26 September 2019
From the Principal
Dear Parents and Families,
We have recently received the NAPLAN results for 2019. Pleasingly, the upward trend in all areas continues. This means that again we are above the national averages and higher than the average scores for similar schools. In all areas our students have shown high results and high progress.
Reading is a stand out area and the two school wide strategies in which teachers focus on small group work has been working. The two whole school writing strategies are also reaping significant benefits. Our maths problem-solving model has helped students and our focus on basic maths concepts has supported the upward trend.
If you read, or listen to your child read, for 10 minutes per day there will be a significant improvement in their reading ability.
Teachers will soon be constructing class lists for 2020. We are seeking your advice in terms of any information that could assist us. This information concerns clashes that your child has with others, perceived bullying or family issues but not selection of a teacher for your child. Please email Tania.Burke@education.wa.edu.au or send a letter marked ‘Private and Confidential’ to Tania by Thursday 31st October, 2019.
I wish all students a fantastic holiday and to the staff who have all worked hard for your children.
Regards,
Dr Tony Beswick

2020 1-1 Laptop Program
Is your child entering Year 4 in 2020 or are you considering joining your year 5 or 6 child into the 1-1 program? Read on!
Our parent funded 1-1 Laptop program ensures our students have the best opportunities to acquire essential skills in digital technologies and STEM for their future. We recognise and value the parents of our senior students’ commitment to their children’s education.
In 2019 parents had the option of choosing the MacBook Air 13” or the iPad for the program. Teachers, students and our parent representatives all strongly recommended the MacBook as the school’s preferred device.
The response from parents this year has been overwhelmingly positive, with 85% of students having their own device, and of those, all but 4 were MacBooks.
For 2020 we continue to recommend the MacBook Air 13” as the preferred device, while including the option of the iPad; there is also a leasing option for both devices.
We recommend the MacBook Air 13” over the iPad for the following reasons, the MacBook:
- is sturdier and has greater longevity.
- has stronger parental controls and Remote desktop for teacher supervision of student use.
- is more powerful and has more features within applications common to both Mac and iPad eg. Pages, Garageband, iMovie, google suite.
- is easier to use for staff and students when accessing tools for learning like the internet, google suite and network resources.
- has a larger screen and keyboard.
- has better tools for applications, student monitoring and network resources, eg. being able to have the school image, teachers being able to monitor student usage in real time.
We partner with Winthrop Australia to obtain the best educational prices and onsite technical support. They provide a convenient and easy online portal for you to order a device for your child. If you source a device elsewhere consider the portal information to compare accurately. Visit the Winthrop Portal for more information.
Prior to purchasing a device, please attend one of our parent information sessions for more information and discussion with our 1-1 leadership team:

Art News – 2019 Rethink Waste Art Competition
A massive congratulations to LA18 as their turtle installation titled ‘Turtle Hope’, has been accepted as a finalist into the 2019 Rethink Waste Art Competition. Students made their turtles from recycled materials, even collecting plastic waste at recess to use on the shells.
The turtles will be exhibited at The Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) in Perth, from Monday 30th September until Friday 11th October.
Please go and support the talented students and of course vote for their artwork for the public choice award!

Library News
Holiday Loans
We apologise for the interruption to Library borrowing over the past week. We experienced technical issues resulting from a computer replacement. Thank you for your patience during this time. Library services will return to normal next term. In the meantime, students and parents are welcome to take out holiday loans for the October break. Items borrowed for holidays will be due back on the first day of Term 4 (Monday 14th October).
Please return all the books that you borrowed this term, if you haven’t already done so. If you’re not sure what you still have on loan, please see Mrs Murray in the Library for an updated list.

2019 Interschool Athletics Carnival
It’s been raining carnivals at Landsdale Primary School and last week we hosted the interschool athletic events on Tuesday and Thursday. Landsdale competed with much spirit and it was fantastic to see all the students demonstrating great sportsmanship and cheering everybody on.
I would also like to thank the students that gave up their lunch times to attend try outs and practices very early in the term and the teachers that assisted with this training - in particular Mr Hayward, Mr Brown and Mrs Ridley. Your help is much appreciated!

Tennis West visit
On Thursday, September 5 we were privileged enough to have a visit from Australian tennis legend John Fitzgerald to present the pre-primary students their Hot Shot tennis racquets! John chatted to us about all things tennis and even had a shot with some of our interschool tennis students. Thanks to Tennis West for all their work in organising the visit.

Faction Athletics Carnival
Congratulations to all the students that participated in our Faction Athletics Carnival.
All students tried very hard with the events they participated in and should be very proud of their efforts. Thanks very much to all students, staff and parents for their patience with the weather and the commitment to finishing the carnival a week later.
Well done to Banksia for being deserved winners of the sportsmanship award. This faction has deserved to win the award this year, not just on Faction Carnival Day but throughout training and PE lessons and thanks to Mrs White for being a ‘sportsmanship spy’ throughout the day for taking careful notice of terrific sportsmanship.
Well done Banksia for winning the championship trophy – it was a very close contest this year and the green machine managed to just scrape through. Well done to all the champion boys and girls and for the tremendous sportsmanship shown.
