8 September 2022

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

COVID Changes

From Friday 9th September, public health measures will ease. The isolation period for COVID-19 positive cases and close contacts will reduce from 7 days to 5 days, provided they are free of symptoms at the time they leave isolation. Mask requirements for public and passenger transport have also changed.

People who test positive for COVID-19 must isolate for a minimum of 5 days and can leave isolation if they no longer have symptoms. People who are still symptomatic must remain in isolation until symptoms clear.

Close contacts with no symptoms can continue to attend school and do not have to isolate for the 5 days if they:

  • undertake a daily Rapid Antigen Test (RAT)
  • wear a mask outside the home (Year 7 and above).

Testing for COVID-19 for students who are symptomatic or as a close contact, remains an effective way to limit the spread of COVID-19 in our schools. If you need additional RATs, please contact us.

Please let the school know if your child tests positive for COVID-19 or is a close contact.

Masks will no longer be required to be worn on public or passenger transport. Masks are an important measure to reduce transmission and are still encouraged to be worn in crowded indoor settings when people are unable to physically distance. Students and staff can choose to wear a mask at school, at any time.

School Open Night (Kindergarten-Year 6)

We are looking forward to having our School Open Night next week (Week 9, Wednesday 14th September) from 4:30 to 6:30pm. It will follow the same format as in previous years.

Classroom teachers will open their classrooms in a learning journey format, with activities and challenges for students to undertake with their parents. These activities reflect the learning that occurs in classrooms and allows parents to experience current curriculum content and school priorities. Specialist staff will also be providing experiences at various locations around the school. Each parent will receive a passport to help them navigate their way around the activities.

We will also be asking parents to contribute to our Parent Survey. We really would like to see all our families support this by completing the survey. You will be able to access the survey online in classrooms or in the Library.

Parents please be aware that this will not be a time to have an interview with your child’s teacher. Should you wish to do this you are welcome to make an appointment for a meeting on another date.

Workforce Update

As you may be aware the school has completed a Teaching Pool 2023 selection process. Interviews were held and completed over the last few weeks. A pool of very suitable applicants has been formed. We will now look at our planning to determine who and how many applicants will be appointed from this pool in 2023. The Music Teacher Pool and the Art Teacher Pool will be readvertised over the next few weeks and we hope to announce these as soon as we can.

Faction Carnival Thank You

This was such a fabulous day. Not only was the weather perfect for a Sports Carnival it was well organised by our Physical Education Specialists, Mr Baggio and Mr Brown. I had no doubt that all students who participated thoroughly enjoyed the day. (Congratulations to Grevillea). A big thank you to our P&C and Canteen staff who organised refreshments on the day and well done to our wonderful parents for dressing up in their faction colours in support of the event. I know our students really appreciated this.

Lastly a special thank you to the staff who turned up at 6am to help with the preparation on the day. A huge thank you to all involved.

Our Interschool Athletics (Main) Carnival will be held on Thursday 15th September at Carnaby Rise Primary School. The Inter-School Jumps, Throws and Distance events will be held on Tuesday 13th September (am), also at Carnaby Rise Primary School.

Kind Regards,

Josh Jashari
Principal

Faction Athletics Carnival

The 2022 Landsdale Faction Athletics Carnival was perhaps the most enjoyable that I’ve experienced in my 9 years as an educator. A smooth set-up at the crack of dawn courtesy of our amazing staff, followed by a day full of athletic excellence, impressive sportsmanship and a very enthusiastic community of students and families. You can’t ask for much more than that!

The final results were closer than ever with Grevillea retaining their shield for a 3rd consecutive year by only 16 points, while Hovea took out the Sportsmanship trophy. Banksia were also awarded the ‘Legends of Landsdale’ Cross-Country shield on the day, finally breaking Grevillea’s reign by the smallest of margins.

Thank you to everyone who came to support and well done to the students who gave their very best effort from start to finish.

Monday Running Club

Congratulations to Lachie F & Linc W for hitting the 200 lap milestone in our Monday Running Club.

LA27 Book Cafe

LA27 student writing represents our journey through the writing process: planning, drafting, editing and publishing. Students used feedback to improve their writing but are still developing skills for writing for an external, authentic audience.

Book Café 2022

On Wednesday the 24th of August, LA27 year 3 hosted a book café in Landsdale Primary School’s library because it was Book Week. LA10 Ms Sealy’s (relief for Mrs Govender year 1) class, Mrs Marrion’s (our teacher) class and Mrs Lane’s class (year 2) participated in our book café. A book café is where classes come into the library and they taste books. (not actually eating the books though)!

First, we did prep in class and set up in the library, Mrs Lane’s class came into the library and one person from each group read the blurb to all the year twos. All the year twos chose a book and we took them to the desk we were working at. Then we read the book to them and answered the questions on Book Creator. We had cheese blocks, apple slices, grapes, strawberries, sausage rolls, party pies, strawberry lamingtons and cupcakes.

After that, Mrs Govender’s class came into the library and the person that came to my group was called Shivin. He rated me and Jayden’s book When The Waterhole Dries Up ten out of ten! When The Waterhole Dries Up is a book about a dusty boy who lived in the out back who was trying to have a bath but all these Australian animals kept coming into the bath but then the thorny devil spiked the dingo, the dingo bit the quoll who tripped on the kangaroo who squashed the crocodile who emptied the bath. Then it started raining and the waterhole filled up again and the dusty boy finally got a bath.

I think Book Café was really, really, really fun and I want to do it again another year round. I really like the book When The Waterhole Dries Up because I like kangaroos and baths! We would not have done it without Mrs Marrion, Miss Bolton and our librarian Mrs Murray!

Book Café

On Wednesday 24th August LA27 year3 had a gigantic grin spread across their face, their soul started dancing and singing the song of heavens as we were in class getting ready for Book Café. Mrs Marion told us to write a blurb for our books. While we were doing that Mrs Marion and Miss Bouten got the fruit platter, cheese, sausages and the raspberry lamington ready. My book's title was ‘The Boy And The Elephant’.

Before recess we all brought our iPads and books to the library and we put them on a desk that we got to choose. The teachers brought the food over. We were so excited for the year 1s and the year 2s to come so recess went really slow. My friends and I were eagerly waiting for recess to end.The siren rang hence we ran to the library.

After recess, the year2 class came, Mrs Marion told them about the book cafe (as they didn’t know). I had to read the blurb to the kids. Finally two kids came to read our book (even though it didn’t have any words as it was a textless book). Surprisingly, they got all the questions correct. Then they did some drawing of elephants and recorded their voice on Book Creator. While we were doing that the yummy, delicious food came. We enjoyed a fruit platter, cheese, sausages, raspberry lamington and cupcakes.

Before lunch the year 1 class came. I was less nervous because it is my second time doing it. My partner Rafael, he read the blurb to the year ones but it took him ages to get someone but eventually he got someone to come. And again surprisingly, even the year ones got all the questions correct and they did a very nice drawing as well. When the food came the year ones got over excited.

Finally when we were done, it was time for lunch but we had to pack everything away because it was like a rubbish bin. It took a while to clean it up. I secretly took a look if there was a Tom Gates book but there wasn’t. When we were walking back I found a sticker that said “Dreaming with eyes open” the topic of book week.

BOOK CAFE RECOUNT

First On Wednesday the 23rd of August myself and LA 27 year 3 decided to host a book cafe and get children to understand the message of books and enjoy them. We were joined by Mrs Marrion (our teacher) Mrs Murray (our librarian) Mrs Lane (teacher) and Ms Seeley (LA 10 Mrs Govenders relief). But not to forget all of Ms Seeley and Mrs Lanes class and we met at the library to begin celebrating book week and the Childrens Book Council Awards (CBCA). Ms Bolton chopped up some fruit we had strawberry’s cheese blocks blueberries grapes and raspberries and Mrs Murray helped Mrs Marion set up the tables and chairs.

Next we set up the area when we walked in the tables were already there so we started by putting book stands on the table and then we put our books on it after that we layed down the plates and napkins and once we did that me and Aston had to get some stools because there wasn’t enough chairs. Once we did that we were finished setting it up Mrs Marrion explained to us what we are going to do and how we will do it. “Make sure you make activities on Book Creator in the iPads for them and let them read with you” we heard Mrs Marrion say Once the people arrived we asked them which book they would like to read. Me and Aston got Mason. Our shortlisted book ‘Blue Flower’ written by Sonyett Harttnett and illustrated by Gabriel Evans.

After that we read the book to our year 1 called Mason and he read with me and Aston. Then we asked him some questions and he got them all right! He was really smart! After that we gave him some activities to do we all drew our favourite character and once we finished that we drew our favourite page. Then we did it again with another class and we offered them food and when I asked him what would he rate the book ands he said “ten out of ten”which was the top rating. Then we asked him what did the girl feel like and he answered by saying she was very sad and lonely because she couldn’t make any friends and she was scared to get something wrong. After he said he had the best time ever!

My opinion is that the book cafe was a huge success and maybe we could do it again soon because it was a very fantastic experience and made the kids want to read books everyday and enjoy books like we do. we also had a blast munching and crunching food while we read the book.

Book Week Dress-Up Parade

We will be holding our Whole School Book Week Dress-Up Parade for all students and staff from Kindy to Year 6 on FRIDAY 23rd SEPTEMBER (the last day of this term).

Students are invited to dress up as either a character from a book, as the book itself or they can wear a costume that relates to this year’s Book Week theme of “Dreaming with Eyes Open.” If possible, we ask that students bring their chosen book with them (or borrow it from the Library) to show the relationship between their costume and book. No need to make, purchase or hire expensive costumes. Just upcycle and use what you have! All students who participate in the Dress-Up Day Parade will receive a “Dreaming with Eyes Open” bookmark.

Two parades will be held on the school quadrangle outside the Undercover Area on the morning of FRIDAY 23rd SEPTEMBER for students to share their costumes and books with the whole school community:

Canteen Reminders

We’re gearing up for the end of term! These will be the last weeks for winter soups & stuffed spuds. Week 10 will have an end of term sausage sizzle watch out for the note home. If you missed the update on Fb the canteen is feeling some pressure on stock levels. If you notice your favourite is not available one day, our apologies we are doing our best to keep up but when not available will substitute first before taking from the menu.

Term 4 will be the start of the Summer Menu. Over the school holidays we will be doing a relook at the menu and prices. An advanced notice that we have been taking much of the increases in costs and will have to increase our prices next term. We are always mindful of costs and keep them as low as possible. The income from our sales only needs to sustain our own overheads and what’s required to run the canteen running successfully. Notes will come home in the first week of term 4 to update our school families. Wednesday Specials will continue in term 4 and will be are available to order via Qkr and advertised on the P&C FB page the Sunday prior.

Week 4 of term 4 is Book Week and with it the return of our Book Week Special Menu, Fairy Bread Day Special is also then in Nov and there will be heaps more! Join the P&C page on Fb to keep up to date.

Emergency lunches happen from time to time and we will never let a student go hungry. If your child comes home with a note from the canteen, the amount can be paid cash the next day or on Qkr via the accounts to pay menu.

Thanks
Sue, Nat & the canteen team.
