From the Principal

Dear Parents and Families,

As you are all aware, our Principal Dr Tony Beswick is currently on long service leave and I am acting Principal.

Prior to his departure on his great adventure of kayaking in Antarctica waters he has made a big decision. Tony has announced to the staff that he will be retiring in January and so will not be returning to Landsdale next year.

He notified the staff via email and said this about his decision:

“This is a difficult decision because Landsdale Primary has been a marvellous school. It is because of your dedication to your students and to your colleagues that it has been a joy to come to work. I have loved the staff teamwork and the keen repartee of the Leadership Team.“

He also asked me to pass on his appreciation for the support the parents and Landsdale community provide to the school and himself over his time as Principal.

There will be a selection process to appoint our new Principal early next year. I congratulate Mrs Cass Di-Sisto, who will be the Acting Principal while that selection process is initiated.

I wish Tony well in his well deserved retirement and on behalf of the staff and students thank him for his strong leadership towards building the capacity of the staff to improve student outcomes.

Last week we had our annual “Thank You” morning tea for all the parents and community members who give their time and support to help our school. Their contribution to the school is a significant part of the reason Landsdale Primary School is so successful and we appreciate their support greatly. I especially would like to thank the community members who serve on the P&C and the School Board.

I hope our Landsdale community show their amazing support by coming along and enjoying the Fete tomorrow. A huge thank you to Nat Herridge and her team of helpers!

Regards

Ms Leanne White
Principal

20 Years!

Landsdale is celebrating its 20th year. Students and families past and present, thank you, we couldn’t have been so successful without your wonderful contributions.

The school was opened in 1999 and as part of the opening, students and staff contributed to a Time Capsule, to be opened in 20 years. It is TIME to open the capsule!

The Time Capsule will be dug up on 4pm Thursday 21st November to reveal hidden treasures. Selected staff and past students will open it privately and ensure all is in good order. All are welcome to witness the digging and catch up with other past students.

The contents, which include a letter describing the “educational landscape in 1999” and memorabilia, will be on display at our Fete, Friday 22nd November from 4.30-8.30pm. We invite past and present students and families to attend the Fete and share some memories.

We often hear about past students and their journey in life, but rarely do we hear from them directly. If you are a past student and would like to share with us your memories and let us know what you are doing now, please contribute to our 20 years @ Landsdale eBook by completing this short survey.

2020 Parent Funded1-1 Laptop Program

Thank you to all the parents who attended our first Parent Information forum. It was well attended and we had really productive discussions. The parents were really supportive of their child’s educational needs and understood the importance of learning to use technology well. We teach the students to use the devices for deeper learning tasks and we are ensuring they know how to use it ethically and safely.

The main points that were discussed were:

  • How we use the Mac books for learning tasks that promote original thinking, engagement and creativity but also reinforce mastery of skills and understanding. Instant feedback is also given to teachers and students for better progress.
  • What procedures and plans are in place to teach students how to have a positive digital footprint and use technology ethically.
  • While parents are able to choose an iPad for their child to join the program, our recommended device is the Macbook Air 13” as it is more powerful and versatile for learning situations, sturdier and connects more easily to the network.
  • Parental controls and managing devices through a mobile device manager (MDM) for a safer and more monitored environment. The Macbook has better parental controls built in and the iPad would need the third party mobile device management (MDM) tool, which we use for our school iPads and could be provided at a small cost to parents.
  • Information on the vendor and specifics about the program. The Portal is available for you to access pricing and device specifications information and order your device.

We partner with Winthrop Australia to obtain the best educational prices and onsite technical support. They provide a convenient and easy online portal for you to order a device for your child. If you source a device elsewhere consider the portal information to compare accurately. Visit the Winthrop Portal for more information. For security reasons you will need a passcode to access the Portal which will be in the information package that will be given to you at the parent information forum, or if ordering earlier please contact the school for the code.

Prior to purchasing a device, please attend one of our parent information sessions for more information and discussion with our 1-1 leadership team. Both sessions will be held in the library.

Our next two Parent Information Forums are scheduled for:

Wednesday 27th November at 5-6pm
Thursday 28th November at 4-5pm

If you can’t attend any of these sessions and would like more information please visit our website for 1-1 Program news and FAQ or contact the school.

OUR BEST BOOK FAIR YET!

Last week's Scholastic Book Fair was an outstanding success! In fact, it was our best Book Fair ever. Thank you to our entire school community of students, staff, parents and grandparents for supporting the Book Fair. You have made a significant difference to the reading choices that our students enjoy.

Below is a summary of the final Book Fair figures:

Total SALES for the week - $10,157.85
Total COMMISSION earned for the Library - $3,319

Total value of books received so far into the Library from Book Fair - $1,904
Balance of rewards left to spend on books in 2020 from Scholastic - $1,415

The commission books received so far are now being accessioned, labelled and covered. They will be available for borrowing this week, so our students will have the benefit of reading the titles they saw at the Book Fair before the end of the school year.

I'd like to extend a special thank you to Ms Mel Fuller, our P&C Book Fair Co-ordinator. She worked tirelessly for months in preparation for the Fair. Mel also gave up a week of paid work to run the Book Fair for our students in a fun and efficient way. This is a major commitment and greatly appreciated. Mel was assisted by Mrs Sonya March and a fantastic team of parent and grandparent volunteers.

Thank you everyone for your wonderful support.

Matilda Bay will be the place to visit during the school holidays this summer!

Families can enjoy a fun community day this summer as Australia’s oldest-water swimming event, the Swim Thru Perth, returns with a new supervised water fun zone just for kids. Children and families will get to enjoy this exciting new KIDS ZONE on Sunday, 19th January 2020, when the 101st swim of the Swim Thru Perth gets underway at Matilda Bay in Crawley.

Proudly presented by Nigel Satterley AM, the Swim Thru Perth is an all-inclusive open water swimming event designed for swimmers of all ages and abilities to experience the thrill of open water swimming over a variety of distances as part of a healthy lifestyle.

Swimmers aged 8 years and up can jump in for their first experience of open water swimming in the 250m Try-It race, while more advanced swimmers can give the 800m, 1.6km or 3.5km distance swims a go. Every participant is rewarded a commemorative medal for their efforts, and families can enjoy a sausage sizzle plus activities straight after the races. Fantastic prizes are available for schools and workplaces with the most registrations.

All proceeds proudly support children and families at Telethon Speech & Hearing.

Swim Thru Perth celebrates its 101st swim on Sunday, 19th January 2020 at Matilda Bay in Crawley. Early bird registrations are now open at the link below:
