From the Principal
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
School Open Night (Kindergarten-Year 6)
We are looking forward to having our School Open Night this term. This will be in Week 9, Wednesday 14th September from 4:30 to 6:30pm. It will follow the same format as in previous years.
Classroom teachers will open their classrooms in a learning journey format, with activities and challenges for students to undertake with their parents. These activities reflect the learning that occurs in classrooms and allows parents to experience current curriculum content and school priorities. Specialist staff will also be providing experiences at various locations around the school. Each parent will receive a passport to help them navigate their way around the activities.
We will also be asking parents to contribute to our Parent Survey. We really would like to see all our families support this by completing the survey. You will be able to access the survey online in classrooms or in the Library.
Parents please be aware that this will not be a time to have an interview with your child’s teacher. Should you wish to do this you are welcome to make an appointment for a meeting on another date.
Book Week
This year’s Book Week theme is “Dreaming with eyes open…”. It speaks to children’s sense of curiosity and imagination, aligning with the Children’s Book Council of Australia’s aim to encourage a love of reading throughout childhood years.
Students will be doing Book Week Activities in class and in our library. Books shortlisted by the Children’s Book council are on display in the library for our teachers to read to our students during library sessions.
Our Book Week Parade was a fantastic success last year, however because of the clash with the sports carnival we have postponed the parade until the last day of term which will make it a fantastic way to finish the term.
Paul Litherland (Cyber Safety)
Paul visited our school last Thursday to speak to our senior students. Paul is regarded as one of Australia’s leading Key-Note Speakers on Internet Awareness. Paul has had coalface experience working in the Technology Crime Investigation Unit of the WA Police Force. He was able to provide our students with up to date technically relevant knowledge about interacting online safely and being more aware of the information that is being given to ‘friends’ on-line. He also indicated that safety on the internet shouldn’t just be mum and dads and/or the teacher’s responsibility and students should also take ownership by being responsible. His key message was “It’s not what program (or app) we use on the internet but more about how we use it”.
He was able to engage our students using real life stories, being non-judgemental and honest with our students.
As part of the Ashdale Cluster of School’s focus on Student Wellbeing Paul held a session for parents last week at Ashdale College giving relevant information on how to support students in being responsible and more aware of the online environment. More than a hundred parents attended this from the cluster.
Faction (Main) Carnival
The Faction Carnival will be held this Friday 26th August and I know the students are very excited. They are busily undertaking last minute practices during their recess and lunch breaks. We look forward to seeing as many parents, grandparents, uncles and aunties attend on the day.
Kind Regards,
Josh Jashari

Webinar for Parents
Michael Grose presents: Changing parenting gears for the teenage years. Watch from any device, any location. For more information please see the link below.
LPS BYOD: iPad/Macbook
Our BYOD program provides students with a powerful tool to enable them to be creative and innovative in their learning and practice being responsible users of technology. The school has embedded the program in Year 4-6 classes to enhance all curriculum areas and enable more effective teaching strategies to be used by teachers. When transitioning to secondary school our students have the high-level skills already to be creators of technology solutions and are well-informed users, which aligns with our whole Cluster planning and confirmed by the achievements of past and present students.
Parents support their own child, and other students’ educational journey, through purchasing a Macbook or iPad for their child to use at school and at home. The high support of the program by parents means that the school can provide a device to all students in Year 4-6 as well as the supporting infrastructure that enables uninterrupted access to high level learning.
Parent support is what underpins the success of the program and your feedback to the school is always valued. Thank you to the parents who took the latest survey in the newsletters. The feedback has been discussed by a group of interested parents and staff and we have had productive discussions as a result. The following improvements/changes to the program have happened, or are in progress, due to the Parent Survey feedback and our discussions:
- More information about the program will be provided to parents of students in year levels earlier than our current focus on parents of students in Year 3. This will enable a better understanding of the program and assist parents to plan ahead in an informed way.
- A change of the name of the program to reflect the recommended devices clearly.
- Information provided in parent’s preferred communication mediums eg. Newsletter, Website, Dojo, in person information sessions and a comprehensive Information Booklet covering all the aspects of the program.
- We will also ensure the work the students are doing using their devices and the fabulous instructional strategies the teachers are able to employ due to the program are more visible to parents.
- An improved purchasing portal reflecting the device choice evenly and additional assistance with finances, such as a payment plan.
- More detailed information on both devices for educational purposes to enable an informed choice, including specifications if considering pre-owned devices.
- Further feedback via the school survey on open night and feedback from teachers and students via a survey.
- Clearer communication at the start of the program for parents of Year 4 students about requirements for joining the Mobile Device Management System and reinstate Parent Workshops now COVID restrictions are eased.
Our parent funded BYOD: iPad/Macbook program ensures our students have the best opportunities to acquire essential skills in digital technologies and STEM for their future. We recognise and value the parents of our senior students’ commitment to their children’s education.
Teachers, students and our School Board recommended the MacBook as the school’s preferred device, with the effective option of an iPad. Both devices have the same suite of applications and can complement each other in the educational setting.
The response from parents this year continued to be overwhelmingly positive, with 85% of students having a personal device, all Macbook Air.
For 2023 we continue to recommend the MacBook Air as the preferred device, while including the very good option of the iPad; there is also a leasing or payment plan option for both devices.
We recommend the MacBook over the iPad for the following reasons, the MacBook:
- is sturdier and has greater longevity, students often using their laptops well into their secondary schooling.
- has stronger parental controls and Apple applications for teacher supervision of student use.
- has more powerful features within applications common to both Mac and iPad eg. Pages, Garageband, iMovie, Google Suite and Microsoft office 365.
- is easier to use for staff and students when accessing tools for learning like the internet, Google Workspace and network resources.
- has a larger screen and keyboard.
We partner with Winthrop Australia to obtain the best educational prices and onsite technical support. They provide a convenient and easy online portal for you to order a device for your child. There is no obligation to use this portal however, if you source a new device elsewhere we recommend you consider the portal model and educational price to compare accurately. Visit the Winthrop Portal for more information.
Prior to purchasing a device, please attend one of our parent information sessions for more information and/or talk with our 1-1 leadership team to find out all the considerations and recommendations.
Our focus on Internet Awareness and Safety Online is continual through our health program. In addition each Year we have Paul Litherland present to our Year 5 & 6 students to increase their knowledge and awareness of how to keep themselves safe online and to make informed decisions about social media. Year 4 students do age specific lessons on cybersafety during the year. Paul also presents a cluster wide parent and community session at Ashdale Secondary College to give parents the knowledge and strategies to help their children stay safe. If you missed it this year I hope you look out for the session next year.
Science Week @ Landsdale PS

NATIONAL SCIENCE WEEK 2022 was celebrated between the 13th and 21st August 2022. The topic was 'Glass, More Than Meets The Eye'.
LA27 decided to select some of the recommended activities from the National Science Week Teachers' Resource Book and work in groups to explore, experiment, invent and innovate some glass-themed activities. Some of the activities we completed were:
- invisible glass,
- stained glass edible cookies,
- kaleidoscopes,
- solar panels, and
- a marble run
Before Friday, we did a bit of planning and Mrs Marrion did a lot of shopping. We planned for 2 hours of activities on Friday 19th August, but needed a third hour to discuss some of the things that worked well and some of the things we could improve next time, as well as look at what others did... and, of course, eat our edible stained-glass cookies!
We kids had an exciting day, but we didn’t know we were learning Maths and English. Thank goodness we had the amazing Ms Boulton, our Education Assistant to work with the stained-glass cookie group. She even gave up her recess break time to help us. We did lots of measuring and weighing with butter, sugar and flour. Read on to find out more and see some pictures.

Make your own kaleidoscope (by Tara, Joel and Mrs M)
Isabella F, Joel, Diya and Tara made a kaleidoscope. Mrs M had to find out about acrylic mirror and finally got some from Bunnings in Landsdale. She was afraid to cut it, even after watching a video, because it was only 1mm thick and kept shattering! We had a few problems using the acrylic mirror strips (2cm wide and 15 cm long) to make a triangular prism because we didn't read the instructions carefully and put the mirror surface outside instead of inside. The other problem was that we had to combine 2 different ways of making the kaleidoscope after watching a video. After testing it, we realised it didn't work so had to re-read the instructions. Luckily, we managed to destroy some cheap magnifying glasses to make lenses! During the process, we had to break two magnifying glasses so we could put some colourful beads between their lenses and tape them up. Mrs M cut up some present wrapper tubing. Our matching number sentence to get four equal pieces of tubing (after using a metre ruler to measure the tube) was 70cm divided by 4 people = 17.5 cm but we rounded this to 17 cm tubes for each of us. Then we taped the homemade lenses filled with colourful beads to one end of the tube. Next, we put our acrylic mirror triangular prism inside the tubes. Finally, we put another single magnifying glass plastic lens as a cover to the bottom end of the present wrapper tube. Last of all, we looked excitedly in our science week project and saw a kaleidoscope! We were pretty impressed with our success after a tricky start. Next time we will try to solve more problems as we go. Mrs Marrion is not scared of cutting acrylic mirror anymore!!
Look at the picture of Diya and Tara with their kaleidoscopes.
Invisible Glass
Did you know that if you fill one glass with oil and one with water, then put a smaller Pyrex (a type of glass) object like a stirring rod into both the oil and water, the Pyrex stirring rod will disappear in the oil but not in the water? That is because Pyrex and oil have the same 'refractive index' - that means they bend light the same way when passing from one medium to another. Some people tried to put food colouring in the oil and water, and it looked like dots far apart from each other. This group demonstrated their experiment to a few other students.
The people who did this experiment finished early and then tried to build a marble run. However, they used about 1 million kilometres of duct tape!!! They needed to plan a stronger marble run design, although they did use some inventive ideas to create a long raft-like structure and some wooden guides to get the marble run going.
Look at the cool pictures below - especially the invisible glass!
Solar cars
Jamie and Brody wanted to explore and create with solar panels, but it was such as cloudy day, so they decided to use batteries and motors and worked out how to get their wheels turning. The learned a lot about making electric circuits and will hopefully be able to design a car with a solar panel on a sunnier day. See them below.
Stained-Glass cookies
First, we had to measure out and weight butter, plain flour, caster sugar and mix these together to make the cookie dough. The dough wasn't forming so we could roll it out, so we added some milk that Mrs M stole from the staff room. Then we pressed and rolled out the soft dough and used cookie cutters to make big cookies and then smaller cutters to cut out a shape in the middle. Rachit did a great job of smashing up the boiled lollies and lollypops in Mrs M's mortar and pestle to make the 'stained-glass' part of the cookies. We put the crushed colourful lollies in the middle and baked our cookies. The melted lollies stuck to the baking paper so next time we will not use baking paper. We needed to make the cookies bigger as the small ones were a bit brown, but they tasted amazing!
We had a great day, but the class was a PIGSTY (metaphor)!!
Tune in to the next newsletter to find out about our Book Week BOOK CAFE on Wednesday 24th August to celebrate Book Week. We will be reading and sharing some of the shortlisted Book Week picture books (including 2 of the winners) with a Year 1 and Year 2 class (Mrs Govender and Mrs Lane's) students. The best part is Mrs Murray has kindly let us eat nibblies in the library while we enjoy sharing the picture books and doing some Book Creator activities on the iPads - just like a real Cafe!!
Sports News …. With Mr Baggio
Congratulations to Emily H for achieving 100 laps in the Monday Running Club.
Faction Carnival – Friday 26th August
Parking: Please avoid parking in staff car parks and it is recommended you do not park on private driveways or on verges as fines have been given in previous years. This is a council matter, not a school initiative.
Spectators: Bunting will surround all of the activities at the Faction Carnival and for the smooth running of all events we ask that spectators stay on the outside. Students are able to sit with families during recess and lunch, but must return to their faction bays as soon as those breaks are over.
School grounds & playgrounds: As all supervising teachers will be on the oval, the school grounds and playgrounds are strictly out of bounds for students and others attending for the duration of the carnival.
Dogs: Dogs are not permitted on school grounds at any time during the carnival.
Smoking: The school and oval grounds are always strictly no smoking areas.
Dismissal: We do ask that all students stay until the very end for presentations. Once these presentations are over. students will head back to class to be dismissed by classroom teachers. If you need to take your child home earlier, you must do this through the office as per a normal school day.
We look forward to seeing all of the support from family and friends on the day.
