13 February 2020
From the Principal
Dear Parents and Families,
Welcome to the 2020 school year. We have certainly had a smooth start with students returning full of enthusiasm and manners, and looking very smart in their school uniforms. Thank you parents for ensuring your children are ready to learn at the start of the school year.
You may already be aware that we have made some small changes to our recess and lunchtime routines this year to support students outdoor play time and behaviour management, while allowing staff to spend time monitoring healthy eating and reinforcing student wellness and decision making. We have an additional duty area so there are more adults out at recess and lunch, staff now eat lunch with their students in the classroom or a covered area, and students now return from recess and lunch to upbeat music rather than the siren. These changes are having a positive impact on both staff and students, and allowing for a smoother flow and transfer of routines during the school day.
I have a few reminders for parents as we begin the school year:
- Your child’s class teachers will be sending you information regarding parent sessions over the next few weeks. Please ensure at least one parent attends, as vital information will be discussed.
- Students should not be dropped at school before 8.15am as that is when supervision begins. There is onsite before school care for parents who must be at work early and need their children looked after. Please utilise this service. Similarly, please collect your children on time afterschool, and don’t forget the 2.30pm finish on Wednesdays.
- Dogs are not permitted on the school site, so please keep them outside the school fence area. This is Department of Education policy.
- The school’s Parent Link program is an important way to build communication channels and friendships with parents in your child’s class. Please sign up or speak with the parent rep/co-ordinator at your child’s class information session.
- Students must arrive at school in school uniform with a blue legionnaires or bucket hat for recess, lunch and sport. No clothing with logos is permitted and no caps as they do not provide enough sun protection.
Please continue to support your children on their learning journey by making sure they have a healthy lunch, routines at home that support sleep and physical play, and opportunities to be read to or listened to every school night. These make a significant difference to their school experience.
Until next newsletter, happy parenting!
Regards,
Mrs Cass Disisto

Parent Information Sessions
Over the next couple of weeks’ staff will be conducting parent information sessions. These sessions are an opportunity for parents to meet their child’s class teacher/s and find out about the learning journey their children will be taking this year. Staff will cover aspects of classroom organisation, behaviour management, curriculum programs and whole school activities. Every child should have at least one parent attend as vital information about your child’s learning program and your responsibilities as a parent will be discussed. This session is for parents only; children must not attend.
Parents are also reminded to keep an eye out in the school newsletter each fortnight for parenting articles and tips, and the school Facebook page for information. The Class Dojo App is the main form of communication between parents and class teachers. Please check this app regularly.
Sessions will last no more than an hour, and parents will have an opportunity to ask questions. Please consider your questions carefully and ensure they pertain to whole class or school processes and are not specific to your child. Parents can make an appointment with the class teacher if they have questions of a personal nature.
2020 1-1 Laptop Program
Is your child entering Year 4 in 2020 or are you considering joining your year 5 or 6 child into the 1-1 program? Read on!
Our parent funded 1-1 Laptop program ensures our students have the best opportunities to acquire essential skills in digital technologies and STEM for their future. We recognise and value the parents of our senior students’ commitment to their children’s education.
In 2019 parents had the option of choosing the MacBook Air 13” or the iPad for the program. Teachers, students and our parent representatives all strongly recommended the MacBook as the school’s preferred device.
The response from parents this year has been overwhelmingly positive, with 85% of students having their own device, and of those, all but 3 were MacBooks.
For 2020 we continue to recommend the MacBook Air 13” as the preferred device, while including the option of the iPad. The minimum standard for the iPad is 32gb, 6th generation with 9.7” screen (so not iPad Minis), and the MacBook must be at least 128gb and upgradable to the latest iOS.
We recommend the MacBook Air 13” over the iPad for the following reasons, the MacBook:
- is more powerful and has more features within applications common to both Mac and iPad eg. Pages, Garageband, iMovie, google suite.
- is easier to use for staff and students when accessing tools for learning like the internet, google suite and network resources.
- has a larger screen and keyboard.
- has better tools for applications, student monitoring and network resources, eg. being able to have the school image, teachers being able to monitor student usage in real time.
- has stronger parental controls and Remote desktop for teacher supervision of student use.
- is sturdier and has greater longevity.
We partner with Winthrop Australia to obtain the best educational prices and onsite technical support. They provide a convenient and easy online portal for you to order a device for your child. If you source a device elsewhere consider the portal information to compare accurately. Visit the Winthrop Portal for more information.
As discussed at the Parent Information Forums last year if we receive enough interest from parents in Week 4 we will have a MacBook Basics Workshop on Wednesday 26th at 4.30pm in the Library.
Please click here to indicate if you will be attending.
Parent Link Program Welcome Back Picnic 2020
On Friday 7th February Landsdale Primary School families gathered on the school oval to welcome a new school year! The focus of the successful event was to allow parents to meet new fellow class parents and to build positive relationships. Class Parent representatives for 2020 also had the opportunity to introduce themselves.
Children and parents gathered with picnic rugs around signed areas with their classes and were able to get to know each other on the sunny and warm afternoon. Ice-cream and iced coffees proved to be refreshing treats from the soft serve and coffee vans that were present at the picnic.
The parent link program is run by parent volunteers and provides opportunities for classroom families to get to know each other as well as being a communication channel between families.

Landsdale Primary School Tenders Called for Library Chairs
Landsdale Primary School has 12 Green Wing Mesh Single Tilt Lock chairs that were purchased for the Library in 2018, available by tender. Members of the school community can submit a tender for one or more chairs. The original purchase price for each chair was $158.00. All reasonable offers will be considered and must include a name, contact details, number of chairs and price offered per chair. Tenders must be handed into the office in a sealed envelope, marked confidential and addressed to Jacqui Lyons, Manager Corporate Services. All chairs have recently been cleaned and will be sold in ‘as is’ condition. Tenders close at 3.30pm on Thursday 20th February. Successful tenders will be notified on Friday 21st February, for collection during the Week beginning Monday 24th February.

LIBRARY NOW OPEN!
Welcome back! The start of a new school year is always so exciting. Over the school holidays, four new refrigerated air-conditioners were installed in the Library. This makes us the coolest place in the school to hang out, read, research, engage, share and relax!
The Library @ Landsdale is now open for student and parent book borrowing. We look forward to seeing our returning students and meeting families that are new to our school. The Library is a fun place to visit, as you will quickly discover! We hope to see you soon.
The closing date for the return of all library books this term will be Friday 3rd April, 2020.
Opening Times
The Library is open for book borrowing at these times:
|
8.30-8.45am |
Mon, Tues, Thur, Fri (Closed Wed morning) |
|
1.25-1.45pm |
Mon, Tues, Thur, Fri (Closed Wed) |
|
3.00-3.30pm |
Mon-Fri |
All 32 classes have a weekly “Library Book Change Time” organised by their class teacher. Please check your child’s rostered borrowing day with their class teacher and assist them with remembering their library book and library bag on that day.
Parents/caregivers are most welcome to visit the Library with their child to borrow books before or after school, or at any time during the school day. While here, you may wish to browse through our range of LEAP (Linking Education and Parents) parenting resources which are available for loan. Parents can also sign up to become Library members.
Lending Rules
Students may borrow two books for a period of two weeks. Books may be renewed if not required by other readers. Overdue notices are sent to classrooms every week. Please remind your child to return his/her library books by the due date. Library bags must be used for borrowing. These are available from the Uniform Shop and department stores. Shopping bags are also suitable to use as library bags.
Outstanding Loans from 2019
At the end of last year, we had 23 library books that were not returned, valued at $264. Invoices have been sent home to these families. Unfortunately, students who have not returned their 2019 library books will not be able to take books home from the Library this year until these items are sent back or paid for at the Front Office.
Scholastic Book Club
When ordering from Book Club, you are not only helping your children, but you are also helping our school. 20% of your spend comes back to our Library in valuable Scholastic Rewards, which are used to buy new library books. Order forms for the first issue of Book Club have now been distributed to classes. The due date for return of Issue 1 Scholastic orders is FRIDAY 21st FEBRUARY @ 9am.
Please submit your orders online using the Scholastic LOOP (Linked Online Ordering and Payment) Platform. The Parent LOOP Platform can be accessed via the link below.
https://mybookclubs.scholastic.com.au/Parent/Login.aspx
Ordered items are delivered to school (usually within a two week turnaround) and distributed to classrooms. Cash orders can also be placed at the Front Office before the advertised due date.
On the Ball …. With Mr P
Hi everybody,
Welcome back to 2020 and this year is another busy one for the Physical Education program. We hope to have a number of interschool events available to Landsdale students this term, involving interschool tennis and cricket.
This year we again have Mr Joshua Brown teaching Physical Education on Wednesdays - Fridays and he and I will teach a similar program. Mr Brown will also oversee the senior sport program on Fridays.
Please encourage children to wear appropriate footwear and a hat when attending Physical Education lessons. A water bottle at the moment would also be handy!
If your child is unable to participate in a Phys Ed lesson due to injury or illness, please communicate this to myself or your child’s classroom teacher.
Students are able to wear their faction shirts on their ‘Phys Ed’ day as well Thursdays for the year 3-4’s and Fridays for the year 5 and 6’s, their nominated sport days. Students can also wear their Faction t-shirt on special sporting events days in which they are competing, such as the Faction Athletics Carnival. Students can earn faction tokens for the ‘ripper recess’ at the end of the term for good behaviour and wearing their faction shirt!
Interschool activities- term 1
Interschool events on this term will mainly involve year 5’s as the week these are on is the same week as swimming for year 1-4’s and camp for year 6’s.
These events are;
Academy Plate – tennis
Girls, Thursday, March 12
Boys, Friday March 13
Interschool Cricket
Thursday, March 12
Faction Captain and Vice-Captain Voting
Faction Captain & Vice-Captain voting will take place tomorrow, February 14 at approximately 2pm. For each faction, there will be a boy and girl captain and a boy and girl vice-captain. Vice-Captains will be taken up by year 5 students, with year 6 students holding the Captain roles. Grevillea will vote in LA 15, Hovea in LA 28, Cassia in LA 14 and Banksia in LA 30.
Runners Club
Has commenced last Thursday and will run every Thursday on the top oval. As the oval isn’t marked, runners will run from a starting cone, around the goal posts, to another cone and back around the opposite goal posts to the starting cone. Runners have a QR code and laps will be recorded from this. Students will receive badges for achieving certain milestones. Well done to those who have started already!

Chaplain’s Chat
Hey All,
It’s great to be back for 2020. My name is James Middleton, I’m the chaplain at Landsdale Primary School. I’m looking forward to playing my role in continuing to develop a positive school atmosphere, and ensuring your children have the best opportunity to develop and grow into the healthy, happy and successful students.
The chaplaincy program at Landsdale is an ‘Opt-Out’ programme, and thus if we do not hear from you and receive a completed Opt-Out form, the assumption is that you give permission for your child to access chaplaincy services if needed. You’ll find another section in the newsletter that outlines this process.
If you yourselves ever have any queries or concerns, either about chaplaincy or matters you’d like support around, you can ask the office staff to pass on a message and I can contact you directly.
Looking forward to partnering with you in ensuring 2020 is another great year at Landsdale Primary School.
James Middleton
