11 March 2021

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Families,

Harmony Week

Harmony Week is a time to celebrate Australian multiculturalism, and the successful integration of migrants into our community.

Australia is one of the most successful multicultural countries in the world and we should celebrate this and work to maintain it.

Harmony Week is about inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, regardless of cultural or linguistic background, united by a set of core Australian values.

Orange is the colour chosen to represent Harmony Week. Traditionally, orange signifies social communication and meaningful conversations. It also relates to the freedom of ideas and encouragement of mutual respect. We can choose to wear something orange during Harmony Week to show their support for cultural diversity and an inclusive Australia.

Our School will be celebrating Harmony Week next week. Students may wear their traditional dress on Friday 19th March or they may wish to wear the colours of their national flag or just wear something orange. Children will also be completing lesson activities during the week celebrating Harmony week.

School Review

We welcome Ms Kim McCollum, Director Public School Review and Ms Fiona Blundell, Principal Armadale Primary School (Peer Reviewer) to our school. Ms McCollum and Ms Blundell will be meeting with groups of parents and staff and students throughout the day. The reviewers will be focusing on the school’s operation and performance over the last three years.

There are five key areas that will be looked at during the day.

  1. Relationships and Partnerships
  2. Learning Environment
  3. Leadership
  4. Use of Resources
  5. Teaching Quality
  6. Student Achievement and Progress

The school has been asked to provide evidence against these areas prior to the schools visit. The school visit is to substantiate the school’s claims and evidence. The reviewers will also meet with the Board Chair, P&C President, other parent representatives and administration team.

Camp

Thank you to our wonderful senior staff for their efforts in making our year 6 camp packed with fantastic activities. We had the highest number of participants involved for quite a number of years. I have received some very positive feedback from many of the students who thoroughly enjoyed their day and it was great to hear how some of them pushed themselves to take on challenges they would not normally attempt and the sense of achievement that went along with this. Our year 6 students are a great group of students and it is hoped that the camp activities undertaken will strengthen their bond not only with each other but also with the staff during 2021.

Assemblies

We will see our first junior assembly next week. Please note the following as per last week’s newsletter:

As with earlier correspondence to parents we have recommenced our assemblies, however, we have to take into consideration the requirements of the current stage 4 COVID restrictions on the number of adults that may be in one inside area. As a result of this we have limited the number of visitors at school assemblies.

For the present (subject to change at any time dependent on changes to WA Government regulations and support from families to adhere to the school’s request) we will only have two attendees for each student in the presenting class, and two attendees for each student who is receiving an award presented at the assembly.

Assemblies will be weekly commencing at 2pm on Wednesday and concluding at 2:30pm (Early Close). A Junior and Senior Assembly will alternate on a weekly. Please refer to the school calendar for assembly dates.

Kind regards,

Josh Jashari
Principal

NAPLAN Online – Information for Parents

Students in Years 3 & 5 will be participating in the annual NAPLAN tests in reading, writing, conventions of language (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.

The assessment provides parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students are performing at the time of the tests. NAPLAN is just one aspect of a school’s assessment and reporting process – student grades are based on ongoing assessments made by teachers about student performance, the NAPLAN results are not necessarily considered.

This year the NAPLAN tests will be held from Tuesday 11th May to Friday 21st May, 2021. The school’s testing timetable for testing will be provided early in Term 2. For more information please see the pdf attached.

P&C Packed with Goodness Workshop

Some may have noticed over the past few months our Crossing Guard placements have been under review. Multiple surveys are undertaken at our crossings at both morning and afternoon times. It’s important to note that our Crossing Guards are there and should be used for the safety of your children and yourself in getting to and from the school site. Our last review noted 22 parents with children crossing north of the Brookway Retreat crossing during a review that were then not counted. These numbers could potentially influence whether we retain our crossing guards or not. Please remember when crossing near to these points to please use them.

We have a Vice President! A huge thank you and welcome to Fiona Holmes for taking on the role. She’s one very busy mum and small business owner and we are certainly grateful. She brings with her some fab experience to the P&C team, we are looking forward to swearing her in at our next general meeting.

Our Parenting Workshops this March ticket sales have exceeded our expectations! Thank you to all the parents who have purchased early free tickets to all 3 of our workshops. There is still time with limited seat availability left. See the posters attached for all the details.

Our Lads have their first event for the year also this Sunday 14th March, Skate Jam @ Warradale Park. See the attached poster for all the details.

Election Sausage sizzle is on this weekend Saturday 13th March. We’d love your help and seeing you on the day to buy a snag. Cluster schools are all vying for the top honours of the Cluster Cup. Come and join in the fun and vote LPS P&C #democracy sizzle No1 on Saturday! If your able to assist see our signup roster, from cutting onions, esky borrowing to helping on the day, every little bit helps.

Our next General meeting is Tuesday 16th March @ 7.30pm in the staffroom, we’d love to have more new faces come along!

If you see me at school, please come and say hi would love to hear feedback or your ideas for the P&C in 2021.

Kiss & Drive

Thank you to all the parents that have so far volunteered to help manage Kiss and Drive. We cannot do this without your help. We have filled the roster for the next two weeks. I still require at least 15 more volunteer parents from Years 5 & 6 to cover the 1st Term roster from 8th March to 2nd April 2021. If you haven’t done Kiss and Drive helping before and are unsure of what is required, please do not hesitate to contact your Kiss and Drive Co-ordinator, Darshana Kika, on lpspandcroadwise@gmail.com.

We also require volunteers from Year 3 & 4 parents to cover Term 2 from 19th April to 2nd July. You can start putting your names in from now.

Please remember that the Kiss and Drive and traffic wardens have been designed for your child’s safety. Only use the designated Kiss and Drive Zone on The Broadview to drop off and pick up your children. We have noticed parents temporarily parking opposite the gates on Warradale Terrace and letting their children jump out of the car and cross the road. This presents a real safety hazard. Use of this gate requires parents to park their vehicles in designated parking bays.

Once again thank you very much for the time you are volunteering for this project to be a success.

Message from the Children’s Crosswalk Attendant

The children’s crossing is in place to ensure your children safely cross the road. Parents are encouraged to be a good example to their children. Please do not encourage your children to cross further up the road as it is a busy road at the start of the day and dangerous.

Hats are to protect your children from the sun. Please also encourage your children to wear their hats outside school grounds as the crosswalk attendant has noticed only 25% of students are doing so.

Kingsway Junior Football Club

Kingsway Junior Football Club is planning 2 exciting Come & Try sessions at Warradale Reserve Landsdale. The sessions will be held on Sunday 11th April and Sunday 18th April. There will be a mixed session between 9am and 10am, a girls’ only session between 10:15am and 11:15pm and a Starkick session between 11:30am and 12:30pm.

The presentation would consist of some of the weekly activities from the Auskick 2.0 program which promotes having fun and everyone getting their hands on the football.

We are asking all parents to register their interest by emailing auskickcoordinator@kingswayjfc.com.au to ensure we have good numbers to run the event.

Footy Fun is a program tailored for the younger kids with heaps of fun and exciting games that will give the kids some basic skill to get them ready for Auskick.
