23 March 2023

From the Principal

Dear parents and caregivers,

We are approaching the end of term 1. There have been some wonderful opportunities this week to celebrate the diverse community that we live in and celebrate Harmony Day. Thanks to all those families who contributed special food from their homes to our FoodFest. It has been wonderful to see the support for this event post COVID. All the money raised from our orange/multicultural dress day and the FoodFest is going to the UN Earthquake Appeal for Children in Syria and Turkiye.

Swimming update

You may be aware there has been a shortage of qualified swimming teachers, this has impacted on In-term swimming having enough staff to provide a full 9-day swimming series for our year 1-4 students. Thank you for your understanding and continued patience with the changes. Swimming lessons are an important life skill for young people in Australia and I encourage you to make a commitment to either the 4-day or 5-day series our students are participating in.

NAPLAN

The year 3 and 5 students have now finished NAPLAN testing for 2023. The data will be available in second semester and is used by teachers to inform the plan, teach and assess cycle.

ANZAC assembly

On Monday 24th April the school community will be having an ANZAC assembly. The assembly will follow a slightly different format from previous years but will still contain the ANZAC message that we all value. Parents and community members are invited to join us at 1.30pm on Monday 24th April for a 1.45pm start. Students from Pre-primary through to year 6 will be attending. Further information will be in the next newsletter and on the school dojo story.

School uniforms

The parent community has raised a few issues with our current school uniform, mostly around the fabric. Tudor Uniforms have committed to work with the school to look at the issues and seek a solution. I'm setting up a small working party to work with Tudor, the school and parent community. The working party would have 3 parent members, ideally someone from early childhood, junior primary and upper primary. If you are interested in being part of the working party, please email me your expression of interest by Friday 31st March Natalie.Bracegirdle@education.wa.edu.au

Quiz Night

Don’t forget to purchase your tickets for the Quiz night on 31st March. See posters around the school for further information about the evening.

Check out the school calendar for upcoming events.

Enjoy the week.

P&C News

P&C 2023

We are so happy to announce that after our Special Meeting held on 1st March 2023 that we can introduce your 2023 Committee (the full committee will be on our Facebook page soon). Please congratulate and welcome to the team:

President: Mark Green
Vice President: Sonya March
Secretary: Kristie Fleming
Treasurer: Kellie Nanavati

The fundraising and events calendar for 2023 is up and running with many of the usual events for students all approved, keep watch of our fb page for all the updates to stay current.

One thing as president I have already learned is that there is an enormous effort (past and present) put in by everyone involved in the P&C to ensure that the P&C continues to run and provides a great community service for the children & the school.

2023 is going to be a great year and I can already see plenty of work in the background to make all the events and fundraising a success. It is great to see we already have 6 large events and workshops in the making along with continued operations of the canteen.

Quiz Night is already selling tickets so please buy a ticket and come along for a great night. Tickets are sold individually, so please purchase tickets separately and register teams and sit together on the night of the event. Tickets sold by Friday 24th March get an extra entry in the door prize draw.

Many thanks,

Mark
P&C President 2023

P&C News – Roadwise

Each term has designated year groups for parents to volunteer for a session to help Kiss N Drive in the afternoon. Parents are able to forward plan their session into the year and change as required.

Please note that the Kiss N Drive is not just the responsibility of the school, the Kiss N Drive is outside school grounds and is not the responsibility of the school to run, that's where parents and volunteers come in.

The roster updates in real time which makes changes immediately allowing the roster to look after itself.

A link to the roster is below. The Roadwise Committee will do the first week of each term as we return to school. Thursday of the first week will double as a training session for those who wish to see how easy it is before you do your own.

All parents participating that term will go into a raffle to win one of two $10 vouchers for the canteen and don’t forget you also have the use of a staff car park on the day you volunteer for Kiss N Drive. If you find it as easy as you thought it would be, roster in for a second or third session for more entries into the draw!!

This was Kiss N Drive's first major change to how it’s been run in the school’s 24 year history and has been running for a couple of years now. The committee was so excited to spread the word and see this grow year on year after much planning and to have it be so successful was an extra win.

Now it’s over to the parents of 2023 to help even ‘just once’ to make it a success.

Contact our Roadwise Coordinator for any questions on lpspandcroadwise@gmail.com

Now it’s up to all of us! Please help us to spread the word by sharing and talking to each other about the roster. Parent Link will help to remind year groups through the year to communicate this to all our families as well. Let’s get 2023 off to a great start with our year 2 & 6 parents up first for term 1.

Term 1 – Year 2 & 6
Term 2 – Year 1 & 5
Term 3 – Year All Years
Term 4 – Year 3 & 4

Note all Years’ Time slots / Schedules are available so would be great to see the schedule fill up.

Canteen Information

CANTEEN INFORMATION

Canteen Manager: Sue Uyen
Phone: 0410 894 457
Opening hours: 8:30am to 1:45pm

We are excited to be back and providing the school all the favourites again this year. The canteen reno results are amazing but we are a few things short, so are returning to the year with a lighter menu but will increase the items as we can. We unfortunately have to wait on a new piece of equipment which is the cause for the delay.

Teacher Tuesday and Student Waste Free Wednesday Specials are available to order via Qkr and advertised on the P&C FB page the Sunday prior around 10am so please watch out for these!

We have a new menu which is attached for all our families to have a copy of at home. It’s new, colourful and fresh which represents everything the Canteen Crew are.

Emergency lunches happen from time to time and we will never let a student go hungry. If your child comes home with a note from the canteen, the amount can be paid cash the next day or on Qkr via the accounts to pay menu.

Thanks
Sue, Nat & the canteen team

Welcome to Bilingual Families Perth

Bilingual Families Perth is a not-for-profit network of linguistically diverse people in Western Australia.

Our network connects over 500 families and individuals from more than 40 language backgrounds. In the past 10 years we have provided support for families who speak Afrikaans, Bengali, Bosnian, Bulgarian, Cantonese, Catalan, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Farsi, Finnish, French, German, Gujarati, Greek, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Macedonian, Malay, Malayalam, Mandarin, Mongolian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Punjabi, Russian, Samoan, Serbian, Spanish, Swahili, Swiss-German, Swedish, Tagalog, Tamil, Turkish, Vietnamese besides various dialects of the relevant languages.

Most families have pre-school or school-aged children and we are experiencing similar issues while raising our children in more than one language. We also work together with professionals who share information on bilingualism and multilingualism. We can probably put you in touch with people who speak your language.

More information about our groups

As well as running the Telethon Holiday Makers Program, we also run social groups throughout the school year. Using a  strengths-based approach , we connect autistic young people with others and provide opportunities for social interaction, engagement and fun. Designed for specific age ranges, the social groups offer a regular program of events and activities for members. We provide a place where individuals from 10 years old to adults can come to have fun, develop new friendships and develop new skills, enabling them to begin to apply social skills in a natural environment. Participants are invited to make decisions on what they would like to do throughout the term, both individually and as a group. If participants have a plan or self-managed NDIS plan, they can use their funds to access our services, but we also have a limited number of subsidised rates for those without NDIS funding.
