12 March 2020

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Families,

Term 1 continues to be full of extra curricula activities, with swimming lessons, leadership days, funky fitness, running club, interschool cricket and tennis, and camp for our Year Sixes. To help parents keep up with all the information, please make sure you are signed up to your child’s class Dojo and the school’s Parent Link program. Both these communication avenues will provide you with all the information and reminders you need to stay on top of what’s happening.

We welcome Mrs Helen Isaacs to the teaching staff, she has taken over LA 30 from Mr Pete Hayward, who secured a deputy principal position for the remainder of the year at Subiaco Primary School. We say goodbye to Ms Cindy Addison, who has been an education assistant with us for 12 years. She has moved to Cloverdale Primary School. The new Principal appointment process is still underway, and the community will be notified when a decision has been made.

Our school P and C will also be busy this year, with many exciting activities planned. Please come along to the next general meeting on Tuesday 17th March in the staffroom from 7.30pm, and learn more about how you can become involved.

Kiss and Drive is desperate for more parent volunteers to direct traffic as they pull into the bays. It is a 20-minute commitment afterschool, with your own parking bay in the staff carpark! If you can assist once a week or fortnight, please let the front office know.

Harmony Day is next Friday. Please read the information in this newsletter about what the school has planned. A special thank you to our Year 3 teachers and parents for organising and contributing to the day.

The Telethon Kids Institute, Minderoo Foundation and CoLab have combined to create a new parenting app called Bight Tomorrows. The free Bright Tomorrows Parenting App provides learning activities, ‘in-the-moment’ advice and practical tips to parents and carers with children from birth to age five. Please see the following website for further information and details.

http://www.brighttomorrows.org.au/

Please continue to support your children on their learning journey by making sure they have a healthy lunch, routines at home that support sleep and physical play, and opportunities to be read to or listened to every school night. These make a significant difference to their school experience. If you would like further information on how to support your child don’t forget the Parenting borrowing section (LEAP) in the school library.

Until next newsletter, happy parenting!

Kind Regards,
Mrs Cass Disisto
Principal

Harmony Day Information

On Friday 20th March, our wonderful Year 3 parents, along with LA26's parents and all Year 3 teachers will be hosting a Harmony Day Food Festival for the whole school. Food items from an array of cultural backgrounds and countries will be supplied for students to purchase during recess time (10:45 - 11:10am) for either 50c or $1.00, per item. There will be no items supplied that include nuts. This is a time for us all to appreciate the glorious food that has been homemade and supplied from our wonderful parents, as well as the many cultural backgrounds we share here at Landsdale Primary School. Please come along and join us for our Harmony Day Food Festival.

NAPLAN Online 2020

Students in Years 3 & 5 will be participating in the annual NAPLAN tests in reading, writing, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.

The assessment provides parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students are performing at the time of the tests. NAPLAN is just one aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process – student grades are based on ongoing assessments made by teachers about student performance, the NAPLAN results are not necessarily considered.

This year the NAPLAN tests will be held from Tuesday 12th May to Friday 22nd May, 2020. For more information please see the pdf attached.

WA Young Readers’ Book Award

It’s WAYRBA time again! The WA Young Readers’ Book Award is an annual event that encourages children to read and vote on a range of short-listed books by top authors and illustrators. The Library now has a display of these books, on the slat wall area. Children can borrow the WAYRBA books and vote on them by filling out the voting slip inside the book cover. They can also keep the bookmark that is inside the book. This year’s titles are suitable for all age levels and reading abilities. We would love to see all our borrowers reading and voting on the WAYRBA list of 30 books.

From now until the end of September, we are offering an incentive for students to participate in this event. Every time they read and vote on one of the Award books, their name goes into the draw to win a Scholastic Book Club voucher to the value of $25. The prize will be drawn when voting closes at the end of September. Please return completed voting slips to Mrs Murray in the Library, so the votes can be recorded and entered into the draw.

You can download the WA Young Readers’ Book Award Voting Slips here, by clicking on the link below:

This year students can also nominate and vote online by clicking on the link below:

What an exciting start to the year! Thank you to our school families who continue to support the canteen and purchase student lunches.

This term we are trying new recess items along with the favourites and the kids are just loving them! Various scroll & muffin flavours, bliss balls, savoury muffins (packed with veggies) & “not so chocolate” mini cakes are walking off the counter at recess. Watch the P&C face book page for photos of what the kids are choosing from.

We are holding a Mid-Term Special Menu on Friday 20th March (Week 7) so keep an eye out for the note coming home this week.

For our Teaching staff at school, we are updating the menu from your amazing ideas you’ve presented to us! The “Teaching Only Menu” can be found on Qkr in the lunch ordering menu.

Term 2 winter menu review is underway and we are asking for your feedback! Do you have a suggestion for our menu? Do you have a vegetarian item we could add to the menu? Email lpscanteen@yahoo.com.au

With Caitlin Sabatino & Kendra McDonald looking after Roadwise & Health & Wellness Group respectively. We also have a larger number of General Members on the Committee this year which is just fantastic.

Road Wise

Kiss and Drive

We need volunteers for Monday and Tuesday afternoons to help supervise Kiss and Drive. 15-20 minutes of your time is all we ask to help the kids into cars and keep the flow of traffic moving – the bonus is you get a VIP parking bay in the staff carpark. If you’re able to help, even just once, please get in touch with the Kiss and Drive Coordinator, Caitlin on 0419 924 456. Thanks!

Roadwise Reminders

Can parents please remind/discuss the following with your children:

  • Please be mindful of blocking the roundabout when waiting for Kiss and Drive in the afternoon. Buses and local traffic still need to be able to get through.
  • To assist a better flow of traffic in the afternoon at Kiss and Drive, only the first 3 vehicles will be loaded from the passenger side.
  • For the safety of all road users, please No U-turns at Kiss and Drive on The Broadview.
  • A reminder there is No Parking on the verge of The Broadview both near the crosswalk and at the Southmead Terrace roundabout, as well as on the Warradale Terrace grassed area leading to the Rockdale Pass roundabout. These are areas that will be fined by the Ranger.
  • WALK bikes and scooters at the crosswalks and at Kiss and Drive.
  • The driveway or parking area of the service/side entrance on Warradale Terrace is not to be used as a drop off/pick up point at any time.
  • Please remember NO PARKING in the dentist car park unless you have an appointment for your child.

In the interests of keeping all our children and community members safe, we appreciate your cooperation with the safe use of our roadways and parking areas.
