30 November 2017
From the Principal
Dear Parents and Families,
Please join me in congratulating one of our School Board members, Deb Yates, who has won the 2017 Beginning Teacher of the Year Award from the WA Department of Education. This is a prestigious award, which is much sought after.
Currently, teachers are completing reports, which are a culmination of what has occurred throughout semester 2. Your child achieving a ‘C’ grade means that his/her learning is on track of what can be expected. To make those judgements, we use the Department of Education’s samples of student work to judge the standard of each student.
I would like to thank the P&C for a wonderful year. They continue to help build the community that is Landsdale Primary School. They raised funds for a variety of aspects, such as the fort in our new playground, funding a Year 2 mental maths program and buying the 3-D printer.
Kind regards,
Dr Tony Beswick

Students Going On Extended Holidays
If you are going away for an extended period over the school holidays, can you please let the office know as soon as possible as we need to confirm the student’s return date back to Landsdale Primary School in 2018.
#LPS Kindness Rocks
This week Kindness Rocks have been delivered to each classroom.
A couple of mums and amazing rock artists from the community have got together to paint one rock for every child at Landsdale Primary School PP-Yr6. Some of you may have already seen them come home with your child!
We hope this rock helps spread kindness, love, hope and encouragement within the school.
Perhaps your child will want to spread more random acts of kindness by making their own rock to share with others or by doing a good deed for someone…or by some other cool creative way.
A gold letterbox will be positioned near the friendship bench at school for future rock drops although many may choose to hide them at local parks for others to find.
If you do choose to create inspirational painted rocks, here's how:
STEP #1 YOU WILL NEED SOME ROCKS!
Flat smooth rocks work best. Supplies such as Smiling Rock, Drovers and Artistic Stone have a large selection of rocks perfect for painting on.
STEP #2 PREPARE YOUR ROCKS!
Wash them in water to remove dust so your paint or marker colours really come to life.
STEP #3 USE ACRYLIC PAINT OR PERMANENT MARKERS
They work best… and are easy to work with, and last a long time. Sharpies, Posca pens and acrylic paint from Kmart are our personal favourites.
BE SURE TO ADD… #LPS Kindness Rocks to the back of each rock you drop so others can join us and share their pictures when they find one, that way you can follow the journey of your rock…
STEP #4 FINALLY PAINT A FINAL COAT OF NON-TOXIC CLEAR SEALANT
This will protect the artwork from the elements and the paint from altering the environment… spray sealer such as Squirts or brush on varnish such as JoJo Sonjas work perfect.
For more information or to post pictures of your Kindness Rock please join LPS Kindness Rocks on facebook:

This is a secure private page for only teachers, students and parents of Landsdale Primary School.
Please do not drop anything in our National Parks, Perth Zoo or Kings Park.
2018 1-1 Laptop Program
Thank you to all the parents who attended the Parent Information and discussion forum on Tuesday, it was well attended and we had really productive discussions. The parents there were really supportive of their child’s educational needs and understood the importance of learning to use technology well. We not only teach the students to use the tech for deeper learning tasks but we are ensuring they know how to use it ethically and safely. Like in all educational situations sometimes students make mistakes. Our job is to make the mistake a teaching and learning moment in which will hopefully prevent the same mistake being made later when children are more independent.
The main points that were discussed were:
- How we use the Mac books for learning tasks that promote original thinking, engagement and creativity but also reinforce mastery of skills and understanding. Instant feedback is also given to teachers and students for better progress.
- What procedures and plans are in place to teach students how to have a positive digital footprint and use technology ethically.
- While parents are able to choose an iPad for their child to join the program, the Macbook is more powerful and versatile for learning situations and connects easily to the network. The iPads are not fully supported on our network at the moment and have more technical issues to resolve. We are working on this and it will improve for iPads over time.
- Parental controls and managing devices through a mobile device manager (MDM) for a safer and more monitored environment. More information on this soon as it’s being trialled.
- Information on the vendor and specifics about the program. The Portal is now open for you to access this information and order your device. Winthrop Sales Portal
If you missed the forum and would like to find out more about any of the above points please look at the frequently asked questions section of our website or call the school.
Thanks,
Leanne White

Students Not Returning to Landsdale in 2018
Please let us know if your children currently in Kindy to Year 5 will no longer be attending Landsdale Primary School next year due to moving house or changing schools. All schools are funded according to our enrolments so it is very important that we plan on accurate student numbers. Families who know they will not be returning to Landsdale Primary School in 2018 are asked to click on the attached link or phone the school.

Interschool Handball
Congratulations to all the students that participated in the annual interschool handball competition on Friday, 17th November. All students represented Landsdale with pride (especially in their new shirts) and we achieved second place overall. This was our seventh year in the competition and one we look forward to at the end of each year.

Year 6 Transition Games & Interschool Tennis
Tomorrow, December 1 is a busy one for the Phys Ed program, with our transition games taking place at Kingsway Sporting Complex from 1pm and a selection of students representing the school at Sorrento Tennis Club for a tennis tournament there with five other schools from 4pm.
Good luck Landsdale!

LIBRARY BOOK BORROWING CLOSES THIS WEEK
This Friday 1st December is the closing date for all student and parent library loans. Please ensure that all library books are returned by this date. As you can imagine, it is a mammoth task to receive, scan, return and shelve all the resources that have been on loan to students, parents and staff throughout the year. You can assist us in this endeavour by making sure that your child’s books are returned on time. If your child has lost their library book, please let the classroom teacher or Mrs Murray know, so an invoice can be sent for the replacement cost.
There will be no holiday loans over the Christmas school holiday period. However, students can still access our digital library via the Wheelers website to continue reading eBooks and listening to audiobooks. With 24/7 access, our digital eLibrary never closes, so there’s no need to fear the dreaded “summer reading slide.”
The summer holiday break is also a great time to visit your local library.

Chaplain’s Chat
We have made it to week 8, well done everyone!!
Congratulations to our Year 6's who graduate in two weeks, here’s hoping they have a fantastic last few days in their primary years!
A follow on to my newsletter article a couple of weeks ago about the Emotional First Aid Kit. The story reminds us that we need to make sure we are doing things that help us keep emotionally healthy too. This is so important, especially at this time of the year - what can we do?
Just like there are things to keep our bodies healthy, there are things we can do to keep our mind healthy
- surround yourself with healthy friends, talk to loved ones every day, work on being happy, have hobbies that you love to do, make sure that you feel loved by your family or close friends, don’t SPEND TOO MUCH time on SCREENS, know how to control your SELF TALK to remain positive
- if you struggle to do these things, find someone to talk to who can encourage you and motivate you to focus on being emotionally healthy.
Let us find creative fun ways to help ourselves keep our bodies and minds healthy.

P&C President’s Report
I would like to say a massive thank you to all the parents who have volunteered throughout the year. This year, the P&C organised several successful fundraisers such as:
Easter Raffle
Mother’s Day Stall
Disco
Fun Run
Book Fair and;
Various sausage sizzles.
With these fundraisers, the P&C have raised in excess of $25 000 allowing us to contribute to items such as:
- 3D printer
- Maths and English resources
- Library Books including eBooks
- Puzzles and Toys
- Faction Carnival ribbons and trophies
- The Fort in the new playground
- Sporting shirts and;
- Sensory equipment for students with special needs.
Without volunteers like yourselves, the P&C would not be able to contribute to these much needed resources for the school.
Although most of our duties are finished for this year, I would like to take this opportunity to urge everyone to consider a role within the P&C next year. This can be a larger role or a smaller role depending on how much time you would like to spend helping out. The roles available are:
- President
- Vice President
- Secretary
- Treasurer
- School Banking Coordinator
- Fundraising Coordinator
- Canteen Committee
- School Board Representative.
The format for next year’s first meeting will be a General meeting followed by the Annual General Meeting where all current positions will be deemed vacant and parents may nominate for any position for the 2018 year. The first meeting will be held on Tuesday 20th February 2018.
Again, thank you for your help and I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Enjoy the holidays!

Safe Swimming Message to all our Families
As summer approaches, we want students and families to enjoy our beautiful waterways; remembering to swim between the flags when at the beach and stay safe around the water.
Royal Life Saving’s recently released National Drowning Report shows that 280 people drowned in Australian waterways in 2015-16. This is a five per cent increase from the previous year. Each drowning death is a personal story, affecting families, rescuers and communities.
The Department of Education, Royal Life Saving WA and Surf Life Saving WA wish everyone a safe and fun summer holiday.
To find out more information about how you can be safe over the Christmas break visit:

With beach weather now here, Surf Life Saving WA is asking you to help your kids find the fun Between The Flags and stay beach safe by downloading their free Safety Beach game to ensure you know all the tips for staying safe between the flags this summer!
