23 May 2019
From the Principal
Dear Parents and Families,
As part of the school’s review of behaviour management, the P&C and I met to discuss how the school recognises exceptional student performance. This discussion was held because a parent said that the I-Value letter was of no value.
At the moment, one student receives the Aussie of the Month so we will keep that award. Retained are merit certificates because they acknowledge one or two students per class. Further, teachers give one or two letters a term to commend outstanding student effort. However, it was felt that because 95% of students receive an I-Value letter it seems to have lost its value so this letter will not be used anymore.
The school worked around the NAPLAN test problems last week. We will be able to see later if students’ results were affected by Tuesday’s portal issues experienced by many Australian schools.
For safety reasons, from Monday 27 May, 2019 students who are not in after school care and are remaining at Kiss and Drive will be located in the Bandicoot enclave. This means that students will no longer be left outside the office after 3:15pm.
Regards,
Dr Tony Beswick

LA18’s Sustainability Project
LA18 have been undertaking a joint classroom and visual art sustainability project this semester. Starting with an excursion to Pinnaroo Point, with the organisation Earth Assist students picked up debris and categorised it using data collection sheets. The information students collected was entered into a national online database that is used to track debris. Students discussed how they think they can combat rubbish in their area and how we can live more sustainably. This term students collected all the plastic waste from one recess to show how much is thrown away every day in school. Students are going to be using the plastic to create sculptures of turtles, watch this space to see their creations!

NATIONAL SIMULTANEOUS STORY TIME (NSS) – WEDNESDAY 22nd MAY
National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is an annual campaign that aims to encourage more young Australians to read and enjoy books. Now in its 19th successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant, fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy, using an Australian children's book that explores age-appropriate themes, and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for Foundation to Year 6. NSS is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. This year’s book is "Alpacas with Maracas" written and illustrated by Matt Cosgrove. By facilitating National Simultaneous Storytime, ALIA aims to:
- promote the value of reading and literacy;
- promote the value and fun of books;
- promote an Australian writer and publisher;
- promote storytime activities in public libraries and communities around the country;
- provide opportunities to involve parents, grandparents, the media and others to participate in and enjoy
- the occasion.
Students and teachers at Landsdale Primary School will be sharing “Alpacas with Maracas” in their classrooms and in the Library on Wednesday 22nd May. Various fun activities relating to the book will be completed in class.
In 2018, over 1,062,230 participants in over 8,255 locations took part in National Simultaneous Storytime, reading the book "Hickory Dickory Dash" written by Tony Wilson and illustrated by Laura Wood, enjoying a range of supporting educational activities, songs, games, dress ups and lots of fun.

Another great opportunity that I’d like to draw your attention to is that Landsdale Primary School’s P&C have booked Di Wilcox, creator of The Magic Coat, to come to our school to run a FREE Parent Information Seminar on Wednesday 29th May 2019 from 7pm to 8pm. Di Wilcox came to Landsdale last year, through the previous chaplain Natasha, and was very well received. Keep an eye out for more information from the P & C regarding this great opportunity.

Congratulations to our two ‘legends’ of Landsdale – the fastest girl and boy runner to complete the course regardless of year level. In 2019, our 20th running of the event our legends were Grace F with a time of 5 mins 37 secs and Kosta J with a run of 5 mins and 11 secs. Well done!! Both students were in year 6.
The interschool competitors will be competing at UWA Sports Park on Friday, August 9. As previously mentioned, the interschool selection criteria for this SSWA event is the top 5 girls and boys in years 5 and 6, and the top 5 boys and girls from year 4 and under. As the selection was based from our ‘Legends of Landsdale’ course, the year 4 and under competitors were selected from the top 5 times in the year 3 and 4 events.
We will take a team of 30 students.
