From the Principal
Dear Parents and Families,
Landsdale Primary School has used positive psychology based on Martin Seligman’s work for many years. We focus on the strengths of each child and to support the change of unexpected behaviours. Teachers have continued their work on firm, but fair consistency of our three rules. Furthermore, we have provided some individual interventions that have led to a significant decrease in the number of lunchtime and recess detentions given to students.
Recently, Year 5 students were given a survey of their wellbeing using a South Australian Department of Education tool. Next term, we will be comparing our results with the Cluster Schools to see what worked and what we need to work on.
We have also been working on having a ‘no hands up, unless asking a question’ tactic in all classrooms. This is where the teacher asks a question then nominates a student to give a response. This means that all students expect to think and not rely on those who are quicker at answering questions.
Regards,
Dr Tony Beswick

Visual Art News
We would like to give you an update about LA18's joint classroom and visual art sustainability project this semester. Students have completed their turtle sculptures made from recycled materials, if you didn't catch a glimpse during the recent learning journeys evening, here are a couple of photos of their amazing creations. The sculptures have been entered into the Rethink Waste Recycled Art competition so best of luck LA18, we hope to hear some good news soon. In the mean time they have been enthusiastically selling the 3 R's message: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!

LA 27 Book Cafe
Book Café Review by Aleksija, Year 4 LA27
LA27 had a Book Cafe with the year 1’s but before LA27 did do that we had to make food like donuts and pizza and it tasted really good. LA9 were the first class to come so we had to set up really fast and get the food ready. After that we had LA8 they had an awesome time and both classes were having fun.
After we had the book cafe, we had to clean up and it was really dirty and kind of fun to me but a big mess was everywhere that’s why we had to clean up. With the year 1’s we also did Google Auto drawing on Book Creator. They eventually got used to it. Book creator was the best thing that I liked out of all because you get to share the books you make with them. That was probably the best day of school I have ever had, but it was a bit boring.
When the next class had to come in I was sad because I wanted the other class to stay but we needed to have both classes have a turn so I said goodbye, And the other class came I had to help them get to the right table because they didn’t know where to go. Before when I was talking about the cleaning while we were cleaning we also had to do book change that was really fun. I was amazed with LA9 and LA8’s reading it was fabulous for their age. Did I mention that we did some cooking together that was the best part of the day, that's why I’m mainly talking too much about it.
In conclusion what I liked about the classes coming was they had to draw and write about their favourite page that had animals on it. I think that the picture was cute because their drawing was a little funny. It’s at the bottom of this paragraph so if you want to see it scroll down. The thing that I hated that so many people were stealing food from our table.
* LA 27’s Book Café is where our students share books and activities from the shortlisted and notable Children’s Book Council Award (CBCA) texts with other students (Year 1s in 2019), while enjoying tasty treats in the library during Book Week. LA 27 students created activities related to reading strategies in an app/program called Book Creator, and taught the younger students how to use this app.
Book Cafe Review by Almyn, Year 4 LA 27
LA9 and us learnt about how people actually do fractions in real life then we started to cook. We made pizza and made donuts with the LA 9 students, but some people didn't get to make anything. Cody and I and my buddy called Gabriel made pizza then we showed him Book Creator, and we showed him how to use Auto draw. Then LA 9 left to get ready for their assembly. Then we cleaned up and we made a little bit more of the donuts.
On Thursday 22 August, we are doing a Book Cafe and we have two classes coming in it is LA9 and 8. The first class that we had was LA9 a lot of people came to our book (Dingo) even Gabriel. Cody and I were reading the book then we got buddies and we did stuff on book creator. Gabriel and I made such a good dingo, but then they had to leave. After that, LA 8 came in and lots of people chose Dingo again me and my partner finished our book creator and she told me she liked the book. After they left we had to pack up, there was lots of crumbs on the floor. I enjoyed the book cafe because it was fun and it had loved it.
Today I was so happy that I did the book cafe and I loved it. I will love to do it again. So today and yesterday I was really happy because we got to cook pizza and donuts. LA27 loved teaching LA9. In the end I loved working with Gabriel because he worked hard and he loved it. But I also liked working with the girl that I taught she did really hard and never said I can't do it.

IT’S NO SECRET! BOOK WEEK WAS BRILLIANT!
We would like to extend a huge THANK YOU to our entire school community for their enthusiastic participation in Children’s Book Week. It was a delight to see our students, parents and teachers gathered together to celebrate the power of reading. Parents, thank you for the effort you put into dressing up your children in fun, colourful costumes and for your attendance at the parade. Students, thank you for embracing Book Week and sharing the fun with your friends. Staff, thank you for providing your students with engaging literacy activities during Book Week and encouraging them to make reading their secret power. We would also like to thank Mrs Margaret Quirk for, once again, supporting our school by attending the parade and donating two lovely books to our Library.

Faction Athletics Carnival
Faction Carnival Update
Due to the forecast of poor weather approaching this afternoon, we have re-adjusted the faction carnival program. The major difference is the division 1 races will be held first up in the morning, following the kindy and pre-primary races. All rotations should conclude by 12.45pm with presentations after lunch at approximately 1.30pm in the undercover area, if need be.
Attached is the program for this year’s faction athletics carnival on Thursday. The carnival will follow pretty much the same format as in previous years, although the track will run west to east this time.
Progressive points from the cross country, jumps, throws and distance events are;
Banksia |
94 |
Cassia |
85.5 |
Grevlliea |
88 |
Hovea |
92.5 |
To assist in the carnival running smoothly, the guidelines below are asked to be followed.
- When students are involved in their rotational team game events, spectators are encouraged to follow their children around the stations, however, please don’t get too close so as to interfere with the event.
- When running races are on, spectators are asked to view them from the community centre side of the running track. Please keep away from the finish line to enable officials to do their jobs without interference.
- Your child is to remain under the supervision of teachers. If you wish to take your child early please sign them out as per the normal process. Children are able to eat with their parents during the lunchtime break.
- Parents are asked not visit children when they are in their faction bays as this impedes teacher’s efforts in preparing children for upcoming events.
- Your child should wear their faction shirt and hat and take a water bottle with their name on it.
A wrap of all thing’s faction carnival will be published in the next newsletter.
Cricket Clinics

Special Pre-Primary tennis racquet giveaway
Seven-time Grand Slam Doubles champion, former doubles world number 1 and Davis Cup Championship player and captain John ‘Fitzy’ Fitzgerald, will join us for a special assembly on Thursday September 5 at 2pm to give away free tennis racquets to our pre-primary students. The giveaway forms part of the Tennis Australia and ANZ’s Racquet Roadshow which will visit up to 500 schools across Australia and giveaway more than 30,000 racquets.
The presentation of racquets will include a short video, Q&A time and photo opportunities with the Aussie Tennis legend. Parents are invited to attend.
Water Corporation – Competition “Kep the Water Detecting Dog”
The Year Two students had an incursion for the Water Corporation in term 2 and after the visit students and parents continued their learning through a "Water Wise" investigation at home to be aware of water leaks. Students then returned their competition sheets to enter in the "Win a visit from Kep the water detecting dog".
I am thrilled to announce that we won the competition. The water corporation with Kep and her handlers will attend the school for a special Junior Assembly for Kindy, Pre Primary, Year 1, Year 2 on Thursday the 12th September at 9.15am.
After the school assembly the year two students will observe Kep at work. As a condition of winning this prize, our school is requested to participate in publicity, including a photo for a media release; social media and Water Corporation’s website. Some photographs to be taken on the day of the visit.
