10 September 2020

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Families,

Class Placement Request

The school is now planning for classes and class structure for the 2021 school year. As you would imagine it is very difficult to predict enrolment numbers this far out from the beginning of next year.

Landsdale Primary School ensures classes are formed in such a way as to best meet the needs of its students. The school spends a considerable amount of time creating its class structure which is based upon the professional judgements of staff with the aim of creating the best learning environment for each student. All factors are considered when making these judgements. The best interest of all students is paramount when making placement decisions.

Parents and carers may request a specific class placement through providing the school with educational reasoning behind this request. This may be in the form of specific information about their child’s learning needs that they believe the school may not be aware of. Such information would not include any requests regarding a particular individual teacher. Please be aware that these requests may be considered but not automatically accommodated. Please email Mrs Tania Burke tania.burke@education.wa.edu.au or send a letter marked ‘Private and Confidential’ to Mrs Burke by Friday 30th October 2020.

Class lists will be formed and then reviewed by all staff and submitted to the Executive Team for further review. Following this, any changes to class placement will only be made in exceptional circumstances, however this tends to be extremely rare.

School Review 2021

The School Review is part of the Independent Public School accountability process and is done in every school on a three-year cycle. Two external reviewers from the Department will visit the school and assess the evidence provided by the school against a number of key domains.

Our school was originally set to have our review during third term this year (2020). The timing of this was affected by the COVID 19 situation where these reviews were cancelled. This gave time for the Department to also review the processes they use to undertake the School Review. Some minor changes have been made along with the selection of new Directors of School Review positions. A new timeline for schools has been sent out. We will be holding our Whole School Review during Term 1 2021. The school will be spending the rest of this term and most of next term preparing for this. This will also mean that the P&C and School Board will be meeting with the reviewers and giving feedback to them about the school. The Review Team will also be meeting with some staff and groups of students.

Carnival

Our school’s Faction Athletics Carnival will be held on Thursday 17th September 2020. As the Premier has extended the COVID 19 Phase 4 restrictions until the beginning of next term we will need to adhere to these conditions. There will be a change to the format as has been announced earlier this term, however lunch and play arrangements have been modified to enable the school to host the event. This will mean that students will play in an area designated away from the parent group during recess. They will eat their lunch in the Faction areas and then play in this area during their lunch break. Parents will need to remain within their own designated areas and not enter the student areas. More specific information regarding our Athletics Carnival can be found elsewhere in this newsletter. A very big thank you to Mr Puccinelli and Mr Brown for their efforts in organising this event.

Building Works

Currently we have three projects being planned

Tennis Court Shelter Area: This will be located at the north end of the tennis courts. A new shelter for our students will be constructed to protect them from the sun and give them a cooler space to sit during Phys Ed lessons. The construction material used for this will now be Colour Bond and coloured on both sides. This is a better option than the mesh sail material that was originally considered. We are waiting for the contractor to get back to us and there is no time frame at this stage although it should be completed during Term 4.

Science Room

Science Room: As you were informed last year the school has been successful in gaining and investing in a Science Grant which was only awarded to 200 schools across the state. The paper work for this project at our school has been completed enabling Learning Area 18 to be converted into a purpose built science room. Tenders closed on the 13th August and we should hear this week on who the successful tender is. Pre start is scheduled for mid-September and construction will take 4 weeks and should be completed before early December.

Staffroom/Medical Room

Staffroom/Medical Room: This is being upgraded and should be completed over the upcoming holidays. We should also see the Medical Room improvements being done during this time frame also. There will also be some cupboards installed in the admin area in various offices.

School Board 2021-2023 Nominations

Thank you to those parents who have nominated to be on the Board. We are finalising these over the next few days and at this stage we do not think we will need to go to an election process. I will send out more information and announce the new members next week.

Kind Regards,

Mr Josh Jashari
Principal

Year 6 Graduation

Gifted and Talented: Primary Extension and Challenge (PEAC)

Dear Parent(s)/ Guardian(s)/ Caregiver(s)

ASSESSMENT OF YEAR 4 STUDENTS FOR THE PEAC PROGRAM

The PEAC Program provides part time extension and enrichment for exceptionally able students in Years 5 and 6.

PEAC offers a range of courses that provide identified students with work that is intellectually challenging.

All students in Year 4 will have the opportunity to be assessed for suitability for the PEAC Program.

Testing at Landsdale Primary School will occur 19-23rd October 2020.

The scores from the test will be used in the selection of students for PEAC courses and extension programs during 2021 to 2022 and also to inform educational provision in schools.

If you do not wish your child to be included in the PEAC assessment, please notify the school in writing by Thursday 15th October 2020.

Yours sincerely

Natalie Bracegirdle
Deputy Principal

After School Safety

In order to ensure the safety of all students after school, parents are asked to remind their children regularly of the after school arrangements in place for them, particularly expectations around going straight to the appropriate pick-up point, including kiss and drive and out of school hours’ care. Please also remind children not to talk to strangers, or to leave the school grounds with anyone other than when it has been prearranged.

Nude Food Day: Thursday 24th September (Week 10)

Dear Parents,

Please pencil the above dates onto your calendar as we have scheduled two Nude Food Days for Term 3.

What is classified as a Nude Food lunch box?

Nude Food is simply food that is not wrapped in foil, plastic or commercial packaging.

Why are we promoting Nude Food?

We are encouraging Nude Food days here at Landsdale Primary School in an effort to reduce the amount of waste across the school, including plastic ending up in landfill.

Please see the attached information or visit the link below for more ideas.

We thank you for your continued support.

Faction Athletics Carnival

Our Faction Athletics Carnival is upon us next Thursday, September 17. It promises to be an enjoyable day but in these current times, a number of protocols on the day need to be adhered to.

I have attached a program and map to follow for the day’s proceedings.

Please remember to;

  1. Remain behind all barriers – the circular perimeter around the oval, and do not enter the faction bays for any reason. Please speak to staff should you wish to get a message to your child.
  2. Not eat your lunch with your children. Students must remain in the bays to eat their lunch.
  3. Maintain physical distancing in line with the Phase 4 guidelines.
  4. Utilise good hygiene practices including handwashing before and after activities. The school will have hand sanitiser available on the day for use of those attending.
  5. Depart the school once you have seen your child’s events.
  6. Limit the number of spectators to immediate family to view children’s events.

Below are the points spread from the field events from a few weeks ago. Remember there is a slight difference to the athletics carnival scoring system from 2020 as the cross-country (Legends of Landsdale) is now a standalone faction event so there will be no junior championship boy or girl awarded for students in years 1 or 2. The inaugural faction cross-country shield will be presented during the faction athletics carnival.

Runners Club

Congratulations to Peter in year 4 for running 200 laps (50 km!) in Runners Club. Keep up the great work and hopefully will see many more down at Runners Club every Monday morning from 810 am.

Phys Ed notes

Please encourage children to wear appropriate footwear and a hat when attending Physical Education lessons.

If your child is unable to participate in a Phys Ed lesson due to injury or illness, please communicate this to myself, Mr Brown or your child’s classroom teacher, preferably before the day of the lesson as I am not always able to access Dojo or e-mail during the day.

Students are able to wear their faction shirts on their ‘Phys Ed’ day as well Thursdays for the year 3-4s and Fridays for the year 5 and 6s, their nominated sport days. Students can also wear their Faction t-shirt on special sporting events days in which they are competing, such as the Faction Athletics Carnival.

Qkr is updated Sunday/Monday so if you’re not on fb you can see daily specials via Qkr. Specials are set to pop first after choosing the day of purchase.

Recess NEW items

Recess item favourites are no longer just the cheesie! Scrolls, muffins, mini pizza’s & slices are just some of the freshly prepared items the kids have choices of now at the canteen. If you like to send $2 from time to time for a special treat, they don’t just have ice cream in sight any more, many are loving the recess choices more and more!!
