale Primary School
At the end of each school year, we lose many library books to students who leave the school without returning their books. If your child is graduating from LPS or transferring to another school, it is imperative that they return their library books before school closes.
Book Covering Volunteers
Thank you to the few wonderful parents who have assisted with library book covering over the past few weeks. Thanks to you, we now have all the 2015 Scholastic Book Fair Commission titles available for our students to borrow, along with all the picture books purchased to replace those lost in the Kindy fire earlier this year.
Mammoth effort, ladies!
Summer Reading Club
The Summer Reading Club launched on Tuesday 1st December and runs until 31st January 2016. All the information you and your child needs to participate can be found on the SRC website:
http://www.summerreadingclub.org.au/
Registration forms are available in the library@landsdale or you can register online.
Here is an excerpt from the Summer Reading Club website:
Reading is an essential skill for everyone. It is the vital foundation of a child’s learning and engagement in their school years and for life.
The Summer Reading Club encourages children and young people to discover great authors and illustrators of picture books, junior and young adult fiction and non-fiction. The literary and creative activities developed for the online activity site, and the programming delivered in local public libraries aim to encourage a love of reading and ongoing multi-literacy skills development among children, young people and their families during the summer holidays.
Participation in the Summer Reading Club is FREE!
You can encourage your child to participate in the Summer Reading Club in the following ways:
- Contact your local library to see if they are offering a Summer Reading Club program of activities in your area.
- Take your child to the library and help them select books to read during the summer holidays. Your local librarian will be able to help guide your child to select reading materials that are of interest to them.
- Register your child in the 2015 Summer Reading Club by completing the online registration form.
- Encourage your children to participate in the online Summer Reading Club activities. The Summer Reading Club interactive website provides fun and engaging online activities such as book raves, writing competitions, games, recommended reading lists and links to other websites for children and their families.
- Guide and assist your child to navigate through the website and activities – for example, with younger participants, scan a picture of their artwork and help them upload their work to the e-gallery or assist them when typing their responses to the online writing competitions.
- The website activities are grouped into three levels to appeal to a diverse range of readers. Each level has a number of interactive activities – Preschool activities (0-5yrs); Primary level activities (5-12yrs) and Secondary level activities (12+ years).
Themed activity booklets are available for download for each age level.
- Help your child submit their entries to the writing activities, add a comment to Have Your Say, write a Book Rave or send in their artwork to the Summer Reading Club Gallery. There are a number of prizes to be won. Online competitions close 31 January 2016. Winners will be notified by phone and/or email.
- Offer help when asked for assistance.
- Read with your children. Help them complete their reading logs!
We appreciate your support and encourage you to read this summer with your children both online and at your local library!
Summer Reading Club Registration Incentive
All children who register in-house or online for the Summer Reading Club before 31 January 2016 will go into a national draw to win 1 of 8 iPods. Parental permission to enter the prize draw is required for all children aged 12 and under. One winner will be drawn from each state/territory.
Summer Reading Club Online Competitions and Prizes
This summer’s club is packed full of adventure. There are 10 online competitions for your children to participate in. The online competitions are open from 1 December 2015 to 31 January 2016. Children aged 12 and under require parental permission to enter the online prize draws. A child’s work can be submitted for posting to the site independent of entering the prize draw associated with each online activity.
On The Ball … with Mr P
Interschool Speedball (Modified Handball) Championships
Congratulations to all the students that competed in the annual Speedball tournament held at North Woodvale Primary School on Friday, November 20. All our students showed excellent sportsmanship and their skills and game play was very good as well! Landsdale took a clean sweep of both the boys and girls A & B Divisions, which meant we won the overall Champion School shield for 2015.
Handball is a developing sport in Australia, but one which lends itself to both boys and girls and Landsdale is very proud to be one of a few pioneering schools to help develop the sport at the North Woodvale tournament at a junior level and have it endorsed as a School Sport WA event.
Thanks again for Mr. Zyruka for organising such a fantastic day.
Hopman Cup Trophy Tour
Last week we treated to a very special event with the Hopman Cup being displayed and shown for our students to see. Megan, from Tennis West, came to visit and informed the students about history from the event and some students were lucky enough to hold the trophy!
Attached is a schedule if you are interested in attending the Hopman Cup and a code you can input to get cheap tickets for children to the tournament. If you book at www.ticketek.com.au/hopmancup enter the codeword: TWEVENTS for the discounted tickets.
Year 6 Term 4 Cluster Friendly
Don’t forget the Year 6 Cluster Friendly with Ashdale and Madeley this Friday from 1pm at Kingsway Sporting Complex. The ‘Friendly’ is designed to place students from all three schools with each other to make up teams in Speedball, Flagbelt Rugby and Capture the Flag in the hope they will be able to meet some new classmates going into 2016 if they attend Ashdale Secondary College. Students will need to wear their school uniform and have an early lunch at 12pm on the day, ready to depart at 12.20pm.
Music Notes … with Mr Angel
Carols in the Park
The school choir will be participating in the annual Carols in the Park held on the Warradale oval on Friday 11th December. Please return permission slips. Students will need to wear a Christmas T-shirt for this event.

Choir Party
We will be having a Christmas Choir party on Monday 14th December at lunch time. All choir students will be asked to bring a plate to share. Thank you.
WAGSMS photos
Here are a few photos of our recent choir performance held at the Crown Theatre, Burswood.
SIM concert
Congratulations to the SIM students who participated in the Ashdale Secondary College Music concert held on Monday 30th November. It was fantastic to see how Landsdale PS was well represented with students from all instrumental groups participating in performances. It was also good to see many of our former students still participating in the SIM music program. Well done.
SIM Band workshop
Congratulations to our SIM students who participated in a Primary Band workshop held recently at Ashdale Secondary College.
P&C President’s Update
Well it’s come to that time of the year, our last meeting of the P&C for 2015 occurred on Tuesday 24th November, and we had a great turn out. All executive positions will be vacated at the AGM next year (Tuesday 16th January), so if you’re interested in becoming more involved with the school, consider taking on a role… President, Vice President, Secretary or Treasurer. Feel free to contact us on the P&C Facebook page or via email if you’d like more information on what is involved with these roles…. landsdaleprimarypandc@yahoo.com.au
As the outgoing President, I just wanted to take the opportunity to say what a pleasure it has been working with the P&C and the school. I would sincerely like to thank Ken Armstrong and Leanne White for their assistance and guidance, and everyone that has pitched in and helped the P&C out (whether a member or not), all your hard work and efforts to help the school are greatly appreciated by us, but especially by the kids. We’ve have had an amazing bunch of volunteers this year, and I take my hat off to you!
Special thanks to our Coordinators who stepped up and brought order to what can be portfolio chaos… Amanda Ferguson (Banking), Sally Pellegrini (Safety House), Melissa Kelleher (Uniform Shop), Alison Belstead (Canteen) and Abby Attwood, superbly backed up by Mel Kelleher and Deb Glasson (Fundraising), plus our Executive team:
Emma Dear, our fabulous treasurer…
Olivia Osment, the most organized person I’ve ever met, which is why we made her Secretary! She kept us all on track this year (especially me!)
And big thanks to our Vice President, Keera Bull, who’s support and advice was (and is) invaluable!
While I’m thanking everyone, a shout out to Melissa Kelleher and Debbie Glasson who did an awesome job organising the school disco for the kids this year … it certainly looked to me like the kids had a fabulous time and the hotdogs were a massive hit! Most wouldn’t understand the hard work and effort that goes into creating a successful event like this one, and Mel and Deb both made it look pretty effortless, congratulations!
Here’s a short advertising message from a company called GroupTogether regarding end of year gifts for Teachers…
Like to organise a group gift for the teacher without the hassle? Check out www.GroupTogether.com . Parents can chip in online and add a message to the card. They do the reminding, collecting and tracking for you, then send you the money to buy a nice gift. Perhaps suggest a low contribution amount per parent so it’s cheap for everyone but the teacher still gets one great gift rather than more just collectors.
So that’s it for another year!
Again, thanks for everybody’s support and maybe have a think over the break whether you’d like to take an Executive role or become one of our new Coordinators.
2016 is already shaping up to be an exciting year with a Quiz Night in Term 1 and another School Fete towards the end of the year (which I’m sure will be as huge a success as the last one!), hope you all stick around to be a part of it…
Thanks
Kendra McDonald

OTHER FUNDRAISING VENTURES 2016
2016 will be a busy year book-ended by the Quiz Night in Term 1 and the School Fete in Term 4. We'll be looking for mums and dads to help us help the school community not just for these big events but also for others planned throughout the year. To help you think about where you might help out and also so you know what’s coming when, this is a rough calendar of fundraising events for 2016.
Term 1 - Back to School Quiz Night (Week 7, 19th March), Easter Egg raffle (Week 8), Entertainment Book (Week 9?) Term 2 – Mothers’ Day Stall (Week 2), Lapathon (TBA) Term 3 – Fathers’ Day Stall (Week 7), School disco (TBA) Term 4 - School Fete (Week 7, 25th November?), Kid's Art Products such as calendars/cards/plates (TBA).
In the mix may also be crazy hair days, sausage sizzles, etc.
At the beginning of the year, the P&C will discuss the school's wish list and funding priorities. It has already committed profits from the Quiz Night, the nature play areas and some additional ideas for 2016 including fans or some sort of cooling for the undercover area. If you have any good ideas, why don’t you come along to the P&C meetings in Term 1 in Weeks 3 and 7 and join in on the conversation!
A BIG THANK YOU TO ALL THE VOLUNTEERS FOR 2015!
