From the Principal
Dear Families
Congratulations to all the students who participated in the interschool athletics carnival last week, they represented Landsdale Primary School very well. Landsdale was second overall and very close in points to the winning school, a credit to the staff and students involved.
This term was very eventful in many ways and for each event the community support and spirit was evident. Thank you to all involved in providing support, resources and encouraging words to the staff and students involved in the Kindy fire. Thank you to the many parents who attended the school Open Night, Faction Carnival and Interschool Carnival, it is great to have such strong support.
The P&C this year have continued their amazing support for the school from organising fundraising events to the many committees supporting school programs such as Roadwise, Banking, the Canteen and the Uniform Shop. Without a strong P&C our school would struggle to provide the many extra things that make the school so effective. We would love to see more parents become a part of the P&C especially our Kindy parents as this would help to ensure we maintain a strong connection with our parents and students there.
Parents please remind your children that when they arrive at school prior to 8.30am that they are required to go straight to the Numbat Lodge Alcove. This is a school rule and is designed to ensure all students are supervised and safe when they arrive at school. Classroom teachers will be in their rooms at 8.30am.
If you bring your child to school and are waiting with them, please understand that the school has a no play, no equipment rule in place prior to 8.30am and your cooperation with this is appreciated. It has been greatly improved lately and so nice to have a calm, safe start to the day for all students and staff.
Term Four is always busy and a special one for our Year Six students. The annual final year camp for our Year Six students is in Week 2. This is always an important event for the students and provides many special memories. Our thanks go to the P&C for their continued contribution to camp this year, as in previous years. Graduation is Wednesday 16th December.
Term 4 starts for students next term on Monday 12th October as our school Development Day where students do not attend is on Friday 30th October.
I hope all of our families have a safe and happy holiday and look forward to a fantastic Term Four.
Kind regards,
Leanne White

The Wonderful World of the Web
Just like the real world, the Internet can be a wonderful place full of amazing information, people and ideas. However, just like the real world it also has it’s dangers, inappropriate people and misinformation.
In both worlds the good outweighs the bad and with care and education both can be safe to navigate.
There are some simple practical steps you can take to help limit the risks as well as clear advice you can give your child. The best way of doing this is to get involved and understand how your children use the Internet. Developing your knowledge of the technology involved and understanding how your child uses this technology to interact with others on the Internet will greatly assist you in guiding and supporting your children to ensure that they are using it in the safest possible manner.
There are no Internet Filters that will stop 100% of inappropriate material from being accessed through the Internet. The best way to keep your child from accessing this material is to set clear guidelines in relation to internet usage, when it can be used, for how long, and where they can use it (eg. In a space that you can observe them, not a bedroom where they are unobserved). Check your child’s Internet history at random times and discuss the sites they access to ensure they are appropriate sites. If the history is blank, you will need to discuss why they have deleted their history and monitor them at the time of using their machine.
Most social media sites should not be used by children under 13, however if it is being used, discuss what kind of information that they should be giving out, and that the person they think they are interacting with may be hiding their identity. Encourage them to treat other users with the same level of respect that they want people to show them. If they are uncomfortable with any of the communication they are experiencing ensure they know how to block the user and stress that they need to talk to you or their teacher to get assistance. They need to understand that putting images of their friends without their parents knowledge is not appropriate and can be distressing or have legal ramifications.
There are many sites that offer advice and help to parents and children and our website has links to these as well. At school students are not permitted to use their social media accounts. The school social media accounts are for educational purposes, these are monitored by staff to ensure only appropriate material is uploaded and no unauthorised images are used.
Teachers are continually teaching students sound educational and safe practices on the Internet and monitoring student laptops often. We do have the ability to remotely monitor the student machines. It does work best when the machines are upgraded to the latest operating system, so please download the free upgrade and install it at home if needed.
Apart from the significant educational advantage the students gain from having their own laptop, the education they receive around the ethical and safe use of technology while at this age will stand them in good stead for the more risk taking years as teenagers. The knowledge they have will enable them to make informed decisions, and hopefully enable them to make the right ones for a positive digital footprint.

We are doing our best to get well organised for a smooth start to 2016 but we rely on your help in this important area. All schools are funded according to our enrolments so it is very important that we plan on accurate enrolment numbers. P&C President’s Update
As we near the end of Term 3, we at the P&C, just wanted to take a moment to say Thank You to all the hardworking volunteers that provide us with their expertise, and give up their time, to help us with our efforts around Landsdale Primary.
Whether it’s helping out at Kiss and Drive or the uniform shop, assisting in the Canteen or School Banking, being a Safety House in our neighbourhood or assisting with our fundraising initiatives, your help has made a real difference, put simply … we couldn’t do it without you!
DeAnn Hollis wrote, “The heart of a volunteer is not measured in size, but by the depth of the commitment to make a difference in the lives of others.”
Our volunteers have helped us to make a difference in the lives of our kids at Landsdale Primary School, so a BIG thanks from us to you!
On another note, we’d like to get your opinion!
As I’m sure you’ll remember, funds raised by the fete last year have been set aside for some bench seating to be built around the trees near the canteen.
Landsdale Primary must purchase items from companies under a Common Use Agreement, which is simply an arrangement for all government bodies that enables the purchase of specific goods and services.
Landsdale Primary obtained a quote for the installation of the bench seats around the trees, which meant only one seat would have been able to be purchased.
In the interim the school has purchased moveable seating which you may have seen around the school. There are 4 bench seats which are placed around the school during the day and moved under cover at night. The flat bench was purchased so that students could do written work at the benches as well. They are sold as outdoor equipment, so should withstand the environment for some time.
The 4 bench seats cost a total of approximately $7,200 (approx. $1,800 each) and provide the school with much greater flexibility. The school will continue to look at options regarding the tree seating, however they have asked if a portion of the fete funds can go towards the purchase of these bench seats. The P&C will discuss and vote on this at the next P&C meeting which is due to be held in Week 3 of Term 4. However before we do so, we’d love to receive any feedback you may have regarding this matter.
Please email landsdaleprimarypandc@yahoo.com.au with your thoughts.
Thanks
Kendra McDonald

Host Families Needed in January 2016
OPPORTUNITY FOR STUDENTS TO EXPERIENCE ANOTHER CULTURE, MAKE NEW FRIENDS
AND IMPROVE THEIR LANGUAGE STUDIES AT HOME
In January 2016 we will be receiving exchange students from Argentina, Bolivia, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland, Sweden and the USA. Our new arrivals will live with a host family and attend a local school for 3, 5 or 10 months. As we plan for their arrival, we are keen to hear from suitable families who might be interested to host a student.
Host families come in all shapes and sizes, backgrounds and ages. Hosting an exchange student can be a truly rewarding experience. It allows a family to experience a foreign culture first hand, be exposed to a new language and pass on a bit of our own culture. They might even make a friend for life!
All students have at least basic levels of English, would attend a school in your local area and live the life of a local. Below is a sample of students who will be arriving.
For 15 year old Canadian Meghan, coming to Australia and broadening her horizons is an exciting prospect. Whilst here, Meghan is hoping to continue her love of sports and being active and would be more than happy to participate in community sports. Describing herself as wanting to work in the field of Science one day, Meghan's also enjoys reading and is happy to contribute to the household chores.
Rosalyn is a 14 year old student from Denmark who likes to play the guitar and sing, in fact she says that her host family will hear her singing a lot. By coming to Australia, she hopes to improve her English and become more independent. Rosalyn enjoys kickboxing and would like to continue this whilst in Australia. Describing herself as a people person, her family say that Rosalyn will make you laugh.
Fifteen year old French student Ploum, playing piano, listening to music, doing theatre, photography and spending time with her family and friends is what occupies most of her time. Ploum is looking forward to discovering the Australian way of life and developing her English language skills.
Alice is a 16 year old Italian student who enjoys studying, going to the gym and spending time with her family and friends. Alice has already spent time abroad in Ireland and England and loves to travel. She is looking forward to coming to Australia to integrate with locals and learn about the culture. Whilst here, she would like to play sport, go to the beach and see a few different Australian cities.
Savannah or Savy to her friends is a 16 year old student from the USA who is looking forward to challenging herself by moving to Australia and embracing the culture. Savannah says that she is adventurous but cautious and values honesty, respect and kindness. Her parents describe her as responsible, positive and mature. Savannah is looking forward to making new friends and hopes to snorkel, go to the zoo and see museums whilst here.
You can view more profiles of students arriving soon from our website. Please note that this is just a handful of the students who will be arriving.
The Stuart family were thrilled to have Danish student Simon stay with them for 8 months. As commented by host mum Victoria, "it has been a fantastic experience. Simon has been an awesome role model to our two young children, he has been like an older brother to them." Victoria continues, "the experience has benefited us too, as it has allowed us to have greater free time and flexibility as a family. I was very impressed with Simon, as within the first couple of days he was here, he asked what should his chores be?"
"Just give it a go, the benefits will surprise you. I highly recommend it", mentions Australian Host Dad Andrew, from the Stuart family. "Not only do your children benefit, but the benefits exist for the parents too." Host Dad, Andrew continues, "We are so lucky to have Simon come stay with us. He is a fantastic student, easy going and not very demanding. He has fitted into the Australian way of life so easy. He even obtained his Bronze Medallion. We are so proud of Simon."
The Stuart family talk about their hosting experience further and discuss the ups and downs of hosting, why they hosted and the benefits of being a volunteer host parent. Please check out their video here . You can also watch a selection of videos of the Cain family from our host family testimonials page on our website.
