22 October 2020

From the Principal

Dear Parents and Families,

Welcome back to Term 4

Welcome back to Term 4. This term is traditionally a very busy term not only for our students but also for our staff. I am sure most of you will be very happy to eventually put 2020 behind us as a very unusual and difficult year. This term the staff will be planning for 2021 which will involve projecting enrolment numbers, class structure and curriculum reviews. They will also be planning for the up-coming whole school review (which will be conducted during term 1 next year) and writing our final students end of year reports. Our students will look forward to a number of wonderful excursions/incursions such as the Massed Choir event, Artist in Residence Program, Special Sports Events, Character Dress Up Day and Graduation to name a few. The P&C will also be organising the Coloured Fun Run, School Disco (TBC) and P&C Quiz Night. `

Artist in Residence

This is currently being undertaken with all classes participating from years 1-6. Our Artist in Residence Jodie Davidson has been working with the classes to construct a large-scale sculpture of a leafy sea dragon. I have visited some of the classes and observed the enthusiasm that is displayed by the students. Our senior students have been totally engaged and we all look forward to seeing the final product. Thank you again to the P&C for their contribution which has supported this project.

School Development Day

Our final School Development Day will be held this Friday. This is a pupil free day. The main focus of this will be preparing for the Whole School Review which will occur during Term 1 2021.

The School Review is part of the Independent Public School accountability process and is done in every school on a one, three or five-year cycle. Two external reviewers from the Department will visit the school and assess the evidence provided by the school against a number of key domains. These domains include:

  • Relationships and Partnerships
  • Learning Environment
  • Leadership
  • Use of Resources
  • Teaching Quality
  • Student Achievement and Progress

This will also mean that some parents, members of the P&C and School Board may meet with the reviewers and give feedback to them about the school. The Review Team will also be meeting with some staff and groups of students.

NAPLAN 2021 Update

It is expected the NAPLAN 2021 assessments will go ahead as scheduled as per normal. In the event of unforeseen and unpredictable circumstances arising from national or state COVID-19 outbreaks schools will be given directions by the relevant authorities to determine the need for any alternative arrangements. The testing is scheduled to commence on Tuesday 11th May 2021. Please refer to the ACARA website for further information.

Kind Regards,

Mr Josh Jashari
Principal

1-1 Laptop Program for 2021

Is your child entering Year 4 in 2021 or are you considering joining your year 5 or 6 child into the 1-1 program? Read on!

Our parent funded 1-1 Laptop program ensures our students have the best opportunities to acquire essential skills in digital technologies and STEM for their future. We recognise and value the parents of our senior students’ commitment to their children’s education.

Parents have the option of choosing the MacBook Air 13” or the latest iPad for the program. Teachers, students and our parent representatives all strongly recommended the MacBook as the school’s preferred device.

The response from parents this year has been overwhelmingly positive, with 83% of students having their own device, and of those, all were MacBooks.

For 2020 we continue to recommend the MacBook Air 13” as the preferred device, while including the option of the iPad; there is also a leasing option for both devices.

We recommend the MacBook Air 13” over the iPad for the following reasons, the MacBook:

  • is sturdier and has greater longevity, students often using their laptops through to secondary schooling.
  • has stronger parental controls and Remote desktop for teacher supervision of student use.
  • is more powerful and has more features within applications common to both Mac and iPad eg. Pages, Garageband, iMovie, google suite and Microsoft office 365.
  • is easier to use for staff and students when accessing tools for learning like the internet, google suite and network resources.
  • has a larger screen and keyboard.
  • has better tools for applications, student monitoring and network resources, eg. being able to have the school image, teachers being able to monitor student usage in real time.

We partner with Winthrop Australia to obtain the best educational prices and onsite technical support. They provide a convenient and easy online portal for you to order a device for your child. If you source a device elsewhere consider the portal information to compare accurately. Visit the Winthrop Portal for more information.

Prior to purchasing a device, please attend one of our parent information sessions for more information and discussion with our 1-1 leadership team:

Please click the link to choose all the dates and times you can attend the Information Forums for the 1-1 Program: Forum Dates and Times

Waste-Free Wednesdays

Did you know?

The average student’s lunch generates a total of 3kg of waste per school year. At Landsdale Primary School, that equates to 2,298 kg of waste per year… just from lunches!

Each Wednesday, we are encouraging families to ditch the single-use waste to help us minimise the amount of rubbish being brought to school, that will ultimately end up in landfill.

Some tips for packing a waste-free lunch:

  • Use a reusable lunch bag or box for carrying lunch.
  • Put food in labelled reusable containers instead of wrapping in plastic wrap.
  • Put drinks in labelled refillable containers.
  • Let children make their own lunch and help them to make it nutritious and waste-free.
  • Only pack as much food as your child will eat.
  • Buy in bulk – food such as crackers, chips, biscuits, yoghurt, cheese or other small packaged food is much cheaper bought in bulk and put into reusable containers (and creates a lot less waste).
  • Stock up on easy-to-pack, healthy foods, such as fresh fruits, vegetables and wholegrains.
  • Cut up fruit and vegetables and pack them in reusable containers so that any uneaten can be saved for later.
  • Put leftovers from dinner directly into a lunch container.
  • Minimise the morning rush by packing lunches the night before and leave in the fridge overnight. Cut up a few extra vegetables whilst preparing dinner and part of the job is done.

We thank you for your continued support.

Week 4 is Children’s Book Week!

BOOK WEEK WHOLE SCHOOL DRESS-UP DAY
Friday 6th November (Week 4)

“Curious Creatures. Wild Minds” (Theme)

To celebrate Children’s Book Week and our P&C Book Fair, we will be holding our Whole School Dress-Up Day & Parade on FRIDAY 6th NOVEMBER 2020 (Week 4) for all students and staff from Kindy to Year 6.

Children are invited to dress up as either a character from a book, as the book itself or they can wear a costume that relates to this year’s Book Week theme of “Curious Creatures. Wild Minds.” Don’t forget, any book that creates a sense of curiosity and stimulates the mind, fits with this theme. We ask that students bring their chosen book with them (or borrow it from the Library) to show the relationship between their costume and their book. We encourage creativity and originality. Home-made costumes are perfect, as the fun is in the process of creating, rather than the end product. (No need to make, purchase or hire expensive costumes). All students who participate in the Dress-Up Day Parade will receive a “Curious Creatures. Wild Minds” bookmark.

Two parades will be held on the school oval on the morning of FRIDAY 6th NOVEMBER for students to share their costumes and books with the whole school community:

  • Junior Parade

Kindy/Pre Primary/Yr 1/Yr 2

@ 9.00am 9.45am

  • Senior Parade

Yr 3/Yr 4/Yr 5/Yr 6

@ 10.00am-10.45am

Parents are WELCOME to attend this special event. This year, we have had limited opportunities to come together as a school community, so we hope you will enjoy this fun morning with us, bearing in mind social distancing.

Our annual P&C BOOK FAIR is also open all week from MONDAY 2nd to FRIDAY 6th November. Please join us in the Library after the parades to check out the Book Fair. There will be extended shopping hours for parents on the Friday (8.15-12.30am and 2.00-3pm).

Please contact Mrs Murray in the Library on 9302 4100 if you have any questions about the Book Week Dress-Up Day Parade or the P&C Book Fair. Thank you for your participation. We look forward to seeing everyone dressed up on FRIDAY 6th NOVEMBER.

Please note:

A Group Kindy students (Joey A, Bilby A and Possum) will hold their parade on THURSDAY 5th NOVEMBER.

B Group Kindy students (Joey B and Bilby B) will join in with the whole school parade on FRIDAY 6th NOVEMBER.

Please check with your child’s Kindy teacher for clarification.

Better Health Program Continues Online in Term 4

Due to the ongoing Covid-19 situation face-to-face programs continue to be cancelled until further notice. Ultimately, programs will not run in the community until WA enters stage 5 of the Covid-19 roadmap, which will allow sufficient participants to attend the program.

However, the online version of the program (formally named TEAM Kids Online) featuring weekly phone call support will continue uninterrupted.

Please note that Term 4 2020 places on the online version of the program are limited, with places being offered to families completely free of charge on a first come first served basis.
