21 October 2021
From the Principal
Dear Parents and Families,
NAPLAN
As you may be aware the 2021 NAPLAN data was released at the end of last week of last term. As a school we continued to make very positive gains and our achievement remained at, and mostly higher than, like schools and WA schools in almost all areas. This is indicating that what we are doing at Landsdale Primary School is working and that the programs are ensuring that our students are achieving at a high standard. The school will be further unpacking the data during our School Development Day on Friday 22nd October. This will help inform and set new targets for the 2022-2024 Business Plan. The School Board will also have input into this.
School Security
Over the last twelve months there has been an increase in damage to the school caused by intruders arriving at the school on weekends or over holiday periods. The latest was the trashing of two of classrooms over the last holiday period and a break in to our covered assembly area over the weekend. The school, with support from Margaret Quirk MLA, has purchased a number of security cameras. These are currently being installed around the school and will be activated within the next few weeks. These will run 24/7 and have very good night vision capabilities. It is hoped that these will deter future unwanted persons to our school. As this is only part of the solution we ask that our community keep a close eye on the school premises.
If you live close to our school and see or hear suspicious behaviour, please immediately contact School Watch Security or the Police.
Who to Contact:
School Watch Security T:1800 177 777
Police T: 131 444
The most important times for you to be vigilant are during school holidays as schools are unattended and therefore more vulnerable than usual to crime.
Keep in mind that schools are generally large physical areas with multiple “blind spots”. If you hear unusual noises from within a school, such as glass breaking or banging noises, this might mean people are up to no good.
Look for unusual vehicles parked at a school on weekends or during holidays.
Watch for groups “hanging around” on school grounds. This should not occur and can be one of the starting points for crime to occur.
We appreciate your support.
Facilities Survey
Thank you to those parents who responded to this survey at the end of last term. Whilst we did not get as many responses as we had hoped for we still had enough to provide valued feedback that will assist in developing our Facilities Improvement Plan for 2022-2024.
Whilst analysing the data it was evident that there were concerns about the signage (or lack of) around the school. Parents comments include:
“If you are new to the school there is no signage. Signage directing to library, admin office, music room, etc would make it easier.”
“The school is like a maze with no signage at all.”
“Only the admin building is identifiable.”
Seating at the Assembly area for both students and parents was also identified. The comments centred around the cleanliness of the floor area. The area is used for lunch at lunchtime and then used for the assembly. The school will look at ways to improve this issue.
The full analysis and Facilities Plan will be presented to the Board for discussion as soon as a draft is developed.
Class Placement Request 2022
The school is now planning for classes and class structure for the 2022 school year. As you would imagine it is very difficult to predict enrolment numbers this far out from the beginning of next year.
Landsdale Primary School ensures classes are formed in such a way as to best meet the needs of its students. The school spends a considerable amount of time creating its class lists which is based upon the professional judgements of staff with the aim of creating the best learning environment for each student. All factors are considered when making these judgements. The best interest of all students is paramount when making placement decisions.
Parents and carers may request a specific class placement through providing the school with educational reasoning behind this request. This may be in the form of specific information about their child’s learning needs that they believe the school may not be aware of. Such information would not include any requests regarding a particular individual teacher. Please be aware that these requests may be considered but not automatically accommodated. Please email Mrs Tania Burke (tania.burke@education.wa.edu.au) or send a letter marked ‘Private and Confidential’ to Mrs Burke by Friday 29th October 2021.
Class lists will be formed and then reviewed by all staff. They will then be submitted to the Executive Team for further review. Following this any change to class placement will only be made in exceptional circumstances, however this tends to be extremely rare.
Composite/Split Classes 2022
Over the last term we have been taking Kindergarten enrolments for 2022. I am pleased to say at this point we have one hundred students enrolled already. We have also been making predictions on the structure of classes across the rest of the school for 2022. We have no doubt, and as is the case in almost all schools, that we will have split or composite classes occurring. The number of these will be very reliant on the enrolment numbers gained during the first week of school. Until then we can only make predictions on what we think the numbers will be. We take into consideration the school’s past enrolment history, information supplied to us by 2021 families who may be leaving or entering the school, the number of building activity within the school’s intake area and information that is supplied to us through the Department of Education. This information is then assessed and we make predictions on the number of classes and class structure throughout the school. We develop three scenarios of these class structures. During Term 4 of this year we will be organising our staffing to ensure we have these scenarios catered for. This is not only for teaching staff but also non-teaching staff.
Last year I produced an information sheet for parents detailing research behind the benefits of composite/split classes. Please view this through the following link:
Kind regards,
Josh Jashari

1-1 Laptop Program for 2022
Is your child entering Year 4 in 2022 or are you considering purchasing a device for your year 5 or 6 child? Read on!
Our parent funded 1-1 Laptop program ensures our students have the best opportunities to acquire essential skills in digital technologies and STEM for their future. We recognise and value the parents of our senior students’ commitment to their children’s education.
Parents have the option of choosing the MacBook Air M1 or the iPad 10.2” for the program. Teachers, students and our parent representatives all strongly recommended the MacBook as the school’s preferred device.
The response from parents this year continued to be overwhelmingly positive, with 82% of students having their own device, and of those, all but one, were MacBooks.
For 2022 we continue to recommend the MacBook Air as the preferred device, while including the option of the iPad; there is also a leasing option for both devices.
We recommend the MacBook Air over the iPad for the following reasons, the MacBook:
- is sturdier and has greater longevity, students often using their laptops well into their secondary schooling.
- has stronger parental controls and Apple applications for teacher supervision of student use.
- is more powerful and has more features within applications common to both Mac and iPad eg. Pages, Garageband, iMovie, Google Suite and Microsoft office 365.
- is easier to use for staff and students when accessing tools for learning like the internet, Google Workspace and network resources.
- has a larger screen and keyboard.
We partner with Winthrop Australia to obtain the best educational prices and onsite technical support. They provide a convenient and easy online portal for you to order a device for your child. If you source a device elsewhere consider the portal information to compare accurately. Visit the Winthrop Portal for more information.
Prior to purchasing a device, please attend one of our parent information sessions for more information and discussion with our 1-1 leadership team:
Please click the link to choose the dates and times you can attend the Information Forums for the 1-1 Program: Forum Dates and Times

Remote Learning Plan
The Education Department has requested all schools prepare a plan to support our students and school community if, in the future a school closure should happen, and remote learning is required.
A part of this plan requires your feedback, as parents/carers of our students, to understand your circumstances should a school closure occur and what assistance you would require from the school. Please click on the link below to take a short survey to provide the information from you that will inform our planning.

P&C News
As we welcome everyone back into term 4 we wish to invite everyone along to our last “official” meeting of the year. Next Tuesday 26th Oct @ 7:30pm in the staffroom. We look forward to seeing everyone there! It’s one of the last chances to see the committee in action before the end of the year and see how you might like to fit in around the table Come and see what it’s all about being that all positions are declared vacant at the AGM in Feb 2022. All executive positions will be up for grabs!
Congratulations to LA22 for taking out the top honours of the first class to have the most online profiles with 90% of the class signed as we headed back into term 4. Kindy you have until this Friday before we award yours!
To recap, student booklets headed home for our students’ major fundraiser for the year. Not only is this a special event for us as we get to have fun but it’s our way of securing much needed funds to be able to give back to school. With the past COVID years and no fundraising we’d love to be able to help again our teachers with their wishes for 2022. Sign up your profile at the link below:

Roadwise Committee
Welcome to Term 4! Where has the time gone?
Thank you to all the parents that came forward in Term 3 for Kiss n Drive. An extra special thanks to Troy Kenny as he is the 2nd dad to volunteer so far this year.
The winners for Term 3 $10 canteen vouchers are Sharon Pearl and Linda Lacatori. Well done!
In Term 4 we still have heaps of open spots on the roster. Please can Year 1-4 parents jump online and put your names down. There are only LESS than 30 spots to fill. This time we have a much wider year group and still it’s proving hard to find volunteers.
https://signup.zone/landsdaleps-kissndrive
We are still observing parents letting their kids out of the cars from the middle of the road. This is both dangerous and causes unnecessary delays and frustration to other parents who are trying to do the right thing. Please refrain from this practice and use the designated Kiss n Drive or parking spots, before letting your kids out of the car.
Please remember in the afternoons children are only allowed to enter cars number 1, 2 and 3 in the Kiss n Drive bays. Car number 4 must drive right to the front of Kiss n Drive.
Drive safely everyone and don't forget to use your INDICATORS to show your intentions when exiting, entering or turning all around the school.
Regards,
Darshana
