28 February 2019

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Families,

We are not going to restructure the school even though we have fewer students enrolled than we initially planned we would have.

For the next three years we are strengthening our focus on engaging students. We use the I-Values, which are:

  1. I think clearly
  2. I think creatively
  3. I work well with others
  4. I make good choices
  5. I am responsible
  6. I am a global citizen

We expect students to be responsible for their own behaviour; however, we do teach them to understand their emotions and how to respond to difficulties. On the school development day this Friday we are discussing playground behaviour and specifically focusing on helping students who are making poor choices.

You are reminded that your children should be wearing broad brimmed hats at school. The hats are available from the Uniform Shop.

Regards,

Dr Tony Beswick
Principal

Parent Information Sessions

Over the next couple of weeks teachers will be conducting parent information sessions. These sessions are an opportunity for you to meet your child’s class teacher/s and find out about the learning journey their children will be taking this year. Teachers will cover aspects of classroom organisation, behaviour management, curriculum programs and whole school activities. Every child should have at least one parent attend as vital information about your child’s learning program and your responsibilities as a parent will be discussed. This session is for parents only, children must not attend.

Parents are also reminded to keep an eye out in the school newsletter each fortnight for parenting articles and tips. To help, you may wish to become a parent link representative for your child’s class.

Sessions will last no more than an hour, and parents will have an opportunity to ask questions. Please consider your questions carefully and ensure they pertain to whole class or school processes and are not specific to your child. Parents can make an appointment with the class teacher if they have questions of a personal nature.

Please check class Dojo's and teacher communication avenues for further information.

1-1 Laptop Program

The Year 4 students are really excited to be using their laptops and learning to use them appropriately and safely.

While they are learning the basics it is a great time for parents to learn how to manage the laptops and help students to make good choices. Thank you to the parents who filled in the expression of interest in having a parent workshop.

Considering the responses to the survey we are offering two workshops on Thursday 14th of March one at 7:30am-8.30am and the other at 4:00-5:00pm. Parents of Year 4-6 students are welcome, please bring your child’s Macbook as it will be a “hands on” workshop.

If you haven’t already, visit our website for information and links to sites that relate to digital citizenship and online safety: digital citizenship page.

If you have questions about the 1-1 Program, visit Frequently Asked Questions to assist you.

When the machines are imaged, a note is sent home with information regarding setting up passwords and home wireless, more information and “how to” tutorials can be found on the Apple Support site.

We have a technician onsite every day except Wednesday. Your child is able to let the technician know of any issues with their machine by logging a job on the Helpdesk which you can access through the Helpdesk link on our website home page or by informing their teacher.

NAPLAN Online

The date for Year 3 & 5 students’ NAPLAN Online testing is 14th-24th May. A parent information pamphlet will be sent home next week with details relating to the tests.

ENTHUSIATIC READERS!

Wow! What a fantastic start to the year we’ve had in the Library! Our students have been devouring the new library books and snapping up their old favourites. All classes have now been into the Library with their class teacher. Please remind your child to bring their library book and bag on their allocated day.

The Library is a fun place to visit, as you will quickly discover! We hope to see you soon. The closing date for the return of all library books this term will be Friday 5th April, 2019.

Opening Times

The Library is open for book borrowing at these times:

Before school

Mon-Fri

Lunchtime

Parents/caregivers are most welcome to visit the Library with their child to borrow books before or after school, or at any time during the school day. While here, you may wish to browse through our range of LEAP (Linking Education and Parents) parenting publications and the Kindy Storytime collection. These are all available for loan. Parents can also sign up to become Library members.

Request for Book Covering Volunteers

Since the Library opened, we have catalogued 580 home reading and library books! The home readers are now being covered, so they can be distributed to classroom teachers as soon as possible. If you can assist with covering some books at home or at school, please contact Mrs Murray in the Library or email me Sharon.Murray@education.wa.edu.au

We provide all materials for covering, and there is no rush to complete the task! Thank you in advance.

On the Ball …. With Mr P

Runners Club

Students now have received a QR code and they wear this when they come to Runners Club. The code gets scanned every time they do a lap and stays recorded on the ipad. Once students receive certain milestones, they will receive a ‘badge’ to acknowledge this. The milestones are; 25km, 50km and 100km.

One lap is approximately 250 metres, so I will leave you with a maths activity to calculate how many laps you need to run to achieve the milestones! I am thinking of making Runners Club progressive, so students will keep a record of their laps right throughout their primary school years, consequently the next milestone might be 150km.

See you there!

Colour Run!

The colour run will be back this year on Friday, 29th March so get those white t-shirts out! More information soon!!

Chaplain’s Chat

Hey All,

In case you missed it previously, my name is James Middleton, I’m the chaplain at Landsdale Primary School. I trust you are settling in well as we near the half way mark of Term 1! One of the hats I wear at Landsdale is to oversee the EdConnect mentoring program. We’re fortunate to have some members from the community who give their time to come and support students with various needs, from social / emotional, behavioural through to academic. Most of our mentors are back on board this year and either have started or will be starting shortly. This is a valuable program that helps to ensure our students at Landsdale are able to get the support they need to further their education.

The chaplaincy program at Landsdale is an ‘Opt-Out’ programme, and thus if we do not hear from you and receive a completed Opt-Out form, the assumption is that you give permission for your child to access chaplaincy services if needed. You’ll find another section in the newsletter that outlines the opt-out process.
