From the Principal

Dear Parents and Families,

As students start to settle down into school routines, it is timely for parents to consider your own home routines, particularly in relation to your child's sleep and use of technology. Children feel most confident and comfortable when they know what is happening and what to expect in different situations. Routines are an important and easy way of building resilience and independence with your child. Creating routines with children and following them most days allows them to come to school ready to learn, rather than anxious, tired or angry. Please read the LEAP article in this newsletter for ideas on creating routines.

Our Kiss and Drive is a very successful traffic initiative that allows for students to be easily collected at the end of the day, while maintaining as much traffic flow as possible around the school. Please remember that parking in the area is not permitted, and remember to remind your children about paying attention and being ready to get into the car when you arrive. If you intend to be early to Kiss and Drive, let your child know, so they can move quickly from class. My suggestion to parents would be to arrive just around 3.15pm, when traffic is quieter and less congested. If any parents wish to volunteer to direct traffic at the Kiss and Drive please contact the school P and C or leave your name and details with the front office.

In 2019 78% of families paid their voluntary contributions to the school. Thank you. This money is an important additional resource that allows us to supplement school expenditure in the curriculum areas and directly support student learning. The school would love to have the contribution rate above 80% this year, as it has been in previous years. Payments of $60 per child can be made at the front office or over the phone using EFTPOS.

I hope all parents have been able to meet or touch base with their child’s class teacher already this year. It is very important that your child sees that you value education and are interested in their schooling. Please make contact if you haven’t already, just to introduce yourself and start building that relationship.

Until next newsletter, happy parenting!

Kind Regards,

Mrs Cass Disisto
Principal

2020 1-1 Laptop Program

Is your child in 4 in 2020 or are you considering joining your year 5 or 6 child into the 1-1 program? Read on!

Our parent funded 1-1 Laptop program ensures our students have the best opportunities to acquire essential skills in digital technologies and STEM for their future. We recognise and value the parents of our senior students’ commitment to their children’s education.

In 2019 parents had the option of choosing the MacBook Air 13” or the iPad for the program. Teachers, students and our parent representatives all strongly recommended the MacBook as the school’s preferred device.

The response from parents this year has been overwhelmingly positive, with 85% of students having their own device, and of those, all but 3 were MacBooks.

For 2020 we continue to recommend the MacBook Air 13” as the preferred device, while including the option of the iPad. The minimum standard for the iPad is 32gb, 6th generation with 9.7” screen (so not iPad Minis), and the MacBook must be at least 128gb and upgradable to the latest iOS.

We recommend the MacBook Air 13” over the iPad for the following reasons, the MacBook:

  • is more powerful and has more features within applications common to both Mac and iPad eg. Pages, Garageband, iMovie, google suite.
  • is easier to use for staff and students when accessing tools for learning like the internet, google suite and network resources.
  • has a larger screen and keyboard.
  • has better tools for applications, student monitoring and network resources, eg. being able to have the school image, teachers being able to monitor student usage in real time.
  • has stronger parental controls and Remote desktop for teacher supervision of student use.
  • is sturdier and has greater longevity.

We partner with Winthrop Australia to obtain the best educational prices and onsite technical support. They provide a convenient and easy online portal for you to order a device for your child. If you source a device elsewhere consider the portal information to compare accurately. Visit the Winthrop Portal for more information.

NAPLAN Online 2020

Students in Years 3 & 5 will be participating in the annual NAPLAN tests in reading, writing, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.

The assessment provides parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students are performing at the time of the tests. NAPLAN is just one aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process – student grades are based on ongoing assessments made by teachers about student performance, the NAPLAN results are not necessarily considered.

This year the NAPLAN tests will be held from Tuesday 12th May to Friday 22nd May, 2020. For more information please see the pdf attached.

WHEELERS EBOOKS & AUDIOBOOKS

You and your child can access eBooks & audiobooks at any time of night or day! The Library pays an annual subscription to Wheelers ePlatform (the company that administers eBooks & audiobooks on our behalf). Even when the Library is closed, our Wheelers ePlatform is OPEN 24/7!

Last year, our students met some amazing reading milestones. This year, they have already set some fantastic reading goals. To keep the momentum going, students can easily log on to Wheelers ePlatform and keep reading for enjoyment all year round!

You and your child can access eBooks (read along on a device) and audiobooks (listen to a book on a device) in two different ways:

  1. via the Wheelers ePlatform app
  2. via the Wheelers website

Borrowing an eBook or audiobook is as easy as 1,2,3…using the ePlatform app

  1. Search for and download the “ePlatform by wheelers books” app from your App Store (Apple Pay Store, Android App on Google Play or Windows)
  2. Find our Library (type in Landsdale Primary School)
  3. Log in using your Library ID* (see instructions below)

Browse and borrow an eBook to read on your device (phone, iPad, laptop, etc) OR listen to an audiobook on your device.

Make any place your reading place. Now there’s no need to wait for the Library to open…you can read anytime, anywhere…24/7.

Borrowing an eBook or audiobook is as easy as 1,2,3…using our Wheelers website:

  1. Log onto the Wheelers ePlatform website at https://landsdaleps.wheelers.co/
  2. Browse the ePlatform eBooks & audiobooks collection online. You can also use the various categories
(eg: Listening Favourites, Popular, Latest Additions, New/Recent Releases, Author and/or Title Search, Browse, etc).
  3. Log in using your Library ID* (see below).

Borrow your eBook and read on your device or listen to your audiobook on your device. (Great for long road trips!)

* How to Log in to Wheelers ePlatform (eBooks & audiobooks):

  • Type in your User Name and Password
  • Your User Name is: FirstName.LastName, eg: Sharon.Murray (use your first name with a capital letter followed by a dot then your last name with a capital letter – no spaces)
  • Your Password is Library1 (it’s the same for all students) eg: Library1 (use a capital ‘L’ for Library followed by the number 1 – no space in between).

PLEASE NOTE: If your child has difficulty logging into our Wheelers ePlatform, please ask them to come and see Mrs Murray in the Library. Alternatively, you can email me to ask for assistance or clarification:

Sharon.Murray@education.wa.edu.au

Fun Facts About Wheelers ePlatform:

  • Each student can borrow TWO books at time for a period of TWO weeks (the same lending rules as our physical print Library).
  • The borrowed books will automatically disappear from your device and be returned as soon as the due date is
  • reached (No more overdue library books!)
  • You can return the book before the due date by pressing the RETURN button.
  • You can RESERVE items that are currently out on loan.
  • Wheelers ePlatform is a Shared Collection (we share the eBooks & audiobooks with other schools around Australia). This keeps the costs down and allows us to access a wide range of great titles.
  • We also purchase our own titles to add to our Private Collection. These titles are for the exclusive use of Landsdale Primary School students.

On the Ball …. With Mr P

Hi everybody,

Faction Leaders

Well done to all the students that nominated for a faction leader’s position. The speeches were of a high quality and I congratulate all elected nominees. I wish them luck for a busy and fulfilling year in their new leadership roles. The list of vice-captains and captains are attached.

Interschool activities- term 1

Interschool events on this term will mainly involve Year 5’s as the week these are on swimming is also on for Year 1-4’s and camp for Year 6’s.

These events are;

Academy Plate – tennis

Girls, Thursday, March 12
Boys, Friday March 13

Interschool Cricket

Thursday, March 12

Cross-Country and Faction Carnival Events modification

There will be some slight modifications to the cross-country and faction carnival events this year.

Firstly, our Legends of Landsdale’ cross-country event will become a stand-alone faction event. The top runners will still be competing for the Legends of Landsdale trophy and interschool selection, but will also receive points for their faction for each race. The winning faction overall will receive a shield, kindly donated by Margaret Quirk MLA. This event will not go towards individual or faction championship points for the faction athletic carnival.

Secondly, for our faction carnival championship events there will be only two competitors per faction selected for the jump and throw events, streamlining it with the age race running events. The champion boy and girl for each year level in Years 3-6 will be decided from their division 1 age race, long throw and long jump championship and the 400m and 800m running event.

As the cross-country race will be a standalone event, there will be no championship boy or girl awarded in Years 1 or 2. Selection for interschool, be it for cross-country or athletics will not change.

Dates for these events are;

Faction cross-country event, Thursday, May 7
Jumps, throws and distance events, Monday, August 10
Faction athletics carnival, Thursday, August 20

The athletics events in Term 3 have been brought forward a week earlier this year.

Runners Club

Runners Club commenced last Thursday and will run every Thursday on the top oval. As the oval isn’t marked, runners will run from a starting cone, around the goal posts, to another cone and back around the opposite goal posts to the starting cone. Runners have a QR code and laps will be recorded from this. Students will receive badges for achieving certain milestones. Well done to those who have started already!

Thanks everybody.

Mr.P
