13 August 2020

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Families,

Staffing Update: This update is to inform you of some changes which have occurred over the last week. Ms White will be on sick leave for the next four weeks. Mrs Kristin Bunn will be backfilling Ms White’s position over this time. In the meantime, Mrs Belinda Russell will be working in Learning Area 14 from Monday to Thursday and Mrs Carrie Bin Salleh will be with the class on Fridays.

Interschool Carnivals: A reminder to the community that a decision was made last term by the organising school and most schools involved that the Interschool Athletics Carnival would not go ahead due to the requirements of COVID 19. As an individual school we will be able to hold our Faction Athletics Carnival with adjustments and adherence to the social distancing requirements.

Uniforms: The school and the school board have been looking at our school uniforms since the beginning of this year. The main areas of focus have been the change in supplier as the supply contract from the previous supplier was ending. As a result, we were able to canvas a number of suppliers to obtain better conditions for the school and parents. Also through the Board there have been a slight change in the uniform which include the following:

Polo Shirt: This has been updated with the introduction of a navy blue panel on the either side of the shirt and made from better quality fabric.
Shorts: These will remain the similar however will be of better quality fabric.
Dress: slight update on style and a better quality fabric.

Whilst these are minimal changes these have come about through consultation with groups of students, staff and School Board over the last six months with further Board discussion at their last meeting.

Please also note that we anticipate a change-over period of 18 months to two years with the older style uniforms which should give families plenty of time to ‘wear through’ their current stock of uniforms.

Our new uniform supplier is Tudor Uniforms. Please refer further below in this newsletter for contact details.

Week 4: As I enter my fourth week at Landsdale Primary School and after visiting almost all classrooms I can honestly say that I am impressed with the teaching and learning that is taking part across the school. I am equally impressed with the friendliness of the students and their willingness to engage in conversation and share their learning with me. Thank you also to the wonderful parents who have welcomed me over this period not only at the P&C meeting and School Board meeting but also those that I met during my before and after school walk around the school grounds. Our school is highly regarded by the education community and I can see now that this is a result of the strong support that is given not only by the staff but also by the parents, students and broader community.

Year 6 Camp 2021: Parents may not be aware that school camps are not mandatory and are a voluntary event run by staff who volunteer their time. Staff do not receive additional pay to take students on camp. Given the complexities and uncertainty of COVID 19 and what lies ahead with this in the future and the ever increasing cost involved our staff have decided to change the format of the ‘camp week’. This will now involve day excursions over a series of two to three consecutive days. This will also result in more activities for the students to be involved in, less down time, better quality leadership and team building events and the cost will be less than attending an over-night camp. Some of the activities will include Archery, Canoeing, Commando Courses, Crate Stacking (Leadership), Flying Fox, Team Building (catapult build and fire), Bush Craft and Cubby Building with other activities to be added. These will be high quality activities and more time will be spent on each of these than would be the case in a live in camp situation.

In the past a number of students have not been able to attend camp due to medical, personal, cultural and/or financial reasons. This has meant that the school has had to significantly fund supervision for not only those students who attend but also for the increasing number of those that do not attend. Having a day version of the camp ensures that more students are included into the program. I have no doubt that students will enjoy this new format as many other schools follow this same approach with much success.

School Board Meeting: This was held on Monday night and I must say I was very impressed with the commitment and enthusiasm for the school that was displayed by all that attended. As we discussed at the meeting all of the parent representatives will be completing their membership cycle at the end of Term 4 this year. This will mean that we will be calling for new nominations for all five parent representative positions. I encourage you to consider nominating for a position on the School Board. More information will be forthcoming towards the end of this term and/or very early next term.

Communication/Class Dojo: I have asked all classroom teachers to invite all specialist teachers to their contact list. This will mean that parents can contact specialists directly if they need to. If you are unable to see your relevant specialist teacher’s name on your contact list please let your child’s teacher know.

Kind Regards,

Mr Josh Jashari
Principal

Art News – Alice in Wonderland Doors

The Alice in Wonderland doors installation has now finished, Alice has found her way out of Wonderland and the white rabbit has scampered off. Thank you to everyone who took part in the door hunt around school, it was wonderful to see so many families enjoying completing it together on the open afternoon. I had over 125 entries into the competition so it has taken a while to sort through them but the winners have now been drawn. Congratulations to Hayden and Savannah in LA31, Siyanna, Ellie and David in LA26, Kristee in LA16, Bon in LA25 and Qiyannah in LA11. And lastly if you are still wondering what the 13 letter phrase was ... Eat and drink me.
