10 May 2018

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Families,

Welcome back to term 2.

One of the keys to the success of the school is to encourage your children to put in the maximum effort into their learning. For example, the upper primary teachers are using reciprocal reading in which they work with small groups of students on building comprehension skills. This helps with individual instruction and keeping a careful eye on how each student constructs meaning.

Thank you to the many parents/families joining the school in commemorating ANZAC day. It was a moving ceremony, which emphasised keeping our promises and showing compassion by saying ‘no’ to bullying behaviour.

Thank you also to the parents/families that have given the school their email address in our transition to emailing your child’s report to you. I understand that some families do not have an email address, so the option is open for a limited printing of reports. For this service, you will need to inform the school by 18th May, 2018.

Regards,

Dr Tony Beswick
Principal

NAPLAN Online Update

Landsdale Primary School has been an online NAPLAN trial school for the last 2 years. Each year has provided us with improved knowledge for the teachers and increased student confidence.

We successfully completed the online practice test in April, no issues with the technology occurred and the students preferred the online testing.

The transition from the current paper-based tests to computer-based assessments will commence officially this year.

At Landsdale this year, all of the Year 5 tests will be computer-based assessments online. Year 3 students will do a paper-based writing test and all other tests will be online.

We are now ready for the NAPLAN online testing period from 15th -25th May. This is a longer than normal period as it allows for all contingencies. We anticipate only needing the period between May 15th-18th, the second week is available for catch up tests should they be needed.

Our schedule is:

Tues 15th May: 9-10am Yr 3 & Yr 5 writing 11.15-12-15 Yr5 Reading
Wed 16th May: 8.45-9.45am Yr 5 Conventions 9.45-10.45am Yr3 Reading 11.15-12.15pm Yr 3 Conventions
Thursday 17th May: 9-10am Yr3 Maths 11.15-12.15am Yr5 Maths.

Teachers have been practising the types of items on the tests through the public demonstration site. To get an idea of what the tests look like, visit the public demonstration site below.

A note is attached for parents of all Year 3 & 5 students with more information.

Kindergarten Enrolments for 2019

Kindy enrolments for Landsdale residents are now open for children born 1/7/2014 to 30/6/2015. The application period closes on Friday 27th July, 2017.

Please click on the link for an application form. Alternatively, application forms are available from our website or from the front office. Please note that the child’s birth certificate, immunisation schedule and “proof of address” (eg. electricity bill, rates notice, etc.) need to be submitted at this time.

For our existing Kindy students going into Pre-primary 2019 no action needs to be taken – you will be contacted later in the year regarding a position.

If you have any questions regarding enrolment at Landsdale Primary, please contact the ladies in the front office.

ANZAC Poppies

The fantastic ceramic poppies made last term for the ANZAC installation are now for sale to the students who made them from LA28, LA29, LA30 and LA31 with all monies being raised being donated to the RSL ANZAC Appeal.

If you would like to purchase the poppy you made, please pay $5 in an envelope with your name and LA clearly written on the front to the office by the end of Week Two, Term Two.

After this date any unsold poppies will be offered to the wider school community to purchase.

Thank you,

P&C President’s News

Welcome back to Term 2!

This term we are focusing on our Mother’s Day Stall and creating 2 brand new committees!

MOTHER’S DAY

Mother’s Day stall is this week, Friday 11th May. Donations are still being received and can be right up until the day. All we ask is they are new, unused in its packaging and can be from home or purchased new. This is a wonderful experience for the kids to “go shopping on their own” to purchase a small gift for the special mum in their life. $3 is all we ask for each child to purchase a gift for mum.

For those on Kindy rotation Thursday 10th, we have organised a special Mother’s Day Stall for your child to purchase their gift on this day.

CANTEEN COMMITTEE

We require a Canteen Committee to support our 4 staff and volunteers who facilitate your schools Canteen. As a very successful canteen, of which all profits go back to the students via the wish list and resources, we have a vacancy of 3 people to join the committee. This will see you liaise between canteen staff and the P&C in helping with menu changes, term special lunches, photocopying and the occasional washing roster.

SCHOOL FETE

We are also starting the ball rolling on the bi-annual fete. Next year our amazing school turns 20! We have postponed this year’s fete to coincide with the milestone and to help co-ordinate a fantastic event with the school to celebrate.

P&C MEETING – TUES 15th MAY

If you would like to be a part of either committee and/or find out more to help be involved in any way please come to the next P&C meeting to be held in the staffroom on Tuesday 15th May at 7.30pm.

PARENT WORKSHOP

We are also holding our first Parent Workshop this term on the 16th May in the staffroom with Currambine Psychology on Mindfulness for 7-12year olds - Dealing with the stresses of being a parent & Bullying and difference. This event is free but tickets to register through Eventbrite are required to secure your seat.

WALK TO SCHOOL DAY – FRIDAY 18th MAY

What is Walk to School day? Walk to School Day is a WALK OVER MAY Heart Foundation event that encourages students to become more physically active by walking all or part of the way to school. Walking to school helps children achieve the 60 minutes of physical activity they need every day for good health as recommended by the Heart Foundation, the Australian Government and the World Health Organisation. Walking also helps reduce the number of cars on nearby roads and in school car parks making it much safer to access the school zone.

Walk to school, receive a sticker on the way in and enjoy an icy pole on us at lunch time.

Roadwise – Kiss ‘n Drive

Kiss ‘n Drive is still desperately in need of volunteers for Tuesday & Thursday afternoons. It really only takes 15-20 minutes of your afternoon plus you get the added bonus of a parking spot in the staff carpark! PLEASE if you can spare some time to help out, even if it’s only fortnightly, monthly or a once off get in touch on 0419 924 456.

Can all parents/caregivers please remind children there is to be no use of electronic devices whilst waiting to be collected from Kiss N Drive, unless they are directly communicating with their parent/person picking them up. Children need to be paying full attention waiting for their vehicle to arrive and they cannot do this with their faces in a phone/MacBook.

Also, drivers using Kiss N Drive are reminded it is unsafe to perform u-turns at the front of the school and as such we request that you do not.

Thanks,

Caitlin Sabatino
Roadwise Coordinator
