From the Principal

Dear Parents and Families,

School Board Nominations 2021-2023: As you are aware our school is an Independent Public School. An Independent Public School is a public school where the principal has been given increased flexibility and responsibility to make local decisions across a range of school operations to enhance the education of outcomes of its students. Principals of Independent Public Schools have more freedom to make decisions about important matters that impact on students’ education such as student support, staff recruitment, financial management, governance and accountability.

Principals of Independent Public Schools establish school boards whose elected members support them and their communities’. Establishing a school board is an opportunity to attract a broader cross-section of people with a range of experiences and expertise. Strong community and business representation ensures the board can make an even more significant contribution to the development of the school.

The board can have an important influence on the direction of the school, with members bringing ideas and lending their expertise to strategic planning and community partnerships. The board comprises of parents, staff members and members of the broader community.

The board does not manage the day to day running of the school, make curriculum decisions, performance manage any staff, or, employ staff.

The current group of hard working parent representatives will be completing their three-year cycle at the end of Term 4 2020. These five positions will become vacant and open to nominations from any parent who will have a child enrolled at the school. The new cycle will commence in Term 1 2021 and finish in Term 4 2023.

We encourage you to nominate yourself and become a part of the school board. Induction and training will be provided.

I have sent home, to each family, a nomination form via your child. If you are interested, please complete the Candidate Profile and submit your nomination to the front office by 3:30pm Monday 7th September 2020. You will receive a Nomination Form Receipt. Please contact the office if you did not receive a copy of the nomination forms.

COVID-19: Based on the latest health advice, Phase 4 of the WA COVID-19 roadmap has been extended until Friday, 23rd October. The new tentative start date for Phase 5 will now be Saturday, 24th October (end of week 2 Term 4). A final decision on whether Phase 5 can proceed on this date, or if it can be brought forward, will be made in October by our Premier. This will now mean that schools are to continue to follow Phase 4 guidelines until further notice. Please also note that parents are able to continue to walk and drop off their child at their classroom door. Please do not enter the classroom and please leave the school grounds as soon as possible. It has been noted that some parents still prefer to continue to drop their child off at the gates to build independence and resilience. Please do so if your wish to continue this.

Kind Regards,

Mr Josh Jashari
Principal

Science Week

Ocean Project RecountBy Ashlee M and Kanchi D (with a little help from our teacher).

Last week from 15th August to 23rd August was National Science Week.

To celebrate the wonderful theme of ‘Deep Blue: innovation for the future of our oceans’, LA27, Year 4 did an ocean-themed project. We weren’t learning about the ocean, but our Global Education Projects are based on reducing plastic, packaging and waste going to landfill, so it linked really well as plastic pollution in our oceans is a very serious and rapidly growing problem. Our Science Week activities were very exciting and interesting, but extremely exhausting!! Apart from having to quickly learn a lot of new information about density, ocean zones and the creatures that live in the zones, we also had to learn and practice the activities we were going to do with the two Year 1 classes: LA 9 and LA 10 that we invited. Mrs Marrion DID NOT make things easy for us. She said it was because we needed to learn the skills of working to a real-world deadline; working as a team and thinking through problems for ourselves. Anyway, thank you to Mrs Govender and LA 9 students, and also Mrs Sage and LA 10 for coming along and joining in the noisy, messy, interesting chaos!

Oh, we also had a cool scientist - Alex H who took us on a virtual deep dive into the ocean to see some ocean monsters. Did you know, you can borrow this book ‘Ocean Monsters’ from our wonderful Mrs Murray in the Library? Just download an app called iExplore (free) so that you too can swim with whale sharks, run away from the strange-looking oarfish and watch manta rays glide through the ocean depths - RIGHT IN YOUR OWN LIVING ROOM! But watch out …. a great white shark lurks in the dark depths!

On Friday afternoon, 21 August, once the younger students came into our class, each year 1 got teamed in a pair with two Year 4 buddies. All the Year 1 students coloured an ocean creature picture which we animated by using an AR (Augmented Reality) app called ‘Quiver Vision’. Buddies also chose one other activity out of three selections: painting a window ocean picture and making two different kinds of ocean layers in a bottle.

Project 1: Painting

We painted some colourful, busy ocean scenes on the class windows using dishwashing liquid mixed in with acrylic paints. This is easy to wash off later (we hope!!). We all enjoyed it but only a few could do this activity. (Note to parents; this can get very messy and we suggest something on the wall and floor below the windows getting painted) and, maybe, a painting shirt.

Project 2: 5 Ocean Layers in a Jar

Some groups used their knowledge of density to make the 5 ocean layers in jars with everyday different types of liquids. The layers are Sunlight, Twilight, Midnight, Abyss and Trench. Different creatures can live in each zone and adapt to the conditions of light, pressure and food sources.

Project 3: 3 Ocean Layers Around a Bottle of Water

The last group cut three different shades of blue paper (for the Sunlight, Twilight and Midnight ocean zones), then taped them together on the back and around a bottle. Then they drew different ocean creatures and stuck them on the right layers. Here are some of the creatures that live in the three zones.

Sunlight = lots of plants (phytoplankton) and zooplankton (small marine animals) as well as turtles, dolphins, sharks, tuna and many more.

Twilight = lantern fish, hatchet fish, jellyfish
Midnight = angler fish (complete with a bioluminescent lure to trap food), sea cucumber, vampire squid
Abyss = cookiecutter fish, dumbo octopus, tripod fish
Trench =frilled shark, fangtooth fish, six gill shark

If you want to do these projects at home this is how and what you need.

Project 1: Mix one teaspoon of dishwashing liquid with some acrylic paint and paint on the windows! (The dishwashing liquid is there so you can wash the paint off).

Project 2:

Ingredients: (This is quite hard to explain so please watch the video at this link):

https://www.pbs.org/video/make-ocean-zones-in-a-jar-ocwshx/

Project 3:

You need; a plastic bottle, scissors, 3 shades of blue paper to represent the ocean layers: dark blue, light blue and one in between the two colours. Draw and cut creatures on paper and stick with glue or tape in the right zone. Sticky tape the layers together at the back and wrap around your bottle. Tape and fill carefully with water. Use a dropper or pipette to drop 1-2 drops of blue food colouring into your water for a feel of the ocean.

We hope you love the ocean as much as we do and would like to help protect it.

Watch these videos but watch out for the ads and don’t press on them.

Some Ocean Facts

  • Our oceans cover more than 70 per cent of the Earth's surface. ...
  • The majority of life on Earth is aquatic. ...
  • Less than five per cent of the planet's oceans have been explored. ...
  • The world's longest mountain chain is underwater. ... and you thought it was Mt. Everest!
  • There are more historic artefacts under the sea than in all of the world's museums.

Editor’s note from Mrs M: We should have put the reference source for this information because it is not in our own words, but we forgot.

SO, HOW CAN YOU HELP?

Watch this space over the next few weeks ...

Don’t use soft plastic bags where possible and try to have a compost bin at your house. Please try to not send too much rubbish to the dump because it ends up in the ocean. Now you are helping save the ocean and stopping greenhouse gases that scientists believe contribute to global warming and climate change.

Thanks Mrs Murray, Mrs Govender and LA 9, and Mrs Sage and LA 10 for making Science Week memorable … and messy!

Long Jump & Long Throw

Last Monday, August 17th, our annual jumps, throws and distance events were held for students in years 3-6. Well done to all students that participated. Despite the gloomy conditions around, you displayed excellent sportsmanship and competed in a terrific spirit.

Thank you to Timing Gates WA (TGWA), the students from Ashdale Secondary College and our faction leaders for their assistance on the day.

Below are the points spread earnt across the day. Remember there is a slight difference to the athletics carnival scoring system from 2020 as the cross-country (Legends of Landsdale) is now a standalone faction event so there will be no junior championship boy or girl awarded for students in years 1 or 2. The inaugural faction cross-country shield will be presented during the faction athletics carnival.

Faction Athletics Carnival

Our Faction Athletics Carnival has been rescheduled for Thursday, September 17th. It promises to be an enjoyable day but in these current times, a number of protocols on the day need to be adhered to.

I have attached a program and map to follow for the day’s proceedings.

The annual Faction Athletics Carnival will be held on Thursday, September 17, mostly on the school oval, with one ‘rotation’ on Warradale Reserve. We invite all parents to attend the carnival to support their children. It is however very important that we abide by the Phase 4 of the WA Roadmap to Recovery expectations as set out by the Government as informed by the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee (AHPPC). Key details include;

  1. Confirmation that there is very limited evidence of transmission of Covid19 between children in the school environment, resulting in a relaxing of the physical distancing requirements between students.
  2. Their advice that adults in schools should continue to keep up physical distancing of 1.5 metres where possible with all members of the school community continuing to practice good personal hygiene to better protect themselves and the general health of society.
  3. Stating that gathering limits are determined by WA’s reduced two square metres per person rule and that this measurement is specifically for determining the capacity of venues where adults are present.

(As the carnival is an outside event, we ask that parents remain outside as much as possible.)

Given the above information, we ask that during the day all parents:

  1. Maintain physical distancing in line with the Phase 4 guidelines.
  2. Utilise good hygiene practices including handwashing before and after activities. The school will have hand sanitiser available on the day for use of those attending,
  3. Remain behind all barriers – the circular perimeter around the oval, and do not enter the faction bays for any reason. Please speak to staff should you wish to get a message to your child.
  4. Depart the school once you have seen your child’s events.
  5. Limit the number of spectators to immediate family to view children’s events.

Phys Ed notes

Please encourage children to wear appropriate footwear and a hat when attending Physical Education lessons.

If your child is unable to participate in a Phys Ed lesson due to injury or illness, please communicate this to myself, Mr Brown or your child’s classroom teacher, preferably before the day of the lesson as I am not always able to access Dojo or e-mail during the day.

Students are able to wear their faction shirts on their ‘Phys Ed’ day as well as Thursdays for the year 3-4’s and Fridays for the year 5 and 6’s, their nominated sport days. Students can also wear their Faction t-shirt on special sporting events days in which they are competing, such as the Faction Athletics Carnival.

P&C News

Our next General Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday 1st Sept @ 7.30pm in the staffroom. Everyone is always welcome, come along to see what it’s all about, bring ideas or questions about what the P&C does or anything that you’d love to know more about. It’s the forum for parents and caregivers to get together for the benefit of all students of the school; we’re more than just about fundraising and events.

We’re excited to have the first Fathering Project event around the corner. Keep Friday 4th September in your diary and watch our P&C page for more details soon.

Quiz night update – we’re currently working on a new date for the Quiz Night. Due to postponing the event we have had more time to gather some amazing donations and prizes for the night. We are working together with our Quiz Duo and major sponsor Rimondo’s to lock in a new date. As always watch fb and we will have a flyer and notice up in the newsletter as soon as a new date is confirmed.

Children’s Crossing Audits are currently being conducted around schools; we encourage everyone to continue using them daily, the high use will help ensure our audits come back with a positive result to keep the use of both the crossings for the school.

School Community Business Directory

We are looking for expressions of interest for parents who run a small business and would like to feature in our LPS Community Business Directory.

Inspired by the Pre-primary students who were learning about Community, we want to be able to support those within our own school community by creating this business directory that would be circulated to our 550 families within the school.

The Directory will be an A5 printed booklet with an advert per business featuring the business logo, description of services and contact details. There will be a small fee charged to cover the cost of the printing, with all excess funds raised to go towards the end of year Color Run being funded by the P&C.

Expressions of Interest must be emailed to lpspandcfundraising@gmail.com by the 5thSeptember 2020.

Formal details will be distributed after this date for collation.

Always keep an eye for all things P&C on our facebook See you around school, Nat
