10 June 2021

From the Principal

Swimming

Our Year 1 to Year 4 students attended swimming over the last two weeks and whilst the weather was cool and wet on occasions our students were very enthusiastic. The feedback I received from Craigie Leisure Centre and the swimming instructors was very positive with some wonderful comments about our students’ behaviour and the way they generally conducted themselves. Congratulations to the many students who moved on to their next stage. We will be forwarding our preference to have swimming either in Term 1 or Term 4 next year, however there are no guarantees that this request will be met.

Leave

I will be on Long Service Leave from June 21 to July 2 (Weeks 10 and 11). Mrs Bracegirdle will assume the Acting Principal role over this timeframe.

Cluster Lightning Carnival

It was quite evident on my rounds of the various games on the day that the students absolutely enjoyed the opportunity to represent their school in their respective sports. Whilst it was a very cold day, especially out in the open, the students certainly showed they were up to the task of participating at their best. I was really pleased to see the sportsmanship being displayed by all teams. We certainly have some very skilled students and it was great to see them shine.

Dress Code Clarification

At our last School Board meeting the School Board made a very minor addition and some clarification of our Uniform Policy. The following has been included:

“Fad” clothing or accessories will not be permitted e.g. bunny ear headbands, fluro/bright socks or other items deemed to be opposed to the spirit and intent of the school’s student dress code.

Socks: Short white, black or navy socks.

Tights: White, black or navy

Kind regards,

Josh Jashari
Principal

Online Awareness

Teachers and parents/guardians need to be aware of the digital trends that young people are following that can affect their social and emotional wellbeing. Children’s online use is now more centred around mobile phones than computers. Many of the latest social media apps that children access are not meant for children under 13. Most parents would not be happy letting their primary school age child play and interact with older teens and adults they don’t know in a physical setting however allow it in an online setting without supervision.

This can have an impact on children through an increase in friendship issues, confusion, anger and anxiety over things happening and shared online. Teachers continually incorporate lessons on online awareness and safety into their programs, however we need you as parents and guardians to act too, for the safety and health and well being of your children.

There are 3 key strategies to keeping your children safe online, they are:

  1. Be engaged, open and supportive: share online time with your child, talk about favourite games sites etc. Keep the lines of communication open and reassure your child that if they are having issues you will help them.
  2. Set some rules: ensure your child has input to the rules however consider age appropriate consistent rules eg. What sites and social interaction sites are appropriate, no devices in the bedroom, devices off after bedtime.
  3. Use available technology: get to know the devices they use, set up parental controls and monitor and control screentime. Research on reliable sites what you need to know and monitor.

Roadwise Committee

I have noticed in the mornings during Kiss and Drive some children are taking a bit longer to come out of their cars. Understandably things do happen. If this is the case please do drive RIGHT UP to the front of Kiss n Drive rather than block other cars behind. This way traffic is still flowing.

If you are approaching the Kiss and Drive bays, please give way to the cars that have already dropped their children and are exiting. This also it keeps the traffic flowing smoothly.
