14 March 2019

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Families,

Thank you to all the parents/carers who have encouraged their children engaging with the Runner’s Club this year. Research shows that doing physical activity has a positive effect on academic results and relationships.

The Colour Run is on again as a fund raiser for the school. Last year the majority of the funds went to the adventure playground extension which we are working though this semester. An injection of more funds will buy a better playground. The best way to get donations for this year’s colour run is to share your link on Facebook, email and text messages. The deadline is 29th March, which is very soon!

The new school board chair is Ben Scott. He has been involved with the school in capital works for students with disabilities. He has three children at the school and his son, Sam Scott, is the school’s ICT Minister on the student council.

Next to Landsdale Primary is an enclosed estate that has a driveway leading onto The Broadview. I request that you not park in the estate’s grounds or block the entrance to their homes.

Regards,

Dr Tony Beswick
Principal

Contributions and Charges 2019

We really appreciate the parents who have paid their child’s contribution and charges for 2019. Monies collected from your contributions and charges go to specific learning programs by the purchase of additional resources.

For your convenience, payments can be made via Qkr!, EFTPOS, cash, cheque and Direct debit. The details are: BSB 066-132 Account 10249789 (Student’s Full Name must be included in the Reference).

If you have not yet registered for Qkr! please click on the link below for instructions.

Kiss n’ Drive and Parking

As with the majority of schools, traffic is usually congested around the school.

If you are dropping off or picking up your child, please ensure you use our Kiss n’ Drive area at the front of the school. With cars correctly filing through in turn using this system, it ensures the safety of all students and pedestrians.

If you plan on parking and going into the school, please only use the outside bays provided. This does not include the bays at the front of the school for Kiss n’ Drive.

Please do not park in or across other people’s driveways or property. This is illegal and you will be fined if caught. The Council are cracking down on illegal parking around schools. If you do have permission to park in someone else’s driveway, your car must be parked past their letterbox as property before the letterbox is owned by the City of Wanneroo. You may incur a fine being parked on their land.

1-1 Laptop Program

The Year 4 students are really excited to be using their laptops and learning to use them appropriately and safely.

While they are learning the basics it is a great time for parents to learn how to manage the laptops and help students to make good choices. Thank you to the parents who filled in the expression of interest in having a parent workshop.

Considering the responses to the survey we are offering two workshops in the Library on Thursday 14th March one at 7:30am-8.30am and the other at 4:00-5:00pm. Parents of Year 4-6 students are welcome, please bring your child’s Macbook as it will be a “hands on” workshop.

If you haven’t already, visit our website for information and links to sites that relate to digital citizenship and online safety: digital citizenship page.

If you have questions about the 1-1 Program, visit Frequently Asked Questions to assist you.

When the machines are imaged, a note is sent home with information regarding setting up passwords and home wireless, more information and “how to” tutorials can be found on the Apple Support site.

We have a technician onsite every day except Wednesday. Your child is able to let the technician know of any issues with their machine by logging a job on the Helpdesk which you can access through the Helpdesk link on our website home page or by informing their teacher.

NAPLAN Online

The date for Year 3 & 5 students’ NAPLAN Online testing is 14th-24th May. A parent information pamphlet will be sent home next week with details relating to the tests.

READING INCENTIVES

There are so many reasons to read! Our students certainly LOVE reading. It shows in their enthusiasm for visiting the Library to borrow and read for the sheer enjoyment of it. Amongst our older students, it is evident in their usage of our Landsdale Digital Library (Wheelers eBooks and Audiobooks). However, sometimes children need a little encouragement to find the right book, subject or series to motivate them to read consistently. We can assist by pointing them in the right direction towards books that align with their reading interests. We also offer other reading incentives, including:

  • Library Book of the Week
  • Books on Hold
  • “Get Caught Reading” Raffle Tickets
  • “Golden Barcode” Rewards
  • Book Suggestion Jar

A visit to the Library before school, at lunchtime, after school or during Library Book Change Time, will allow your child to participate in these reward-for-reading programs. We aim to assist our students to improve their reading fluency and comprehension, so they will develop a life-long love of reading for pleasure.

The Library is a fun place to visit, as you will quickly discover! We hope to see you soon. The closing date for the return of all library books this term will be Friday 5th April, 2019.

Opening Times

The Library is open for book borrowing at these times:

  • Before school

8.30-8.45am

Mon-Fri

  • Lunchtime

1.30-1.45pm Mon

Tues, Thur, Fri (Closed Wed)

  • After school

3.00-3.30pm

Mon-Fri

Parents/caregivers are most welcome to visit the Library with their child to borrow books before or after school, or at any time during the school day. While here, you may wish to browse through our range of LEAP (Linking Education and Parents) parenting publications and the Kindy Storytime collection. These are all available for loan. Parents can also sign up to become Library members.

Thank You to Book Covering Volunteers

We had an amazing response to our request for assistance with book covering. Thank you so much to our wonderful parent community for their support. We have almost cleared the backlog. Only four more boxes to go!

Chaplain’s Chat

Hey All,

Here we are at week 6, the term is flying by! Most students are now well adjusted to the rhythm of their new classes and are getting stuck into learning. However, not all students adjust quickly and, for some, anxiety about school or aspects of school is a constant companion. Beyond Blue has some great online resources to help you walk alongside your child as they face their anxious concerns. You can find more at:

https://healthyfamilies.beyondblue.org.au

One of the examples they give is called Climb the ladder. Their suggestion is “instead of skirting the scary situation, you could try a technique called ‘laddering’ – breaking down worries into manageable chunks and gradually working towards a goal. Let’s say your child is afraid of water and swimming. Instead of avoiding the pool, create some mini-goals to build their confidence. Start out by just sitting and watching other kids swimming. As they feel more comfortable get them to try dangling their legs in the water, then standing in the shallow end, and so on.”

You’ll find this and many other suggestions at the Healthy Families Beyond Blue website. Whether anxiety is a current concern or not, why not take a look as there are many other great resources available as well.

All the best,

James Middleton
